actions taken by the board in closed session we do not have any public hearings and so 5.1 superintendent do we have any changes yes uh good evening board president Laredo members of the board cabinet Community for this evening we actually uh want to uh mention for agenda item 13 6 approval of contract with aerial restaurant equipment in the amount of 287,522 and 88 cents to replace Culver City High School cafeteria serving lines equipment we want to uh let everybody know we did have uh an attachment but in in uh posting the agenda the attachment didn't get placed on there so we do have copies up there for the board we also have copies in the back for members of the public so it's the final agreement and we'll have the final agreement also attached as part of the the minutes for this designed to recognize our students who demonstrate characteristics and behaviors from their schools positive behavior interventions and supports otherwise known as PBIS each school's PBIS Model reinforces A positive School climate through adherence to the safety guidelines positive behavior and social emotional development examples from the Culver City Unified School District's PBIS model include but aren't limited to demonstrating respect valuing diversity striving to do their best collaborating with peers modeling good examples showing empathy and inherence to safety norms and therefore students from each school will be recognized this evening in accordance with their respective School sites PBIS model we're going to begin this evening with our students from Lab bayona we're going to have Alina villa villa Roi please come on up otherwise known as Nia come on down so Nia consistently demonstrates kindness respect and inclusivity in her daily interactions with both peers and adults she approaches challenges with a positive attitude works well with others and shows empathy and support towards classmates helping create a welcoming classroom environment laiona is academically motivated student who consistently takes her learning seriously she challenges herself by attempting work above grade level she asked thoughtful questions when she needs clarification and demonstrates a strong desire to grow and improve ryland's determination and dedication make her a wonderful example for her peers and great things are ahead for her congratulations Ryland our tracing classroom congratulations Ezekiel our next rising star is Veronica Murray from Farragut Elementary School come on up Veronica Veronica demonstrate strong accountability for her learning and has shown tremendous growth throughout kindergarten she takes pride in her work is growing in confidence and contributes positively during ing group activities while building kind relationships with classmates Veronica also shows strong self-control by making bafo and responsible decisions throughout the school day congratulations Veronica and next we go to Lynn Lynwood how with their student council students if I could have the Lynnwood house student council come on down we have jelly or Leila white Henry gimpel West Williams and summer Desmond these Lynnwood house student council students are being recognized for their hard work and dedication throughout the year they have demonstrated creativity ity leadership and kindness will helping organize school activities and fundraisers a highlight of the year was a student council's Earth Day celebration where classes participated in a campus-wide cleanup and contributed to a collective School Barrel thank you Lewin how student council for making a positive impact on our school community pause for a moment to get um a photo shoot of our elementary students so parents if you'd like to come on up or we're going to okay we just future by investing in their health safety and well-being we are investing in a stronger future for our community and whereas all students have the right to have their physical emotional and mental health needs safely supported while at school and whereas students today face Health needs requiring skills compassionate and responsive care within the school setting and whereas School nurses play a vital role in supporting student health Wellness attendance and academic success while also promoting safe and healthy learning environments and whereas School nurses serve as trusted health professionals and Partners to students families School staff and healthcare providers by promoting Wellness responding to medical needs and improving Health outcomes for children and whereas School nurses support the social emotional well-being of students and our important members of school-based support and mental health teams and whereas School nurses demonstrate professionalism compassion expertise and dedication each day while caring for the students and families of the Culver City Unified School District and whereas School nurses make a positive difference every day by helping are ensuring the strength promise and progress of our community for tomorrow and whereas the covered in flight school district is committed to fostering a culture of diversity inclusion understanding and respect for all students and whereas CC's core beliefs affirm that every person deserves to be treated with dignity that honoring diversity strengthens our community and that belonging is essential to learning and growth and whereas Harvey Milk on May 22nd 1930 was a pioneering Civic leader who became 1 of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States and the first openly gay person elected to public office in California and whereas after settling in San Francisco Harvey Milk organized fearlessly in response to widespread discrimination and lack of representation putting coalitions with labor and civil rights leaders and advocating for the principle that freedom and dignity must extend to all people regardless of identity and whereas Harvey Monk's leadership helped Advanced critical civil rights protections including his opposition in California's 1978 proposition 6 the Briggs initiative which would have barred lgbtq individuals from working in public schools and other public institutions and whereas did in 1977 to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Harvey Milk served as a strong advocate for anti-discrimination protections and essential community services such as affordable housing and childcare for Working Families demonstrating a commitment to improving life for all residents and whereas Harvey MC family stated I have tasted freedom I will not give up that which I have tasted reflecting his unwavering belief in Justice equality and human dignity and whereas although his time in public office was tragically cut short Harvey MC's Legacy endures as a powerful reminder of Civic Courage the importance of representation and the responsibility to stand against Injustice in all forms and whereas Harvey Milk Day observed annually on May 22nd on Earth's life service and lasting impact and encourages reflection on the ongoing importance of equality inclusion and Civic engagement now therefore we the course part of education do hereby Proclaim May 22nd 2026 as Harvey McKay and encourage students staff and the community to reflect on how much Legacy and the enduring importance of Courage equity and service to others thank you 6.4 Proclamation and recognition of May as Asian-American native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this month we celebrate the Asian-American native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander aanhpi communities who have contributed to American history whereas data from the most updated US Census Bureau for the city of Culver City indicates 19.8% identifies as Asian 2% identify as native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders and whereas according to 2025 California data Quest asian-americans Filipinos and Pacific Islanders made up 1 1. 8 is 2 or more races in the ccusd student population and whereas this District's core beliefs a firm that all individuals deserve to be treated with respect that honoring diversity strengthens our community and that a sense of belonging is essential learning and growth and whereas Culver City Unified School District is committed to embedding culturally responsive programs and learning experiences throughout the year that uplift the history's traditions and contributions of diverse communities and whereas CC USD proudly supports 1 of the Region's early Japanese immersion programs which begins in elementary school continues through middle school and culminates in high school with opportunities for students to earn the state seal of bi literacy and where a ccusd value the importance of community and representation and is home to student LED and parent LED Affinity groups across all School levels that Foster connection identity and belonging and whereas this may during AA and HPI heritage month we recognize the history and achievements of aanhpi and in the midst of pain and fear we also reflect on the tradition of leadership resilience and courage shown by aanhpi communities and recommit to the struggle for AA and HPI equity and whereas present day inequities faced by a nhpi communities are rooted in our nation's history of exclusion discrimination racism and xenophobia against asian-americans a nhpi have endured a long history of Injustice including the paycheck of 1875 the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 the incarceration of Japanese American citizens during World War II and the targeting of South asian-americans especially those who are Muslim Hindu or Sikh after the national tragedy of 9/11 and now therefore we the Culver City School Unified School District board of education do hereby Proclaim as Asian may as Asian-American native Hawaiian Pacific Islander heritage month and call upon communities to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities to celebrate and learn about aanhpi history people and cultures and to support efforts to combat hate towards AA and HPI by the by providing instructional resources relevant research resources and promising practices to make us significant impact on the lives and futures of AA and hbi students thank you 6 5 thank you this month we celebrate Jewish America sorry Proclamation and recognition of May as Jewish American heritage month this month we celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month honoring the history culture resilience and contribution of Jewish Americans who have helped shape our schools communities State and Nation whereas the district's core belief affirm that all individuals deserve to be treated with respect honoring diversity strengthens our community and that the sense of belonging is essential to learning and growth and whereas Jewish American heritage month is celebrated in May of each year recognize the contributions and achievements of Jewish Americans to the United States and whereas United States is home to over 7.5 million Jewish Americans with California having the second largest jewish-american population in the United States and with Los Angeles and the Greater Los Angeles region being home to the second largest Jewish American community in the United States including approximately 740,000 jewish-american households representing diverse religious cultural ethnic and ancestral identity as well as a range of practices and observances whereas the Culver City Unified School District recognizes that Jewish identity is multifaceted and may Encompass religion culture ancestry ethnicity heritage share traditions and whereas Culver City Unified School District takes pride in providing educational and uh and cultural opportunities throughout the year that Foster understanding celebrate diversity and promote appreciation for the many communities represented within our schools and whereas bias and discrimination including anti-Semitism and anti-jewish hate negatively impact the well-being and sense of belonging for diverse communities and our society as a whole and in response in the 2022 3 school year the Culver City Unified School District adopted a resolution denying anti-Semitism and continues to implement board policies administrative regulations and practices that support Jewish students and families as well as policies that support observing cultural and religious traditions and holidays and whereas ccusd values the advocacy leadership and contribution of Jewish staff student uh staff families students community members and who serving important roles in our schools Parent organizations District committees and the broader community where as Jewish American Heritage is a part of the broader story of immigration struggle resilience and respect for tradition that has been the Cornerstone of the American experience and whereas Jewish American History Month provides the opportunity to recognize and honor the enduring contribution of Jewish Americans in the field of Education science medicine civil rights Public Service arts and culture business and community leadership now therefore we the Culver City Unified School District do hereby Proclaim May 2026 Jewish American heritage month and honors the achievements contributions and cultural heritage of Jewish American Americans and their continued impact on our community and our nation inflammation and recognition of May 2026 is National Emmy mental health awareness month and student Mental Health Awareness Week May 11th uh through 15 2026 whereas the National Alliance on Mental uh illness recognizes 2026 Mental Health Awareness Month theme stigma grows in silence Healing Begins and Community highlighting the importance of open dialogue connection and Community Support in promoting mental wellness and reducing stigma and whereas the Culver City Unified School District recognizes that mental health is an essential component of the overall health and well-being affecting how individuals think feel act learn build relationships and navigate daily life and whereas ccusd is committed to supporting the mental emotional and behavioral Wellness of students in order to foster a safe inclusive and supportive learning environments and whereas mental health challenges among children and adolescents can significantly impact academic achievement emotional regulation relationships attendance and overall School engagement and whereas early ident medication intervention and access to appropriate Mental Health Services and supports are vital to promoting wellness and helping students Thrive both in and outside of the classroom and whereas ccusd recognizes that access to coordinated mental health res resources Wellness supports and school and Community Based Services are important components of the support of Education environment and student support systems that help address students social emotional behavioral and mental well-being and whereas Mental Health Awareness Month serves as an opportunity to reduce stigma encourage help-seeking behaviors Foster resilience and promote meaningful conversations surrounding mental health and wellness within schools in the broader community and whereas student Mental Health Awareness Week of May 11th through 15 2026 further highlights the importance of advocacy education and community support for student mental health and well-being and whereas for California uh Association of school counselors the official tag for student mental health awareness week is hashtag Capital California Ca for student mental health all 1 Word promoting awareness and advocacy for student mental health and well-being now therefore we the governing board of the Culver City Unified School District do hereby Proclaim May 26th as mental health awareness month and May 11th through 15 2026 as student mental health awareness week and recognize the invaluable contributions of school-based health professionals and all those who support the well-being of students throughout the district thank you join us in the well first we have do we have our nurses here today with us or no no okay if uh our CCMS GSA you hello I'm here today um a director of the Culver City Education Foundation and I'm here today to uh thank our community for coming together for a wonderful taste of Culver City fundraising event uh it was on Sunday May 3rd and and truly lived up to its slogan of good friends great food and give back and I think we um achieved all 3 of those goals uh really want to thank the community for coming out uh to come together and enjoy each other enjoy the best of what covers city has in terms of our food uh and our restaurants uh and and giving back to the schools thank you to all the uh school board members who were there in attendance I really appreciate you coming out to support the event as well as the district leadership who were there as well uh and I want to give a a special uh shout out to the restaurants who who were there they donated all their food and all their time and we just couldn't do the uh do the this event without them uh and also I wanted to take a moment to publicly recognize our event sponsors these businesses um are again what make the event successful so I'm going to uh read off their name are presenting sponsor of course was Amazon MGM Studios our all right thank you next is uh t Johnson good evening my name is Tamara de Johnson I'm the mom of 2 daughters El Marino Language School a daughter at the middle school and am the volunteer host mom to CC usd's 1 and only change student who is a junior at Culver City High School and tonight I'd like to speak about our life-changing and life-enhancing experience with her Sophia is a junior uh and she's from Madrid Spain she is the first exchange student hosted by ccusd in roughly 20 years uh a year and a half ago that's not real right that time no ignore that okay a year and a half ago I learned that by happenstance that our district didn't host exchange students at the high school school and I thought that was very confusing with our uh District's wonderful reputation regarding its love for diversity and culture so I learned a few things as I looked into it and sort of dug as much as I could I contacted over 30 of our local um neighboring school districts and of them Culver City was the only 1 that did not open its doors to either J1 and or F1 Visa students I reached out to both Leo and the Department of Education and both of them were in full support encouraging Public School to host specifically J1 students at least and the practice in our own districts seem just to uh continue out of out of habit for years and years so I set out to change that and I'd like to thank the district for its shift in decision with support from board members specifically board member Carlson on board member Laredo with help from board member lachman and former superintendent Brian Lucas as Sophia was welcome to the beginning of this school year as the district's First Student in our new era of exchange students in Culver City we picked her up from LAX 2 days before school and since then she hit the ground running with the All-American high school experience from walking into the school thinking it was like a movie out you with the uh with the band and the student government welcoming her with the cheerleaders she thought she was in a movie and from then she's had the All-American teenage experience from participating in aba's dance and theater taking an AP class joining the school swim team other wonderful activities I should mention she's a straight A student and she has sent our pride she's also served the community from cleanups at the beach the school the wetlands um to volunteering with the Arts sharing her culture with students um who speak Spanish and are learning in the dual immersion Schools she's quickly become part of our family uh she is wonderful we loved her a big sister to my kids and she's also made lifelong friends she shared her own culture while gain gaining a love for her second home here in Culver City and my home my hope is that we continue this practice of opening our doors to the world welcoming further students from abroad and continue opening it to exchange students our community is stronger and better for it thank you so much for your help with this thank you um Dr Tano hello everybody um hello esteemed board members and District leadership uh I love days like today it's so cute to see the little kids come up and get all the recognitions and it kind of reminds us uh how wonderful it is and how lucky we are to be in this district and in this community uh and it also kind of reminds us of the importance of our students and providing the things that they need um I am a 20-year cchs math teacher Uh current math TLP coach former math department chair and since 2014 I played a role in creating the master schedule so I have a lot of experiences experienced throughout the years with our different programs I wanted to come to share with you the department is currently facing because of the position cuts last month uh it was voted to cut a math position and we are already feeling it that's 5 class sections uh and this is after the math position we lost last year which is another 5 sections at the time we didn't know how we were going to make it work but we did with a few extra 1-time 120 position with those gone we are now down 12 sections and we just found out that my TLP uh class got cut so now we're down a total of 13 class sections um please ponder that uh for the first time I'm feeling uh a little bit of fear for the detrimental effects that it will have on our programs we cut the algebra Support classes in uh exchange for a smaller class sizes but those sizes are increasing year-over-year we started at 16 moved up to 18 and now we're looking at 20 with no guarantees that the increases will stop uh we cut our math Chiron program which supports Algebra 1 Algebra 2 and avid this means we cut all of the math interventions because those are the interventions the Chiron did we cut the math teacher coaching support which is now gone so literally nothing uh and so importantly we will have a difficult time making our master schedule work we in the math department are numbers people with all the cuts I don't see how we're going to have enough sections to fill the need so I suspect that every class section will be maxed out so I understand the decisions are needed to be made for the greater good but I'm here now to ask for your help to make up for the damages that our students and teachers do not shoulder the burden alone so we need your support to come up with Creative Solutions and make decisions that will help our cchs math department Thrive whether it be bringing back a few more 120 positions or better yet bring back um our math teacher even as a part-timer um I don't know the details of how the budget works but what I do know is that we need our superintendent pushing hard for us business services to be creative and we need you board members to really have our back uh thank you to Dr Heinrich and the edge services for being our cheerleaders and we need all of your leadership now more than ever our admin will come to you in the coming week for Solutions and requests and I urge that you consider our needs so thank you again for all that you do for our district and I believe that we can do this together thank you thank you and then we have 1 comment online Melissa Sanders good evening um first I'm excited to hear about the exchange program I would think with sister cities um that could really begin to flourish that's cool um really bummed to hear that uh our wonderful Santa is leaving us I think that'll be a hard a hard hit for ccusd so um I wish you well in your new adventure but uh this is going to create a a new fund problem for us to figure out um the other things that I would like to whoever's listening um if you have signed for the ballot measure for the 48 cents uh I suggest you throw that money at CCF today figure out how many square feet you have and if it's a thousand send them 480 today um because God knows the school needs it and it's it's not going to work until you know so 2 year 2 years away but more importantly uh I assume at this point that all of you on the board and District leadership have seen the video from the last school board meeting that a lawyer clipped and posted on X AKA Twitter uh that has gotten over 40 9,000 views and if you haven't I suggest you do um I suggest that any of my legal stuff that is still outstanding be looked at I am getting people communicating with me about it and we might want to come up with some kind of resolution basically it sounds like you guys have not learned your lesson and I would really like it at some point for you guys to realize if you don't like something somebody says it doesn't make it hate speech it doesn't mean you get to cut someone off it doesn't mean that you get to cut off anything and the fact that you have not learned that lesson yet doesn't bode well for you so I am here tonight to remind everyone that we we are Citizens Community members parents sometimes staff sometimes grandparents whomever it is we have every right to speak we have every right to say what we believe to be true we have every right to speak the facts and when you take your supposed power and try to silence us it will not work so I will continue to work for what is best for this community what is best for our kids whether you like it or not but the fact is we just had a math teacher talking about increasing class sizes that won't work for him because of all the other cuts well when you lose them dollars per student head you might want to look at all the students you might want to do an audit and maybe we would be better off with less kids getting better education getting more attention from their teacher making those smaller class sizes a reality sooner rather than later point of order that would be best um yeah the your time has expired Miss Sanders oh well I can't see the time where I'm on my phone it is on the zoom I can I know but when I speak the video goes away okay so thank you okay I think that's I feel like today's rising stars are tomorrow's ASB leaders um so congratulations to all of them I also want to acknowledge all the many identities that we are recognizing this month um I feel like the multiplicity of identities that belong in both this district and this country are what makes us great and I am very glad that we recognize them um I also want to congratulate the Ed foundation for the taste of Culver event I was lucky enough to volunteer it was a great event um I got to eat a cookie covered with cereal which was delicious um so that was a great event too I also want to remind everybody that next week um the 17th through the 23rd is going to be classified Appreciation Week um I will say that I got a lot of love last week during teacher appreciation week so thank you till the El ring con Community who also recognize classified but if you are a Community member or a student who has not been able to thank your classified team next week's your chance so we look forward to that um also I just want to shout out especially our Mental Health Health Counselors um I hope we can maintain the great team that we have that is all I will say on that um I will also just let everybody know that next week I'm very excited I am going to be participating um in a lobbying event in Sacramento the California Teachers Association which is Ace's parent organization does a President's Day of lobbying and I'm very excited to go on behalf of our Union and our district and come back with Untold riches that's what I'm hoping so uh wish me luck um last but not least the bigger issue I've been thinking about lately is this time of year and I think we all know that this feels like a Sprint there's a lot there's a lot going on we're kind of focused on wrapping up but I've also had a lot of conversations with people in leadership at both different departments and at different sites where we're kind of starting to talk about next year what a revisioning for next year and 1 of the things I was thinking about for our district overall and an ask I have for you as our board members um is to do that kind of big thinking too I know you all have heard back about the weeds and I know you've had conversations about the Weeds about the board being in the weeds and I think we would all agree that some of that criticism and some of that feedback is Justified um so if I could offer an ask for the next year and the years to come is that you as a board focus on the big picture again we have a great team we have a strong cabinet I'm sure we will continue to have a strong cabinet uh we have amazing labor leaders and employees we have a great Community we have great students we have a lot of experts especially in the educational field who can do this the weeds that's what we're all here for and so I'm asking you to do the visioning for us we need to know what we're working towards we need to know what is the vision what are we who are we who are we trying to be um my kids I have an eighth grader and I have a junior in high school and so they both took us history our finishing US History this year and my daughter was studying for the AP test and 1 of the parts of it was talking a little bit about the space race of the 1960s in the exploration part of it and if I can make a very heavy-handed analogy I would say this the president at the time the United States government told NASA what he wanted to do we wanted to get into orbit we wanted to get to the moon but he didn't go down with the computers and he didn't go down with the astronauts and he didn't tell them how to do it he just told him what he wanted to do and they had a very very brilliant team who made those things happen and so if I can ask of you to do the same tell us where we're going and let us get us there that's all I have thank you Mr long on behalf of ccft please good evening everyone so first um I wanted to just um talk about the uh citizens um initiative to bring a partial tax in so um we had another yet successful weekend of canvasing um currently we are around 3400 signatures um well toward our goal of 4000 which is actually more than we need but giving us a little cushion um the continuing efforts of the volunteers of the committee um are just making this work um people in this committee are just putting in long hours um getting out there organizing you know talking to neighbors and it has been good it's been really great to get out there and the community and talk to people about this um why this particular parcel tax is needed um what this will do how this could be game-changing for ccusd um and this is kind of the the moment we need so um I would continue to urge people to um go to our website www.covercity.net about this citizens LED initiative um teaming up with labor here in Culver City to make this a reality to help ccusd so just very proud to be a part of that especially as we you know here like Dr Tano today talking about cuts and things like that in ways that we can improve this and make improvements and that generally is through that unfortunately California grossly underfunded do have to return to uh communities to help but um you know kind of going with the Mantra of the citizens group um stronger schools are stronger homes and that's kind of the message there um and we just really really appreciate the community who has come out and uh supported this initiative and continue to look for support uh to get this on the ballot in November so people can make a choice to help Culver City Schools I just want to once again thank that group on the steering group for all they're doing with this and um all of our volunteers some of our teachers tons and tons of parents um staff we even got to CFT out there this week to do a little bit of canvasing uh with us and we hope to get a lot more um so please check out our website for more information ways that you can help the next big events is all available on www.covercity.net any of our social media platforms Facebook uh Instagram or X um second just 1 more kind of message to the community so we did hold a um General membership meeting where we invited candidates who are running for school board we did record that and as a service from ccft to the community of Culver City we have put that publicly on our YouTube channel uh for members of the Culver City Community to vote so again you can go to our um Culver City Federation of teachers YouTube channel and you can see that video that we um held with candidates that are running so that again that is a service of ccft um to the community that we'd like to provide as well too oh thank you for all the people that participated in all of our members that were there as well um to do this event so we really appreciate that um just appreciation just of all the recognitions and proclamations it's nice as a history teacher to um sit there and hear things um about Harvey Milk which I just taught about a week ago um as we finished up our 1970 unit um to hear you know things like the page act and Japanese internment and things that we taught earlier in the year Chinese Exclusion Act so was kind of refreshing I don't get to talk as a teacher much but to kind of hear those types of thing like oh yeah my we learn that in class the thing that we're talking about right now so I was uh very appreciative of those so I wanted to take the rest of the time to address an issue that um has kind of been bothering me and um we even ask candidates about that at the um at our forum and that's the continued attack on student on permit I've heard numerous times sitting here in this chamber people blaming permit students from everything from traffic woes to our funding issues to Chronic absenteeism without no evidence to support that and I know we live in an era now when people just say things with no evidence that's kind of like the new Norm right now but I can tell you that for example with attendance data we do not segregate out our attendance data by permit and non-permit students these attacks are simply wrong and as a Sharon is a union leader we support every student that attends these schools and that's a period the majority of our staff because there is an affordability crisis to live in a place like Culver City the majority already of our staff and the majority of the a staff and probably a lot of our management even do not live in Culver City cannot afford to live in Culver City and our students are here on permits too these attacks need to stop and I encourage every board member every Cabinet member when you hear it shut it down this should not be acceptable for a tax on students who by the way have no control over those circumstances either I find it despicable that this happens and I call on everyone to push back against the attacks on our students on permits or the ones that reportedly are here illegally again no evidence of that and a inconsistent 2020 census 1 of the worst census we have ever isn't that proof thank you superintendent's report thank you board president Laredo good evening members of the board cabinet staff and community uh this evening for the superintendent's report we do have a lot to celebrate so if I can get the next slide up I want to start off by highlighting our amazing speech and debate students who have been competing uh it seems almost like if every single month they're in some kind of competition but I do want to highlight the event where our elected officials from local governments went head to head with them with a uh old classic debate style at the Village Wells I do want to give a shout out to the Village wealth for uh helping us sponsor this event to support our students and so it was really entertaining I know it was streaming live and so if you didn't get a chance uh to see it I'm pretty sure you can find it so I want to give a shout out to Miss Gina pitsky who's been advocating for our students so that they can make it to National so we'll be watching their progress also want to highlight uh Sony pictures for their involvement at El Ricon I know myself and the cabinet and Miss what other were able to attend as they were busy painting the murals and they went up pretty quickly I mean that's an example of just 1 I know in the Elven con newsletter uh principal and I was able to put a lot more pictures and so we were able to highlight this as well so shout out to Sony pictures for supporting our school and I also want to thank the Culver City Education Foundation I know uh Miss Wendy the hammer was here earlier talking about all of the success and the support and I know they had shared that they had raised 211,000 so just a wonderful event and of course thank you to the amazing businesses that are in the community here our district office and I know I do frequent a lot of those establishments so I'm going to be putting those that did in support on blast making sure they do show up and support our district so I want to give thanks to the foundation for all of their support next slide this time of the year also is an amazing time because we also want to highlight our National Merit Scholars and in our district we have 14 that's that's a pretty big number for the size of our district so that is a big deal I know we'll be uh basically sharing this because this shows that students in Culver City uh High School do succeed and could achieve at various high levels because this puts them at the top 1% to 3% of us High School seniors Nation so do want to thank our students for their dedication and their commitment to their studies and also to all of the teachers at Culver City High School that really helped support them and really everybody else in the system that was responsible for the students from preschool elementary and middle school as you know in our district all roads lead to the middle and high schools so want to give that shout out to anybody and everybody who had something to do with their success next slide please also want to shout out to the Culver City Middle School athletic teams I was just amazed I know when I was looking at their newsletter I was like wow they have a Triple Crown here 3 School sports CMS girls basketball team boys volleyball team and boys lacrosse team all were League champions so I want to thank the support that they're providing for our students to be engaged in areas outside of the classroom so thank you so much CCMS next side please I do want to provide an update with respect to the budget I know we are all anxiously awaiting the governor's May budget revision which will be released on May 14th and so I know I sent out District letter through the California school boards Association they actually had a a template where we were able to plug in and edit and also put how this settle up is actually impacting our district funds so I was able to personalize it for our district and off it went and I got a response amazing I got a response from the governor's office so I thought that was interesting so I thought I included in here that hopefully they are listening and I want to thank all of the community members and our board members that have been advocating as well as our uh associations because they've been doing advocacy work as well so it takes all of us basically sounding the alarm to the governor to let the governor know that we need those funds as I have shared before that amount is about 5 million to uh our district so we are continuing the advocacy around that uh given in past years at the budget is typically uh shared by that date on May 14th it's very common for the governor to release the started a few days earlier so we'll be watching out for that if it happens and we'll be actively looking to see what are those impacts uh and as part of this part of the uh slide presentation I just want to highlight a few upcoming dates that relate to our budget we have our special board meeting May 19th with really focuses on lcap those lcap actions that the board will be provided input and feedback as well as any members of the public and also our board meeting on June 9th which is typically the El Cap and budget presentation to the board and then on June 23rd the El cup and budget approval occurs so that's what's in store for these next few days so we got to keep uh advocating so that we can get those 5 million that belong to US based on the California Constitution proposition 98 uh at this time I do want to um provide an opportunity for us to celebrate the national Arab American heritage this month which was in April and we did have the board approve it and the proclamations are assigned as we shared earlier we had a little miscommunication on on that but I believe we do have a student here uh if I could have the the board uh please come to the well so that we can provide the uh Proclamation and also time for a photo moment if Maya Abu Bakr if you can please come up let's give her a round of applause all right and uh with that that concludes the superintendent's report we can have the student representative support starting with the Middle School there we go uh good evening board president Laredo members of the board and superintendent the Jimenez this week and the following weeks are very busy ones at CCMS this Saturday May 16th we have our eighth grade formal ASB is continuing our work the work on the event uh that runs from 5 to 8 in the evening the theme is May 9th in Hollywood and during the event ASB has also created a poll for students to pick the most outstanding students at our school and dinner at the event includes tacos and ice cream also during the month of May ASB is selling Medieval Times tickets for seventh graders the field trip is an incentive for students with excellent citizenship and work habits along with the formal and ticket sales ASB is hosting Asian-American native Hawaiian Pacific Islander month students will have the opportunity to participate special pause sessions and lunchtime activities our celebratory events include origami and Japanese culture day Sudoku puzzle day Pokemon day a special pause session on Hawaiian leis henna tattoos at lunch K-pop Tuesday and a live concert at lunch by our very own Filipino student band The left-handed fish thank you very much hello and good evening um president Laredo vice president Guerrero members of the board um earlier this year the green New Deal a club at Clover City High School attended the Earth Day Festival it was a great success having kids write down on Leafs 1 Thing They wish to do to better the environment it was an amazing way to see how our future Generations will work to better our our World um now on to my pres preferential votes um the course outline under 9.2 is something I agree with as it shows a complex understanding of the English language for 10th graders and a rigorous curriculum that will benefit many students but I would like to add a copy yet often students who feel they don't have the resources to deal with hard courses don't push themselves and attend those courses this leads to less diverse classrooms not not representative of the diverse school we take pride in I propose we make an effort to encourage taking this class to a lot of the students at Temple City High School because with this amazing teachers I know a lot of these students can achieve great success in these classes I spoke to a particular English teacher who about honors English 10 AP English Language and Composition and English College Prep 10 and she remarks on the register discussion she has seen as students aren't separated by thinking that they can and cannot that is why it is so important to fully integrate this class with students from diverse backgrounds I hope the message of importance in this matter is reflected as we want our students to receive the richest education as as the things they learned in these classrooms will reflect in the world um the rest of them are agree except for 3.6 which I have said disagree um I don't see where we have the funds for this expense um but I will give a list to board member lachman thank you hello board members uh here's my student report for the evening last week was teacher appreciation week and I just wanted to take some time to express my gratitude for the teachers at Culver City the hard work of you all does not go unnoticed and I'm so glad to have these teachers at Culver be the ones raising the Future Leaders currently we are reviewing ASP applications with interviews taking place this this month we are planning to let in around 8 to 11 new ASB members we will also be opening applications in the fall of the next school year to let in more applicants happening June 14th is the annual Powderpuff game this is an event where girl girl Juniors and seniors participate in a flag football game before the game they're also be a tailgate where clubs Sports and organizations will be selling food this will be behind the bleachers at the lacrosse field everyone is invited so please attend thank you uh and my only preferential vote vote is 13.6 yes although it does I do agree with Alexia it does seem like a lot of money over 100 thousands of dollars so that's just my comment on it thank you um and back to public comment for items on the agenda how many cards do we have and how how many do we have online I do not have any cards in person unless um staff has any that they haven't given me okay um and it looks like we have 2 online okay let's give it a second before we close and our 2 uh public comment requests will have 3 minutes we will now close public comment I would suggest also for those who are online to maybe if you can't see the timer to set 1 of your own um there's not really a way other than interrupting you to let you know how much time you have left um so the the 2 that we have online is um it's Melissa Sanders and Joanna Shaman uh Melissa if you want to go ahead no that was quick um I first want to make it very very clear since apparently it's not I in no way am speaking about the kids and using the kids legal permits are 1 thing I am fully keep blaming parents committing a felony uh by Pro fraud sorry excuse me what what item on the agenda is this just in general okay but I'll get to the the honor stuff and everything else I'm just really sick and tired of Ray long trying to liable me okay we we have to keep the comment items on the agenda please thank you all right then we'll deal with the items on the agenda specifically I'm going to let people who know a lot more I was hoping about honors but this honors thing looks like a joke um and I would really really hope that you will start to listen to what the parents and the kids would like out of their academic offerings because apparently that's not happening um I am really concerned that I'm not seeing things like ceiling tiles being replaced or bathrooms being upgraded so when I'm looking at the pose and looking through all of these other things that are being done I am not seeing things that we have been begging for for years still being accomplished and all of this so with all of these other work orders and POS for this things of that nature I mean you're having to redo an entire gym floor which is important but really you should be building a new gym it can't handle an HVAC system to properly ventilate for the kids to and have games and even wow we could rent it out and play games at our own gym and make Revenue so I'm still concerned that I'm looking at things like for the bond measure that are not being done properly that you're still just doing duct tape but you're not looking long term so I'm really very disturbed by the fact that there are things that we have been begging for I mean my kids still in middle school and feels like there's 1 bathroom and when I have to go to the bathroom I run all across campus I mean that's it's so unnecessary with what we now have available to us and please don't tell me that we have to go to the state to get bathrooms up graded or even just cleaned and opened that would be a little bit of a ridiculous comment um I'm concerned about the Chromebooks because last time we bought Chromebooks it was a total boondoggle as well and clearly there was some fiscal mismanagement in that 1 but I'm hoping that Santa has taken the reins on that and I will trust her on her last few weeks here to say the least um and other than that I just you know I really hope that in the next coming weeks considering summer is pretty much a quiet time for you all that you really look and see what this community needs and deserves as a whole and stop ignoring reality stop being in denial and do what's best long term that's what I'm going to say for everything whether it's for honors whether it's for upgrades or anything else this isn't about tomorrow you have to look Beyond okay thank you and that's what we have to do your time is expired um okay next we have Joanna Shaman if you want to go ahead yes can can you all hear me and I will try to set a timer okay um I did want to talk about item 9.2 I want to start by thanking the teachers for putting into action this plan for restoring honors English 10 that was voted on by the board back in November 18th 2025 regarding restoring educational opportunities for our students and this should also be recognized as a UC designated honors class to help our kids be competitive during college admissions and I completely agree with the student board member that we should encourage all students to take advantage of all the available honors and AP classes at our school matching with their interests 1 of the main reasons for bringing back an honors class was to give the students an advanced option that would be an mention of college prep 10 with a more intense experience increased reading and writing that would help prepare them for AP English Lang so The Logical Next Step would be to create a more rigorous version of College Prep English that would allow interested students to do a additional reading and writing tasks but following a similar structure as English 10 that's what we had when we previously had honors English 10 the the curriculum was basically the same as English 10 um but with additional extracurricular reading and more writing and if you look at surrounding schools like MiraCosta uh what you'll see is extensive reading and writing completion of intensive research paper instead 6 months after the board voted on this what we have is something that really looks like the syllabus for ethnic literature 12 if you don't look at just the summary but actually look at the content on the PDF we have units with titles like identity and belonging Justice and moral complexity ethics and Justice so this is almost identical to ethnic literature 12 I actually think that this curriculum would be a perfect fit for a College Prep English 9 that would combine English and ethnic studies requirements as is done in other schools however this doesn't look like honors English tend to me um or to to to the average reader who looks at this curriculum this doesn't seemed like the best preparation for AP English Lang which requires analysis of primarily non-fiction texts analytical and argumentative writing writing structured essays by pursuing this Direction with the proposed curriculum we're again in my opinion putting our Culver High School kids as a disadvantage this content may not attract all students who just want more rigorous reading and writing or who want something different after doing their mandatory ethnic studies in ninth grade and this curriculum may not adequately prepare our students for success in AP Lang in 11th grade so I hope that the board superintendent and director of curriculum will look at what other schools in our area offer and and offer the same opportunities to our Culver City High School students thank you okay thank you that's uh it for the online comments thank you so much uh this week we will be going in order of Miss Carlson followed by Mr lachman Mr Guerrero then Mr Isadora so miss Carlson if you can begin okay sure um my comments tonight will be pretty brief um I know we have had a lot of things on the agenda we're already at after 8 oclock um so I attended a taste of Culver City a little over a week ago uh that was really Lively and fun a great time and just wanted to thank our local businesses and the community for coming out to support our schools and to CCF for planning and organizing that event um also as an El Marino parent of a Japanese immersion student I had the pleasure of attending the Koto noi performance and and watch these students perform at that um that is always a good time and um the Japanese songs it's kind of cool they're they're like the same from year to year so I particularly enjoy the kindergarten song If if you all know which 1 that is um also on Saturday a uh stop by the season end 5K for Girls on the Run of LA County which just celebrated its 20-year anniversary of bringing fun and inspiration to elementary and middle school girls across LA County I was honored to join them as an Alum of the board of directors I was on that from 2014 to 2017 really happy to see the program thriving I'd also love to be able to bring the program to ccusd I know we had talked with a few sites about potentially doing that last year didn't quite materialize but um if you're listening you think your Elementary School would be interested and could feel the team it's about 10 girls or yourself from third to fifth grade uh please feel free to reach out to me I'd be happy to help try to get that moving um and then I also stopped by the co Culver City Car Show to see some uh Sweet Rides and catch up with some friends uh saw some of the parcel tax folks there as well as other local organizations too it was a really gorgeous day in the event was really well attended and then finally just wanted to wish a happy Mother's Day to everybody um I spoke at length last year regarding the history of the holiday and the interest of time I won't repeat that but I hope that all the moms in the district had a really great day on Sunday thank you thank you um uh I want to start out by extending appreciation to my colleagues and those um out there uh in in addition to work we do a school board um as many know I serve as a general counsel for a company that went through an acquisition uh in the last 2 weeks and so it's been incredibly intensive uh uh spending my time but uh uh but as you know the uh we we don't get a lot of money for doing all of this it's a matter of service but appreciate everyone's patience while I was going through all of that I was however able to do a number of wonderful activities uh out there in the community got to cccms Performance of Beauty and the Beast at the frost the costumes were uh amazing um and the singers were incredible I think we all I believe had a great time with the debates um uh and I enjoyed getting my butt kicked by love Miller um uh but I think we all really enjoyed the discussion and seeing their debate skills on display it was it was a a wonderful uh a wonderful opportunity for the community to get together uh I dropped by the Chamber of Commerce um economic Outlook Summit uh the business partners that we have in the community that help fund our schools uh are the businesses we attract in here into the community and so hearing a lot about what was planned with respect to the world cup with respect to uh as well with respect to the Olympics uh uh and the high vacancy rate and yet we're still thriving as a city uh is important and uh felt it was important for education to have a voice there at the table uh the found Education Foundation Taste of Culver City was was amazing uh wish I could have even gotten there for for more of it but it was is a phenomenal event and then went to the uh avpa um uh music tech showcase I believe there's another performance coming up uh these students are amazing what they can do um in terms of mixing in terms of their musical Talent uh and uh I had a great time uh took my whole family with me to to watch the performances so we could all cast our vote um at many of these events uh I heard a couple of concerns as people from the public came up and spoke with me concerns about over Reliance on YouTube and technology and our schools um concerns um uh you know about the honors program uh and uh and I well I'll get the chance to talk a little bit about that later as well and of course the school finances um and it was great to hear such support out there in the community and wanting to make sure that we're retaining the talent we need to be able to thrive as a district um and investing in our schools the way we do in which we have in the past so thank you all again and always appreciate your feedback with respect to everything oh I almost forgot today I actually just came back from um the conference for Jewish California as well um where there there is a chance to be able to Lobby on behalf of bills that not only protect our students uh of a variety of backgrounds but also to make sure that we're standing up and making sure that we're continuing to support uh our Refugee population and those who are um uh going to be affected by hr1 who are going to be losing a lot of critical benefits that will affect our students um in terms of the medical treatment uh and their availability of resources so appreciate created the great opportunity to get to talk uh with uh folks the state uh about those issues uh that reflect all of our values and making sure that every voice is heard and protected thank you good evening everyone I want to give a shout out to the uh spectacular speech and debate fundraiser um that was fantastic uh good time thank you to all the volunteers who organized that and the Fantastic uh competitors in that um I will be use my bully pulpit and insist that I don't care what Justin Bieber says uh socks with sandals are not high fashion despite what the crowd in my opponent thought uh on that and thank you to the Village well uh for hosting that event um taste Culver City was fantastic as always thank you to the donors large and small and all the volunteers who who provide the elbow grease to make sure it happens um and and to Wendy you know for your leadership and and everyone else who who works on that the layout was fantastic if you didn't go it was a little bit more spread out this year so you had time to finish 1 Booth before you moved to the next Booth um no tickets so that was you know a lot of a lot of good uh things this year um great food great entertainment and always appreciate the the support um from the community for our students congratulations to all the PTA honorary service award winners uh that happened recently I was also fortunate enough to attend the Cotto know high and deal that'll ninos at um at El Marino the student performances are fantastic and it's it's great because as my colleague said it goes from the TK and K kids all the way up through uh um the the fifth graders and just seeing the different performances is fantastic also had the um great opportunity to attend the mutual Aid art fair this weekend put on by a number of members of our community including a number of members of our ccusd staff um in support of the rapid uh response network uh helping out families who are uh affected by things like the ice raids and and the fear of that type of persecution so a lot of really nice art um there and and just an opportunity to to support some members of our community who continue to struggle um to this day because some of the the federal policies um we already celebrate well we already acknowledged the week of the teacher last week but tomorrow is actually the California day of the teacher um it's always a little confusing there's 1 week and then there's a day and they're separate um day teacher actually has its roots in Mexico as data that mro um so thank you to everybody uh tomorrow um for that and classified school employee week next week uh we can never have enough of that again uh hats off to to you all um very excited to hear you're going to Lobby day uh president Jack now it's a good time I went several times when I was a chapter leader um it's kind of a hectic day and you you talked to a lot of people but uh you know the advocacy for particular issues and and bringing the experience that you have you know on the school sites really matters um and bringing that to the legislature so thank you for doing that and and all the work with that and thank you Mr long again just for your continued advocacy for our students who are joining us from other places thank you uh thank you everyone I'll be very brief and plus when all my colleagues Council Peter service award was great taste of Corporation was great to the ad Foundation um and of course the CCMS we should debate fundraiser was amazing thanks is 1 all my colleagues I think that we were at many of the same uh events I do want to acknowledge that uh um uh Mr long had mentioned about some of the items that was mentioned in the aanhpi Proclamation and uh on Saturday I was I had the amazing privilege to go to UCLA foundations and Futures debut of their multimedia textbook I was there along with uh rayley Loretto and Donte alvo or CC CCMS teacher um and they spent 6 years developing this multimedia textbook which is now available for free and it's really meant there for um you know K through 12 but mostly High School uh and it has module high school and college and it has modules that can be implemented within many different um scenarios what whether it's US History ethnic Literature Like there are so many uses for it I hope that uh our teachers will be able to take advantage of it I did bring back some materials to share with you all um and also I know that uh we've had um some um some initial conversations with teach a API which is also a know uh a no charge uh uh nonprofit that does partner with school in order to offer especially at the elementary level uh books and curriculum that can increase our uh belonging and uh provide windows and doors for our students to to uh increase empathy identify and uh provide space for pride so I hope that we uh can use these free resources in the future and with that uh I'd like to take a 10-minute recess if that's okay with all of you and we'll return at 8:28 thank you recording stopped okay friends if we can return to the Das please thank you recording in progress okay 9.2 thank you and good evening so tonight item 9.2 is being presented as an information first read item for the proposed English 10 honors course outline the intent of tonight's presentation is to provide the board with an overview of the proposed horse framework the development process and an opportunity for the board to review and provide feedback prior to returning for any future approval action I also want to briefly provide some context regarding the process and materials used in development of the course to speak to alignment rigger pathway structure and implementation the proposed course outline was collaboratively developed by the anticipated English 10 honors teachers and partnership with site and District instructional leadership including the assistant principal overseeing curriculum the director of teaching and learning and the feedback from the department chair the course was designed using multiple foundational resources including the California common core state standard grade level standards for English language arts research based honors instructional practices College Board aligned expectations for rigorous college preparatory English instruction and a comparative review of honors English Frameworks from neighboring and comparative California districts I also want to acknowledge that with many honors English courses questions sometimes arise regarding text selection and how rigor is defined with contemporary English instruction the proposed framework intentionally incorporates both conical and contemporary literature including analyt Circle study of text within 1 ethnic studies Innovative unit to support Advanced literary analysis research inquiry discussion and evidence-based writing in honors English courses rigorous reflected not only in the texts themselves not in the number but in the depth and Analysis Independence synthesis writing and performance expectations that students are required to demonstrate the proposed course is intended to provide increased rigor through greater depth of analysis the complexity of an inquiry again the independence the analytical writing and academic discussion and research expectations while remaining aligned to grade level standards and maintain open access for our students additionally once the course outline is approved and then brought to the College Board for final approval we will work with the site to provide an updated English pathway visual that I can provide as an as a follow-up update and a future superintendent report and also share through a Friday memo communication for forward reference finally as implementation moves forward Educational Services in the high school will continue monitoring enrollment patterns access and participation Trends to support both the rigor but also the Equitable student opportunity within the pathway structure with that I'll turn it over to the board yes I'm first to ask questions um and I did ask some questions in advance of uh this meeting some of which I think were actually addressed in um email back to me at about 2:30 today which I did have some opportunity to review but you know as I work a a job during the day and not a whole lot so I apologize if I'm repeating things um that may have already been addressed at some level my understanding is that we have received a number of class requests for this course um do you happen to have those numbers off hand do I will need to look for them again give me just a second if you want to ask your next question yeah I actually have them too I I thought maybe I'd give you the opportunity but I think it was 217 for honors and 259 for college prep 1057 I think okay yes okay 257 all right um that's you know fairly close to half and half which um seems like a pretty good distribution there um and then also just for the Public's benefit too I've asked for the demographic breakdown of students requesting honors versus College Prep English but I understand that's not available yet so I'll go ahead and follow up once once we have that and we'll definitely pull that once we get the students fully system and into their sections and courses that will be easier for us to pull within the system okay um also just um you know we've had a lot of conversations around encouraging students to take courses that are sort of aligned with their um interests and ability and and whatnot right um so if you can give me a sense of the districts involvement in the course selection for English next year I'd appreciate that that's um just for example where counselors or teachers involved in helping kids identify whether they should be selecting the honors course was their intentionality and those students who showed strong performance in college prep 9 to sign up for the honors course what sorts of things were being done by our counselors and teachers yes so um the schools very aware of the Open Access I'm wanting to ensure that our students are all given the opportunity to be able to take the course and so counselors had worked with Administration and with the students to be able to speak to the course to encourage students who were doing well or students who were merely interested and to provide supports to be able to have access to the course if they are wanting to take it and then what during 1 of our previous board um meetings we also talked about the different interventions that are in place and support for students so students are interested how can we scaffold to get them to where they need to be to be successful in the course so happening before they even are entered into the honors course or an AP course for example so yes this counselor spoke with them and administration were aware and supportive and the teachers were um also very supportive in the process of not only building the course but also in speaking to students as 1 of our board as 1 of our student board members um detailed okay thank you um and you did provide a little bit of uh context regarding how the course description was uh put together um could you provide just a little more detail on the direction that was provided to folks that were designing the course what sort of involvement was from District administration and in guiding them in in doing this sure so it was a collaborative effort and it began um with District leadership polling courses looking at um sample courses across California but also within media area using the College Board samples and what they recommend as Guidance with the UC system has in terms of what they're looking for in rigor of courses and then um that along with the standards were brought to the T proposed teacher for teaching the course um with guidance from the the ap of curriculum at the high school and our director of teaching and learning and then that there was a collaborative process over several days of reviewing materials looking at these resources looking at the the guidance was providing and then looking at um what currently is in place at the high school to ensure that there is rigor there is depth there is conversation that again it's not about the number of materials but the depth and complexity of the materials that are being brought forward and it did take an extra couple of days in order to do that and I'm glad that it did because to me when our director would report back I knew that there was a lot of thought and dialogue behind about what materials were proposed to be used and why and what pieces of the material and back in the day when I was young you read a whole novel and then you talked about it but now there's a lot of meaning and resource that goes into taking sections and really being intentional about the standards that you are tackling in the central so that the students are in the skills and not just taking the whole text it's it's a nice balance and those discussions are happening within that context and then going back to the table and and then bringing the course back to the district leadership and we looked at it and the site leadership and then um our our department chair who has a lot of strength in the area and and looking at the course and then giving suggestions and going back and forth so it was an iterative process that grew over time with the resources and the understanding of what the team really wanted what they were passionate about teaching and ensuring the rigor for the course okay thank you um so you mentioned some sample course descriptions from other districts uh were provided during this process which districts do we look at we looked at some of our neighboring districts we had um for example Mira Costa was mentioned some of us came from districts surrounding pulled Torrance and looked at it in order to build what the template would look like for the teachers so immediate surrounding districts within the South Bay but then it was also districts that were outside there was 1 Northern California 1 that was recommended through the school board that um College boards excuse me that um we use Centinela was another 1 we looked at so it wasn't just in the media area but it was also recommendations through college board of some um strong honors classes that were rigorous okay um is Sentinel is that a South play school or it's near the South Bank okay well and not South Bay I meant South La which is different location correct okay um and you know other other districts from other parts of LA County as well with like East Side um Valley I mean we were looking at any of those districts pull up real quick some of the things some of the ones we pull give me a second Crescenta Sentinel Valley LAUSD down to San Diego these are some of ones I haven't mentioned okay Santa Clara Sacramento Santa Ana okay some additional ones so there was a lot called okay yeah I I I think you know this is as everybody here knows um you know a topic that has been a very hot topic conversation for years was you know significant issue in the 2024 election um as well and I think we'll probably be an issue again this year unfortunately um you know and I I just want to make sure and I I ordinarily wouldn't be looking into things in this much detail but um I've gotten a lot of inquiries from folks in the community and I think we you know we had a couple comments tonight as well about the the proposed um curriculum for this um I I would like to see just some of the materials that were used in developing um you know this particular course description including some of the course descriptions from other districts just so that I can kind of compare and contrast and see you know the extent to which this 1 Aline with those in other LA County Area Schools I don't know that there's a fundamental difference in being educated and Culver City Unified versus Torrance versus you know Pasadena Glendale uh Compton there shouldn't be right I mean we should all be kind of being educated in in similar things um so uh you know that's that's 1 thing that I would like to take a look at before this comes back for final approval um just a just a better understand what we're doing I I appreciate appreciate the work that was put into this um I don't think that we need to reinvent the wheel but you know to the extent that this alliance with other courses that would be very helpful to know when deciding whether to approve this finally okay thanks thank you again I know I I did send in 1 set of questions I don't know if I got the answer back on the questions that I asked I was checking my emails and maybe I missed it but um uh I I do uh I need to get the chance also to talk with Rey and a couple other folks and I think some of the questions were answered about putting it together but this was a different group of teachers and so therefore it was a new set of perspective as opposed to uh you know those who put together the proposal last time that got us to this that correct correct yes so it's a great set of perspectives and I uh also took the time to compare just in terms of themes what in California um was uh tend to be the typical units with within it and it does track generally within what's in this particular thing because I know some people earlier raised concerns about some of the issues but um items uh you know discussion around things such as identity uh and belonging and the tra of human nature um and Global perspectives that's always a part standard part of of honors English 10 and you speak to a really good point too because a lot of our surrounding districts have not updated their honors English in quite some time so that some more of a conservative contemporary type um traditional honors English that it has since evolved and so this is showing that I guess you'd say that showing how it's evolved through time where if we were looking at courses that were um approved 10 plus years ago you're going to see a little bit different feel instructionally but also with the materials that are being used but in either case as it was brought up this does conform with I guess the honor standards that are okay correct yes good um and the last question I had in all of this um was just I think it was brought up a little bit because I I know I got to sit on a couple of classes um before we did the vote to to bring back honors uh 10 and I don't know if I could remember it was ninth grade or 10th grade but they were doing Romeo and Juliet and I think Animal Farm uh 1984 is another example of uh uh you know a frequently used text Fahrenheit 451 um just noting that you know the it was a little Ray Bradbury heavy not that I don't love Ray Bradbury's Works uh and I know those were all short stories and not full books um but you know just something to consider in terms of other classic texts that are frequently used uh similarly The Kite Runner is being another 1 is a a 1 of identity um uh and uh uh uh you know for tragedy you know being able to use ones like MC Beth uh or Albert Camus The Stranger which is 1 I remember from when I was younger as well it's just a couple of examples that I sort of expected to see there to Kill a Mockingbird and maybe they're taught in the ninth grade um and that's why I was asking about putting a question about maybe these are being taught at another level and I you know you don't get to see the context is my my point about what's before it and what what frequently is after it when you're going into AP right and there's been a shift with literature again in the last decade or more in terms of what we teach in class and and encouragement of to move into more diverse authors and more diverse texts and hence why you see a difference here because that's been the the shift in the last 10 years um before Co there was a big push for changing up our text to make sure that they were representing um different genders different ethnicities different um diverse authors and again genres so that that's been a little bit of a change from when we would expect to see the more traditional text I think that's you have a balanced absolutely so and I think it's important closing point in all of this we are in the most diverse School District in the county and as we're teaching literature having students see in classic works the reflections of their experience has got to be very very important in this as well and the reading list that we saw did cover that very well and appreciated uh very that that as well um you know a little bit more you know in terms of learning things like rhetoric and and argumentation is I think which I think is very important to start teaching at this level I know it was discussed in the points but you know being able to see that laid out I think is very important and critical thinking is more and more there's this tendency that people get the opinions from Tik Tok and not from you know actual research and texts and making argumentation and understanding the fallacies uh since someone brought that up in the debates uh if I seem to remember correctly but uh just as an example of you know teaching students in terms of preparing for advanced writing and critical thought so I really appreciate all the work and thank you for this and the questions afterwards as well in uh Ray bradberry's defense reading multiple texts by the same author is actually in the state standards so students can trace the development of an author's style uh across multiple works and things like that so I I think it's a really strong course outline um and and again I I appreciate the standards alignment and the multiple facets of the standards um that it that it's hitting I mean it's developing you know the traditional reading and writing skills but also the critical thinking skills um so kudos to all the administrators that helped with this and the teachers including some AP language teachers who helped develop this and I'm going to guess that they know what's necessary to be a successful in AP Lang um and other advanced classes that they teach um and have taught in the past so good strong uh course outline couple of questions and I did send some of these in advance too but I think they bear um kind of discussing in public 1 of as we kind of went through this process of of understanding what honors is part of it is is you know just the inherent what it is here in Culver um but it's also there is UC recognition um of honors and 1 of the things that we noticed in that is you can't just declare a class honours you know there's got to be another grade level class non-honors class and they that's how they kind of Judge the rigor can you talk a little bit about the college prep class that will exist uh alongside this do we have kind of a course description for that or so we don't have the course Ally for that that would be a next coming step for us to make sure that that's in place we have the course that we need to to firmly develop the course outline and make sure that that's approved appropriately okay um moving forward but that yes you have you you should it's highly recommended that you have your your general course and then you have your other courses that would coincide with it okay and I I you know I don't know if we're we're taking a look at the second reading of this the next meeting or when it's scheduled but I think um you know I definitely want to take a look at what we have on the college prep side uh partner class um before I vote on this ultimately because again you want to rigorous class there um but somewhat different in nature than the the right the honors class and that's something that we understand that you see will be looking when they decide to recognize this as an honors class in their uh system or not correct and good point um the other 1 that I wanted to ask about is I thank you uh board member Carlson I also asked about demographics of the students um who have expressed initial uh interest in this and by demographics I do mean racial and ethnic but I also mean gender I also how many free and reduced lunch students there are do we have English Learners do we have students with disabilities expressing interest this and same answer that we'll we'll have a better idea of that once enrollment is finished I want to push back on that a little bit though because I think now is really the time to take a look at it and to spot potential problems become before they become real problems um 1 of the things that I think we we saw was last time when we made the move away from honors is we didn't necessarily do the data front loading that we probably should have um and we didn't do kind of the analysis of it and so I think you know their decisions being made right now about things like the master schedule and how many of this class that we offer and how many of that class based on those initial interests and so I think it is very important that we take a look at that even if you know somebody's got to flip through those papers by hand or something like that and do a little bit of coding or maybe sampling but but if we find that the student interest in these classes at this stage is skewed we still have time to intervene and encourage students to reconsider their their possibilities or offer them support or find out why they're not interested but if we wait until students are already enrolled then we're stuck with it for a year or we're stuck with it for a semester and we don't have as many opportunities to to intervene in that so I I do want to push back on I think it's really important to look at the data as soon as we can um about who's expressing interest in this no valid point I appreciate that okay thank you uh thank you so much um everyone Dr Henrik for your uh presentation I think that that beginning really answered some of the the questions that I had kind of front loading how we got here um and what the collaborative process looked like I actually didn't plan on on on having any any comments after that but then I think it was maybe in in in your response to uh 1 of the other remember that you said a comment that kind of struck me I think when you talked about um neighboring districts and maybe some of the districts that we heard about in public comments today and I think you referred to their outdated uh English head honors curriculum as as as conservative and contemp operate type like I said I don't want to put words in your mouth but I I can definitely say what that what that means to me and what I hear when I when I hear that I think that that means that those districts were overly white male centered in their uh in their in their curriculum and in their in their in their readings and so I think when I see this uh and I hear about a rigorous course that has centered around ethics of course about ethics uh but incorporates diverse teachings and reading um I think that that's exactly what we're looking for I think I'd also just like to quickly note the piece that the board doesn't write curriculum the board isn't the board approves curriculum and I think they prove curriculum based on a general uh umbrella vision for the district and I think if the board is saying that um we want rigorous courses the board is ALS saying that we want to make sure that the textbooks and the readings that students are reading um see themselves reflected in every day or diverse I think that this course does that and so um I really want to appreciate the work that that you and your team put into this and the work that the site uh did on this as well I did send you a bunch of questions ahead of time um um in preparation but also uh maybe listening to my colleagues I also have some to add um can you speak a little bit uh to class size um uh uh in terms of what you envision how this particular class would work and if there's any difference between this and the college prep course uh because the uh initial before my time the initial presentation for college prep was for a smaller class size and so if you can speak to that um a little bit and compare and contrast if there is any comparison uh that would be helpful knowing the CP is a foundational College course as well and then we have the honors with the rigor I would say that both courses understandably should be kept at lower numbers there's a lot of reading writing that goes into these pieces and for the teachers to be able to give proper feedback having a larger course is difficult it's also difficult for discourse within the course for the students um so my range would be I would recommend keeping it as it is right now and not going above mid 20s just be able to provide that written feedback the revision cycles that take place if the Socratic seminars and discussion it's important to have a little smaller group there um individualized support as well especially if we we want to ensure Open Access then we need to also ensure that we have the access within the class available for supports and interventions as needed within the classes uh for research and Project based learning for example and and again that differentiated instruction and conferencing with students it would be beneficial for us not to raise the class size those in those classes and so um to piggyback on that are we currently prepared for for that um based on our uh our load at this point now um based on the 10th grade going back to a college prep and um honors trajectory there is a lower cap still on the ninth grade that is um still a combined class but the 10th grade is going back to Cluster with 30 C okay uh and then is there a reason why we wouldn't automatically select all of our students to uh like a default Ela 10 and then opt out and go into college prep and provide students at this point in their educational careers some choice and autonomy and their selection of the courses and their pathway that they want to begin moving forward with after the ninth grade that would be my recommendation um and and having them be able to select what pathway they want to choose and go next within the English selection okay but that wouldn't that wouldn't you know deter like they would still have to uh right now they're opting in to either or instead of us saying like Okay if you like we recommend you try English 10 and you can you can I guess it's an approach right it's an speaking to I I think uh we all talked about how the counselors take a role in this and it's the approach of you know you took College you know college prep 9 you probably should be able to take honors uh English 10 and uh you know it is your yes it is your choice to opt out of this class but it's also encouraging everyone to have a more rigorous course selection right if they choose certainly so is is that something thing that we can encourage in terms of like a overall uh uh vision for our students and the way that we cancel them or certainly okay yes um so I want to go back because I you know we we've talked about this in in in the past that uh the board generally will request when we're bringing any curriculum to be presented for the pathways to be shown you know current or future envisioning uh so that we can speak to the preparedness and the articulation that we we for uh that we see them taking um and it also helps us explain to our public uh I know that we've talked about this before about potential Pathways uh some of the um some of the concerns that folks have had before is if you you don't take English 10 honors then you're not prepared for AP Lang or AP Lit and so it's helpful for us to see that pathway in the future when this comes back to us so if you could um have that alongside I am guessing and I'd like to hear it from you that just because you take College Prep 10 doesn't mean that you're not prepared for to take other AP classes is that what you were thinking correct and I'll bring back the it's the same visual that we use for the initial presentation that hasn't changed um all all those changes the approval of the moving forward with the honors class so that's added that was actually added in the visual for people to be able to see at the time I'd be more than happy me to bring that back uh that would be great uh I am very interest I'm most interested in making sure that we have all the materials that we need to uh show for the UC system that uh we would earn the UC weighted honors GPA for this particular course and what we need to produce in order to compare and contrast the 2 I know uh board member Guerrero spoke to that a little bit because you know without uh that distinction uh I think that many people in the community would question why is it a vanity word of honors because they're not earning the weighted distinction for the uc's um and so I look forward to seeing how uh you bring those materials in anticipation of that uh of of earning that and what uh and learning more about what materials you will be showing in in terms of comparing and contrasting in the future and also like maybe in the future and I don't know whether it's with this or you know just as a point of information for us you know showing us uh what our students are our requesting now I guess for 11th and 12th grade even coming out of uh College Prep I think that that would be helpful as well okay and I just just to clarify so you're have an interest in moving from our local weighted um GPA that we do with honors currently to the student waiting of the honors class it's not that I I want to move it it's that we need to make sure that we're earning the UC distinction yeah and that's what I'm concerned concerned about and when we only see the uh this 1 bit which is for this course and not comparing and contrasting with the existing College Prep we may not be able to um I'm I don't know all of the pieces that we need to show for earning that you see waited um honors distinction okay and so if you when you do come back back and you can let us know oh we have all of these pieces and we just have to show these pieces and we anticipate it will be fine then I think that our public will um will embrace it thank you for for that um and the um you know the reason why I'm also asking about course requests uh currently for our current 11th and 12th graders or even historical or um is because I from what I understand there may be uh some you know English Ela courses that maybe don't have as much interest anymore and I don't know and understanding a little bit more about what they're choosing over another uh it especially if uh and as a Baseline okay going into next year if that makes sense it does yeah thank you and sorry oh um okay um just to follow on the points that were made by uh a couple of folks here you know the recruitment is going to be very important in this um I'm not sure it's an interesting idea about having the default of saying hey you should but at the very least telling every student who you know you should consider this this is something that you know that that you may be up to especially if the counselor believes otherwise you know believe so it's important but it's important to go beyond that and it's something we heard also from from the students as well and I know um uh that uh uh David Mekhi had raised the question about the diversity of the students who are doing AP uh and it turned out to be a lot more diverse than I think you and I saw the email um then maybe we as some people may have assumed um but this is a but historically we've had that issue you know that's what led to the decision I think was a perception that um we weren't doing enough to encourage students from reverse backgrounds to challenge themselves and understand that this is something that they can do uh and that it's an option that they should take up and so the more we can support that I think would be very important and I know the the high school's been doing a really good job and they've been very intentional of continuing that momentum um sorry if I can just jump in here quickly just with a clarifying question um Dr Heinrich Dr hamz I think there it's speaks to the request that we would auto-enroll um every student into into Ela 10 I I I don't know if that was just a idea or if we're we're taking that and and and doing it but I'd be curious to know 1 if that's a best practice um because I definitely have some questions about that I I took it as a suggestion but I'll let president Laredo clarify yeah I wasn't suggesting that because the way that their course requests are it's 2 separate boxes so they we can't Auto actually Auto enroll them in that I think the the more so I was saying how can we have our counselor encourage them to you know get in to to take the honors class encourage every student or more students okay okay if there's no further discussion moving on to no 12.1 okay 12.1 is a ratification of the agreement with Grand River Solutions and um this is this is a firm that we are using um to well we're using as a SubCom contract um under another firm to be able to do a very specific title compliance investigation um and for hearing officers but it actually moved into a UCP so it was a specialized case that we um use Grand River solutions for and in order to pay them from this subcontract we to go back and ratify and the the agreement I'll move it second any discussion if there's none Carlson Luckman Guerrero I wait okay Mr lachman what what is your know we're taking I'm yeah okay well can you turn on your mic I am voting yes sorry okay Mr asador and I for Loretta thank you 13.1 so this next item is I'm seeking a preliminary approval of the purchase of 2 electric buses this is actually contingent on the approval of the JP Grant zero emission grant that we applied almost a year and a half ago which remains pending um why are we bringing it now is because there is a very narrow window of time once the JSP Grant is approved we need to procure the buses so we thought we would just go ahead and continue upon the 1 time funds continued upon the JP Grant we would just keep this ready when when this comes through then we can bring it back bring it back to you with the the PO has to come back to you for your approval that was Mr lachman second thing on his a few questions and I know that um other folks have also probably asked questions as well so um I just uh and I saw some answers but I wanted to ask this sort of for the record and for the the audience that's that's listening so it looks like each electric bus is about 450,000 dollars which seems a bit high is that kind of the proper price for electric buses and what we've seen out there in the market so the electric buses actually are 3 times higher than the diesel buses so they are the range and um from 3 4 350 to 400 is what we see and in the the model that we selected with the wheelchair access with the camera and all the best options that we need to track our transportation routes so that's why I think it's a little bit more than what you see normally and and um the cost is um the market rate right now same as though if the grant comes through that reduces the cost per bus to about $80,000 which is about if I'm doing the math correctly around half off of what a regular bus diesel bus would cost us is that right um so I think we we diesel bus yes it is almost equal to diesel bus but then we also have to remember there is this California state requirement by 2040 that 1 of the reasons we have to move away from the resale buses and there is we are actually spending dollars a year to maintain those buses right now so which is the general fund we are maintaining repairing and maintaining those buses right with this we are eliminating that operational cost to um and then on top of that um I wanted to share something else yeah we need to have these 100% zero emission buses by 2040 and then there's by 2020 so there we are almost around the corner and then we are getting a grant so right now since we are working with them we just came to know today the JSP approved that not approved they haven't given us a grant yet they're going to give us additional 40K so which could actually in turn turn out to be a 100K cost to the district for instead of 162 that what we have reported on the board agenda it's going to be 100K cost so if I look at it long-term operational cost of just another 10 years it's going to it's going to save us minimum for 100,000 right and we are now spending hundred thousand dollars so I think I'm just I'm this is just I'm sharing there is going to be 1 benefit uh with this and then zero emission is the way to go in terms of Transportation yeah so I mean that's 100,000 for 2 bus is not 100,000 per bus so it's 50 a bus basically it's not too bad um yeah and I and I want to be clear to you I mean I think we want to move towards um you know Greener Transportation generally it's not just a cost thing but I think sometimes it helps the public to understand that and addition to being greener it actually is a good deal for the district in the long run so it's it's a really win-win situation there um so there was also an email from a constituent that brought up a couple of issues and you know if you can just sort of address each of these in turn here so there's an issue with respect to potential conflict of interest due to a board members um employment and this is not an accusation it's just an opportunity to explain but if you could um you know explain how we came to decide on this supplier of the buses and and why there's not a conflict issue there that I would appreciate and then the second question is just what sort of charging infrastructure would we need for this and do we have that or we obtain that yes so we looked at all the parts so we need to have an electric bus you need to have underground utility lines and then we also have to have a charging station and then the model of the bus right the the T charging station supporting the model that we select JP Grant actually has given us um a preferred vendor they have preferred pre-approved vendors from only we can purchase so when we looked at that um the I think the the question uh was um Highland electric Fleet they're not um affiliated with the JSP Grant and then we also checked again with the calf Freight advisor who was actually working on this Grant and they also confirmed that they are not affiliated with this group and we only had third vendors that we could choose the buses from out of that Bluebird byd and green power and unfortunately green power the type the buses not available in 2026 so we had to now move between Bluebird and B1 ID and the when we narrow down the cost we we got the cost we Analyse we Analyse analyzed and based on um the cost proposal that we received Bluebird um byd is the best option for us so we done our due diligence and we've also contacted the reference says they wanted to see how well these buses are working and the references came out strong uh we got strong feedback for byd type us and we added them more today just for my team to see whether it is what we they were looking for um so we just doing due diligence and it seems like byd is the best option right now okay all right thank you very much that's it for me um I may be mistaken this I don't know if this was the grant that I referred you all back when I was in involved that that's not a yes no question it's great to see that we're doing this um I do want to note that um the Olympic Committee is looking to rent electric buses for the Olympics uh and so that may be a revenue opportunity for us as well if we were able to get these buses in time so just something else to consider is another good reason to be able to do this yes you are right actually I think almost most of the board members when you heard about the JP Grant every 1 of you shared with us about can we explore this grant so I remember everyone reaching out and we did um reach out and connect with the JB Grant yeah thank you you can put little plaques on the seat so and so Olympians sat here so and so Olympians sat there uh to make Choice seats um just and and you've said this but again for the record wheelchair Mobility accessible which some of our current buses are not uh with another reason why we we need to update them and then this is not a purchase at this time time it is approval contingent upon receiving the grant which we should find out soon and contingent upon some 1-time money in next year's budget yes I also would say with the 1 time money this is going to be in the 2627 budget but even presenting looking at the cost details um there is still even if you don't have the 1 time money the hundred thousand dollars what you are going to upfront invest is going to benefit us in the the next 5 10 years because we will be spending Less on our general fund dollars okay fantastic thank you uh I'm guessing Mr Isadora has no comments uh I thank you uh I just want to re uh ask for you to reiterate that this will not move forward if we do not receive the grants um and we're just preparing ourselves in case we do receive the grants and the 1-time funds you're right thank you with High School Robert Frost Auditorium HVAC systems um by early June 2026 um this will not they will not be any Interruption because the HVAC system is outside the frost Auditorium so the programs procurement mechanism the reason why we are going with the piggyback mechanism is because any time you purchase more than 119,400 threshold we need to do an RFP competitive bidding process but here we are in the tight tight timeline to spend on the adult education dollars uh on the technology purchases which is which those funds expire on June 30th so instead of doing an RFP which takes 2 months and then bringing back we may not be able to spend so we are going to piggyback the Downey school districts RFP which they have done in this case actually the we are buying an Apple product apple is only company that's going to give us the code but we're just trying to be complained with the code so we are just pulling we are using the Downey product but we are going to get the uh items from the Apple preferred vendor so I will entertain a motion for 133 and 134 so moved 1 second then okay um just 1 point of clarification there regarding 1 of the comments that you made um regarding spending down money for the Adult School uh by June 30th is this a use it or lose it situation if we don't spend the money we lose it yes okay thank you if there's no further discussion I'll take a vote out of measure e 73,100 move second any discussion seeing none Carlson I lachman I Guerrero I Isadora I I for Loretto passes 13.6 this item is the they're using the kid funds to um replace all our um cafeteria serving line equipment and we need to spend this by June 30th we we've been doing an assessment of all the needs and we identified High School um serving improving and we also got another Grant this year which will be spent next year on all the other sites so if this item is approving a contract with Aero restaurant equipment in the amount of 287,522.88 this is not coming from the general fund this is from from the nutrition program kit funds exclusively for replacing the equipment move second any discussion um so just to clarify for everyone because I know we had some questions as you said that is not coming from the general fund if we do not spend this this can affect our ability to get future money in Grants and that sort of thing as well so it is critical that we um utilize for legitimate purposes the things that we or intended to spend the grant this money on and this is 1 of them yes this is to replace the equipment at the cafeteria SO waiting on this would be a bad idea yes okay thank you and this was 1 of the ones that we had a question from our student board members but uh explain to them Miss Rajiv did explain that this was a grant so if there's no other discussion we'll put it to a vote Carlson I Blackman Guerrero Isadora I and for Loretto passes unanimously 14.1 thank you 14.1 is the Declaration of Need for fully qualified Educators for the 2627 school year um this is a document that we are required to have on file in the event that we hire any teachers that we require any type of emergency permit for or a short-term staff permit I do want to point out um that in order for us to apply for 1 of these documents um the board has to approve this so what happened spends a lot of time in the summer is if we hire a teacher late and they've come from out of state or they're coming with a different credential or they're in a program this has to be on file in order to um to get their credential approved so this is just taken as a precautionary step this also for any intern program students that we have um we do have to apply for them to have an emergency Cloud permit because they're not able to get a full Cloud until they finish their full credential um I know that there was a concern that was brought forth by our Union as far as we do have teachers that are um currently sitting on the 39th month list this would not be used to replace any of those positions of course anyone on the 39 month list it's eligible for any positions that we have open with first be called before we would hire anyone from the outside thank
