good evening it is now 6:06 and I am now calling this uh regular meeting Open Session to order all trustees are present and let's get started with the flag salute do we have a volunteer to we do we have Yasmine Lopez who's going to lead us in the pledge this evening thank you Miss Lopez met everybody please stand and place your right hand over your heart I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands 1 nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all very much Mr King mind reading the land acknowledgement we acknowledge our presence on the traditional ancestral and unseated territory of the kich and tongva people who are the original caretakers of this land thank you so much moving on to 3.4 Public Announcement of actions taken by the board in closed session in closed session this evening the Culver City Unified School District Board of Education voted to appoint Dr Miguel Perez as principle of el Marino dual Language School effective May 1st 2026 this action was approved by a unanimous vote adoption of agenda 5.1 uh Dr Jimenez yes uh thank you board president Laredo members of the board cabinet staff and community so this evening we do have some deletions and corrections to make and I would just like to uh let the public know we have experienced some issues with our diligent platform so there are times where we make Corrections and something gets corrected but then it reverts back so there's some items that I'm going to read out that reflects that but we want to make sure that the agenda today reflect the most latest agenda so for uh deletions this evening we are going to delete agenda item 9.3 which is an update on the district initiated parcel tax the item will be brought back at a future board for Corrections 11.5 there is a typo in the word governing it should be spelled g o v e r n i n g in the attachment 16.15 please correct the attached form to read as zero number of facilities complaints resolved all other items on the form is correct for item 16.18 Amendment number 1 to Eda contract please correct by adding the fiscal amount to read not to exceed 6,000 as listed in the attached contract for the remainder of the year and the funding source to reach general fund all of their items are correct thank you I will move the agenda with those Corrections all those in favor I I I thank you very much uh Awards of recognitions and presentations Point 1 2026 Ovid speech contestant recognitions uh Dr Hinrich thank you board president we would like to have um Yasmine Lopez Vanessa Ramirez and Royal Lewis come up to the podium to join us the USD is proud to recognize the top 3 winners of the Culver City High School AIT speech contest for the 2526 school year and students being honor are being honored for their achievement communication skills and commitment to academic excellence and Miss linky of avid is going to speak this evening thank you hi there my name is Katherine Lenny I have the honor of being the the Avid counselor cover City High School today we're recognizing 3 wonderful students who competed in a very competitive um speech competition that we annually hold at Culver City High School uh we find a lot of intention in preparing our first generation and students to represented in college in preparation in college with writing public speaking skills so our students not only prepared a speech um practice it among their class competed with among 6 other finalists um and so we just want to recognize their perseverance that's what their essays were about were very proud of all of you um and that you know with this motivation from not 1 prep for college that's what the essay prompt was about it's always in college uh personal statement essay prompt and uh with scholarships that come with it we had um Culver City Education Foundation uh with the big scholarship for our 3 students um and we also had PTSA donate snacks we had sento Italian Market donate our dinners that evening including extra scholarships but really the recognition here is uh with Yasmine Lopez Vanessa Ramirez and Royal Lewis uh thank you for being a part of avid thank you to our board members for the support our district office um just well done guys okay hey moving on to public recognition 7.2 members of the audience items not on the agenda this is a time when members of the audience May address the board on matters not listed on the agenda how many speakers do we have right now looks like we have 8 in person um I see 1 hand raised online okay so that's 9 so 9 uh we can go for um 2 and a half minutes and we are now closing public comment for items not listed on the agenda um so I'll read the first 3 people uh so the the number 2 and number 3 you can get ready here um so first 1 is Andrew Futo then we have I think it's May March 10 then roshini magia um Andrew if you'd like to speak first approach the podium I think it's 2 minutes 30 seconds yeah 2:30 not 2:50 good evening uh board my name is Andrew firudo I am a parent with uh 3 children here at Coe City Schools uh my 2 daughters go to lab Iona Elementary uh my son just entered sixth grade this year at the of City Middle School uh to my left is Jason Grossman I wanted to introduce myself and Mr Grossman as 2 of the 3 successor trustees to the Goodyear Trust uh I'm here basically to speak uh on behalf of the trust to uh cover 2 or 3 issues uh in my allotted time uh the purpose of me speaking today is to introduce ourselves to the board uh as the trust is proceeding to prepare a donation of a little over a million dollars to uh renovate the team room exists locker room uh on the brick building near harder Avenue and right now looks like about 250,000 dollars has been allocated for new lockers uh the lock ERS that are currently in there are over 25 30 years old uh in bad condition uh the team room itself the locker room itself will be fully refreshed and renovated with new flooring uh cleaned up walls we also took the trouble to uh get a uh survey done for uh the uh asbestos possibility in that building and the report came back clean so we are ready to proceed on that basis I know I have CCD the board members all the information that I'm not going to go over now uh and I spoke to uh Santo achieved just before this meeting as far as the status of getting the approval for this donation uh moving forward to come before the board hopefully by the April 28th meeting uh Mr Grossman here is also a successor trustee along with Adams who is the athletic director and in charge of the booster club the last thing I want to mention is the fact that the uh trust has made this request uh back in December of 2025 and we finally got a response uh recently due to the change in your gift policy uh at the last meeting thank you Mr peruto chemistry Gman speak now um he is not next in line but I we do have him in in the list so if you want to just uh wait a minute um we'll go through these in order that we received them okay then we'll come back up at that time okay sounds good thank you um okay Miss Chen good evening excuse me my name is murmur Chen I'm here to address the um smartphone policy and thank you for including an update on the cell Committee in the recent district-wide email first of all uh clear communication like that really matters and we appreciate the effort to keep families informed I'm here tonight both as a parent of 2 students at La bayona and as a teacher at Paul rovert Middle School at Paul rovert we've had a phone free policy in place for over a decade I've seen firsthand how it supports student Focus helps create a calmer more connected campus environment we've done it without yondr pouches or phone lockers and with lots of Staff dedication to changing the school culture to a phone free environment it works and it is sustainable back in November 2024 many of us asked for a working group to focus specifically on implementation and now about 18 months later implementation still seems to be the biggest unanswered question if this policy is going into effect next school year families and teachers need time to prepare announcing major changes in July for an August roll out doesn't give anyone the runway they need the district can really lead here by was seeing parent education sessions creating space for for questions and engaging teachers in similar conversations about what this will look like in classrooms many of us have already gathered resources sample communication s data even slide Decks that could serve as a starting point we're eager to share them and partner with you we don't need to start from scratch but we do need to start now and as we think about phones I hope we begin to look look ahead at broader edtech issues at my school I've seen how platforms like YouTube and constant iPad and Chromebook use can impact attention and learning in ways we're only beginning to understand this feels like a natural step next step in the conversation as both a teacher and a parent I'm encouraged by the direction we're heading I truly believe that we can do this thoughtfully and successfully together thank you for your time and your partnership okay thank you um the next 3 that I have an order uh Russia magia then Angie Graves then Francis roseno uh go ahead hi um I'm originally magia I have have a student at lab bayona and now a student is a sixth grader at the middle school I'm not only a parent in this District but also a secondary English teacher of 16 years and the current English department chair at Sam oh hi I also come from a family of educators I'm speaking to you from both personal and professional experience my concern is not about technology itself technology can absolutely support learning when used intentionally my concern is the over Reliance on screen-based platforms as the primary mode of instruction and assessment when I look at student work and grade books I see a heavy use of platforms like a hoot way ground and edpuzzle these tools tend to assess recall and surface level understanding they do not consistently measure critical thinking writing analysis or true Mastery of any skills that is not rigorous instruction as Educators we know that real learning requires depth it requires students to read closely think critically rights struggle productively and engage with ideas in meaningful ways over relying clients on these platforms does not meet the needs of all Learners and does not prepare students for the demands of high school and Beyond I'm deeply concerned about the lack of access to physical texts in the classroom research continues to show that reading in print improves comprehension focus and retention a balanced approach matters this is not just a parent concern this is a professional concern this is about instructional quality our students deserve classrooms that prioritize depth over convenience quality over quantity and learn running over compliance I urge the district to take a closer look at instructional practices expectations around technology use and how we're ensuring rigor in meaningful uh learning for all students thank you okay thank you next 1 I have is Angie Graves good evening everyone um I am a parent of a fifth grader at La bayona and a seventh grader at Culver City Middle School um I joined this movement when my son started at CCMS uh for sixth grade now he's almost done with his seventh grade year and we still have not seen a policy change what we have seen are more and more examples of why phone free schools are necessary I do feel encouraged right now by a general sense of agreement on the topic um it seems like members of the School Board District staff School admin at CCMS and at lab Iona are all in support of phone preschools for the most part um the topic is everywhere in the news there is a national movement of parents and Educators working to create a sea change uh when it comes to smartphones and technology in schools so I am feeling hopeful but ccusd is far behind um our neighbors and the question remains how can we Implement a phone preschool policy with such Limited resources especially at this point in time in our district and I believe the answer is communication communication communication communication soon and often in our fifth grade Community right now as we're having conversations with my daughter's uh friend's parents families are looking ahead to middle school they're touring they're asking questions about safety and the environment their kids are walking into parents are increasingly aware of risks of smartphones and most to know that the surrounding middle schools are already phone free more and more families are also pushing uh to limit edtech use starting at younger ages at a time when enrollment is directly tied to that budget this really matters families are attending tours at multiple schools and making decisions right now it's imperative that we communicate clearly and soon about upcoming phone policy changes and in particular to fifth grade families going into Middle School um and we know good communication looks like it's consistent it's repeated shared across multiple stakeholder groups in a variety of formats in multiple languages emails websites in-person meetings posters Flyers more it takes so much to communicate as we know to all of these wonderful full cover City families um if this change is coming in a few months we need time as murmur was talking about we we cannot wait until the summer um I just want to thank you for listening and caring about the issue please know that there is a large community of parents to work with you and to help support any policy moving forward thank you next 3 people sort of Francis uh Jason Grossman and Serena fish Francisco go ahead thank you my name is Francis Rosenau I'm a parent of a student a fifth grader at lab Iona and an eighth grader at CCMS I want to start by again thanking superintendent Jimenez for communicating in the Clover Pride newsletter about the cell phone committee's progress we learned that the committee has met 4 times and will be continuing its work with the hope of implementing a new policy in July thank you for the update and the continued clear communication a year ago our slow tech group gathered over thousand signatures 26 pages of people who signed calling for a phone free school day across the district recognizing that this would not be easy to implement we asked for a group to problem solve implementation strategies it looks like implement presentation still seems to be the biggest question mark the good news is that since every other school district around us has been doing this for over a year and a half we don't have to start from scratch again Culver City Middle School is the only Middle School on the west side that does not have a phone free day we can learn from them and put something in place that will be enforced fifth grade families are making decisions now and many are planning to buy their phones for their Rising sixth graders since the official line is that children need them at the middle school I have been in the middle school office as I was waiting um in the lobby and when a parent came in to drop something off the office staff asked the parent your kid has a phone right oh okay good this is exactly the opposite of the message and tone we want to send about phones during the school day people keep asking me why phones are still allowed at school and why action hasn't been taken parents send me the pig of their child's screen usage during the school day and how many hours of YouTube they consume each and every day what's going on they asked me so I pass on those questions to you we welcome further partnership Communications and strategies we also welcome Miss Lane as principal Middle School coming in during the school year is cannot be easy I'm sure and we look forward to working together I know we can do this I it is not insurmountable I honestly if I'm honest with you I have had my doubts in the past and have looked outside ccusd for other options for my family and my Rising sixth grader but today I believe the obstacles that face us are not insurmountable and are definitely worth it for our schools and for our students thank you all right Jason Grossman can we pause for a second thank you I'm sorry okay thank you all very much Jason Grossman uh can you give me can you give me just a second please proceed thank you thank you so Jason Groome part of the Goodyear Trust going to piggy back off of what a Mr Futo said previously but going back to the prior speaker I'm glad that Dr hermene is um took time to respond to the the the pride uh email that was good uh we still have uh yet to receive a response from him regarding our million plus dollar proposal for the for the team room and for the locker room which is disappointing um and that's kind of where I stand in as as a football coach as someone who's part of the school district now K through 12 has been a college football coach um I know what good leadership and effective communication looks like and it just is very unfortunate when someone as generous as coach Goodyear um was wants to put all of his life savings into into building this program up and has put a lot of time and effort into it and he trusts Andrew and I in terms of getting getting a moving the ball forward and to see um kind of the the push back is kind of astonishing uh to me so um the good your trust has done a lot of great things I know we we put away 10,000 a year for scholarships we're 5,000 a year for for coaching stip which is which is great uh and then I also know there was kind of a little push back and I know some misinformation as well um about the about the football locker room that took place and I know that was with the prior uh superintendent um but we were going to pay for that completely completely and the district approved a plan that the trust did not and um we came up with an agreement and we and we are in the payment plans right now which is which is really uh which is I think the best way to to go about it and I'm happy that the our superintendent understood that the buck stopped with him and he needed to make things right and he did so in that way so I would just like to see more effective leadership coming from the top being on board with us uh responding to our emails uh because we're here to benefit the student athletes and that's what my soul and our priorities are as as Culver City guys through and through uh I I really take a a personal interest in seeing this school district and seeing this high school and seeing this football program continue to raise the the level and and accomplish great things and I hope we can raise the standards and expectations to get there uh so we can accomplish things effectively and efficiently and I hope we can also see that accountability needs be had from the top down and when there's no accountability this type of stuff can happen so thank you all very much and looking forward to being in consistent Communications with the all moving forward appreciate it okay we have 2 remaining I have Serena fish and then Lee Hansen Serena if you want to go ahead hi my name is Serena fish and I'm the current vice president of avpa visual art and I've been the student costumes leading designer for abpa theater for the last year and a half I know you heard a lot about this already but I truly believe that we all want the same thing we just need to figure out how to get there but I'm extremely worried about what could happen to avpa if Heather Moses and JD Sergeant are cut I don't think that APA visual art can properly function without Heather Moses the core of the a of the APA art program is that we have classes after school to help my professional artists from West LA College which we get through Heather if we don't have her we risk losing the core of our Program scheduling these courses isn't as simple as just emailing a school and asking them to teach a class just 3 years ago when we got a new art teacher we weren't able to get West LA classes for the first first year of the program which led people into my in my grade to need to take drawing class 3 times as opposed to offering the widest set of skills and that the program promises to teach every year last year the art teacher that we had left and so we had to figure out how to run the program through a collaboration between the current art teacher the student board and Heather Moses thanks to Heather we have our West delay classes this year we had the artwalk we had our first Zen Gallery with villagewell and the program is heading in a really good direction because of Heather without Heather none of the events that I just named would have been able to occur I also think that theater Tech can't function properly without JD on the closing night of Hades town the power went out in the frost backstage I remember that for a moment everyone went quiet before everyone was confused and I watched as people started to panic because none of us knew what to do but JD did JD was able to bring the power back when No 1 else knew what to do and he's the only reason why our technical theater program is able to learn the skills that we need when we work on these shows he teaches students how to properly manage power tools and he taught me what I want to do in my life which is costume design and these are not things that you can just do outside of schools there the same opportunities for theater Tech and we need these opportunities at our school with proper supervision so what happens to the Future classes of abpa art what happens to the Future people who want to do theatric theatrical design what happens to the artists of ccusd I know that No 1 want these positions gone and then it seems hopeless but we need to work as hard as possible to keep the Arts positions that cchs thank you so much okay last in-person comment Lee Hansen hi everybody my name is Lee Margaret Hansen and I am the creative director of avpa CTE theater and I at the last board meeting Jordan Kang asked a really good question he said why specifically are be targeting the Arts programs and is there no other option and I'm here tonight because I wanted to answer Jordan Kang's question honestly Jordan there were multiple different options and solutions available before any more teachers or staff should have been laid off this year because this this isn't our first rodeo we've been here before we've been through recessions and budget cuts back in 2009 after the crash I was a TA at ASU getting my MFA in theater performance and everyone at the University whether they were te adjunct or tenu Professor classified or cert ated staff everyone took Furlow days which is essentially working a day pro bono and yes do Furla days  absolutely but they are temporary like ripping off a Band-Aid also it wasn't just ASU doing Furlow days back in 2009 pretty much every single college and School District was implementing them including get this CC USD so real talk to everybody we are supposed to be a team we are supposed to be a unified school district and that means celebrating our wins together but also weathering the storms together together not at each other's throats not ranking and devaluing fellow teachers employees and programs in a demeaning chart that looks like a caste system creating impossible Sophie's Choice level decisions like choose between mental health and the Arts what's next history versus science so Jordan when you asked this board and cabinet if there was anything they could do and they said that this was the only way that would be like me telling you that there was only 1 star in the sky and you and I both know there are countless stars in the sky thank you okay we have 1 online comment um from Mr Jim Shannon um somebody needs to unmute him I think oh there okay unmute himself great can you all hear me okay yes fantastic uh so thank you and greetings president Laredo and the rest of the school board um my name is Jim sham and I'm your Culver City s school coordinator and I apologize for not being there in person I'm a little under the weather this evening uh I wanted to make sure you and all the families listening are aware that on Wednesday April 2 second in celebration of Earth Day lend the street will be closed to cars from 700 mm to 9:00 a.m. this project through the public works department will provide students a car-free street for a fun and easy commute to school for just 1 morning this is a great time for parents to rethink their commutes school and allow their kids to walk bike or take transit and not just on April 22nd birthday but hopefully going forward as well we encourage students to take advantage of the open streets in the many activities we have planned including a bike skills area a fun zone selfie stations and more we'll also have prices and giveaways for students participating in the various activities we also encourage parents to view the map on the safe route to school website at CC walk and roll.com and plan accordingly um mostly last year went smoothly but for a few areas it got a clogged up if parents just refuse to not not heed the warnings that were out there and continue to drive as close to a lender as possible so we're asking reminding parents the streets east and west of valinda will be blocked at the alleys so parents who need to drive to the schools we plan to drop their kids off along kums or along Huron so for example if you're coming from Sova you can drop your kids off at Harder or here on exit uh via Huron coming off of Overland you can drop your kids off at kums and then exit so you don't have to go all the way to the alleys you certainly can't get to Atlanta anyway for kids that are walking biking or taking Transit your commutes will not change but instead of heading straight to the bike racks please do join us in the street for the many activities and Culver City bus will be operating as normal and a reminder that students ride the bus for free via the go Pass Program and lastly I'd like to add that we are launching a student Mobility Council to allow space for students to have a voice in mobility and traffic conversations throughout the city students will also plan activities participate Wok and Roll the school programming at their schools and maybe do some group rides and group Lots Etc students can sign up at CC wok and roll.com schools and it's uh free we plan to meet month plan to meet at least weekly and we look forward to seeing all the students on participating in conversation thank you for the time okay thank you and that's it for the comments thank you very much we now move to CC USD employee the e-groups Miss Jack now if you could thank you good evening everyone um welcome back those of you who had a little time off on spring break I hope it was rest for those who kept working thanks for keeping the lights on um I have a few things little grab bag of things to talk about this evening um first of all I want to congratulate the Avid speech winners on their job well done again and kids in this District um I want to also compliment and thank the hard work of the cell phone excuse me cell phone committee I am honored to be a part of that group and I am especially grateful for the fact that the group is always mindful of how any changes in policy will affect our staff in terms of um enforcement for lack of a better word so I'm very very encouraged and hopeful that we're going to get to a good place um with that group I also want to congratulate and welcome Miss Lane as our new Middle School principal I had the privilege of speaking with her this morning and I'm very very excited so thank you for being here and thank you for joining us um couple things that are a little more business-oriented first of all I just want to address um agenda item 16 I think 0.14 this is about board compensation I know you are all aware of it um I know this is in response to an assembly bill I know that just by having conversations with some of you all individually um you are thoughtful about this issue I would just like to reiterate that while everybody is being asked to do more with less it would be very very encouraging and really really help the morale of your team if they are the same from our board members um the increase would mean that uh if it was taken in full that you all were making more than a lot of my classified colleagues so not to say that you don't deserve it but I think we would all agree that if we're going to lift all boats we need to lift all boats together so um that's all I have to say on that um last but not least I wanted to bring this up in this space because I know Dr Jimenez has been mindful of this I know it's something um that you all are mindful of but I think this is the place to talk about the fact that we really need to re start a conversation with our colleagues at the city level around parking around the L the complex um I attended a dance concert right before spring break and we were all sitting in the frost excited to see our kids perform and Heather Moses came out and let us know that she had been formed by the city that the neighbors said they were going to start calling about parking on elinda and that people were going to be ticketed find this baffling that is a public Street the people who live there probably most of them bought their houses after that High School had already been built I'm not sure how this relationship has been allowed to continue where the city can tell residents and guests that they cannot Park on public streets so I would ask our board members our super intendant I know we have a city liaison can we start talking about this again I mean this is so baffling to me I can't even really articulate my confusion um I would be more than happy to participate in any those conversations but I do think it's an issue of not only being good neighbors but also access we do have people who have mobility issues I know there is a parking lot but I also think when you are right across the street it's far easier to get into the complex that having to walk down half the block just because residents don't want people parked in front of their homes for 2 hours um so yeah that I would appreciate again that being addressed that's really all I have and then the last thing I want to do is congratulate my siblings at LAUSD for a successful contract negotiation I'm glad they did not have to miss any school so thank you all have a good evening welcome Mr long hi good evening everyone so I also like to welcome our new Middle School principal and I think I'm going to be over on Tuesday um to um go ahead and sit down and chat um first thing I wanted to do day was um to go ahead and give a promotion so ccft is um having a forum for people that in the community are considering running for school board this fall The Forum be on April 30th at Culver City Middle School um we encourage anyone in the community that is considering running for a seat on the school board this November to please visit our website www culvercity teachers.org all the information that you need will be there for who to contact and how to get information about our school board Forum but we want to continue to promote that anyone who is interested in running for office and would like to um get an endorsement from ccft and have the opportunity to meet with both our members and also members of the Association of classified employees who are going to co-host this meeting with us on April 30th as is an opportunity for anyone in the community that would like to run to please go to the website look at the information and then contact us so we can give you the details we will record this forum as well um both for our members but also as a community service to the citizens of Culver City to be able to watch this forum as well um secondly you know we've of course over the last few weeks have talked a lot about um budget and cuts and cuts are never easy um again we have a revenue problem in Culver City um we definitely have a revenue problem here we need to generate more Revenue there's not enough Revenue that comes from the state of California unfortunately for districts like ours I would also encourage you to once again go to our website or any of our social media Facebook Instagram and X to find out ways you can help to raise revenue in Culver City Schools there's some great ways for the community to get involved including this Saturday for the those of you that would like to meet with teachers and fellow community members on the corner of Culver boulevard in Lafayette beginning at 10:00 a.m. so if you're interested please also go to our website www Culver City teachers.org to find out information on how you could raise revenue for Culver City Unified Schools so as I also want to take a moment to congratulate our sibling unions utla and SEIU Local 99 on their hard-fought uh win in La unified and just the sad fact that a District that was sitting on over 5 billion in reserves could you all imagine that having 5 billion in reserves wouldn't that be really nice in reserves and it took them till 3:00 in the morning to finally settle with SEIU 90 9 to avert a strike I am still wearing my red today as many of our members did in support of our 2 sibling unions of course we are related to utla through the American Federation of teachers and SEIU through AFL CIO so just to be congratulations to them um we still need to work on our bargaining proposals and revenue of course increasing that revenue is a big part of it so we look forward to the district on continuing to sit down at the table and at least at this time hammering out some of our contract language and looking at this again very small benefits proposal that we proposed to get our members through at least this um year um as we look forward to finding out ways to generate Revenue um declining enrollment is also another topic that we hear about a lot so um I had the privilege of attending uh mayor Freddy Poo's uh lunch in about oh about 2 weeks ago was that oh yeah right at the start of break and they were talking about housing in Culver City so the mayor had invited me to attend that and there is a lot of housing coming to Culver City so I was kind of texting with Dr Humana I was like what do you want me to ask them here at this forum um so they're looking at about 4,000 units right now in the pipeline here in Culver City the answer they didn't quite give me that I really wanted is do you have a guess of how many families that would be and you know that I you maybe they just I don't know they didn't want to or they couldn't figure that out but I have to think you know there's going to be some families that are coming in with that 4,000 units in Culver City in the next um you know few years so that is something that we I think as a district need to look at is we're looking at space and facilities and things like that that the city of Culver City does have in their pipeline all these units you know a big complex across from La bayona Elementary at the NFL Network um a complex in Fox pills were the old CVS was um they've already broke ground on the um project that the um next to the YMCA at the old church there The jubilo Village project um they're I believe the old gun store next to Lava other planning there so there's quite a few projects that are um you know they're in the pipeline and you know they are changing so um again I would encourage the liaison committee to also kind of work closely um with our city Partners on that and you know what over city is going to look like because that's going to be a big factor of Us coming as well too um finally Lauren had mentioned I did kind of notice at the end on the agenda there is board compensation I know this conversation I've had before and look I think that you know board members I mean you do a lot for a very very small amount um but I also think that in a time right now when we have gone through some layoffs and we have gone through um these austerity me measures and we're kind of waiting on benefits deals and things like that that we have a good conversation about what that looks like I believe the assembly Bill puts a ceiling on what the board compensation can be for a district RSI it's not necessarily the state saying you have to do that but rather putting a ceiling on board compensation for that so I look forward to hearing uh hopefully a conversation on that topic uh tonight I know that's I think it may be in the consent agenda I'm thank you very much everyone for attending this report Dr Jimenez yes thank you for president Laredo members of the board cabinet Stefan Community uh this evening for the superintendent report if I can get the slide that going and let's go to slide number 2 I would like to highlight um updates you know we're back in session after having 2 weeks of spring break so our students are focused and looking forward to the end part of the year which is the part which you know our students are going to start taking their caste assessments some have started and we also have in May the AP exam so it's a really busy time at the school site as well as our students who are planning their next year in college and I know uh over uh right before the break we had some acceptances and I know there was some uh cheers but there was also tears and so I think you know we want to be supportive of our students and just let them know that any college that they attend they can make a difference and so I want to make sure that it's not so much as we all know many of us have got to different colleges uh but all of our colleges uh are capable of producing you know students that will achieve many great things so I just want to put that out there for our students to stay focused and also to reach out if you need any help or support I know we have an amazing counseling team at the high school so please reach out uh to them also some of our other support staff that we have at this at the school site whether it's Mental Health Counselors or some of our other support staff as well I do want to highlight the covert High School The Bagel Bites robotics team they have been on a real nice Street and and uh attending different competitions I know they have completed their 2 competition that they complete in the spring and this particular example they out of 317 teams they had tied for fifth place at a Edition or spring break which was very impressive for our students to be able to do given all the teams that they're competing with some are even private schools so our team is doing very well out there so we look forward to their continued success if I can get the next slide I do want to mention the Culver City High School did receive an AP honor role uh award at the Gold level so this all has to do with how many students are taking the AP exams as well as completion rates so just just want to give a shout out there to the school for uh this achievement because that does uh make a difference with respect to the profile that our school has uh on college acceptances so each of our high schools and our Nation have a college profile and admission officers use those as a way to determine the rigor that a school has so glad to see that they received the gold status also in the news we received just this information recently that our cover City High lady centaurs which the board had on her previously they did very well and the police first place of the small hip-hop Division and also they were level Champions uh as well as the grand Champions which is given for receiving the high score out of all the competing dance teams such that they received a bid to be in the final competition the prime finals which is in Orlando Florida I know they're looking for sponsorships and and so that's something that you know is a very difficult thing to do because it's travel all the way across the country so I know they're reaching out to various uh levels of support so that being said I do want to go to our next slide which is introducing in our Clover City Middle School principal Crystal Lane so if you can please stand we are pleased yes we are pleased to formally introduce and welcome Mrs Crystal Lane as a new principal of Culver City Middle School Crystal began in this role last Monday and has already hit the ground running meeting with staff learning about the campus and becoming familiar with all aspects of Culver City Middle School Crystal brings a wealth of experience to this position she most recently served a middle school principal in Texas and San Jose and previously as an assistant principal in Washington throughout her career she has demonstrated a strong instructional background and a deep commitment to Student Learning she is widely recognized as a collaborative leader who partners the staff in the community to maximize resources and positively impact student outcomes her former supervisor described her as energetic and someone who who will be among the hardest working individuals on a campus dedicated to Excellence and committed to making meaningful strides for the students and her care she was highly regarded by both her staff and the family she served in addition to her professional experience Miss Lane holds a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Redland and is on track to complete her PhD in education leadership and organization this may her dedication to continuous learning reflects her strong commitment to Excellence in Education and Leadership please join me in welcoming Crystal the lane to our team and we'll have her share a few words this evening thank you thank you so much um good evening president Laredo vice president Guerrero board members Dr Jimenez and our Culver City Community it has been an absolute pleasure joining this community 2 weeks ago I had the pleasure and the benefit of coming in during spring break so I was able to kind of acclimate myself before everyone jumped in um and there are some of the most dedicated teachers I have ever met the students are amazing and the community is invested so I'm very thankful for this opportunity and so excited to be part of the Culver City Unified School District family and part of this amazing group of people thank you so much you so much Miss Lane if I get the next slide uh this evening we do have some cabinet updates and I know it was mentioned this evening regarding the cell phone policy committee so I know I had put something out in Cobra Pride to provide some clarity on that because the committee has been busy I mean we've had 4 meetings and committee wanted a fifth meeting and so people on the committee are working really well with 1 another and their bonding and we keep talking about a potluck so I don't know if it's going to happen for the last meeting but we will see uh so for that this evening I'm going to have Dr Henrik provided an update on the cell phone policy committee if I can get the next slide please the next slide as well so good evening I'm happy to share a brief update and yes hopefully a potluck at the end um on our cell phone policy committee work and we have been hard at work the work is aligned with the newer state requirements under AB 3216 which calls for policy adoption by July 2026 and comes with a focus on learning safety and student well-being as the background through this process we finalized a draft board policy yay that establishes clear consistent expectations across all schools and we are now developing and finalizing Ing and administrative regulation to guide site level implementation and what we're seeing across our data is consistent cellphone consistent cell phones are a distraction during instruction and there's a strong support from staff students and families for clearer more consistent expectations next slide so our approach moving forward is both consistent and developmentally appropriate ensuring strong expectations across all schools while allowing for age appropriate implementation at each level our next steps are to finalize the board policy and administrative regulation continued feedback loops and bring this policy forward for the board's first reading with implementation plan planning for the 2627 school year the timeline Keeps Us aligned with the state requirements will ensuring that we do this work thoughtfully and well and we look forward to sharing more with you soon next slide please so this this slide outlines our next steps and timeline a little more focused here on May 26th we'll bring the board policy and ar4 for the first reading followed by the second reading and anticipated approval on June in during the June 9th board meeting and by June 30th we'll finalize the student handbook updates to ensure Readiness for implementation and as you know timelines and education don't always move in a perfect straight line though we wish they did and there may be some adjustments along the way we've really built this plan to ensure that we remain on track and ready for a strong evening president Laredo and members of the board the middle school is busy with several several Upcoming Events first our eighth grade formal is coming up next month May 16th ASB members have narrowed it down to the top 4 themes disco New York Hollywood and Vegas and we are officially launching a poll this week so the 8th grade class can vote for their favorite we are currently looking toward the future ASB interviews for the 2026 2027 term are taking place Monday through Thursday of this week for our Rising seventh and eighth graders this Thursday April 16th is Panther palooza this is a huge day where we welcome fifth graders from all 5 of our elementary schools they'll get to see presentations from Avid web in our Sports programs we'll also have an ASB panel a cheer performance and a special preview of our spring musical Beauty and the Beast from our Advanced theater class make sure to get your tickets our band and Orchestra will also be taking a staged finally we invite everyone to our open house next Wednesday April 22nd from 5 to 7:00 p.m. we'll kick we'll kick it off with performances from speed choir improv musical theater Panther band concert and panther Orchestra from 5:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. with classroom visits beginning at 6:00 thank you thank you so much Mr khong good evening board members here's my student report for this meeting tomorrow we are hosting this year's cultural assembly the model for this assembly is unity in diversity the road Forum in the assembly we have La Forza Asian cultural clubs and many other cultural clubs presenting topics they feel passionate about we've had many rehearsals and ASP is more than excited for our annual cultural assembly starting last week students have been tirelessly campaigning for the ASB elections today during lunch candidates gave speeches to our student body convincing the student body why they should win and Thursday will be class Council candidate is voting starts next week so we are very excited to see who will represent ASB and who will replace my seat as the next student representative April 22nd is Earth Day on that day we hope to raise awareness for climate change ASP students will be handing out small Sprouts can wear on their head and we will help to promote walking and biking to school happening a week after is our school's second lift up the lift up is a schoolwide event where club sports and organizations lifting to song as a camera walks down the halls with the rehearsal on the 22nd and and the final for on April 29th we hope to end off our school year with a celebration of cover Pride thank you and since Alexia isn't here she did not have a speech but she did have preferential votes should I provide them now uh Alexia's preferential vote is 11.1 yes 11.2 yes 11.3 nay 11.4 yes 11.5 yes 13.1 through 13 .3 are all Nays she has a small um thing of text for 13.2 and 13.3 when should I read that because I will not be here for them so is that good uh but I'll read it now this is relating to 13.2 13.3 the addition of the AP classes AP for personal I forgot the exact name let me find him yeah personal finance and AP psychology AP classes are though although are an amazing place where students can further their education result in further stress for students who will take as many AP classes as possible in order to seem competitive in the eyes of colleges giving students an opportunity in which they can further the knowledge themselves makes them stand out with colleges and I don't think providing the most AP classes as possible will lead to long-lasting benefits to our school instead more stressed for classes that frankly shouldn't even qualify as an AP class according to the Stanford report colleges don't always accept the courses for college credit many students end up repeating the course in college anyways and you can run the risk of memorizing material for a test versus delving into a subject and exploring it in an enriching way our student body would feel more harm then help with these APS thank you thank you very much and do you have any uh preferential votes at this time I do not all right moving on to members of the audience items on the uh how many speaker cards do we have right now and zoom hands so we have a speaker card although I think the item that uh was on the agenda was the error on the agenda 9.3 um is there Greg Gaz in here is that okay so I don't it's not actually on the agenda anymore um I don't know what you want to do with this but do we have any require like uh would you still if they are speaking on items that are on the agenda tonight at 3 minutes and we're closing public comment okay all right go ahead uh good evening my name is Greg Gazeta I lived in Culver City for 26 years and I co-parent and child in the district I want to start by saying that I'm not here to oppose the partial tax I understand why the revenue matters and I take the district's financial situation seriously that's exactly why I'm here at the last meeting this board unanimously certified a qualified budget not a positive qualified that's a formal declaration that the district may not be able to meet its Financial Obligations in the coming years I think that find that that finding deserves to be part of this conversation not if not tonight when it is on the agenda because it shapes what voters will need to believe before they hear say yes to the new tax in my experience and I managed multi-million dollar projects when an organization is in financial distress adding Revenue without fixing the underlying structure doesn't solve the problem problem it extends it and then you'll have to come back to the community again so my question offered genuinely is this what structural commitments will accompany this measure enrollment has declined this year again this year we're at 6 81 students down from 6,694 last year that's a trend not a blip and the revenue alone doesn't address it the district's administrative structure has real gaps that affect how well money gets deployed no dedicated facilities director managing a bond program worth tens of millions of dollars no Communications function to keep the community informed and know 1 in a COO type of role coordinating operations across departments these aren't luxuries any organization managing this level of complexity their basics I encourage the board to think about what accountability mechanisms will be baked into this measure not just oversight that confirms money will be spent legally but oversight that asks whether it will be spent the community we want to know that before they vote I want these schools to drive the I'm sorry to thrive I think most people in this room do but Community Trust is earned and right now it's thin the path the passing of partial tax runs through Dem demonstrating that the district is structured to make the most of it thank you thanks and then a k bear so uh Ron if you want to go ahead and speak that's correct I think you have to unmute there we go okay there we go have I been uh switched on hello hello all right first of all I wanted to uh welcome Miss Lane to our middle school I had the pleasure of meeting with her yesterday and I am very very optimistic that it is uh a great fit for our district and that we are in very capable hands so I very much look forward to working with her uh the first item that I'd like to comment on is uh a consent item 16.6 this is dealing with the Aries and uh parents where additions uh just a housekeeping uh item I believe the download Tabs are reversed areas is uh labeled as parent square and vice versa uh however on the um attendance plus edition if this is a mechanism that will help with the procedure I've been uh talking about for for months which is rationalizing the Ada recapture process through independent study uh something I've been talking to Dr indelicato about as well if this will help us uh deal with the uh the the Overload at the front office of having our attendance uh people work with it by computerizing some of the process this will be the best 18,000 we've ever spent so I really really hope that the attendance Plus will help do that I'd love to hear if it would but this would be absolutely phenomenal so thank you for being on top of that I appreciate it um and the final item is 1615 uh Dr Menace cleaned up a part of it um that is the Williams complaint uh form there where you had mentioned uh there was an extra uh tally in the not reported um actually there's another error that needs to be fixed on that 1 form it has a checked off that there were no complaints on the quarter and nothing will be reported to the state where in fact as you had identified Dr uh Jimenez there is in fact 1 so just to clean up on that that is it so uh thank you very much okay thank you and then uh our last comment is a k bear online it's Dr Tano I was out who that is okay Dr Tano hello hi is board members um I very much apologize for having my nickname on my zoom I don't know how to change it but um this is Dr kanou and um I'm here to speak with you guys about uh item number 13.2 so this is my 20th year here in this district and I know just like you guys uh we're all highly motivated to make cover City The Shining Star of Los Angeles and 1 way we can do that is through both sir bolstering up our programs offerings for students I know that there is a some controversy around the AP class um bringing in more AP classes but I wanted to remind the board that this is not just an AP class but it's actually a brand new CTE pathway and um what's different about this AP class is that there are no prerequisites which means that anybody can take it and it will open opportunities for students of color and students who would not normally be tracked into an AP course to have that opportunity to try 1 um our district is a little behind when it comes to financial education uh we have our surrounding districts that already have their business CT pathway and a lot of districts who are already set to adopt this course and so I want to encourage uh yes vote for this course the other concern that I wanted to mention is that even though this doesn't meet the financial ma Mandate of ab 2927 uh I've had many conversations with the College Board and in groups of teachers who are potentially going to teach this course next year and there's a lot of action and movement towards getting this course approved through SP 1147 and if that and it will be eligible uh we have a lot of students uh I think the last number I heard was 135 students signed up for the course already so I've had conversations with them everybody's excited to have it going um we have students who want to be president of deca which we currently are not eligible for it's a National Organization for high school students who are interested in business but if we have the CTE pathway we would be eligible for that and since I am a current employee and I also have my business degree um it's very easy for me to step into that role uh because I could get my CTE credential through for business that way um I think it's an exciting opportunity it's a uh Project based course and I think we should not pass it up so thank you for your time and your thoughtful dedication to our district and that's it thank you thank you that's it thank you um you have to forgive me because I really thought I had my uh notebook here with who went last um who went first last and I I think I think it was you right and so uh we would start with Mr Guerrero and then uh work work our way back around thank you so much good evening everyone uh Happy Passover and Easter to those who celebrate uh I think Orthodox Easter was the most recent last Sunday um it is also Arab American Heritage Month recognizing contributions past present and future of arab-americans the United States uh bilingual advocacy month something near and dear to me and many of us here in Culver City with our fantastic dual language uh programs also Child Abuse Prevention month um and something we take very seriously uh at all levels um couple of things that I've been fortunate enough participate in recently uh we had the uh PTA student takeover at Ling con uh last week which is always a great event besides a fantastic PTA uh students really run the show for part of the evening and highlight some things that are their concerns um I think uh the good news is the scale of those concerns has kind of stepped down a little bit in the last couple of years as we've dealt with some of their issues but they had some thoughts on uh cleanliness of drinking fountains and repair of drinking fountains then uh some equipment issues that they they want to uh work with the district on so that was good um also participate in the L ring on cleanup this weekend uh on Saturday it was really nice to see just tons and tons of Lan parents coming out to help uh beautify the campus and and do um some great work you know I know we had 1 at the middle school a couple of months weeks ago I hear there was 1 at El Marino although it was at the same time as the elrond con 1 uh the drag show at the high school uh Friday evening put on by the Reproductive Rights group uh club and the tolerance club and always good time glad to see that 1 continuing as a tradition um I was fortunate enough to be able to attend uh sponsored by the Center Theater group uh a play uh put on at uh the high school last Wednesday I think it was about maybe it was 2 yeah no last Wednesday about uh the life of the lotus wera um 1 of the exciting things about it is uh Center theater group is really working on putting a traveling kind of school theater uh program back together I guess something that they had done in the past um uh and and wanted to really stir up again this 1 was particularly done in the style of something called theatro Campesino which is uh something really used to empower Farm Workers um and get them in some of the roles of of doing the theater for other uh Farm Workers um and at the same time telling the the story of the life of Dolores Wertz so thank you for everybody who had a role in putting that together um today I was able to drop by um the Elementary music showcase at the high school which was fantastic um students fourth graders fifth graders coming to see the different bands and musical opportunities uh at the middle school and at the high school um it's 1 of those things I used to be a middle school teacher and there's always a concern that you know a lot of Elementary parents think of high school and think of middle school and they think of you know these big schools where their kids are going to get lost and you know there's some fear about going to middle school that next step and so things like this where our elementary students come to the high school come to the middle school they see the middle school and the the high school student is performing and doing exciting things and and doing things that they really want to be a part of really helps that um I think it also underlines the importance of that articulation and coordination from K through 12 of our arts program um and different programs just to make that kind of the thing uh that kind of opportunity possible um and why that's so important I was talking to some students at the elementary level who want to do elementary Arts because it'll help do Middle School Arts because it'll then help them do high school art so um the importance of starting early with that um and then I just want to also close with the same congratulations to all of our colleagues in La USD um utla members SEIU members the AAA the administrators Union uh members um and the district for kind of it took to the last minute midnight of the last night um but coming to agreements that uh are going to benefit the employees but most of all the students uh in the district and got right up to the edge of a of a disruption but mostly avoiding that disruption so congratulations to all of them thank you uh Miss Carlson okay um let's see here I'm just going to go to my notes Here I hope everybody had a great Spring Break um I stayed here worked my day job the 1 that supports my families and and family excuse me singular and pays the bills uh well my family traveled uh being a mom of a young child though and having the opportunity to be home on my own I suppose was his own kind of uh break so I hope other folks were able to do so as well uh before the break I participated in the California school boards association's legislative action week during which school board members met with legislators to discuss issues and bills of importance to our district these priorities included ending the practice of holding back money the state is constitutionally required to provide to school districts under proposition 98 I understand that amounts to about 5 million this year for CCSD um address ing the disasters impacts of ab2 18 on School District finances and a package of bills aimed at closing the achievement Gap among others I joined the meeting with our Senator Lisa kuaz however she was not there um although she sent a staffer to take notes and report back I also had them opportunity to is um our csba rep was looking for some other folks to fill in on a few other meetings to meet with Senator Carolyn mvar and assembly member Nick Schultz uh both of these 2 are relatively new legislators and districts in the San Fernando Valley and in Burbank um they seem to be very interested in and informed on the issues which I found very promising also attended the income PTA student takeover that was really fun um some people may know my son attended eleron for TK we still have a lot of friends there it was nice to see them last weekend I held my 16th listening session that's 1 of these every month since I have been on the board um I do this you know try to um be out there in the community and provide opportunities for folks to talk directly to me that may not necessarily be able to do so otherwise uh we talked about education in the schools retiree benefits and some current issues relating to our budget and once again I just want to encourage anyone and everyone who would like to hear from me about an issue that they care about to come to 1 of these I provide notice of them through my email and on Facebook and given the demands on my time is not possible for me to respond to all the emails that I receive on a regular basis so this is usually the best opportunity on Saturday evening I also dropped by the get out the funk event uh benefiting backpacks for kids great to see so many members of our community especially those whose kids have long graduated from ccs and even might not have had kids in our schools at all there to support our student population uh I really appreciate that about our community and I want to give a shout out to our cchs principal Dr melvo Who was also in attendance getting out the funk um and and then finally just something that's a little bit Bittersweet the Culver City sister city committee just took our first set of students to Capo Orlando our sister city in Italy over spring break as you probably know I went to visit the delegation last summer and helped to facilitate that plan um and what you may or may not know is that Culver City resident Tina Mollica who is originally from a neighboring town in Sicily was instrumental in establishing the sister city partnership um Tina passed away last week unfortunately um I didn't know her very well but I did have the opportunity to have a few conversations with her at sister City events she'll be missed in this community a great deal and I would also like to request that we adjourn in her memory tonight um and that is it from me thank you thank you uh first of all I want to apologize for the small technology glitch um with uh with with with my notice is going off here I finally fixed the problem but did not mean to distract from the important issues and the input from the community so uh thank you for bearing with me even those of us who work in technology sometimes will get um overwhelmed um uh I first of all um uh today is Holocaust Memorial Day um uh where we a member of the uh not only the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust but the uh almost equivalent number of uh of uh of of others uh whether it be LGBT persons with disabilities uh folks who were from left-leaning political beliefs uh Roma and others um uh I do want to uh wish belatedly uh those who had a happy Easter Passover eat Allah we are in arab-american Heritage Month and last week was also autism awareness day as well um uh there's a lot going on our community and a lot of folks uh whose voice need to be heard uh so we're thankful for each of those days and and these uh these these various commemorative uh events in order to uh understand where we come from and appreciate those who are contributing to our community um I did uh also participate in the legislative action week uh meeting with a number of assembly member staff on the same issues um I also uh had the opportunity to uh attend uh the vendee museum I believe it's the Festival of ideas uh it was amazing very interesting especially a lot of the discussions around AI um it is inevitable it is in our lives and trying to figure out how to deal not how to appreciate the creativity but also how to deal with this um changes in Technologies responsibly is going to be very important also uh attended uh a forum on anti-Semitism in K through 12 uh which was uh attended as well buy some folks from the Jewish Federation um I will say that from what I've heard through other communities I do want to commend the district and our board members on the work that we've done to build our relationship with the Jewish community and address auntie Summit ISM um I I try without speaking for the board I am very proud of the great work that everyone is doing here on this uh I did miss uh the uh CH cchs uh booster club and they get the funk out event um because my flight back from the DNC meeting in New Orleans was sitting on the tarmac for 40 minutes staring at a gate uh uh where I was hoping I would at least be able to make the end but there are some things you can't control um that is life but uh I'm glad that everything went well and was happy as an individual to promote these events uh which contribute to Great events uh in the community um I am um just going to close with I have heard a lot of questions and discussions in the community from the uh with respect to the the budget um itself uh possible solutions and we're all working together on that I am just going to remind people of a couple of Statistics here um that are out there without talking to anything to a policy because for a different item uh another day if we when we deal with this but we uh as was mentioned earlier we have 5 million that's being withheld from us by the state in addition the federal government the president just released uh his budget um which which would cut programs from 6.6 billion to 2.2 billion under the idea of block grants so while the money is Consolidated 2/3 of it is being cut to schools such as ourselves including important title 3 Program for English Learners regardless of what their documentation status is uh we um we also um have uh that's a couple hundred thousand right there um we're losing probably I would say over the last couple years total maybe about 2 to 3 from declining enrollment although that may at some point rebound um depending on what happens with those 4,000 units um we're also losing between 4 to 7 million from the expiration of the community redevelopment agency this is money that was taken away uh sometime ago and there is no replacement uh at this time for that and yes of course there was the 1.9 million in fines and bad contracts which were discussed before but as you can see um these numbers are are pretty substantial uh and come from a variety of sources uh and uh from someone who has worked in business as well you do you know you do of course try to find ways to restructure and cut but you also restructure how you find your Revenue to adapt when markets change and I appreciate the efforts of those that are trying to do that to make sure that we can maintain our programs maintain our Administration maintain uh the important services to make sure every student through lives in this District thank you I don't do not want to uh be repetitive with my colleagues but I do want to continue to thank our engaged and passionate uh volunteers and community members that have been part of the solution to raise money for uh our our student needs uh including the Exchange Club um and who raised money for backpacks for kids as well as the uh CC CCH booster club fundraiser I attended both of those last Saturday and I'm just in awe of the type of uh energy and uh time that folks have put invested into our community um and thankful I do want to mention items so the next item is 9.2 state seal of Civic engagement uh Dr velvet Friday and Dr Hinrich thank you thank you board president good good evening if we could get the the slide deck up or maybe not Brian or be just 1 moment I try to bring up my zoom in that time recording in progress all right now ready so good evening board president members of the board cabinet and our members of our our Carl City Community this this evening we're excited to share an overview of the state seal of Civic engagement Culver City High School next slide please so to provide some background this work has been developed in close partnership with our Culver City High School team and I want to recognize tonight with us Dr Valverde who is here this evening and has been very instrumental in leading this effort along with Michelle Brantley and Amy Theo who have supported the design of our high school pathway at the state level this work originates from assembly bill for which was passed in 2017 and it establishes the state seal of Civic engagement in 2020 the State Board of Education adopted the criteria and guidance for the implementation the purpose of the seal is to recognize students who demonstrate Civic knowledge engagement and the understanding of democratic systems and to formally acknowledge that work on their transcripts and diplomas next slide please at Culver City High School the state seal of Civic engagement recognize students who demonstrate the Civic knowledge their leadership and meaningful Community impact at its core this work is about preparing students to be informed and engaged citizens we want our students to leave our system not only academically prepared but also if a strong sense of responsibility to their communities locally and Beyond it's about helping them understand the world around them engaging with thoughtful with thoughtful action critical thinking and being able to contribute and make contributions in meaningful ways next slide please okay uh beginning in the ninth grade students will have the will first be introduced to the um state seal opportunity um all High School students then would be eligible to earn the seal by their 11th or 12th grade year uh recognition is given to students in 12th grade um via their uh the state seal on their certificate of completion or um and the Seal of noted on their diploma um all students will access the opportunity to earn the Civic seal of Engagement and and for us Student Success is the goal so therefore we are we have multiple entry points to participate into this program uh and earn the seal from working as an individual looking towards completion or to multiple students working on a group project or with a club for example clubs that we have on campus like interact why I'm uh the the boat 16 um and then also off campus we have youth youth and government so we have a lot of students interested in this next slide please here we have some some criteria but if we can go to the next slide please um we are currently at the implementation stage for our high School seal Pathway to begin uh this year um with our first graduating class to have the opportunity to earn um this prestigious um seal and uh our final implementation steps at the high school level begin in the fall of 2026 training uh the implementation of our state seal site learning committee and cite publication and informational meetings for students such as through RCP Flex sessions to conclude we are excited to have the class of 2027 as the first graduate ating class with the ability to earn the uh uh ccusd state seal of Civic engagement we look forward to the problem solving and engagement of Culver City Community as we help guide them through and become engaged active civic-minded young adults uh they will exit our doors at graduation with the more global view and what it means to be a contributing member to our society the formerly recognized and meaningful Civic work of many of our students that that many of our students are already doing while also expanding access so that more students see themselves as Civic leaders at this stage our focus is on finalizing site based criteria building awareness and ensuring equitable access for all students we'll continue to engage stakeholders and refine implementation as we prepare for our first cohort the class of 20127 we're excited about the opportunity that this creates for our students and our community thank you this this is an info item so uh if you all would like to have any uh questions or anything um and if not we will say thank you I mean I just wanted to say this is extremely cool um and I'm so glad you all are doing this and and getting this going um I just I guess so what can we do is board members to sort of to help this be successful and get their information out there we we need to just move forward and start Implement implementing this in the next fall um I would love to use the summer to prepare and get you know work on on what we're going to be doing to deliver that information to our um Community yeah okay and also might I add is that we would love to have views once the students prepare their projects at the end there's a culminating project that they share out and it's highly encouraged through the state criteria that we have a committee come to help judge so to speak but to help give feedback to the students and also to participate as an audience and that would be incredible for our board would have the if you have the time and you're able to come we'd love to see see you there as well okay fantastic that was going to be my question too but I just so appreciate your work in this area you know civic education has fallen off so much and we're seeing we're paying a price as we're seeing and then our modern discourse so the more that we can have programs like this that can bring this back into the public forum the more important it is so thank you thank you ma'am Dr V you and I have talked about this since maybe 2023 long time and so I'm glad that it's finally coming to fruition um I did not ask you this ahead of time but will there be an ability for the high school to look at um the criteria that has already happened I mean H has already been checked off by our class of 2027 to do some Outreach prior to the fall of next year so that our our students can already know like oh I just have to do this 1 1 thing to culminate with this seal is that possible yeah yes that is certainly possible and another great thing about the presentations at the end of the year is um in previous places that I've worked with we've invited the student body to come and interested parties so they get to see and see what it's all about but certainly they can um begin to look at that criteria and make and check off as yeah so I mean I guess it would be most helpful that the the admins or you know whoever is looking at the uh the schedules to uh their counselors to to take a look and see so that they can prepare for it now going into the fall right yeah that's for sure and Dr Valverde and I have talked about how he you know he he's very instrumental and and Innovative and forward thinking about how this can work we spoke about even having information section uh sessions and CP flux time and some workshops Etc to help advertise but also inform well you do so much to help our uh our city Thrive and I think you uh for keeping at it all this time okay so moving on 9.3 is deleted 9.4 is the enrollment report good evening board members so this item provides enrollment data for month 7 and month 8 of 2526 school year the report reflects to K TK to 12 enrollment by grade level across all Sites based on our attendance reporting cycles and it also includes our adult school and trade preschool programs for both month 7 and month 8 the 2526 enrollment remains steady at 6,581 students when you look at the comparison to last year the months data reflects the correct 2425 numbers however in the month 8 report the prior year comparison was inadvertently populated with 23 24 data instead of the 2425 data thank you Mr Guerrero um when we come compare um the 2526 enrollment with the last year's data we have gained approximately 21 students in 2526 overall this reflects a stable and slightly positive enrollment trend yeah thank you very much Miss Rosie for for uh making that correction will we get that added like switched in when this is published as minutes or something um so that I'll eventually be publicly available yes okay and and it's just underlined the importance of that you know last year looking at the change from the previous year to last year um there was definitely a drop in enrollment but we put a lot of effort into kind of a resting that drop and statistically it's probably about flat um but it it's nice to see a little bit of an increase um or at least that we are not declining at the moment we have to see if that's a longer term Trend um but given the impacts on budget and community and and just the effort everybody's put into it it's good to see the the increase reflected in this in a little bit of fruit from that all that work thank you no additional comments for me thank you um just to clarify will the updated report be only on the minutes or will it all be swapped in on the agenda on the on the actual agenda because uh sometimes people don't search for the minutes they search for the agenda and so I don't want the old um attachment hanging out there yes so I think I would defer to my assistant uh Rebecca because given the quirky of the system I know it is possible to do where you can go back in but I'm going to do for for her explanation and if so she's saying that we can okay um okay so I I was about to say like if we can't maybe it can come back like um at the next enrollment report um whenever that happens to be as a correction um so how however throw away we do it let's just make sure that it it gets corrected in diligent so I think 1 suggestion is we would keep the reports that are attached right now and then we will add a corrected report for the months month 8 which will be attached to agenda so they can see it great yeah great thank you okay 9.5 uh school resource officer update I don't know superintendent if you could introduce Thank You by President Laredo members of the board so this evening we actually have a update on our school resource officer program so we have Captain Andrew bellante with the cover City police department and joining him also is SRO Banda so I will hand this over uh to other you are back here captain vellante and actually he does have an updated slide so we do have copies of that here for members of uh the public and also with this particular 1 we'll be making it an adjustment to actually put the uh presentation that has the additional slide thank you thank you superintendent and good evening members of the school board my name is Andrew bolante and I am the cap then overseeing the Culver City Police Department Special Operations Bureau before I begin I would like to thank the board School staff parents and students for your continued support of the police department and the school resource officer program this program has been play for over 20 years and its success would not be possible without the strong partnership we share with the school Community joining me this evening is school resource officer Patricia Banda who is seated beside me tonight we are pleased to provide a brief overview of the Sr oh program including its Mission and core responsibilities we will also share data from the past year related to the program as well as highlight the successes of our student diversion efforts next slide please I'd like to take a moment to expand on the key roles and responsibilities of a school resource officer first and foremost sro's are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students staff and visitors this goes beyond simply responding to emergencies it includes maintaining visible presence on campus conducting safety assessments coordinating with school staff on emergency preparedness plans and responding quickly and effectively to any situation that may arise sro's also play a critical role in crime prevention by proactively identifying potential risks monitoring campus activity and addressing concerns early they help prevent incidents before they occur this preventative approach is essential in maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment building positive relationships is at the heart of the SRO role officers work to establish trust with students staff and parents by being approachable engaged and present in Daily school life these relationships encourage students speak up when they need help report concerns and View Law Enforcement as a supportive resource rather than just an authority in addition sro's provide valuable education to students they may deliver presentations or participate in classroom discussions on topics such as personal safety responsible decision making and the consequences of risky Behavior this educational component helps students develop awareness and make informed decisions sro's also serve as a vital liaison between the school the police department and the broader Community they facilitate communication coordinate responses when needed and ensure that all stakeholders are working together to support student safety and well-being lastly sro's act as illegal resource for school administrators they provide guidance on laws policies and appropriate and appropriate responses to incidents helping administrators navigate complex situations with Clarity and confidence together these responsibilities reflect a balanced approach to focus not only on safety and enforcement but also on prevention education and relationship building ultimately supporting a positive and secure School environment for all next slide please I'd like to take a moment to introduce SRO Patricia Banda officer Banda is proudly served uh with the Culver City Police Department for over 9 years she holds a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Cal State San Marcos where she was also a Collegiate softball player her commitment to teamwork and Excellence continued Beyond College as she earned a gold medal in the police and fire games for the last 3 years officer Banda has served as a school resource officer where she has taken on significant responsibility within our community she currently provides services to 9 schools within the Culver City Unified School District as well as 14 private educational institutions throughout the city in addition to her work in schools officer bindaas was also a member of the crisis negotiation team and the community policing team further demonstrating her dedication to both Public Safety and Community engagement officer band is experienced professionalism and commitment to building positive relationships maker an invaluable part of our SRO program and our community and we are very lucky to have her please if you see officer Banda out and about do not hesitate to say hello next slide please I would like to now share a brief overview of the SRO program activity and engagement over the past year in the year 2025 SRO Banda responded to a total of 332 calls for service within Culver City Unified School District Schools along with an additional 91 1 calls at private educational institutions throughout the city depicted on the slide are the number of calls for service at each respective School within the district these calls range from routine service requests to more urgent situations requiring immediate attention reflecting the active role sro's play in cap campus safety in addition to calls for service SRO Banda authored approximately 20 formal reports involving incidents that occurred on ccusd school ground such as battery theft and criminal threats while these situations are taken seriously they represent a small portion of overall student interactions and each is handled with care and compassion a focus on safety and and appropriate resolution SRO Banda along with the Department's community policing team are deeply engaged in community oriented activities at the schools throughout the year they participate in events such as career fairs at each School National read day curbside coffee Trunk or Treat science and forensic fairs uh Santa sleigh program uh rock and rollers to name a few these events help strengthen relationships and build trust between officers students and Families every year SRO Banda also provides a wide range of educational seminars designed to support student well-being and awareness topics include cyberbullying prevention drug and alcohol intervention traffic safety and emergency preparedness these Pro active efforts are aimed at equipping students with the knowledge and tools they need to make safe and informed decisions overall this data highlights the balanced approach of the SRO program focused not only on safety and response but also on prevention education and Community engagement next slide please the Culver City Police Department's Juvenile Diversion program is designed as an alternative to the traditional Juvenile Justice process focusing on early intervention account ability and long-term positive outcomes for our youth created in 2017 the program aims to redirect young people who have committed low-level non-violent offenses away from formal Court proceedings instead of entering the justice system eligible juveniles have the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions while receiving guidance and support to make better choices upon successful completion of the program miners criminal cases expunged justice system I'm happy to report that since the program's implementation hundreds of Youth have successfully completed it and avoided placement in the criminal justice system notably in 2025 we were able to successfully divert 100% of eligible youth regarding CC USD students in 2025 there were 4 incidents on school campuses involving 7 students that were eligible for Diversion the demographics of the involved parties are depicted on the slide in each cases are obando work closely with the students their parents and the third party youth advocacy program to ensure every student and have the opportunity to participate I am proud to report that all 7 students enrolled in and successfully completed the 3-month conversion program parents also shared positive feedback highlighting the program's role and fostering personal growth and responsibility in conclusion ccpd Juvenile Diversion program has been remarkably successful uh consistently guiding eligible youth towards positive outcomes for nearly a decade our SRO plays an instrumental role in engaging students families and Community Partners to ensure the program's effectiveness its success not only transforms individual lives but also strengthens our community making it safer and more supportive for everyone next slide please that concludes the presentation SRO Banda and our and I are available for any questions thank you Mr ra thank you for the presentation um I just had a few quick questions um with regards to when you going over the calls made you would put them into 2 buckets I think 1 of them was what you would call routine service requests and the other 1 where maybe more maybe more serious if you could just explain what a routine service request would look like yeah so some of the routine calls that officer banned uh um a lot she gets a lot of calls of uh social media threats or maybe beefs going on on social media um maybe it's uh a fight you know that occurred within the school um sometimes you know we'll get a report of a a potential fight that's maybe scheduled for after school so she'll work with the school administration on you know coming up with best practices to prevent that from recurring um and occasional calls like that thank you um really excited about this this is something that I think the board has been asking for for a while um hearing from you all and is kind of a support that was similar to something that came to the district that he lays on committee a few years ago that me and board president Loretto sit on and and witnessed in that presentation they were able to break down the data of service calls even more to see where those calls were coming from and I think that a few years ago um when at the time kept in Sims was giving this report um he had he had shared that actually most to those calls were coming from the site so I don't know if right now you have that data of where those calls are coming from um but I think I would definitely be interested in knowing and perhaps my colleagues as well just so we can understand I think you know where the demand is coming from and if it's at the time I think it was a lot of site Administration making those calls so I don't know if you if you know at the top of your head yeah um are you referring to where the highest call volume is at what schools or or who is calling not about what schools it's it's like who's who's calling so when you're saying you're responding to incidences is it that communities calling you is it that site administration's calling your students calling Etc yeah I would say it's a mixed bag I don't have the actual data so associated with that often times what calls from school security sometimes it's School administration um sometimes it may be community members um in the general area of the school so I don't have the actual data for that but it's pretty much a mixed bag okay thank just lastly always really excited to hear about diversion I think as much as possible that's a program that I think we definitely likely hear about a lot so thank you so much for for your work on that that's all I have for President just want to thank you um officer band of obviously seen the great work in the community in many of the schools and we've appreciated uh your Outreach your compassion your coordination and this diversion program also sounds like it's uh yielded some great results as well thank you and I just I want to uh do a little bit of comparison um is you were giving 2025 but is that school year or calendar year so that is for the calendar year so January 1st to December 31st Okay so add uh the last was for the school year of August 2022 June 2023 and just for the sake of comparison you know it's not the same time frame but it's this you know it's a it's a similar 10-month um area um in in that time frame you had reported well not you but like ccpd had reported that there was a total of 513 calls and this is like a little bit postco return like and so for me I also feel like like not only does this talk to um a leveling out of school and City climate in terms of supports that our students and the overall communities getting um but it's also it also is reflective of you know uh any structures in place that we have on our campuses to make sure that we may have a um a response already that is uh that we are taking so that um it's a preventative measure to uh so that it won't escalate to a call to um to PD so that for me is significant even though it's not the same time period I know it's still like from going from 300 to um coming down from 500 plus calls it I think that it does mean a lot and I would be curious in the future um you know uh a year from in future of seeing this historical Trend um and maybe it's been you know slowly coming down since the the time that we had this back in 2223 um and I just want to also um just note for the public that um SRO Banda is not like our first you know line of prevention or defense or you know in terms of um pre preventing crimes we and also just providing care for our community uh you know we do have our own Educators as well as our um classified our our Educators that includes our classified employees as well as our our um security our our security officers and so all of these folks combined make up this great Network that supports our students and um and our community um so thank you so much for for coming here I think that the the 100% diversion it means that you know we're uh uh we're making sure that we are not creating a uh well well not making sure we're endeavoring to uh to eliminate a school to prison Pipeline and that we are um that these are positive and hopeful results and um I just like to follow up with you in the future with um you know uh looking more at the data and and how else we can improve in the future uh we uh we do in the future I'm going to remind uh our board that we uh have a zero uh dollar SRO mou that does get renewed every so often um so this is kind of like in preparation of that to come forward in the future and since it would be over renewal that would wouldn't necessarily it would typically be in consent or something like that um since we have a great relationship uh right now um so if that's it um thank you so much next is action items um these are board policies and I will entertain these are all samples I will also entertain a move to move them as is but if you want to just say 1 thing about a certain 1 at this time that's fine too um I will entertain a motion I'll move to approve all of them yeah second any discussion I'm just wondering if we can just put this piece in consent I feel like we were just to prove them all when they're just first reads I mean when they're just routine like realigning with you know with this data is saying I think we can just put that in consent may I for president I said thank you uh what we did here was we put all of our since the last I believe 2 meetings now we put all of our board policies under the action section because what was happening we were getting uh direction from board to make certain changes and so when you start getting more direction to do certain changes it's more fitting to have a specialized section on action items because some of these are for first reading so if if the board wants to revert back to what we were doing before that's not his question question is about well you should just repeat it because it's it needs to be this big conversation I was just saying that if we're just going approved about the methods being consent but it's fine we do I am happy to do this stuff well I just for clarity this is a first read yeah so they wouldn't be approved now um and uh and he I thought I heard you say about the ones that are sample policies should like could it be in consent that's what I heard and is right yeah good I just want to thank you all for the sorry you have anything before I sorry you're before me yeah I was just gonna make a comment on a couple of them um just if you if that's okay I mean 30 seconds uh so just the charter school policy 11.3 you don't have any charter schools here I just wanted to make that clear like for the community that this is I'm assuming just something that we're doing sorry yeah yes uh typically the district will have that even even though we may not have any Charter Schools but just in case if that were ever to happen the charter school coming in wouldn't know what our policies are okay yeah fantastic I mean I'm just I'm just trying to provide a little bit of color for like anybody who might see that on our our agenda and say ah we're considering charter schools something so um as as we know rumors Fly Fast here um and then yeah just 11.5 social media policy I thought the policy generally looks good um just wanted to add and I don't think this is like policy related but it might be wise for us to maintain a list of the social media accounts uh for the district just for a number of reasons for providing oversight um information to families Etc um did you have something you wanted to say I see you smiling yes yes I'm smiling because yes it's been a asked already for us to do a that got it and that would include also uh categorizing and labeling and finding out who is out you know using our logos and such things like that so yes that would be included as part okay and then yeah just the 1 the then the last thing too on this social media policy I know we've we've had sort of uh fragmented and disjointed communication in the district um 1 thing that our prior superintendent had at least shared with me as a goal is to have some sort of communications person at the district level I mean it's not something that fits into budget right now I think we all acknowledge that but you know assuming that we have additional funding at some point it would be wonderful to be able to consolidate that with a person who's sort of in charge of overseeing everything that's all um likewise I know when I first got elected uh this um I attended a sort of a some of the training in csba about some of the changes and this was 1 of those that I think is very important in making sure that um also the person's authorized to make those changes uh or statements on behalf of the district is covered uh ditto with the communications aspect again it's not in our budget at the moment and maybe there's a better way with what we have have to be able to find a a more consistent way of getting our communication out but um this is a great update to the policy and excited to see it there yeah um I did have 1 comment actually on the first 1 uh 4119 uh 024 about appropriate relationships um it's really you know honestly I have not read every 1 of our hundreds and hundreds of policies and things like that um in the past but it's good to see some of these things that we've talked about in the existing policy um and and continuing to be in it and I just wanted to kind of encourage us particularly around this to think of oh I saw your hand go up um um have some way of doing some type of training or some type of memo or some type of documentation of this uh 4 staff um the ones that jumped out to me were were former uh number 5 it's going to be number 7 creating or participating in social networking sites for communication with students um and some of these things where we've seen teachers or coaches with completely good intentions create an email list or use a certain app for communicating with students or something like that in the program when ultimately they should be using District monitored and provided sources for that type of thing um that's always been a policy I know that policy hasn't always necessarily been enforced um but just to use this as an opportunity to remind and support our various programs and things if there's people who are doing you know something that they've created or some other type of app that they're using helping them migrate that back into the district system if they need some type of of you know texting way let's find a way to do something that's District monitored and District sanctioned um so they're doing that and they're not just creating getting their own WhatsApp or or whatever different kinds of groups are um the other 1 I did want to just specifically asked about these are things that are are discouraged or prohibited um old number 12 new number 14 encouraging students to confide their personal or family problems in relationships given that this is for staff we know that counselors are an exception to this right or or do we need to say something about I mean because there are certain people whose role is literally to talk to students about challenges with their families and things like that or or that they're experiencing out there and that's not every single employee and and you know in in the in an improper setting that could certainly be the exactly the type of problem that we're trying to void with this um but there are certain exceptions to that and I don't know if we need to note that or if it is assumed um that was just my comment on that 1 are you expecting a response no not at all okay I mean if somebody wants to talk to me about it some other time before it gets to Second uh that's fine um but those are just 2 things that jumped out at me um on that okay uh thank you for the questions and I would just like to say that I have it has been de prioritize or never been a priority but now that this stuff is coming up and now that the cell phone committee is um uh uh is far along in the process uh we do really need to take a look at how we're communicating out and um I've been asking for a tech audit since uh 2022 okay maybe it was the early 2023 but um so I think it will be really helpful for us to to take uh evaluate you know who who is responsible for each 1 of our official Communications and uh you know any emergency and What would happen in case of emergency who can uh who can take over at that uh when there is an issue with those accounts um all right um if I is more yes uh just we had votes uh preferential votes uh for 1112 and uh no uh uh 111 yes 112 no sorry yes 113 no amongst these those were the preferential votes provided do you did that again okay I I know this was just what was related to us just passing along I don't know if I had the same ones that's why I sorry scrolling scrolling all the way up yeah I mean it's uh we they didn't have to vote on this I think that they idea is that they're not um uh they're not on happy with 11th grade right mhm okay so moving on to 13 uh we have no superintendent action items so 13.1 13.1 is that we're asking the the governing board to approve the ratification of the agreement with the van dermatin Marcus Marcus sorry law corporation as presented the administration request the ratification of this agreement to provide specialized Legal Services entertain a motion I was going to say move to approve second thank you discussion no discussion uh all those in favor say I I I thank you approved 13.2 13.2 is the second reading and approval of the cchs new course uh proposal for AP business with personal finance and this is the new course uh proposal the ministration requests board approval um this course is proposed as a potential replacement for finite math which has experienced declining enrollment and is not being offered this school year I'll move it second any discussion all those in favor say I I I approved 13.3 13.3 is the second reading and approval of the cchs new course approval for AP Psychology and we request approval this is a college level elective course it's uh it's a full year where students um are able to study the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes including topics such as cognitive development learning versus ity and mental health and they get to apply research methods and this course is unique again in in the terms that it's a year-long course but it also has prerequisites that all students are required to take so it's an easy um entry point entertainment a motion I'll move to approve second any discussion all those in favor say I I I 14.1 this item is to approve or participation the delinquent property tax financing program for 2026 through 2028 through this program The District assigns deliquent property tax receivables to a joint Powers Authority jpa which then secures funding and provides a district with an upfront payment including a premium this premium is additional unrestricted Revenue to the district does not reduce state aid and comes to a no cost or financial liability to the district historically this program has generated over 400,000 in additional funding for ccusd approval of this resolution allows us to continue participating and benefit from this program I'll entertain a motion I'll move the item second any discussion all those in favor say I I I thank you I um uh 14.2 this item is to approve repairs to the high school gym floor following water damage caused by the November 2020 flooding the scope includes sanding the hardwood floor applying Cedar and multiple finish codes and restriping the game lines and Center logo the total cost is 50,000 and 190 funded through general fund and restricted we did submit an insurance claim however damaged due to excessive rainfall is not covered typically your insurance covers certain accidental accidents such as pipe versus internal system there is 14.4 sorry this item is to approve transitioning Our Workers Compensation Program from slim jpa to directly joining the Pips pool previously we were part of a 6 member jpa that participated um in Pips with 1 number leaving jpa board decided to move directly into the same Pips 4 we are already part of the attached joint Powers agreement outlines how Pips operates as a collaborative program that provides workers compensation coverage claims Administration and Risk Management Services for member districts they have 250 plus districts under them the resolution before you authorizes our membership in Pips effective July 1 2026 and also your designates are representative to the program as a board as part of the board this transition maintains the same level of coverage and services with no impact to employees while continuing access to the safety and risk management resources it also allows for a smooth and seamless session because we are with the same pool already and with no physical disruption I'll entertain a motion move to approve second discussion all those in favor say I I I approved 14.5 this item is to approve the DSA plan review fuse fees for the eldering Kahn Elementary School in housing project and and this is similar to the elmano project that we discussed before both will be paid out of the measure e and it cost 9,640 I will move it second all very generous contribution to the district funds um and I don't know if any staff would like to speak a little bit to what this $50,000 is intended to be used for so Panther Partners informed us beginning of the year after seeing our budget situation that they wanted to help the district and they offered 50,000 but their preference was to spend the money what the district is pending on behalf of Middle School to be paid out of this fund so that will relieve $50,000 to the general fund that was their requests so we identified some items and we shared with them and then they sent a check right away yeah do you happen to have any of those items just uh handy on the spot but it'll be paid for um some of the extra hours that we pay are substituted costs that we would pay not a permanent position it will be paid because of 1 time money we would use it for some of those things okay that's fantastic yeah I just wanted to acknowledge that and thank them um who whoever may be listening for discussion as well looks like oh good okay sure I'll second okay um we had some concerns about this that were emailed to us uh just namely that these Services may not necessary I'm wondering if we can address that a little bit I know I had flagged this um pre meeting if you want to just explain to us in the audience why we're why we're having this contract on the agenda tonight I'd be happy to so um while it while it is true we we have several programs that help run our information systems behind the scenes we have Aries which is 1 of our main ones and then parent Square which is our communication and edu climber that helps with some Data Tracking each of those provide very important functionalities to what we do behind the scenes with um data and communication um but they're they're limited when it comes to attendance tracking and we've been without this piece where we've always had this this piece with the attendance tracking and it's concerning because a lot of um our well all of our sites are having to do this manually and it's a mandated uh um requirement that we have to follow in terms of attendance letters start letters but also tracking and that is missing currently and it's being done manually which is been a huge burden especially with our our smaller office um teams in the last year so um none of the the programs that I just listed are designed to manage the intervention process either and so with our mtss teams and our AI this is it becomes an important piece and process um neither do they automate uh automate the Mandate at reporting and um the the attendance plus does man uh does automate these mandate attendance letters also there distribution and it also tracks them and then to uh Ron Leon uh Ron um Leon's point is that it does assist in the operation of independent study which is a which is a nice automated piece so it fills the the critical operation Gap that we've been missing this year by assigning students and staff and tracking interventions over time by ensuring those consistent follow-throughs across the sites in addition and more importantly to um automating this for for our staff and and to have timely information the other layer of is it in the past is we were paying well over about $18 per student with our previous system and it came with all these bells and whistles which isn't needed this system gives us exactly what our what we need with about 2 dollars fifty cents per student okay great so it sounds like we're we're actually saving some money moving to this system and also saving some time of people that otherwise would have to do this this work manually um so that they could potentially focus on other things rather than than having to go through and do the work manually right and a good return on investment and not only the time management piece but um additionally in terms of the independent study and our Ada okay yeah and I mean I want to just acknowledge to the community members that brought this to our attention and and staff as well um you know definitely appreciate that appreciate the the thorough review of the things that we're taking up and and the feedback um is that really helps those of us who are not necessarily In The Weeds on this on a regular basis thanks can I ask a question to follow up I had actually uh asked uh Dr Hinrich a similar question about you know what does this do that our current system does and as you acknowledge we've kind of been down this road before with a platform that was supposed to generate letters and help with attendance and do a lot of things um I'm completely satisfied with your explanation of it but I would say can we over the next year I don't know track the impact that this is having um so that when we get to Renewal next year we can actually look back and see be able to say oh because we adopted uh the the attendance plus we were able to do X Y and Z 100% And and I was wanting to do some tracking but because everything's done manually this year on other layers of the data and I couldn't so hopefully that that will lend a helping hand to to not only tracking how well it's working for us but also the other pieces to attendance and giving us more timely information so we can intervene okay great thank you um similarly I know I had asked about this and you noted the substantial savings compared to the I think you said uh over 100,000 we spent in the previous system um I do want to again thank people for sharing ideas with us about how we can be more efficient um this is something we should always be encouraging and it helps us ask good question so um keep throwing those ideas at us within reason uh just you know and uh I I would like to at some point you know see us you know show appreciation for those in the district who are trying to save us money and um you know doing things like this to help us be more efficient with what we have because I think it's it's something that we're not always we're not always showing appreciation for and during these difficult times it's it can be reinforcing to have all those in favor I I thank you uh moving on any future your agenda items we do have our hands full the next couple months I mean at some point in the distant future maybe at this point it would be nice to talk a little bit about um kind of a district Tech in general and maybe the possibility of setting up like a tech committee I mean after we're past the cell phone convention here um so I I have also made some suggestions about having a committee to address mic on what I thought I turned it off okay there you go I would also like to uh see a a some addressing of our use of AI uh and uh guidance for students as of how of use of AI um and this is also something that we can possibly do in the future doesn't have to be done now but I know uh the city does you know some low-cost Awards to thank those in the city who helped us save money or improve our environment maybe at some point we can look into doing something like that for our District staff as well to show our appreciation for their for the work out specific departments that save the district money yeah I mean I would also just add um a broken record but ninth grade honors I think we want to talk about our ninth grade uh English course of study it's been pending okay thank you uh went to find some statements from some folks that did um so uh Tina Miko is a longtime resident of Culver City and and the Culver City sister city committees president from July 1993 to June 1994 um and from the co-president Craig shown bomb he said if Tina wanted something to happen it usually did she kept after me to join the board of sister cities and after that thought I should be president from the orphanages we supported in Mexico to the local events in the community she gave time money and love to all my heartfelt condolences to her family especially her sister a dear friend and artist and all of our mutual friends near her hometown area of Capo dando in Italy and then also from Barbra honig uh Tina was a force of nature No 1 Messina Malica I'm so sad to hear that she left us and I know she's cooking up some amazing lasagna for rccs CC folks who are in heaven with her Tina continues to live in our hearts and in the many programs she helped initiate and support um so Nina's
