okay good evening everyone it is 7:01 and we are going to start our meeting tonight on the board is all present we're going to do a flag Loot and Robert Queen is going to lead us tonight what no thank you Robert we have nothing to announce closed session with no strange adoption of the agenda Revolution to be adopted moving on to the consent agenda is in by have anything to pull off the consent agenda  I can I get emotion on that so I moved all those in favor excellent moving right along quite quickly this evening issues D recognition from Congress member Karen bass is office where's your little piece of paper oh my goodness okay here I am Hamilton field representative in charge of Education the Congress member Karen bass is here to acknowledge our US Department of Education Green Ribbon School District sustainability award thank you for giving me a few minutes to convey to you can Congress member Karen basses congratulations on this achievement I medication to be in and out of Culver City Schools over the last three and a half years and I always appreciate that they are an atmosphere in which children can learn a little more easily because they are both healthy and attractive and I'm delighted that the United States Department of Education has honored Culver City with the Green Ribbon Schools award and I really congratulate you because over three years those the Green Ribbon Schools the state early efforts of the schools yielded reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 29% water usage by 20% as well as fostering healthier indoor what's the dimmer conducive to student learning and I have here a certificate from Congress member bass on this occasion noting this important achievement and recognition so thank you very match and congratulations to you all yes ma'am Happy Thanksgiving Robert you going to have me diorama baseball cards all about it seriously what's up with the my desk yo Jackson what's up with all the ants up on the Dyess here make city council member can tell us there's ants everywhere was doing the Banana superintendent's report good evening interim superintendent Liz Lockhart evening so long since we've last spoken and so many things have happened but I want to just kind of highlight a few things today we met our new CC the teachers and many of them were involved in the new teacher Institute over the past week they have been working very hard to get prepare for the school year I'm sure please Tracy's going to speak about that more but I do want to thank Diane Randall Kelly Wilcox Allison brown leaves Michelle and Becky Lynch for all the work they have done to get our teachers ready and indoctrinated in the ccusd way also today we had the coaches Retreat which was sponsored by the high school that was for a Middle School and High School coaches soda boys worked hard and Tom Salter worked hard on that last night I went to the grade parent orientation meeting when she was held by dr. Cooper and her awesome staff and we started this two years ago as a way to as ninth grade parents ourselves so that we can support each other in this interesting time. Called high school and if you have any High School didn't you realize that you need to rely on each other and find a friend you know kind of like your your support buddy so it's been going on it was very well turn that lots of great information was given by councillors by booster club president some PTA council is just a lot what to the El Rincon welcome family picnic and that was fun and had a great meeting with Jim Limbaugh from West LA looking forward to growing partnership and we will be having lunch there with Jim and some of his staff a doctor Cooper dr. Michelle Veronica Montes and I will be going to that  I also want to congratulate our senior executive sistance and our executive cyst Rebecca Williams Lashana Raiford Sylvia how to get and Mary Soto for creating and coordinating a successful I'm going to make sure I say it in the right voice Coffee Talk and so that was a great for them to coordinate that that was for a School site secretary and a School site admin distance just to kind of bring everybody together and set the tone for the new year so they did a lot of work and it was a really wonderful event I also attended the lake super intense regional meeting which was very interesting simply because there are a lot of services that I did not know that laco provided provide it including a group of about I don't know 4 or 500 interns looking for jobs teacher interns looking for John that we did how did they hide that amount that we can kind of tap into every superintendent there was asking about help with in the areas of special education and sign Anson and math and they're like all that's interesting as we have these teachers that are looking for jobs but you guys didn't know just to call us and let us know if so so that's that's good I'm glad that we have that I'm glad that I I went  so that's superintendent until Trace actually brought like something for me to change my hair so that I can just move over to the HR but switch my bangs over in but what I'm going to do right now I want to present officially to the board Robert Quinn we have had already in announcement that Robert Quinn is to be my new CBL effective September 1st I'm just going to read a little bit about him even though he has made me cut out most of it tell Robert Quinn currently serves as a director of Information Technology for ccusd and he has been part of our district for 18 years Christa Quinn has use the skills and knowledge of the 21st century technology to implement high-performing technological solutions that allow for full educational use of technology for thousand students in 800 employees his passion for looking past the events of today and into the possibilities of tomorrow let him to obtain his chief business official certification from the California Association of school business officials after successfully completing the school business management program through USC rossier School of Education numbers in the inner workings of state and local public and school finances governmental laws budgets and changes at impact districts at the local level you understands and measures sea Bond and that the related construction projects are a high priority for ccusd and has immersed himself in every area of that process he is saying the intricacies of management and financing and has worked closely with Harrison Associates and and has his own music Balfour Beatty mr. Quinn has strong connections to Culver City Community has lived in the city for 20 years and is married to a life mom called play Resident  the graduate from Culver City High School and both of his children went through ccusd schools graduating from cchs in 2000 8 and 2011 he is committed and collaborative and in a futuristic leader and who will work with all School stakeholders to make sure ccusd is using it's spinning power to maximize outcomes for a world-class education for students congratulations Robert Quinn thank you listening board members and everybody else is not really much I can if all of that it's it's been a long it's been a long journey a long process there's a lot of people here tonight they were very supportive Mike and Mary Soto right from years ago I've been helping me on this path and I have to say thank you to my wife Kathy who's been of course my biggest supporter forever but especially through this process I can say is I'm excited to continue working even more closely with a lot of people who are like a second family to me it's a joy to come to work it's a joy to see their faces and it's a joy to work with them so that's the biggest thing and of course probably the biggest bonus of taking this job is that I don't have to be on the calendar committee rainbow I will find a way thank you for everyone thank you for your confidence in me  thank you Robert somebody have any comments or  know ya welcome if  I am also happy to introduce our new assistant principal at Culver City High School is jonique Burton Miss Burton has made quite impact in the field of Education during her 15 years working with student staff parent groups and community members she has been described as possessing the characteristics of a server painter a leader who steps into any role in order to fulfill a need and provide support to the students and Community she serves she's been described as an energetic personable and an approach planner who is passionate about Student Success and accountability she's an instructional leader who makes it a high priority to enrich the lives of her students by aligning curriculum to student chemicals prior to joining ccusd Miss Britain served as assistant principal for curriculum at Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities and Nexus administrator for North Central High School in Indianapolis Indiana she has also served as an Algebra 2 team leader. Sistent leader at Marshall High School in Missouri Texas and as an algebra 1 English as a new language mathematics teacher at sharptown High School in Houston Texas Joni coordinated program designed to remediate and prepare students for the State's graduation qualification exam which resulted in about 50% of the testers passing exam with increasing their school scores as much as 120 points she has intimate knowledge and building the school master schedule supervising and supporting teachers in mathematics inside dr. Burton received her degree as an educational specialist from Ball State University Masters public administration human resources and principals license from Texas 7 reversi and her ba degree is in mathematics from Tennessee State University we'd like to welcome Miss Joni vertical Racine Unified I just want to say thank you so much  I stumbled upon Culver City on edjoin.org when my husband who's got the little one in the back after little one so you know I had to take this job in California it's my time to be promoted and I said well let me start look for a job and I was hoping that this job was a master schedule and that's what I wanted to do is it as an AP cuz I love this Matrix but I'm grateful I'm so happy to be in California love this weather no more -14 temperatures anymore no more snow so I thank the board I thank you Leslie thank you Tracy I thank you and I my rock my rock my right is right behind him come on over here not at home is my husband James Burton play little kids James Burton Jr Jillian bird who be at Lynn Hale and Justine Burton from my principal and my assistant principals and my the performers is the principal. Michelle have been excellent in all of the faculty and parents that I've been meeting and the kids they're wonderful and I look forward to being a part of the Culver's family have to find a house in Culver City no welcome to Culver City created the 9th grade orientation Karen thing last night I was there cuz I have a 9th grader call me pictures of here I'm just graduated So Lisa dr. Mustafa Cooper doesn't have to deal with me anymore and a capacity and I'll still be there but anybody else last hour. Never heard anyone say I'm excited to be a master scheduler that's great play the house like a puzzle in a Rubik's Cube actually good looking forward to getting to know you okay I don't have any high school as yet but I will very soon but you're doing a great team I know you've already figured that out and we're glad to have you in Los Angeles I said we're good conversation and they were like I felt like a celebrity alright and do you have anything further on your other hats that was the tallest president Palace and board members and I'm just going off of what Leslie had talked about with the new teachers Institute of 26 fabulous teachers we're really excited for and I know you will be as well as you get to know them they spent a whole week last week basically without Carla Madrid Allison Brown add Diane Randall who really crafted a wonderful new teachers Institute for the elementary teachers and the secondary treat teachers as well what time with their Department chairs getting to know their subject what a typical schedule was like getting to know the curriculum and everything if that's so we really answer I did this last year and we got such wonderful feedback from a based on last year's Impressions that we took this week before school started to repair them in kind of our signature practices so they came back today for the orientation so we know that they're ready and an excited sit down and start school and start with their with the three days of professional development that start tomorrow in addition I don't know if anybody got a chance to go outside yesterday between 9:05 and we had a great time we took some of them the solar viewers that we have in the dish and and shut them all over to the middle school so that the 6th grade orientation and the camp Panther that was going on there with the incoming Raiders and the web leaders and the parents all had a chance to take a little break from the orientation and get a chance to see the eclipse mom so we have the full Middle School there but they weren't the only ones in the district I have a I heard and I saw some pictures that there were some some viewing parties going man in the parking lot the district office and love I own I kept getting these self in my Friday memo send you all collages staff members viewing flips here in Culver City and in Oregon and number of teachers at home actually took advantage of that in addition I wanted to come up and put a little plug in for our booth at Fiesta La Vienna this weekend and thank Rebecca Williams where I'm setting that up setting up the schedule as she always does every year and and getting that coordinated for us come by this year we're going to be offering all you know giving are anybody who comes by the booth some information about her school district and in addition this year will be providing some resources that we've I'm gather through the in Mission respect and diversity task force so any sorts of questions that that community members may have about the school district's rule and I'm promoting on inclusion and respect and diversity will have those materials on hand for for their Community excited about sad and then I'm last but not least I wanted to kind of give the board a quick update on some events that are Arts coordinator I was just going through so as you know this is our Centennial coming up on on September 20th and as you may recall we had banners we had a centennial Banner contest and I just wanted to give the board an update about that we will be purchasing the a set of those banners for the School District said that we'll have some of the representative vanners from our students on here but also just wanted to let anybody know that banners will be presented at the Party in the Park to the artist and given back to the family so each family will get their Banner to as as a little bit of a prize and if any of the community wants any of the banners on there available for sale this week at the fiesta 425 bars for each Banner  and you also may know related to the Centennial that last year during the Centennial Gala the Sony entertainment gave the Culver gift of the Culver City Education Foundation a a project some subseed funding for a legacy art back and so I wanted to let the board know that that the plans are underway for a series of benches that is inspired by Art and readings from 4th and 5th grade elementary school students from across the schools and I'll be house housed out side the high school for all to enjoy and the idea there is that all students and all roads lead to Culver City High School so all of the students will there with their work will be housed in one location at the high school Dan and the unveiling will be on Wednesday September 20th from 2:30 to 3:30 in front of the high school and we'll have an unveiling there and I'm hoping that members of the community can join us for that and then finally with all of our wonderful Renovations going on at Frost we wanted to take this moment to thank the city to Susan over the city of Culver City Susan oboro and Mart something to this for helping us as we continue our renovation it for the frost I just wanted to let the board know and the community know that for this coming school year we've already booked over 1000 hours at the vets auditorium for school programming with no charge to the school district so it's a really wonderful partnership and a turn down it's it's due to these good relations that we have with this with the city that were able to continue our school programming with little effect to your student experience so that's my report thank you thank you very much like all over schools getting ready for the start of school this coming Monday it's a very exciting time Robert and I will be checking to see if any last-minute issues arise that we need to take care of we're hoping for a very smooth start mom adopted budget adopted budget has been approved by Los Angeles County Office of Education with the unqualified certif and finally the financing Excellence committee we met last week to a review potential ways to increase your fun do the summer vacations Etc the turnout was very light but very good ideas were shared by the community members who did it in we appreciated their efforts thank you  already and I have no cards from members of the audience is muddy out there have anything that they wanted to say shut up alright can you make sure that you sorry it's been awhile since I've been to a meeting I forgot the formality I'm Stephane with Ben Suga parent at the middle school now just finished elmarie exciting game tonight with Katie Krantz she's going to be taking over for us at El Marino as our clean air committee Leah is home and I just wanted to thank the board and Mike and Tracy so glad you here as well it's amazing 75% of the air conditionings in so they are filtrate when is is it's working it's it's very exciting and I'm glad to have been on this journey with you all I've been told to 25% left of the class terms are going to be installed in the next 2 weeks so good times and I look forward to seeing what presents itself to me at the middle school and weekend Bill Bridges together continue and happy retirement thank you so much thank you Monica's head yes in terms of the last 25% over there no Marino just confirming that and and welcome I'm sorry Katie welcome to this project and I just a question go ahead that wasn't  oh you were asking my okay I'm spots to the meeting that took last week you guys have another turn the calendar we haven't calendar eyes that yet but we will we will soon I'm sure  October Clover Hill. I was there too and I'll say something about it when it's my turn to XP but on two members of the board and Kelly in the first  okay yeah so it's been a long time so I feel overwhelmed about the summer but I'll just catch people up on a couple things so we had a ccusd funding meeting hosted by our advantage and and lots of members of the community members various people who are interested in supporting our financial stability not just from the district side but all Ed Foundation side and how we can get to a place where we can really afford all of the programs and infrastructure dreams that we have so that was really what Devin I really enjoyed the ideas that were shared we had some presentations from Santa monica-malibu Unified School District Ed foundation and what experience have been with their efforts at increasing their fundraising so we hope to continue that conversation I'm looking forward to more I hope as many people come next time as came the first time same thing with the financing Excellence committee made a big turnout at the first one I hope we get a big turnout if we continue that conversation and then I think the only other thing that all share is that over the summer I do this professional conference called local progress and it took place in Austin this year and so it's a national organization that or it's locally elected officials and they have a whole school board cohorts really cool and you get a day-long of professional development training and you get to network with colleagues and it's a fabulous opportunity but because it's also a municipal group so Cityside as well we get to participate in the various City efforts Texas is going through a lot they've got some stuff so we rallied and walked March down to the Capitol Building to 2 resist there what's called they're show me your papers bill I think it's called sb4 and it's their equivalent to what Arizona had some time ago so anyway was 104 degrees that was a pretty interesting experience but we went down and showed our support for our elected colleagues in Texas and are the opportunity to meet the vice mayor of Charlottesville at this meeting so incredible that was before everything went down and he's you know me incredible efforts and gotten annual funding into his City budget for Equity it's a reparations package Charlottesville is paying family to get there black residents sent to historically black universities and to get subsidized housing in to get all these really wonderful opportunities for jobs who is telling the story in it was very moving and proceeded to talk about how there was going to be this rally coming up and that KKK were coming and they were going to the he didn't know but he knew it was going to be gnarly and then sure enough it got a gnarly so it was a pretty wild experience forgotten had the honor of being able to meet him he's an incredible leader he's very inspiring and I know that we're going to read a statement regarding Charlottesville so I'll leave that to the board president and I'll add that you know the board certainly in the school district Stan only against white supremacy and hate and also I just wanted to take the opportunity to reaffirm my commitment to supporting students and families and having more explicit conversations then we may be had in the past about history and biases and fear and some of the privileges that some of us are afforded in might take for granted and so I just went and courage folks to continue to reach out to their board members and let us know stayed like from us in the wake of some of these National storms that are taking place and I look forward to hearing from people that's it summer I attended a couple weeks ago the Baldwin Hills Community advisory panel and there's really nothing to poured out but it was a good opportunity for me to see how the various agencies come together I went as a sub for Kelly who is our rep for that panel but it was a good same for me to see how the various agencies come together to to put the concerns of the community on the table and I look forward to possibly going to Mortals meeting in the future and not much else I registered my 7th and 8th grader at the middle school I just want to come in the middle school I know it's a huge job time to register so many students in the each year I've been there has seemed to make it a smoother transition and are very intentional and they're planning which is great not only for parents who have been there for a while but for incoming families to see that Culver City is we're always thinking ahead about ways we can make it better for our families I'm looking forward to attending the Congressional conversation next Tuesday I believe a couple of the other field play board members are going with congresswoman Karen bass and I believe you can go online and register for that on her website through event play further community members to attend that at the senior center and and I just want to welcome back all of our teachers and staff and look forward to this coming year and seeing everyone Fiesta La Ballona so there was this Eclipse yesterday which  on one hand I'm sorry I didn't travel to go see totality we had a lot going on in the family but on the other hand man I got to be here for my daughters for registration and my daughter's 9th grade orientation and talk to the link crew beforehand so they knew how to tell people to safely see the eclipse and all that stuff and I understand that went pretty well so that's good and I do have to say that 9th grade orientation my 9th grader went into it  apprehensive a little bit Trisha's house this all going to go and so forth and she came home happy and excited and I made new friends and my you know I have the check info for my link crew leader and all that soap for that one and a total evidence it work really well so I'm really happy about that I see the funding Excellence meeting turned out with small I thought the conversation was really good ideas are basically three concepts for how to raise additional money to help us continue movie an excellent school district and take it to the next level one of those will involve if it gets pursued it'll involve talking to the city council in the city and all that stuff and I hope to bring that up at the liaison meeting if maybe this coming Lee is on meeting or if not at the one after but that's a conversation we got to have we should follow up on on the community ideas there The Edge fundations example of what happened in Santa Monica what was really interesting to it seemed to me that there's lessons to be learned there from their experience about what to do and what not and take advantage of that  and I'm sure I have lots of other stuff I should be telling you about but I can't remember it's been a crazy summer and I hope we're ready for the school year  Anton 2 answers right I feel like I've ants all over me because there's ants seem to be line dance on our side and family I got one mr. Erickson tells me that  John nachbar lawn it tomorrow to clean them away Regina Greenway I'm sure while he's here I do want to recognize Stefan I messed up on a long time I'm Reno and as a PTA president and I apply the Clean Air Group along with Rania and several other folks and I just want to publicly thank you I'm you she in fostering some really positive elaborative relationships and Partnerships with the district and the city all within I'm out of patience and kindness and respect and I think that was a huge I valued that I know the district guy that and we got to where we are because of you my time with Shay and DC receiving our Ward we definitely talk to all the parents who are critical and giving their time and you are absolutely one of those so thank you and I hope that you can do more of that in the Middle School Oakley always need more like you to keep doing the pushing those types of Partnerships forward I know CC of the accommodations continuing their executive director search so looking forward to that and also being able to publicly thank Leslie Adler I'm in September the end of September when the board meetings in the 26th so hopefully we'll have a lot of people there too kind of resent her and thank her for her work she's done for our district the Sandy Segal youth Health Center it's looking like the lacdc which is liking the children's Development Center will be stopping to provide the services turn the 2017-2018 a counseling services in Venice Family Clinic is looking to take over the services will continue to be free from medical covered students butt you didn't know about 30% of the children we had that received those Mental Health Services are on Medi-Cal and the van is Venice Family Clinic in a depending on funding charge the non medical students I know that Health Center is looking into other options but I just want to keep it on everyone's radar that the health center is always looking for you know funding we have the gallon in February we've all talked about the important need for counseling services and general for our students and the things I go through what's the political climate at all kinds of different issues so definitely want to keep that free as their charger indicates and make sure we keep trying though services for kids and then the fiesta this weekend many of your favorite electives and Culver City Folk will be at the beer and wine Garden this Friday at 5 p.m. I think openings at 6 so you'd like to come and chat with us and hang out with us will be there to also be at the booth on Saturday we signed up too early did we no no okay on Saturday yeah just in response what you said about the health center I think it might be useful at some future meeting to come with what services from the health center and here's how the various things are paid for and so forth because she's our liaison conversation will talk to the one with two name silver there  correct it is my turn I had a fabulous summer so having a fabulous summer because it's not over with yet my kids don't leave till next month so  I need to get serious for a minute because we as a community and we as a district we as a board  look at what's happened out in our country and in the world and and the State and things happen we we want our community to know that we are paying attention and that we care and with regard to Charlottesville you know like many people run the world we were shocked by the acts of violence and hatred and and just the rhetoric weew just recently in Charlottesville as Educators as members of a community that cares it is our responsibility not only to condemn such racist ethnic Prejudice and to talk with our students about those issues but also to embrace our diversity within the community we have we are very proud of a reputation as a district that supports and celebrates its diversity and as we prepare for the new school year stats already back go back on Monday we want to reaffirm our commitment to Unity within our schools and serving as positive role models role models and also safe  safe safe Haven's not just safe spaces with girls that are kids can turn to Rubble in a ranking US News Nations fourth most diverse District in same stand firmly Against Racism violence or turn on our campuses I want to get a little more specific based on what went down in Charlottesville we stand against princess in other racist organization we stand against neo-nazis in other anti-semitic organizations we stand against will make another anti-lgbt organizations moreover we are working every day to improve our schools and ensure that each every student has a respectful safe and positive experience every time they set foot on a CCSD campus can't learn if you're not feeling and you can't learn if you're not  do you have any breakfast right so it mean these are the things that we think about and we care about and we take care of here and call we encourage you to stand with us and to join Educators Across the Nation and denouncing racism Cobra pride is about more than just being proud of our academic play Deck and artistic accomplishments color pride is about standing up to intolerance wherever we see it and knowing that our Collective efforts will make a positive difference allies of the students and families we serve that means standing up and not standing by and I think we will all commit we all can commit to that do not standing by in silence but to speak up and we look forward to a productive safe and wonderful 2017-2018 school year with that we have next on our agenda recess but we able to move right along with that I believe we have a need for a break at all and Buddy the good what's up I'm good. She was recommended for the new employment contract for the position of assistant superintendent Business Services emotional moved  any discussion all those in favor 2 of 14.1 resolution for 2017-2018 size the science building placement problems with the attached resolution confirming the location of the new science building so we discussed this topic and our work shop last Tuesday and Chris is standing up there but believe that the resolution speaks for itself can I get a motion you're not, any discussion I will not just add one thing not to the resolution but just to be sure we're going to have some sort of press something and then also can the Press peace include our conversation compensating for the outdoor space for kids  something so that cuz people asking and it's important in Robin thank you I'm the one who asked for this resolution I want to make a comment on it just to be really clear it's not we're not trying to antigen I know that this is the sort of decision that wouldn't ordinarily require a vote of the board I just felt because we talked about it a little bit and then controversial and so forth we did all that at a workshop that it was good to bring it to a regular meeting and make sure that if anybody in the public wanted to know about it they had a couple shots at blood and I would pay you back on that to say that you know of are  charge here as board members personnel plan budget curriculum V pieces facility so this is actually a very big part of what it is that we are charged with I'm not just sort of working with any kind of bond money that may may be in any kind of a silly switch it to make a decision about the best after discussion and after input from staff and and principals who are impacted by this the best placement for for said new building so does that is a structure and when it we can't lose very easily so I'm all those in favor right on word to 14.2 change order for to multiply on Construction contract with Brian Devries Construction so actually 14.2 through 14.5 are all change orders for beautification scope so the next board meeting will have some more change orders and some bid projects with these are all to incorporate vacations go if we got DSA approval on Thursday for all the beautification scope so we are open forward full bore on those activities tomorrow want to approve this the scope is with Brian Devries we've got the structural steel with beautification scope that's under $70,000 same three RDM electric that's $162,000 and then 14 V  demolition associated with it for $31,000 and then buddy have questions about any of those in particular can you take them all at once to you coming in with change orders all the pit seems like the entire beautification work is coming in with change orders would you have predicted that or is it about what's it about time will not all of it is so I can next meeting there's going to be a number of packages that we bid out publicly so we chose to approaches so we can do change order that's less than 10% of the contract value it's a little bit more expeditious so if we feel we're getting a good price week will it forward as a change order some of the work that we're doing for instance like the glazing we don't have any glazing in the original scope of work so we have to fit those out so we're betting out of four or five different packages as public bids for glazing for case work for the general construction for sing for the ticket booth so there's a lot of them that are we could have potentially done the general contracting work as a change order however we didn't think getting a competitive price so we chose to bid that out so I see so it's the original all the scope of work to all change orders however you can make that work for the frost I understand now doing the same type of work so RDM who's doing the electrical work the contractor there we put it out somebody else could win the work into it's working on the same stuff at the same time comes of coordination issue so you have to kind of pick and choose but a lot of it is not just to change order but it's beautification scope for this package two three four and five can I have motion all those in favor I think we brought had discussion and  can I have a motion to adjourn John move we adjourn in honor of the people in Charlottesville  the people who which people are Charlottesville the people were killed and injured as a result of I've certainly been second then we're done I can get used to this YouTube
