today so we are focusing on America recycles day so each year on November 15th the international event and it's a time to educate Americans to recycle more and not just on one day but every day and so this National initiative to keep America beautiful is dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the US so pretty much we have this day and we have a birthday those are them two big events where we have a whole week of so this is our first time focusing on America recycles day maybe some of you have as anyone done anything for this particular day or event this is the first I've heard of it well you know never it's never too late and so what the idea that we had with Caroline is that you know America let's see November 15th falls on a Monday and so you know you could in your respective schools do something just that day but we thought it would be an occasion to do the whole week kind of sets itself up like that and I've talked to Caitlin from the high school and I've talked to so Caitlin is that yes Casas VSC and Mia Cassidy is busy our club end and also Dalena and I've talked to a few of the students at the high school to what we'd like to do is set up students at the the trash station so that they can help students separate the trash now there's a couple things happening firstly is that you know we've been it's been what 2 years we've been talking about improving our waste set up with liners believe it or not it is a difficult project to put in place but we have approval and we are going to do it and the district is going to send out memo to everyone the heads of the different prints principles and custodians and all that so that they can have inspection simultaneously we are switching the school district on all green cleaning products which are certified and so we have a list from Hilliard and that includes the lip liners and then there's some challenges because they don't have all the liners cuz what we're doing is black trash bags blue recycling bags and the transparent ones for Organics of course every several has a different set up and and you know receptacle size and there's some challenges on the custodian side but no matter what we're going forward with it and it's happening and so I asked them to have the three Liners in place the district will pay for the liners for all the schools which is good news hello. then thank you for joining us do you want to say hi and introduce yourself real quick sure hey everybody sorry sorry is a couple of minutes late so I'm I work at the Culver City High School and direct our workability program in so I'm in the special education departments and on the lookout to have my students included in any any type of work experience opportunities in so I'm just I'm happy to be here listening in and participating and we're looking forward to jump in any way we can so it really happy to be here but we haven't talked about our collaborate and yet done so we'll get to that in a second so anyway hoping that foreign time for America recycles day we have the three Liners in place because that's going to help everyone and then we can educate on that for the students for the custodian also we're working simultaneously in the background with the city making sure all of the schools have the dumpsters and it turns out you know why they said they were all there they're not like we walked the high school with Caroline and they're all Dino all over the place that we're fixing some things we also did a walk-through of the cafeteria which is in charge of the food for all other of all of our schools and so we got a chance to see what they make and how they met how they throw it out with set-up and so we move things around right then and there and we're going to buy new receptacles I think also for summer you asked for some containers as well so you know where it's a process so we're working on it actively and so I'm here just to set up this platform what Sofer on our end what we thought about doing is having students be at the stations weigh stations to help the students even if the liners aren't there I think you know people they're still signage and different colored you know cans and things like that so I think we can still move forward on that we also saw with Dan at work ability he's got students with disabilities that are able to help us actually maybe throughout the year make sure that all the bins cuz the successive program is only if the three bins are altogether or at least the two in the classroom if there's one you know recycling bin on the other side of the of the room then we know that trash is going to go not recyclable and then I suppose we'll go in that other trash can so we really have to be consistent about keeping things together so you know while you're out there in your school's if you see that that already that is not in place then you know that's let's figure that out together on how we can do that I know that I did a walk-through and I noticed how Denver into the places in the rooms but there was stuff and some place some rooms just only have the blue bin and then all the trash was in there or bottles were in black ones and there's like they're separate so I don't know if that was what you were talking about was just set up again it is a night I talked to Hilliard who in charge of the bins and custodian custodian training and they were saying you know ideally the bins is the two bins blue and black would be near the whole way that should you know the entrance to the classroom and that's on the hallway side so that the custodians when they're going through they don't have to walk across the the classroom however then you have the teacher's desk on the other and they don't want to walk to you know that area to drop off the recyclables and they only have trash at their desk so it's it's it's his a problem I think if we educate more people might unite least walk over and do things we're going to do our best to keep a system in place and then you know that and then life happens so but as for the workability students they'll be helping us at the high school throughout the year make sure that our three bins cuz they're a lot near the cafeteria but they're a lot around the campus and I think if you have green ambassadors or students that could be a helping to make sure that custodians are keeping things together you know we're hopefully going to have training a lot of training for the custodians as well they're really essential in this process so anyways so other than having students at the trash stations I am opening up this floor to talk about what what we could do together for America recycles day here you're kind of my team hear a rainstorm just jump in and say I need to talk to her principal about this but we've been told us volunteers we cannot come on campus I don't know if lightened up a little since the school year started that I heard my partner and I talked about maybe video about recycling composting whatever and so the teachers could share that with students whether or not is a different story but at least that educate could make it to the kids saying the way to get to the students without I'm at the mall and how would you how would you show the video would would it be the teachers or what time how would you do that I think so when we try to do things like this probably something on YouTube to you but the thing is we we always have a hard time to make sure that the teacher actually do it or you know can we going to let you know send links and things but we never know if it's actually happening so if you and Alice that you know at least a few classes have done that's great it would be beneficial if our principal sent the link out and encourage teachers himself which I pretty sure he would do so there's somebody outside okay Sandra humor at riding up with Caitlin you said you were going to make a video editors that are kind of like sound Reed and Caroline but frisbee and they are in the works of kind of creating a video to be shown in our home rooms for recycling week so I know at the high school we are planning until I can make this into a week I know doctor be talked about possibly doing something even bigger in April as well for Earth week but some ideas I had were like to have that video shown and then a big one would be having a campus clean up like on a Saturday or making it like a canoe and then possibly having one maybe once every other month once a month whatever is like allowed for our school and then we have a lot of in sustainability like clubs on campus so during lunch having one Club each day kind of come out show their purpose and do like a little education thing for students to come and interact but that's awesome oh my goodness how many things you're doing I think it would be amazing to have your video all the junior high or elementary schools I would think they would be looking they're looking up to high school like I'll be able to show that at the elementary schools MCC awesome cuz if you guys doing you're saying and I don't know if other work any mom or dad I have a suggestion for the elementary school and my daughter really enjoyed anytime they have like a Spirit Week 2 playing where every day someone will article of clothing that specifies one specific thing like could we get in touch with the student council's at the elementary schools because they are in charge of those times like Spirit day and I think that would really get excited because they be wearing green on Monday and then the next day maybe I don't know just something to get them in the mindframe the group mine thing we have a theme every day of the week and we always have all sorts of things happen and I don't know how each school ends up using that but if you think it would be good for your Elementary for the elementary schools I I love that brown one do you think using that calendar that we use for earthfest weaker that you've done for your school specifically it could be fun to especially cuz we've been trying to put a officer on our student council represent those views but this year unless I missed it somehow I like that idea is certainly worth looking into is good because people don't remember stuff so 6 which is the trash and garden parents can actually go in is that day so that would be an opportunity to maybe have a little display or something doing people sign in this is coming up like that coming up to could I give you the post if you could do cuz you know I still have the posters the recycling posters for school so I'm giving it away for the high school in summer you're goddamn right I'm still I still have the one for Leigh Noel Rankin and it would be great that I can give it to you guys before this recycling week cuz it makes sense that we have a few posters and and I'm not sure how meet you guys and I can go one day and drop it to your door or I can just go to the high school and you guys come but it's just I don't know how to get it to you and also I know that most of you cannot go on campus but if you're saying you are allowed on that day and maybe you know it's not allowed to stand posters for for the small school so I think you could you can do it that same day right maybe you guys can talk offline how to separated it's good though cuz we have them printed by The District's so run when I've asked this question specifically to Robert's the last time we had a meeting at like 10 days ago and he said it's going to be okay ansco so I would double check now things have changed so that's one one thing to look into and I know that Veronica at El Rincon de it have started green ambassadors program actively and I offered to do a green Ambassador his subcommittee but she said her school is doing it but if in case you need support I'm happy to get you guys together if you need so you know in person or resume what did she ask what did she say Carolina on lunch I don't know but she's got a bunch of its full swing right now for this so you can reach out to her somehow and the other thing I wanted to do and I don't think we could do it right cuz it's only in two weeks but I am definitely doing it I wanted to do it last year and we missed our opportunity but is to throw the trash on the floor on Earth Day or on the you know if if in the elementary schools you could do that with the kids can just put their trash like you know the the chip bags in one place in the milk in this and they have an awareness of what they're actually in a disposing I know then you'd have to have parent volunteers to pick it up cuz your custodians aren't going to do it but if you could get buy-in from your I got by in from the high school ask her to do that last year so we're doing it next to 4 for sure I think we just don't have a lot of time to organize it district-wide but how cool would it be for us to for 1 lunch time to throw everything in a pile and and be aware of what where disposing of and you know and have a good conversation that's that's the thing I yeah so I think you just tell me all the kids pretend you're at home just that's that's that's what happened that all right right now and I'm hearing there's a set of activities right as a week if you could imagine the video when you can tell us more if there's a specific video supporting in class this is how we do it in our classroom you'll one day is devoted to the Cheerio whatever that like a separation something. Cleanup day when I saw the invite one of the questions that I had it since this potentially for another day of the week is on I remember this whole thing around like I got a refrigerator it's what your awesome about what goes on what you know and the idea same people will one day is your stuff that you can bring home your son how to have practice is at your house the city of Culver City and four people in La can figure out this you know you know anything around what not to bring to school like you bring less disposable things to school right we have water fountain can we use those can I use a water bottle instead of everyday getting a plastic bottle did I do I didn't set you off I was just asking if she had any City resources like you could put in kid bag to take home like those refrigerator magnets for used to have them I've never requested them partly because half of the time I've been here we've been at home but I could ask that the city in terms of to print posters for there are posters their City posters for our schools and they said no so they won't even support it says not Wayside doubt that they would give us anything however they do have the recycle coach app from the city and I really think we could help promote that during this week where and that could get kids in those kids maybe you're the elementary schools they're too small hopefully they don't have phones yet but they can download it on your phone and then kind of have fun with it and see where things go yeah go ahead run when you guys will open I know you've been talking too much and having kids go home and teach their parents stuff and generational I did a project in grad school and one of the best ways to do that is to actually teach the kids how to do yesterday and they will bring it home from the research that I did the best way to teach kids in in cafeteria settings our who is our ASB president Caitlin Caitlin mentioned a video so you definitely that's just like the first step is direct instruction. dust doesn't come naturally to kids who have to teach them how to do it and making it easy for them so put in the bins in a way where it when they're walking up there not having his brother Trey away first in like juggle stop to think about the way they're heading towards our trash cans and what they need to throw away and also like a direct a direct reward system like you did it right the job here's a sticker or here's whatever ticket your school is giving a you know whatever Rewards program your school is having so like somehow giving them even just positive thing. Verbally but some sort of reward after they do it right so they know they know that they've done it it really helps because I spent a lot of time sorting trash at our school cafeteria is appropriate signage for a kid and what that kind of looks like is the actual thing that they're supposed to I think so none of the gist Yummy's to be really streamlined I think if we put in a policy where kids that bring their own lunch needs to pack it up and bring it home cuz I like that the only thing we're sorting is stuff that comes from the cat so we know ahead of time what needs to go where and we put that exact thing up on the poster and up on the signage so it's like this is exactly the package you got in that little muffin it goes in the and here it is on the poster and that's where it goes and whoever is there at the high school is saying that's where it go and then they put it in there and then you like a good job. And then just doing that regularly another thing I'm up in the research is that it does require active management you can't just teach them once you know it has to be a reoccurring thing so that's kind of what showing up in the science of Behavioral Science when it comes to school school I'm starting yeah that's a really good points go ahead to scan all together and then you say take it to the classroom on Tuesday and in our classroom we do what we did on Monday but now we do it in our classroom we have two events in our classroom and then you tell people take it home do you have three bins at home give a place for composting at Home Depot place you know it's like repeating you know. That you operate in your cafeteria your home you know can I jump in on this stuff we did a lot of this stuff when we start our year the first class we make posters and we blue chip shop in the kids take them all to their classrooms and then we hang some in the in normal times on tears in this is not a fun job come to school for the first couple weeks of school and literally stand by the trash cans and stopped practice going through and even do a it's the repetitive is necessary the repetition of necessary even doing that yes some kids who were just like I will do it but I like when it's summer said about the rewards because I also run the walking School best program for Lynn how and the reason why we are so successful is because we have a lottery in the kids get prizes we're doing what like what so 3 kids every Friday old and software program if we can get it and then those kids at the really big deal for elementary kids to get to do this I can tell you that our first walking school day we just started in October we have 55 kids walk to school with our program the first day then the kids found out they could win prizes and they get their number called over the loudspeaker we had 88 kid the next week that is the most we've ever had walked to school so what is the price for a report what are the some of the stuff I will say some of the good stuff the dollar section at Target but I'll take people's party favors that are left over from a birthday party I use my kids old toys as long as they're nice and new looking for free from an airplane stuff like that. I just throw in that the constitution in there that nobody take that yet but you know we were Dave and Busters for a school fundraiser kids were in these stupid things from the machine did not want them so I took them and put them in the back I never try to buy the prizes I just knew better than like but free lunches now because you don't want to discriminate but if a kid can show that they've either gone through and carefully composted or dispose of their trash properly or brought their lunch box to show that they did not receive perhaps there's some sort of Lottery system where kids can get a ticket for jumping and when something becomes an experience and not a piece of junk I will say the raffle tickets for the lottery for the walk to school thing is really what goes kids doing it and dragging your parents to have them do it it's that's a good idea because City had some coloring books or something is an octopus a recycling character and they also had some other character they were promoting that can come to the elementary schools and and make it an event I don't know if we have time to get in contact with them but I see we had talked with Dan from work ability to see if some of his students could come help in the elementary schools at the station's I don't know when it be nice to know you know how many stations do you have in and what year you each of you in that area I love all these ideas on I see Caitlin you another sure I just had a quick question because I didn't have like when I was at Farragut I'm so is this approach goes and teaches students like at their classrooms or is it like an after-school program usually I do believe that like once you hit high school it's really hard to start implementing these things into students Minds like it needs to start Young when I was in elementary school we always had this lady who would come and see just like Healthy Living so like I know everything about fats and carbohydrates and protein because she came like four or five times a year to my classroom and if there's a way for us to for sustainability and for making it a program that's throughout the elementary schools. Could be like drastic to like the Improvement of mine sets free real quick is a program that started at 1 how it used to be called Green seats and then I took it over about four years ago have a application process make sure kids are actually interested sorry to kids for me to classroom get to come we had to group the younger kid group in an older kid group and then they get to meet once a month and have a special at Hands-On lesson environmental saying those kids are Masters they would go back to their classroom and then and so ideally Tyson but there are two or three kids as the leaders yeah Veronica's do not in El Rincon this year yeah and a lesson plans which we're going to looking for this year but they have amazing lesson plans and actually the amazing lesson plans that you had was what made me feel like I could just do it because you know you just feel like this is so hard when starting from scratch but you know one of the things that we're doing it again this year I'm really excited we have new people like more people that have been interested in joining and we are going to do literally what Brian just said soon supplements with the rolling it on it in the in the cafeteria I'm sorry I was a little late so I'm not I'll get filled in on exactly what this program that you're that you're proposing that we'll figure out a way combine it with what we're already doing one of my interest in doing the grand master program is I really want to be a part of yeah maybe not right now cuz this little guy but soon helping to formalize or to extend it into something that is easier to four other schools to to pick up and start to the point of do this guy maybe I'll go to El Marino and I'll start if there is some point but I want it to not feel like it's his really daunting thing that is so hard to start cuz it is a challenge to start it but then people get excited and you like we just have all these new parents that are excited to join because they've been in quarantine and there's no other opportunities to volunteer and they're getting excited and so it's it's a great program that Bronwyn and others have been running and I wish I could be disseminated more broadly in time to get the schools on board with this but today we're right now because we have only a few minutes meeting is where we're trying to collaborate so that we have we focus on America recycles day and make it a week of events in the different schools and just to let you know see how old it inspire you and how we can support you together already come up with different ideas on Jeff you've got your hand if there's a photos of those items from the cab I think someone mentioned that but like yeah whatever buttons to get back I recycle no buttons on the backpacks and school near PTA and find out that they can add a line item in our budget for inability to be amazing and I have several thousand I would imagine I hopefully I don't know what about doing some things for sustainability that's great so I don't know the cost of the big buns would be really cool and just last things they were who's talking about the Greg at the kids mentioned the different days like for the week so campus and that like Monday Tuesday recycling in the classroom and I'm like Wednesday at home and then Thursday next Thursday out in about like if you're out in a restaurant in the community or something but everyday is brought into Mike more butter and then Friday is just like Sierra Recycling yeah yeah so I like that cuz it gives it a theme in a bills on the table for really cool I think that's a great idea to do like a week like we did for we can put the different all the great ideas that we've had a I know. I hope I know that I know that everything but we have a few ideas now I think about it and that's yeah but what I think is that it's going to be maybe a little different for the elementary schools and then I'm not sure for the Middle School are we going to have people from the high school going to the Middle School to show them or how is it going to happen I don't know if we have enough people though middle school has an SB and we used to do it in Middle School ASB where we had like we would switch off so half the class sorting and then the other half of the Excel stop at school so we can ask me spielmann at the middle school of her students would be interested in doing that do you have a I can get one I can get one if you can email them something great so maybe all of us that are here will get an email going in and share some of the ideas and what we can weather for what we talked about and then if anyone wants to work with work ability to have some of their students come help you with the Sorting station we're going to go and train them ahead of time so that they can go in the schools and help so please feel free to reach out to Dan directly and you have any other any other things I don't know how many students be available to do this do you know in the class and in the nice thing is they may be able to help during the day without you know where I am about missing class cuz part of their part of their program in education is no work based in community-based instruct I think what's the nicest just their availability and there's adults within the classroom to kind of help keep things organized and commute as well communicate as well so yeah I think it's as there's eight students in the class and we're going to have to you know we're going to go and meet him next week and will hopefully have a better idea of what's going to be the most appropriate I think and how they can how they can contribute but I know that they're excited to participate so fine or anything or is it okay no I just went and actually intend to speak to that on so yeah we again are green ambassador program at El Rincon is dr. Hodges made an exception to the parent cell vaccinated and cleared volunteers to come in and I think that's where the only program she's allowing that with but it is absolutely the case that all the principles are saying no outside visitors whatsoever in the schools and stuff kind of get around that somehow even if it's a c c u s d student but it sounds like parents I think that's what I was thinking if it's another ccusd student allowed to go on other schools so each principal yes I would check with you how it's going to go down like I said that you missed that drunk I talked to Robert Quinn who's in charge of all this and he said that it's going to go back to being open again so I will check with your principles cuz he's there he's giving me information what do you what do you mean by soon well it was in the process of I don't know so you are in fact you're the principals will know cuz they are probably asking every day check in again no yeah okay well any other last-minute ideas or thoughts I just had a question for for Caitlin other V roasted you are recommending are they already made and something that we could see sorry I have not made them yet it would be videos that are as we students make so it's like we would be in them and I would see it as soon as I can get them to you all would probably be like the week before just because we are very busy and our environmental students are working on the green New Deal that were on and so I would say after this week we're going to start working on recycling week we will I will get them to you all as soon as I can and yeah we can have it we can get them back up and I'll just in case video from YouTube I guess she has videos we have someone posted in the chat box there's a link to our sustainability page there's a video section where you'll see all of our meetings but under that their videos that were done by Farragut and other school so check those out if you can recycle for your schools and that'll be great about so America recycles day is Monday November 15th the ideas to go all the way fun the whole idea we make it a week all the way through the 19th and that's why we're trying to get you excited about putting something together in your schools great all right for those of us who want to follow War information where is there like an email or document or something we're going to maybe send out an email to the artistic today cuz then we'll all be in the loop together at is that okay okay you didn't we didn't know it was you but hello option to change my name I can have money tonight.
