under God bright welcome everyone for joining us we have nothing to report from closed session  and  the cast for adoption of second thank you stand-up does anyone have anything that they'd like to pull as Mendes smooth II ouren  okay all in favor thank you okay wards patience and presentations  hello board president Robbins and members of the board cabinet we are so stated to dr. Lisa Cooper from principal of Culver City High School will give a brief explanation about our graduation requirement a change that happened to the board policy last year so at this time Culver City High School would like to recognize students who took a few extra months complete the formats in this first year change in policy dr. Cooper does it have a graduate I was planning to be here tonight but unfortunately is not here but I would like to fart play Matlock. We did have a change in our graduation requirements to to me to participate in the graduation ceremony than the last year and part of that committed next to making sure that students and families all students and families can enjoy the graduation ceremony we were commit to having an additional simponi which was supposed to be night but I graduate that had RSVP if not here but I would love to show you the pictures and introduce you let you see the name do we have Ashley Butler go Eduardo Garcia Torres Kelly Lorraine Cyrus keys the wheel Pauline Lee Peterson and your fat belt can still so if that was supposed to join us tonight with his fam they're not here by 4 but I still want to acknowledge cuz I still am very proud of their commitment dedication to Finn graduation requirements to receive their diploma they make the comment yes you may if you're in touch with the graduates I'd appreciate if you could Castle on my comment that I any think everybody here recognize that it takes an extra level of determination to get this done when you have just a little bit to do and you not with all your other classmates and it's not the usual routine so I just want to congratulate them and let them know that we recognize that they showed extra effort to make this happen good night for them for their families and for the mentally but I understand they have other plants and things going on but absolutely we're proud of their commitment as well I would like to say a few words to them just in case they have the opportunity to watch the video later congratulations turns on this accomplishment and I hope that you only look back in order to recognize the hard work that you're capable of doing and fur messed up this point look forward right now you are in so much better of a position than you were for before you did this now when you go to apply for a job you can check that box that says you graduated from high school and the number of opportunities available to you now are so much greater than the ones that were available to you before you finish your work your high school work and I like to also ask you to consider that now you've proven that you can apply self work hard and something so please take your education farther you know you can now so congratulations and best luck to you  thank you thank you very much  okay so we have super types report thank you so much for president Robins esteemed members of the board cabinet and Community I just wanted to haven't had a chance to update everybody sin we had our state of the district our last boarding was the day before the state of the strict and so that seems like a long time ago but I really thought it was a fantastic event and I really play entire Community being out there with 200 parents and community members Partners staff on representative from every single one of our can school sites just be a part of our communication and sharing of a district-wide vision of excellence in what we call the for a that kidemics Athletics the listen activities I'm all kind of wrapped around the notion of health and safety for all students all of the time and I really appreciated up in the conversations that were clean before during and after the event who's got a lot of feedback as we sent about the PowerPoint or the presentation slide deck I'm available for off families because it's not stop a superintendence vision or just solely a boards and it's really a community's vision at all of us in order to get to where we want to go and continued I'm for students in creating the opportunities and self makerspaces were kind of you know one of the one of the most buzz-worthy things that we're going to be doing in the fall so we'll be at rating to makerspaces Fallen rk5 schools and three more the year after that but I think everything overall was really really exciting did the idea of one on one device access for all of our students of the proliferation of by literacy about the district I'm in our ongoing commitment to academic excellence speaking of which I'm one of the things that Culver City Schools is bring this year on that's new in terms of honing in on our academic achievement mid-year this really good full force with what we call it Aramis Aspen so that's part of the state's assessment module on is completely optional on its play valuable the were in the midst of it right now every single student in grades three through eight at 11 including actually been in town or taking a version of either an interim Aspen block or knit from comprehensive assessment this meant not just for them to take an assessment before the assess is given but to give teachers Val people sets of data they can understand and predict student achievement mid-year just want to bring up that the former testing model was such that only way that you got it was in the football of the Copart of students who taught the year before fundamentally meaning date was a paper pencil system and that's how it worked the new current Assessments in California are digital teachers are getting their back and I want you to hear this 20 hours after they give the Testament it's accurate and also you'll be seeing students coming home with daily reports on the actual what's meant that they will take later on in the spring when I say that it's not the same question but it's the same skills because we're now moving to a skill base system that date set allow teachers to create a common lesson plans and pooping exercises for them to beat them to be able to go out and recalibrate student learning so that they understand kind of where students are at in January and March and April etcetera so we can prepare them for not just the assessment cuz that's the Fargo the teach to the test but really prepare them for the next year's level of course is so whether that's from 3rd to 4th or from 9th to Tampa from 7th to 8th and so on and so that's happening and that's a big deal it'll happen kind of silently cuz it's that exciting to talk about they were giving three hours at the Sussman so over do anything in the next month or so but what is side against everything that the teachers are doing with it and how were and fusing that into their PLC time to really talk about the science of teaching by teaching is both an art and a socket I'm in the science really dipped matter so using that day that goes along wet so sorry for the final report by think they're really exciting things going on in Culver City schools and free time has a lot to do with academics cuz it kind of focus in on student Culver City Unified School District drum roll please don't think we have a 24 winners across the district from our five elementary schools along with her middle school who will be an eighth  one on mano a mano kind of a competition as we go through simple elimination up until those last few words and every year it proves to be a full of drama kind of an evening lots of fun it starts at 7 we'll have a celebrity speller their very own for Komatsu who placed in the National Spelling Bee so we're really excited about that's your spelling babe so that's next Monday hope you make it up then moving to another Topic near and dear to my heart English language arts we are looking at textbook listen I just need to update the board with our meeting tomorrow at mentary teachers are looking at have completed their review of the second textbook and will be meeting tomorrow to reflect on its strengths and weaknesses and then go through a little bit of a side-by-side comparison with the textbooks step on that they will come up with the recommendation one more final meeting and then I'll be prepared to present an informational at them to the Ford be moving toward a recommendation sometime in March and then finally I'm sure you all know if it's cancer Garden Summit season with kindergarten information nights happening last week we had three already at Farragut lipao and love Iona wonderfully attended at all of those this week be sure we've got to to make them Rincon on Thursday evening and so excited about that next week or find a one at El Marino language School lots of parents in attendance at all of the all the kindergarten evenings lot of an interest in our schools so I'm excited too not a big Liam roulement process which will happen next month thank you  good start date pretty soon few minutes also a shout how to ATP a jazz combo and the Jazz Ensemble I was there at the concert on Saturday I was a prominent member and a proud mama they are so independent and self-motivated and such talented musicians that was very enjoyable as a side of Gershwin and Duke Ellington one of the cutest things I've seen as that they had a jazz Workshop earlier that day so they had four students from El Rincon and Cooper Middle School that worked with the older students they actually perform the silent they learned that day and not only did they form that song that they were able to kind of do their own little interpretation so I was I was very press I was happy for them way to have the students kind of feed in from elementary middle school we're already Jazz sappy and finally before you go to the spelling bee on Monday don't forget to grab a piece of pizza and go away in at the commit2bfit big Fair that's going to be on January 5th we already have 100 people who have pre-registered last year 40 people who registered in 100 showed up so I have no idea how many are going to show up on Monday we have part of the farewell that some of the vendors there will be signing you up for the fastest at they're going to offer as I mentioned before we have exercise options every day for 8 weeks solid cannot go we have a closed Facebook group as well so that you can have all of our Publix challenges which would be fun to see on Facebook and congratulations to El Marino and the district office Culver City Middle School for having the most participants signed up purse for the district office yay  thank you the rental  tonight we have the presentation of the ankle audit for last year I think you'll be pleased with the results tomorrow evening at the budget advisory committee meeting and want to thank the staff and can remembers who volunteer their time to Peyton at  very important committee who does really good work and Ashley survive the reins thanks all over the place I think we might have had a few sent bags place this year but other than the student parking lot at the high school I think we should we did pretty thank you Miss Shannon good evening salad this thing I have to report on is give back January and I talked about this last week but it's going really great weird thing a ramen noodle Drive which one noodle equals one tick so she didn't have a chance to pay their admin in the face but it's were really excited about or also doing puppies for patients again my fourth-period class who raised the most money wins the special special treat and this Friday were doing pasta for patients with bleed from 5 to 7 at what does this catering are pasta so $5 a bowl of pasta and $2 a slice of pizza and we'll also having Bingo so I hope to see you all there did wok and roll and green 5 this week so green fight was today at lunch so ASP student stood in front of trash cans if in rewarded kids for sorting their trash correctly back to school is this Thursday the 26th but we finally decided on a date time and seeing for the formal it would be March 11th from 5:30 to 8:30 25 bars to get in at theme is old Hollywood and gold black red sort of thing they have a professional DJ catering and is going to be fun Center  thank you thank you good evening this is still very busy during second semester we have our second semester Club fair this Thursday which will also be accompanied by a pep rally to keep a cough the winter sports season and Fred games that one of our students is heading to fundraise for the LLS fundation and so we're going to be happening play the games that are like directed towards that Foundation spirit week next week leading up to our lights out dance which is going to be next Saturday and upcoming events are the talent show which is going to be April 28th the leadership conference which is March 8th the scheduling Fair which is the 10th of February and timer playing a multicultural Fair instead of an assembly because the Robert Frost is going under construction so that's going to be with the cool and then we are also doing pennies patients thank you and I have an audience member card if the first is as a representative of the Culver City Council PTA to thank you all for your participation in the fashion show on Sunday which was it a cult city council PTA 100 Years of fashion and we also made it a fundraiser for the backpack program and thanks to all of your contributions of experiences we raised over $3,000 with backpack program just because of your elected so thank you for doing that and stepping out of your comfort since some of you some of you are very comfortable there is my second half as I'm here to represent the front and center theater collaborative on behalf of Heather Heather mote the suit could not be here today but I am working with her and we wanted to let you all know about upcoming February 10th Theater Arts Extravaganza which if they celebration of theatre arts and Culver City Unified School District and I won let you know about some stats what you may or may not know about first of all the Culver City Unified has the largest concentration of theatre arts programming for any public school district in Los Angeles region our partnership with a six art Partners is a unique operation some between partner partner said have similar missions but the work together to provide programming to the school district 4500 who's from T K through 12 are we sleeping access to Theater Arts programming their school day as well as after school that equates to 475 hours of struction every year this year at Glenda school year 30 + assemblies and field trips and it's over $200,000 worth of services at their provide at a fraction of the cost and this is supported by the foundation by the district by the city and by the funding Partners Sony find Schreiber and so on February 10th we are trying to get hundred people to come to vets complex and experience and celebrate the theater arts program we are also going to have planned a rainbow art installation part of what you see up up this screen right now we are going around District asking people to fill out ribbons that answer the question what is your vision for Arts education and Culver City Unified School District it will be on display is a backdrop for this event there will be interactive activities from 6 to 7 and then 7 to 8:30 they will be performances by all of the all theater companies coming in there will also be a special performance that is going to be a surprise but Culver City Unified students of Ollie yes and let me see what else do I have to type it's there's also food tracks from 5 to 6 it's free it's free so it is open to anybody just Culver City we as many families as many people that we want to tell the story of front-and-center and educate people about the incredible programming that goes off on because we don't think tell no nap about it and my final thing is Sammy can I get your help cuz I need a student  we also have some other surprises with time going to reveal class sleep can you come help me introducing a new hashtag Culver create very nice the police help turn up that one is many family service possible more time February 10th at 6 Friday 5 to 6 there will be food truck spoken by food next to 7 or interactive activities are going to be all over the complex doing various things through our partners and then 7 to 8:30 other performances thank you fall free okay Doctor even if you like to go first just taking a note of paper about February 10th that's all they got to say so say the district was great I'm looking forward to the spelling the Canaanites and CCMS improv don't forget coming up the weekend District concert I think is still a couple weeks away but it's before our next meeting most likely have been one with whether we reschedule it that it's cuz it's middle I get that one in between  I think the district answered is the 16 and that's the night we're talking about rescheduling a board meeting to and if we do it before being will be just barely before the district concert let's not waste time I'll just move on thank you yes also attended the First first day of the district event and it was a packed house which was great and then room only I got a lot of great responses from parents that it was about you pick up information and I felt that was really informative and they felt really up Jazz I what they heard did the Hundred Years of fashion show of Sunday by the council PTA and we got to wear some great costumes if you missed it there were pictures as evidence and they will be posted somewhere I'm sure and so when we have exceeded our expectations as raising thousand if you don't know each back takes about 10 is about $10 to fill and we do 150 packs a week to give the idea of what Fable the defrost and it's fully funded by donation only and not to drink or other funds I believe you aboard Workshop next Tuesday so looking forward to that spelling bee also I know that the crippled and 5K is coming up in February and asked to talk about that as well I know there are some team forming at schools and they hope more join us teams and there will be prizes or in frive categories for the taking most best dropped it is Oscar Sunday as well they'll be some best dressed categories prizes for that you can dress in a gallon if you like I suppose I have not trained at all for this so I guess I'll be joining the commit to be fit initiative as well  maybe I'll opt out of the way pin part  hi so the Friday after our last board meeting we had days on the council board liaison committee meeting which was also had a lot of good conversation about Washington Boulevard Street safety for Brianna because it's really the one like house tucked in kind of a neighborhood Reno's and tucked in a neighborhood certainly Farragut is an El Rincon has some pretty good sets of Siri stop signs that at least people down really make them aware that there's a school right there but people just whizzed by love Iona and unfortunately there an accident there a week ago or red before they'll is on committing any which sort of really brought home the conversation about the topic so the city's hopefully going to do something big in a couple of years and is going to implement something and rum so that there is more assertive signage and awareness and so on and so forth around that particular set of intersections and so forth and then we also spoke at something about the pool that we are hoping to collaborate with with the city with the bond they have lifeguards which is sort of the very short way of saying you know if they provide past the space in the space is ours we can build it and and they can maintain it and etcetera so we're hoping that really be couples a good Win Win 4 all of our students in in Oliver residence as well so that was that enough think the board worked up was really understand that this woman unqualified thank now that her hearing aid has been delayed not once but not twice that the pressure from everyone teachers unions across the country teachers across the country parents just people who understand care on their respective Congress members in the Senate is making a difference in that Wheatley we cannot give up cannot be distracted by tweets and random things we must continue to put pressure on to continue to make sure those that have already been confirmed or not confirmed and especially this is those who simply wants to privatize public education knows nothing what education has no background in education and his will be very dangerous to 2 children and our future. End of story so I appreciate folks I eat apple Facebook post is not enough you really must pick up the phone and call call the senators or on that those is subcommittees at men the entire membership of the Senate you know this is going to be voting on this important nominee  that's that's what I have for tonight I do the person about the liaison committee the topic of polling locations come up it did not the election is my understanding on March 7th so perhaps Josh you could maybe send a reminder to whoever about that particular topic so that we can well after I had a meeting with councilmember Sally else and two people from the city and they were looking into just who they have to talk to to make sure that we know longer as voting going on at alencon because that is the most impacted school because of the location of where the polling location is to make that you're nodding we are at the elementary schools at all but the other ones that they please have a separate area and they're not as heavily impacted as Elric on where the people walk right through the school to get to the polling location and so we have asked that that will not be used in the city is offering alternative public facility locations that could be used hoping that that will help  sweeten the pot off to just move the location of the liaison committee was one stop pick you didn't mention that was discussed which was very preliminary discussions about whether there's something we could do together about affordable housing with preference for district please or something like that it's looking into that there's no it's not like any distance or Mater do you like that or any concrete plans but we're investigating the possibility that we can meet mutual interest of the city to have as Sunday's event fashion show for the experience and I put all the people that showed up and spent money in spite of the pouring rain in the pleasant outdoor conditions I also wanted to say that up present Vanessa Pineda she is the audit and charge on a annual independent Financial District audit as well as Apple Financial independent audit well which we will be wrapping up probably within the next month or so and so she's going to be presenting our 2015 keep an annual independent audit report  turn the lights on said my name is Vanessa Keenan to the report first will begin with our independent Auditors pinion so this is just our opinion on the financial statements for Penny and the financial statements are for early in all material respect as of June 30th 2016 and the respect respect of changes in financial position are in accordance with accounting generally accepted also like to talk about the position as a whole as you guys know last year the gas b68 said which included I'm districts in showing their net pension liability from her sisters but actually this year the tote deposition decrease $2000000 and although the net pension liability increase due to revenues increasing and expenditures decreasing there was an a please of Timberland the first the position is a really high amount as you could see the negative amount but most of it is relating to net pension ability also had a few other opinions second opinion is on the on the state compliance if there is the skittle words there was unmodified opinion there is no material weaknesses and no significant deficiencies were ported for app rewards we tested two different programs the first one we tested was a nutrition so that's all the different program that you guys have relate so breakfast lunch go
