Cooper to who's a little bit on the Rope thank you so much well first of all I don't think there's any words to show our petition from the high school on all that you have done for our students and community the relationship that you built with our students is incredible to the point that they hear everything you say respected and take it as words of wisdom and guidance what they do so we definitely appreciate it and I know I was just talking when I came in it was so funny I'm not going to say what it was but there was no the email that he got the date after he retired and I was included on it so they're pretty funny reply that he have but once he appreciates her retirement have fun and enjoy and I will remember that your parent on our campus now but we definitely appreciate everything out not even express how much you've done for our school if our students It's amazing And if I reached out and touched at least one student I know I did the right thing thank you so much talk to you right now also that Elsa Priya franke's from the middle school and I didn't know if you wanted to come up and say a few words to Al and I know Ted is here well and so I'm honestly what you have done for our school pools over the years is measurable and so it's not just about the service and support but it is about the relationships and the way that you have done that work and I mean we could be here all night can I have the card from Buffalo to Toronto I have enough now too long but in the time that I have known I'm whenever I've call that for him for assistance counseling or anything he always shows up he shows up with a smile and I think the thing that I admire most is that he talks to kids like human beings he's very good about just putting himself in their shoes and counseling them as as a parent doesn't dolt and just letting them know these these These are consequences for your actions this is what want to think about and and I really really appreciate having us support whenever I needed him he's there and he's always just very supportive and also thank you so much for all your help and we're going to miss you  thank you Crystal Chihuahua I'm sorry to say thank you on behalf of the athletic department at Culver City Bicycle myself that is the young people that do guided way you handled yourself as a police officer and just as a member of our community an outstanding that your input is more significant than you'll ever know with these young people and I know 10 15 20 years down the line I'll come to fruition and other ways and I wish you the best in your retirement I know that big plans and I hope that you take the time you haven't had and do all those fun things congratulations LSU coming up awesome we just wanted to thank you for all your hard work you've done for the school in the community you make the students feel safe and comfortable you're always there at the right time I remember once I was really driving and student got hit by car would be appropriate play  addressed with the various issues that that came up that you had to get involved in and it was completely professional and made us feel safe and and respected as teachers as well thank you for that  Alex we're going to miss your smiling face just going to miss seeing you around on campuses and getting up from you but I know I'll see you around the communities though just very much Miss Patsy members of board cabinet and community of amazing programs throughout City Unified School District I'm up to and including Avid which it is really really powerful in terms of deep and lasting impacts on families and so I'd like to call up Kevin crop fail to talk a little bit about this program and introduce some of its students and amazing teacher and coordinator  thank you who's here is been especially be wonderful middle school with are Avid team we are free wonderful teachers at amazing students and I thank the board for your support in the AL what process in the funding of our AVID program extremely important dark Tunes who are right there in the middle who know can go right over the top and just be a maze amazing students in off to for your college right out of high school so that we have it here in a minute or High School I'd like to invite a pictures up students to give you a little presentation about would have it as doing at our Middle School hello I could sell Mendoza Christina Halloran Haley Torres is any of the teachers and support staff of the Cork City Middle School AVID program and verbally proud of the work that are twins are doing and the path that they are probably towards call we have two of them with us here who put together a video too kind of highlight for you with Avid is about  my name is Bryce Spencer I'm Justin Bieber Jesse that as any questions at all recognize the program in that way for its academic and personal impact on the lives and belief systems with kids is it Christmas sweater day I love them though I do have one question one cup and one question is can you tell me what Cornell about says so Cora notes is a Hallmark of the AVID program my babe was rudely started in Cornell officially because some students weren't quite passing their courses and it's a concept of taking the time to Spence went to take notes in the classroom but you do something with notes that isn't welts hot and that is to revisit because often students take notes and then they go in the folder and they seem like that but truly what we try and teach it is the purpose of note-taking is ultimately to get a good grade in the class will you do that by taking the note in the class skip the next evening you on we talked to a colleague or to a teacher about something you were confused about so that be, tool a mechanism to visit Buys so that you retain the information that's fantastic thanks and then I also wanted to say that when we went to which is the state School Board conference last year in San Diego and I was super knew at that point I don't even know if we have been sworn in I can't remember I was so new and I went down there and the very first thing I learned was that the entire State anyone who's anyone who believes in like act lesson really supporting kids to be successful in college believes that they do it through Avid and and so I was so excited to know that it was a strong and driving program so I love having it highlighted and thank you so much I'm very excited about it  well I don't have questions like teach a huge fan of of avid I'm a huge fan Cornell notes and if Kelly if you would like them come to your house and teach your children how to my kids larded and they're not to have it so I mean it gets around is she she wasn't excited about the time I love the work that you do mittman Ching Avid is is a whole separate subject and requires quite a bit of teacher preparation every single class I know that and I also know that show you some good speakers and I have been not too good about getting them so far but I will get you more I promise because one of the other things that they do and they have classes bringing guests where's the students get a better understanding of all the possible career paths that are out there and so anyone who's watching this video right one in the audience who might be just talked to the students about what you do for living and what your career path was to get there can communicate with me and I'll get you in touch with the right people to make that thank you and you guys going to field trip today  so I was going to just take the time or an after than just working on any skills it's really about a family to you tell tell tell the board about how things are done adventureplex was the first one that we've been on so far and it was a pushed them through it to get through the force record breaking down yeah the creative team me and 5 other students had idea to make the video and we all put our ideas together to write the lyrics put action obviously would be after the winter we have Tuesdays and Thursdays mine is. wives that would be after lunch I think when she put a c tutorial and it's process it kind of gives a better sense we you thank you so much thank you okay now we're on to 8 points of the super intense report thank you so much Miss pass Palace and esteem members of the board cabinet and Community there is lot going on in our schools and I hope that as week of wine down and get to winter break up it'll be a really valued and appreciated time for all of students in families and not only spend time with each other kind of wine down but also to really appreciate all that we've done this year so far which is been really really and truly extraordinary last week I had the opportunity to go with the high school's APPA dance team as well Hooper's of that  dance troupe now so girls who code to do a Alberta performance at at Google Venice Beach I mean it was really an extraordinary thing to be a puppet of because it really demonstrated that intersection of Arts and Technology and a way that I think is about as real as it gets in regards to Career academic opportunities blending and intercepting really in a way that is very new to schools perrita even 10 15 years ago that career and academic Endeavors the Arts and when you know your court are are are really part and parcel of the same going forward so I encourage people to check that out of the van on all of our social media channels and whatnot another I wanted to update the board Community about is our calendar process overall and so I'm two weeks ago we asked our parent for input on a survey to help inform our school year calendar on for 2017-18 1819 and the feedback that we got was great and I'm extensive and really helps to inform the calendar process overall which as you know is it would go ciated item through our bargaining teams no just wanted to kind of update the board on that we have surveys buying out right now I'm through who are collective bargaining units to remembers collecting further interest in kind of narrowing down the scope of that decision I'm over all those are really big decisions that have lots of different interest and impacts on all sorts medical groups in so you can imagine that parents want to make sure that I'm appropriate break and place for their students that teachers have concerns about semester stop an end times and I'm impact for example on a p program Freight how many instructional days are before or after an AP exam also concerns about summer camp opportunities right that exist in summer enrichment and so I'm doing that at the way that involves all of those opinions and perspectives is really important it's important to me of commune repeat that I'm to our members overall and the way in which we do that and have that dip course is also important right that it's civil and that it makes sense and that we do the best that we can to all extend paw to have the most comprehensive calendar that needs all of our needs all of the time and so just wanted to update the board on that so I'm that's happening I'm throughout this weekend I'm will be revisiting that I'm on finally so thank you  thank you Amelia yes Miss Pat cast members of the school board members of cabinet and Community good evening I'd like to start off of on my report with a thank you to the entire Community for participating in last week's hour of code it was so much fun to go visit the school suck it's easy participation across all of our student that all of our schools in this really important I call it an exposure it but it's so important for our students to be participating in computer science week and I ripped saw a lot of kids having a lot of fun what's that so we will continue Culver boating.com is still up so anybody who missed last week there's there's no deadline you can keep coding acreage the entire Community including us adults to try it out there a lot of resources on there for us to really start promoting up to at 2 even higher level and you can expect to see at a paper turn out even next year I'm also I wanted to just let you all let everybody know about kind of what's coming up on the horizon with our past interim assessments that will beat you'll be hearing a lot more about that in January but just to let everybody know that during January will of the school sites are all prepared to kind of start engaging their staff and familiarizing with the interim assessments and this is really important piece of other of the entire assessment cycle allows us to kind of set their students and enter staff frankly to to the riggers in the content of the summative assessments that all of that are students taking the spring time so we're really made it to be able to kind of look at that in an interactive process so that our students and our staff kind of can look at the the test and use it as a you too also will be doing that throughout February and March also I've been seeing some board members out about over the last week that it's winter holiday concert season and it's been such a wonderful Showcase of our music program of greatly enjoyed the ranging from our kindergarteners at El Rincon to our seniors in the AVP a music department it's been just a wonderful demonstration across our sites and I highly encourage for communities to committee members to to visit the sites for the upcoming concerts this week I'll suggest update on an hour from our recent board resolution that the board put together on on creating a safe known for Power District there's been an email and we've had a wonderful response for interest in after diversity and respect task force so we'll be prepared to kind of engage the community in a series of meetings main up in the new there for that and then fine  it doesn't really close it's been really really remarkable and very excited to convince the community and this process it seems like I will have a really it'll provide a nice forum for for those of us to provide support for creating that space and creating a common language for everybody and then finally how exciting is it for one of her very own to be highest and given a full-ride scholarship to LMU though and we're very pleased to know that the hard works at the hard work and Vacation by Laura born with her Mentor through the the organizations with which she was involved resulted in such a wonderful life changing trajectory for her and we wish her all the best and that's my report thank you and my aunt is 13 Engle have our and seven games and each game when team was eliminated until we have one winner they each member received two movie tickets each and it was just really fun small game 2 everybody in the giving mood and we are also we just finished our December class bores which we that's anything written this year grade is burning points and at the end of the year is a great of the most points will win some sort of party props thing so sixth graders have been points the 7th graders protect points and the 8th graders have 20 which is a big surprise for us  and we just finished our snowballing funder for if you don't know what it is we put green posters on teachers doors and students by snowballs that are these little white papers and put them on the teachers lowers and the teachers of the most snowballs dress up as either a snowman or gingerbread man and we had our asasp advisor dress today as an elf which is a lot of fun and we're halfway through our spirit week which started out on Monday Monday Monday we're dressed up as a pun and today was festive Tuesday eats all the holiday sweaters and tomorrow will be wild animal and say and Thursdays tie-dye Thursday and Friday film Friday and every day at lunch we have different lunch time activities thank you I actually really enjoyed my cost you if I put bread I'm weird on my neck and I was a gingerbread weapon because my hair is ginger I got it  okay Meg you're up our ports pretty short due to it being dead week with finals that's why we call it again November 30th and drive and we donated over $0.60 and we are currently planning are with Rachel Snyder are you still working a festive sweater High School yeah okay  two good evening I am Rachel snot during a social studies teacher for 23 years Culver City High School Wells the academic support coordinator please note that the point I am making this evening are reflective of a concession at an informal you have 9 Social Studies department members this morning while at home we have concern about the overall procedures regarding create a new school calendars for the district I do understand that this is part of the collective negotiations however year after year there is a failure to really get an understanding from the factory regarding our views and I have a collection of emails I have turned over the last probably 8 years regarding the process  the needs of the three levels are differently different but can't be a question that people off get our district based on pie School particularly graduation rates college admissions and AP scores to choosing a schedule are not informed with the other grade levels were not informed with this recent vote the reasons for the earlier start dates which would clearly benefit the high school and finish their first semester before winter turn their fault for final exams as well no teachers were notified there to even be a district meeting with only the three Union presidents and teachers rep isn't it so that we could give  are pinions are in express our concern before the three schedules are equal created for the check employees to vote  essentially asked what was the point of the high school attempting its Grand experiment this past semester as we haven't as a fat they had a chance to even discuss our Impressions because we haven't even finished the master  Bill overwhelmingly after discussing with my students Garfield and are thrilled that they're going to be done with a final exams before went break  based on the vote of the light late start date that we are now going down there is no way the high school finished finals before winter break next year  to give you an idea of why we are frustrated by the lack of information let's start dates to be entire District staff one social studies teacher spoke with a few OCD teachers this morning about the vote and they shared they voted for later start when the social studies teacher explains why there was an early start date they expressed they had no idea what I all these years there had been and early start date had they known impact on the high school they would have voted for the early schedule call APM econ teachers have already term it that there will be no way for them to ship her and offer both AP government and econ to our seniors next year seniors will have to choose one thank you thank you thank you for your and his concerns I don't think I think the seasons are still on going to my understanding and it's not in cement yet so we appreciate your comments and they will be taken into consideration my next card is a as part of the same school so what that means is we are looking for volunteers and coordinators to help us design find routes for each of the schools help the kids get to school safe play without a car to walking School Bus work since we started specific start location we design and we pick the kids up to walk Gulf Coast in January 11th will be having a workshop looking for volunteers working for your support both to be there if you wishes to evening in the information but to pay tax and also help promote program throughout the entire District looking for parents were looking for faculty looking for community members that can take leadership roles even high school students can participate in this a great way to get service hours sat January 11th I'm going to be at the school district offices I'm in the boardroom from 6 to 8 will be sending out some promotional materials this week before school what soap to help me spread the word and then secondly on a different topic when I thank the entire board up and superintendent's office for the transpro Berkeley it was just launched I went to a parent Workshop a week ago maybe 2 weeks ago over at the middle school and it looks awesome I'm so excited to be able to start it incorporate always planning to our family and having ongoing discussions and adding and subtracting and having guidelines I'd never even heard of this program for the works published really helpful and it's a really fantastic it that's been into our future and I just wanted to ask a parent that thank you for that investment Jim did you say it was January 11th can you work that with you on that Wednesday which event the Appalachian State District so maybe we'll talk about okay thank you for that not literally and one of the age of all it does it Jerry or Janet  okay no thank you message I like to follow up on what Snyder had to say about the calendar for men because I've advocated right here in front of the school board that my particular and impersonal position is that the school year needed to start earlier that the first semester at the high school needed to end prior to the winter break that the AP exams in the exam later in May needed consideration for school calendar from that perspective I still believe that students who are under the pressure of coming back but you never I never understood why you would come back after two week break have two more weeks of academic rigor and then step right into a fight exam. After end up at and what's the discussion that I for year after year is that summer has an issue because Dunes have a tendency to lose some of that great knowledge that they were able to achieve during the school year but now you take two weeks off and you ask him back that's not a vacation young people and I've discussed here about times at the day should start and brakes and kids getting a number of hours of sleep and rest in those some things I think that's an important break for them so my suggestion continues to be start the school year earlier and August not August 28th I think add to calendar proposals that I saw was the 14th or so I think that's absolutely important I don't think the weather should be an issue because we the hottest raised in the fall in October this year so you're not avoided that and maybe that will change but I think academically from my perspective having vet the classroom any number of years 30 some odd years that those young and having seniors for most of that entire time that their benefit was that you could take the time off and I'm other teachers have the opportunity and generally some of them do give a notorious Islands or Magics that are to be completed and turned in after the break and yet teachers get a break many of them don't do a whole lot during that two-week time take it as a mental health time they go on vacation and yet the students have those assignments that are due so please consider that very carefully I understand it's negotiated item and but I do believe what Rachel had to say is true and it's it's been an issue at least in the special studies department when I was when do we get our side and yes there are there are leaders for the certificate and classified staff but I also need to go down to the teachers who are there in the room every day for the tire school year and find out exactly but they had to say and why think that's important not only the leaders not only the one or two people that serve on that like a community Advisory board that goes and gets reports from the company and what Drilling and fracking if that's the case is going by the Inglewood oil field and this is the first time I felt like I should report be is everything else it's been really uneventful there's no drilling it's not phenomic Lee feasible there's no fracking they're getting Barrel oil but not through drilling stove but in 2016 it turns out that there's been enough subside in so this means the Earth has dropped it's subsided right enough that the county and route girl agencies are going to investigate and what their hypothesizing is it this is primarily related to the drought cuz the fluid underneath or Surface level Earth is just depleted to such an extent that the is napping and I just thought was important to share because water is life and we're not conserving enough and could could nerve more and so here's another reason because the Earth is moving okay so I'm more positive thing I saw a walking nightmare buy a TPA on the high school and I was fortunate enough to be able to see it because they had to postpone for a rain date and I would not been able to see it if it weren't for the rain date so I was lucky and will be very pleased both my kids came with me I have to drag them skip kicking and screaming and they were just totally enraptured and it was really cool Innovative I was very impressed it did A Dance version of the holiday movie Nightmare Before Christmas which is like Halloween and Christmas together learned a lot that day was fantastic then I will just end with it for the team is going to talk about this is what we all went to San Francisco together to State School Board conference this year and it was fabulous if only because we all take know each other better and spend time together and I really appreciate that if we're getting stronger every year as we do that more and spend more time with each other night happy to be able to say it it's on louder what else fellow board members Robbins I join doctor Arnold at the illuminate dance event at Google Butch was raising and I was really personally excited to see that with the exception of one male dancers all female dancers High School an all-female call girl coders and so illuminated program really is about a purging and advocating for girls interest Munich what is involved in coding and most populous the one other take where I had from that was there was a panel of speakers and students were allowed endoscope they're not just Culver City or lied to come up and out questions or comments and I repeated theme that came up from several other students different districts was how do I get this in my school how do I get how do I learn how to code how do I do this and something for us it gave us a moment of real gratitude undertale we have this in our district is nothing working to find their students clearly in other districts Riverside Pasadena even were like we don't have this so how do I do it on my phone just say that we should we be grateful for this cuz we have it here it is the season of winter concerts recorders include and I'm trying to go to the night as possible and then I will have to say that save the date for January 11th also save this date for the state of the district make this is the first one we've done private school districts that will be a pretty nice event that it's going to be through co-host with the iPhone please go get your tickets will be at the Courtyard Marriott and the tickets are $30 and you can get them on the adoptions website thank you in okay I was in San Francisco too it was a great opportunity for us to Bond as a board the contents of the meeting was is okay not bad but could have been better so this has been the week of for our school district and myself the Google experience was amazing it was just amazing so wonderful to see our students up there dancing and these if you have to see the video you got to go on our website to see it cuz it is it is an amazing thing to watch the program the lights to go on and off of these suits and our girl coded it and then art student dancers dance to it and it was really a beautiful thing with the hour of at every level in every school and I had the pleasure being able to judge robotics competition at the middle school there were Freeport mcmorran paid for very large number of robotics kits of the different kinds of kids to teach robotics programming and how to how did the robot and so forth at a stepwise process if I'd of the three-week long Cooper said they paid for left it with us so all of that equipment is is ours to keep I got to watch students built these awesome little robots and compete with them and it was fun I also had video with that so there was just a ton of tech computer to be able to report on I've also to a number of concerts I am herpin deck the halls for close to 10 times now okay that's great so I I will say the what a couple to the really touching Parts we're hearing little kindergarteners and 1st graders singing the middle school high school or amazing musicians that are high school just amazing musicians and singers and then I don't know how many people know this but our chamber singers went to the Culver City Woman's Club luncheon on Monday and sang for that and those ladies were rest of it they were just kept saying I can't believe they are students are also sharing their gifts not just football performances with other community members that are up there and that is all I have I don't have much because attending concerts I've been  persuading certain seniors to get their college applications. That has been my life since before Thanksgiving but I'm happy to announce that with that 15 of them done we're done  goodness I did want to mention the CSP conference we do annually and the sure I went to the dick before they were pre-conference it's Symposium I found that to be quite useful actually Stowe  there are parts of it that you know a lot of things there that we should perhaps be the presenters rather than an in the audience because I think we have a lot to offer here and should we should probably work on that for next year in terms of our attendance and our participation for us to be more of presenters than simply absorbing think that we've heard several times or that we're already doing I think we have a lot of good stuff here doing part have to say that we don't always have new things to learn but I think we have took me a lot to offer  let's see  I think we can now move long to just take a brief recess okay I know okay we're going to come in here move boxes long
