item six point five the 2024 CTS a education support professional of the Year Mr Steven Acosta California Teachers Association has awarded mr. Acosta with the annual Paula J Monroe educational support professional of the Year award which celebrates an individual member whose activities reflect the contributions of Education support professionals to public education the award was acknowledged at the April CT a state council meeting specifically the awards committee noted a technology technician and Culver City Unified School District for 25 years mr. Acosta is at 2024 DTA Paula Jai Monroe occasional support professional of the year and mr. Acosta stated recognition for my c t a siblings is a great opportunity to become family with the people we work with I really value the union because of congratulations mr. Acosta 5 to 3 try on okay thank you so much 44 everyone coming tonight in a lot of folks have already departed but it's it's very special for us when people can be here celebrate gives us a lot of good energy to then take with us why we're here why we're doing what we do so thank you to everyone that was a pleasure we're going to move into our public recognition portion of the meeting and I'm applause for that and I just want to make sure that I can touch on a few points by the Carpenters would love if the City School Board adopted a student Community Workforce agreement and committed Workforce agreement would ensure that responsible contractors have a Level Playing Field to bid that work and then when those responsible contractors land those bids they'll be able to put folks like a fine gentleman standing behind me today on the most projects give them an opportunity to work in their community what's killed themselves being in an apprenticeship program make the area standard wages and benefits you know livable wage have the ability to have a retirement when they retire with dignity when they retire and just giving us the opportunity to students right being focused on folks who graduated from the Culver City School District giving them an opportunity to to land one of those jobs and that when they hers were closer to home is that that welt stays in the community so you know last time on the road buying groceries from the local market and local small business this will also receive those funds from folks men in the community working in the community and we just want to see that holistic way of living for for folks who graduated from Culver City School District thank you for your time thank you very much mr. burns my name is Richard Burns I'm a representative with the Western Regional Council of Carpenters would like to congratulate you on all your hard work it's much appreciated investing in the future providing opportunities for local students to work on community projects not only give them the valuable experience but also investments in the future of our Workforce by supporting measure e and the community student work agreement we are investing in the next generation of skilled workers in Culver City so you hear we always talk about local hireright Crocker ham he touched on it you know you have somebody who gets out of high school and they don't know where they where they're going to go I didn't know I was cleaning carpets and I fell into this trade I've been doing it since June of 86 and I and before you now with my house my wife and you know everything else is there but if you have somebody that gets out of high school and they fall into the same direction that I did ending up with Healthcare a pension apprenticeship school free and skills where they can pass on not just to other workers that they're working with but possibly the family you could have possibly a whole family we don't just hire men women we hire everybody like what we say you know they can swing the hammer just as hard and even yell louder to get the job done so we would like like to help you guys just let us know what we can do to help them work side-by-side in the future again thank you for all your hard work thank you thank you and Jose if you're there would you object if they jump in front of you just cuz they're out there I'm going to I am currently participating in the brothers Keepers program at The Carpenter's have offered to me I'm a father of a five-year-old I'm 23 years old and I wish I could have known about this sooner since high school you know you had mentioned I think construction I saw the construction since I was 17 and there wasn't much opportunity is the way the Carpenters Union has offered to me I do agree and I have a lot of vision in the future to being growing expanding the knowledge that I currently have and I think it's a great opportunity for not just the Culver City Community but I was born and raised in Dale so I see how hard it is for young adults like myself to find their future find a path to follow and I think just two days in this program they've convinced me that this is where my future is going to be this is I want my daughter's generation have a better life than what I had growing up and this is definitely something an opportunity that young folks like myself straight out of high school straight out of college can pursuing life to have a better life not just for my before my daughter and their kids in the future thank you thank you very much I think you are a gentleman and then I have a card for Edwin and Sundown goat how many you'll make time thank you honor honor. not you I would hope that you would down for it I'm cursed you know again I'm speaking to somebody that's not here on behalf of residents that you represent and you should not stand for in this case any faction or splinter group that tells you not to use the proper names at these other facts a splinter group identify ask should have their comments disregarded in those instances it is not for the factions or splinter groups to decide for another tribe of action or splinter group on their name no matter what the research shows One Tribe should not be counted on to give advice on which group is or isn't real there are laws in place for this both Federal and both at the federal and state levels for one group to do this to another is disappointing hurtful that you was a city council need to steer clear of these entrapment schemes second the word gabrielinos should not be erased by someone that thinks they know what is harmful to my people and the other factions without consulting them to speak I am a parent of two students at Farragut Elementary and I am concerned about our district approach to budget us as we delve into the financial decisions that will save the coming it is imperative that we prioritize education and well-being of our students with respect to the district is showing the pink slip to various non-permanent employee that's mentioned that the previous board meeting I are just to reconsider which Physicians for understandable I think we can all agree the first touch of Target unnecessary administrative positions at the district level it is essential to acknowledge that rolls directly impacting our students educational and emotional development such as counselor intervention as admin on site and Aid carry immense value these professionals Are Not Mere line items on a budget they are the backbone of our educational infrastructure offering support that is crucial for the development of our students we understand Financial Prudence is necessary and difficult decisions must be made however it is concerning to witness the potential dismissal of individuals who played such a pivotal role while left critical administrative role. but the administrative positions that our school system can operate without and not what the role that provide direct support for students this is not merely a budgetary recommendation but an ask for a line our strategies with our educational priorities as a side note it was settled to cut the payment to new artistic under $1,000 to pay for many temporary position we need to be more financially responsible thank you thank you next we have to shock go ahead do you hear me softly or maybe a little closer Dragon King about a month ago regarding the eldraine cards as a recap our student council took over our PTA meeting and spoke about a major concerns that has not been addressed and years health and safety regarding student student bathroom thank you again to mrs. Laredo and just mr. gyro bartending that meeting and thank you to superintendent Lucas for listening to the concerns parents were horrified to learn that our Scholars had to deal with this for years since then I'm happy to say that the students voices have been heard thanks to mr. Baker lose his maintenance team bathrooms have been brought up to an acceptable standard I hope this positive change in culture and all this goes to show that the kids first the works together we all win thank you for your time thank you and finally Miss Gray good evening ironic that the Carpenters Union spoke about something that I was going to see about 10 electric lean back to it but I was wondering if it wondering about this for a while when are we bringing back the automotive shop the carpet carpentry classes at the high school I do think that is a valuable half way for high school students to learn about trades and skills I demand and as a personal note my eldest child went with I think his name was Mister brand the automotive shop teacher there and he went through that program for 2 years and he turns a lot which in the end he wind up having a scholarship at Cal State LA for a summer program in engineering department Transportation I would like to start that conversation of bringing those two still worthy trade before the high school children in another note is that believe it was the fall of 2019 at the college fair at the high school and there was a Tellez very happy to see a booth there with trade skills being promoted Fair I think everything can be Titan thank you thank you and president Kent that concludes public comments on non agenda items thank you so much so we'll move at this time 7.3 we hear from our ccusd employee groups we usually start with Miss how many from our classified employee union assuming she's there hey there you are thank you doctor can't I appreciate if you need me to give you and all the members of the board in the admin as well thank you so much for your recognition of Steven Acosta I really appreciate the fact that you embrace the ideas and a classified employee of the school district has been honored at such a level on that you wanted to honor him as tonight's board meeting so thank you again for that I'd like to say that I also agree with Angela Grace, I think that the things that she had said about what we used to have in the trades pray classes available for our students I think that that's spot-on I think that that would be something that we have to look at 4 or see t e program I know that there was some talk about making the ZTE Pro the more robust program with more selection for students of Iron's the district to take a serious look at that because I know that there are students that would probably not go to a four-year University rather do something in the parade so they can start working right away and get job right away as soon as they graduated so I'd like us to again take a look at that and discuss that in Partnership I wanted to get information from and that was something in the tonight I saw that we were increasing the PO for the amount of $10,000 for the assistant what that contract originally look like and why we are in such a bad financial situation in the district thank you so much Miss Sammy mr. long to meet with all teachers at El Rincon Elementary to discuss issues around specialist caitian it was really great for super time to go out and you don't hear from the rank-and-file and the issues around it and I really look forward to our working on this issue in our Labor Management Partners ship around the various issues that are teachers are dealing with also want to thank dr. Kent and after Lucas for a very good meeting last Friday I'm just discussing I'll say issues in general are most productive I think we got a lot of a net meeting on the Sammy was also there as well too so I just wanted to thank dr. Cannon dr. Lucas for that time I thought it was feed a very very productive to get you know a lot of issues cleared away I'm I want a plus one Angela gray as well what's e t e a much more robust CTE program on so many is a high school teacher myself so many students you know want that and ask for that for Pathways in areas like culinary arts entrepreneurship carpentry Auto I mean these are something that we hear time and time again from our students at cchs and I took the district to take a serious look at how we can get that done r c t e students I want to take a little bit of time to talk about some bargaining and also to talk about some budget issues as well so we all know that the other state budgets it's going to be a tough budget coming up this year this is not going to be a particularly easy budget and I think that we have a lot of our members that have been looking for quite some time around some very old outdated contract language about meetings and this is a really a golden opportunity for the district to help improve employee morale and listen to what they're saying around one of the main things that our teachers want is more PLC time and that is site-based PLC time where departments at the middle school and high school grade levels at the elementary school can get together with people under the apartment and work on things I'm actually asked all five of you to help push the district in that direction because that's not the direction the district's going the direction they're going is more all staff meetings the direction they're going is more District LED PLC which is the opposite of what our teachers want so this is the time now to say to the teachers in this strict I have your back and I want that too that we have more PLC time I'm going to start teachers when we started the PLC model you had at least six hours months of PLC time are the proposal we saw today that would be down to two hours of teacher flood PLC time from 6 this is something that teachers want and I'm really asking the members of the board of location to give guidance to the district and providing that time that teachers find valuable and that's collaborating amongst each other as for the budget I think we still have work to do with the budget so looking and appreciate Pearl today give going through some of the budget with us and actually dr. Lucas explaining some things too but we have work to do on that budget we are still not in great shape in the outlying Years we know I did here tonight about you know cost of living and in pain people living wages you know we have Aids in this District last Friday and said don't get a living wage and we have to prioritize our budget we still have a lot more work to do we shouldn't be just barely meeting the minimum each and every year I think that they're so much more work that can be done I'm around issues that we do with spending and I really encourage the Board of Education and the district to work with us on this and getting a budget that's going to reflect what's going to help our students the most commanding men said that earlier you need help where the kids are being affected and that's going to be in the classroom that's our teachers are teachers on special assignment for school counselors are nurses AIDS are the classified staff and they're the ones that are working with those students a day in and day out and we have to prioritize those students and you have to have a budget that is reflective of that we started we were in a good place much better than where we were but we have to do better we have to do much better than that because we can't say that you do for the next three years we don't have any money because as you all know cost of living is going up big time in the state of California and everything right and everything cost of living and he can stay well we don't know what to do and we certainly can't depend on the state as well either thank you thank you mr. long do we have enough Kenny today okay thank you for that so we can move to the superintendent's report at this time you I don't recall if there were anything appropriate but if so please respond where you're able to come in good evening everybody time good to see you and take you to community members who are in the audience and online tonight started here I don't have any particular, to the public, but I do have notes taken that I will make sure to reach out to the individuals individually to answer their questions specifically so good evening it may be hard to believe but my first hundred calendar days since beginning has your superintendents are coming to a close it has been a very full experience meeting many amazing people are district Partners becoming colleagues with our labor leads getting to know our amazing faculty staff and administration but of course the biggest highlight is seeing are awesome students in action both in the classroom and an extra curricular activities I will keep my comments brief tonight because I have actually asked my colleagues dr. Baxter and this is Zucca provide some updates for you all as part of my superintendent but I do want to highlight two items that are on the slide right there which is I spent time over the last couple of weeks at the open houses throughout throughout the district I have been nothing but amazed at the at the vibe MC of the events the attendance the excellent instruction seeing this happens is actually all grade levels I should say I was going to say Elementary but seeing the youngsters running around so excited to show their classrooms by Masala bit of running around the middle school. which is great but it's just really great and Susie asked about sharing their experiences in class and seeing our teachers so showcasing their excellent instruction the events have been extremely well-attended and it's yet another example of our community support schools on the slides in presentation you see another highlight of my last couple of weeks which is going to the Earth fest last Saturday I am really was another impressive Advanced here I'd like to give thanks to the team that works on the establishing this event is Jennifer Madsen sorry so long and many other of the volunteers of the statue made for such a great event I found a booth not only informative about ways to healthy environment but they're also perfectly stew Center sports of activities using a gauging strategies for the students there really wasn't inspirational day and before I hand the mike over I told you I was going to be short tonight I want to personally invite you all to the upcoming state of the district event on May 9th at the frost Auditorium is a personal invitation to those in the audience of those of you online I hope you can calm this will be a light reception starting at 5 with the program starting at 6 I will review in more detail my first hundred days share some of the mini EX programs and activities taking place and of course there's some of mine and the board's goals as we continue to grow together with that I'm going to ask dr. Baxter to come on up Locust so we're going to night mention a little bit about what Educational Services has been up to as of late so if we go to the next slide in terms of AR testing assessment update we are in the midst of testing season and we have to we get to raisins of the cast in the car assessment and the all of our acronyms and education will use a lot of acronyms or spelled out below so the California assessment of student performance and progress or the California alternative assessment depending on what a student might qualify for we assess English language arts and math in grades three through eight and 11th grade and their two week periods but you might see some of that kind of going on for a bit and that is because we offer makeups so if you can continue to see it on your school's newsletter that is why the cast test is also occurring which is for fifth grade students 8th grade students and 11th grade students it needs to occur once in high school and generally that's 11th grade you might hear of a senior taking it if they didn't take it at 11 this too is with two week periods and we have makeups up until June 14th although we don't think it graduation we're going to be pulling everybody out to test so make sure you get your test in then we have the elpac test which the English learner proficiency assessment for California we are in the summative phase which assesses Reading Writing listening and speaking and the summative window open February 1st through May 31st and if you're wondering why I heard about elves packing well that's because initials were given within the first 30 days of enrollment of us for student additionally we have the PFT the physical fitness test which has shifted as of the past 23 years which is a an attempt score so that is given to students in grades 5 7 and 9 and we have a pee test now you might be wondering why were only offering 24 test because Culver City Unified School District has 25/8 courses however the AP Calculus will begin next fall so next fall our number will be 25 tests that are available for students and we are testing approximately 890 students this year in a exams and those tests begin May 6th through May 17th and as we go to the next line all of this feeds into the data that we used to create our El Cap we are in the next iteration of the local control accountability plan and the pack has been hard at work they're pictured up on the upper right hand corner a little small here on your screen but they are hard at work they've developed 7 new goals created new actions or effective actions for each goal as is prescriptive under the El Cap plan and guidance they've reviewed cast chicks and other survey data and looked at different partner feedback and which chested actions and goals that have been shared so we are creating a through line for all of our family community engagement groups to feed the work of the El Cap then plan next steps are for the El Cap pack to review metrics and continue the draft of the elk at and Elk elk have to get like a begins on Friday reviewing some of our narrative that goes into the oil cap the next slide takes us into du Lac and do you like is a very important group that meets monthly along with the El Cap pack they meet separately but they feed and give ideas and suggestions for the El Cap among other roles and responsibilities this a few weeks ago they attended Kabhi the do you like also reviews reclassification data Pathway to buy literacy numbers they ask about the seal numbers we share all of those data points with our dulac families that then go back and share with their local elac's they have reviewed the seven goals and gave given feedback as well to the pack and they suggested new actions or recommend which effective actions impacted English language Learners and they've helped Elevate items they'd like to see more of they will review metrics and draft the El Cap and the superintendent reports to be like in late May or early June and then if we continue on we really need to take a moment to thank our Dei colleagues and our our community members and staff and colleagues who's so all of these partner groups because it's not it's not just one person in the room there are many people from all different School sites in the room supporting this work and that leads me to the black family advisory Council which has endeavored recently in a lot of online learning and I'd like to thank mrs. Jordan who is organized so much of this learning dr. palmeri has talked to the group about how to engage an inter inter. programs how to there has been conversations about how to engage your child in different activities and this work is Rich and robust and we also have dr. Angela Luke who is support planning and family engagement activities for the future so we really appreciate this work and we also thank the work of this group because it is impacting our El Cap in our seventh goal as we look to set targets for African American student achievement and if we go to the next flight our Equity advisory committee has done a wonderful job and looking at their plant evaluating their plan adding some of their actions and their tenants to the plant to where they would fit like a puzzle piece into the El Cap under the new seven goals and so we really appreciate their flexibility as we move forward into their next iteration upon completion of the elf so they have worked really hard we met begin on Wednesday and the different task force members are taking over different items on the agenda and we're very appreciative of all the collaboration our next group is the lgbtqia plus task force and they recently words to create a pride in the Park which is a marvelous event and they're working on professional development for educators from Doctor Pompeii and there's an upcoming planning for lavender graduation which were cited to be planning the Thursday afternoon and they're looking at purchasing inclusive texted their antivirus Grant and through the partnership from Culver City Educational Foundation so we're very thankful for all of our engaged affinity roots and all of the support they give to make Culver City the first most diverse District in LA County permit so thank you and now I believe it's my turn to introduce Mister Elastica thank you good evening school board members first executive cabinet and members of the Culver City Community and first off the school nutrition Association declares the first Friday of May to be school lunch hero recognition later in your agenda we have a resolution that declares that and so I we just want to some of our folks here which work in the nutrition services there are 49 heroes in our particular department and just one couple statistics today weave 110000 breakfast 786000 lunches and 40% of our meals now or made from scratch and all School sites have salad bars and at the high school and at the middle school we offer 15 to 20 entrees everyday and currently we are in partnership with the city Culver City and the food recovery program and we are donating 35 pounds of food that can be recycled and used so I just wanted to highlight our nutrition services department next is our facility projects and I just wanted to give you a couple of updates is doing going on I divided up between starting to be getting there as well as some work that we're starting to begin with the transitional kindergarten classroom Construction lechery we're starting to begin at organizing and planning meetings with school Cypress nail community members for their input and the priority of our facility projects for measure e quick start projects for trying to get going some of the projects that are part of measure e and we're doing that I threw our quick start which means that we don't have to go through the lengthy process of going to the division of State architect and so beginning tomorrow we're going to start an assessment of all of the roofs in the district and we will be done by next week so that we'll be able to prioritize and get those projects going and hopefully begin some of that work this summer along with that we're we're not a drainage program or project I'm in association with the weight room that's being built right now that in the future as we work to do drainage work through the washer that will be able to connect with sting. now and Lassie we're going to the ER request-for-proposal process as we look to have a bond program designer come on board to assist us with this particular project Bliffert additional transitional kindergarten we're looking at the sites right now and determining which ones that will be able to do first we have a number of them that already have gone through the division of State and they're ready to go out to bed so we are working on that right now when we're proud to you report you and give you an I'm so excited that you have minutes from the last meeting to actually approve or not approve or whatever so that was exciting and then they were something else that you're currently I missed the last school board meeting but there was a comment that you've already hired a project manager and that seems highly inappropriate considers and we haven't even ratified the measure meeting yet so I really hope that that was misinformation I really hope that would measure it going forward and none of the language get f r e imagine considering how measure case language was finally re-imagined make sure that the language is per the actual what we voted on and not know what you guys think we voted on that would be great and don't start no signing contracts and doing stuff without a Blick so that's what I will end with thank you very much comments on agenda. I think I will begin with Mr Guerrero today I'm right sure thank you very much for a couple of quick comments Happy Passover to everybody who celebrate and good luck to the students getting ready to take testing test mostly AP and State Testing so that I heard there might be a few finals out there already it's a stressful time to also thank you do teachers and families were supporting students academically and just kind of personally with it it's an anxious time I noticed today is bus driver appreciation day so I want to send appreciation out to our bus drivers last week or so it had the opportunity to attend a couple of different avpa events the ABP a film screenings at the studio which was fantastic so thank you very much for the studio for sharing that space with us but just amazing student films there and and the discussion among the student directors afterwards was stunning how just adults and and together and with it and in a penny dated but properly opinionated and I'm proud of their work thank you to the students and everybody who supported them with that I'm in they also the spring musical which was fantastic again that was in the frost and and every time I'm in the frost I'm just stunned by by what an amazing space that that is the students music was fantastic and to be able to listen to that and listen to them to perform in and have that space for them is a fantastic opportunity I'd actually just been at the culture appreciation day that morning and so sometimes members of the community may not appreciate how constantly in use the frost is in the morning it's in use with assemblies and during the day and classes and in the evening practices and presentation so we're lucky to have such a fine adph program and then I just had one follow-up question because if I remember correctly were holding up our questions for the superintendent report for a personal comment I had one question on the T&K building and I apologize I do send this in advance so don't don't feel compelled to answer right now but I remember we were looking at t k plans and things like that a year a year-and-a-half ago that was further down the process but over the last six months to a year we've been doing some work around the facilities master plan and that's still in progress and I guess the one thing that I would like to hear more about at some point is just how are you make sure that the T K construction we do continues to stink with the facilities master plan I wouldn't want to see us jump forward on construction just because the plans rds-a have proved if that no longer guys with the the facilities master plan until May at some point and please don't don't feel any pressure to answer now but at some point I would like to and I assumed the public would like to hear a little bit about how we're going to make sure those things mesh well I so I think I can respond right now and we are very conscious of the facility master plan so as I'm working with telacu right now I asked him to look at our master and in relation to the tea-cake plans to make sure that there is not a conflict or there's an issue that we're not building something that we plan to tear down or take dicor modernize something that we were tune turn down so or demolished so I we are very much in sync with doing that and will be very conscious about whatever you bring for we will have looked at all of that and have it do you know with DFA I know if you changes to the plan to have to be resubmitted to the Department of the state architect if the plans remain the same but let's say it's here rather than their does that still have to go through the state architect again okay any change at location or okay perfect thank you if it's thank you thank you thank you so much and I will join my colleagues in wishing a happy Passover to those who celebrate I had the opportunity to attend an Interfaith Passover last week dr. I too had a busy time since since last board meeting with a bunch of I'm very surfing community events there was actually an amazing Elementary School math Olympiad event last Saturday that was very exciting because I felt like I was playing are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader I will admit how many have been I could not answer but it was very but it's in your kids jumping and shouting and really excited and energized about not then about learning and it was just very very exciting at to be there I I also went to the AV facing your art show I'm in that too was a remarkable event a quick shout-out to the venue for offering the space to abpa but the the the level of detail on the maturity in off of pregnancy was a very rainy day that day there was a lot of brightness did not ruin that day because of our future generation who is very in tune with their lived in shared experience and tapping into that and how we can educate communities about our feeling Glen's apartment I was just very exciting to be there I also got to attend the new art installation right here outside of City Hall Culver City Department titled I believe our Culver City it was an art installation when people really from all different generations of Culver City and residents and community members who created sculptures of a city map to them and there was actually a piece or part of a game where people also wrote poems about what Cory said he might have them into that just meant a lot to me I don't have any questions about the support units report but I died I just wanted to thank intended as well as our assistant superintendent for the really robust presentation that we also had it specifically that piece about the El Cap and a 7 to go with my interpretation black students achievement is one of the goals I'm it's not lost on this body that that has been something that I've been I'm fighting for since May Charlie on the board and so she was very exciting to know that that is going to come to fruition for this new El Capitan thank you so much good evening everyone and just so I don't repeat myself I wanted to highlight different festivities or months or days that we celebrate April has birthday and we heard already the great things that happened this weekend and I also wanted to say that April is the month of when sesar Chaves the labor and environmental justice leader passed away April 23rd which is today happen almost 30 years ago or a little bit over 30 years ago Cesar Chavez along with Dolores Huerta who had a birthday 90/94 first birthday on April 10th together founded the farm work ufw pioneers of making sustainability a key part of improving environmental in labor conditions they fought to prevent pesticide used on fruit and vegetables and to reduce contamination saint of Earth in rivers caused by these compote chemicals Earth Day with this week and I wanted to honor their legacy their work reminds us that we can make a difference by fighting a cleaner healthier environment for all Cesar Chavez once said the fight is never about grapes or lettuce it is always about people and so with that I would like to focus my remarks on advocating for sustainability and the a impact it has on our people we all need to take steps towards protecting Mother Earth no step is too small the only bad stepper the wrong State step is the one not taken the right to clean air safe water and healthy environment is a human right to achieve this we all must do our part our students are not just artists they're also policymakers and they have created the green New Deal for a district since our internet has only been with us for almost a hundred days I wanted to provide a brief history of our progress thus far and outline some future action steps in 2023 we took pivotal action for the Culver City Unified to become a beacon of sustainability here's our timeline April 22nd a year ago the launch of the green New Deal took place at the wind Museum September 2022 description a draft I would submit it and this draft was approved in early 2023 by the current board February 2023 high school students conducted a presentation on the green Ed here at our board meeting May 9th 2023 the board passed a resolution 39 regarding the adoption environmental policies aligning with 9 pillars of the Culver City Unified Green New Deal committing to its sustainability policies October 24th resolution 21 was passed regarding the district support of the green New Deal Olinda Compass Transportation infrastructure plan looking ahead I'm optimistic we have several critical actions we have taken here are some actions that I have been Gathering From are very busy parents who are working on sustainability work first and foremost we must create this policy the green New Deal into a master plan a comprehensive sustainability plan that guides our long-term strategy and initiatives we must review our sanity policies and make necessary adjustments as new information becomes available you must have fell up and environmental policy to drives education efficiency specific purchase e policies and focus on Greener products let's creative Tri-City Coalition this Coalition can be a bar Beach districts to share resources such as sustainability such as a sustainability plan and collaborate on sustainability efforts including a joint purchasing power is established co-op with neighborhood districts such as Manhattan to leverage food and cleaning supplies to drive to thin ability and improve quality La Ballona Creek many of our schools run along the biona creek we have a responsibility to ensure its cleanliness as well as the health of our ocean we should pay a role in maintaining and improving these natural resources I believe there's a garden there that can be renovated and the rabbi Yona Renaissance have has mentioned that they have funds to help us Deportes getting that done we have a draft job just actually an approved job description let's hire a permanent sustainable sustainability person currently our sustainability efforts turn driven to build resilience and ensure continuity we must create a permanent roll this position can support writing grants to increase our Revenue let's employee teacher to help us with our sustainability vacation to educate students on sustainability practices concept and helping our teachers integrate environmental awareness into the curriculum let's ensure we are doing green construction and it comes Ocean Master line with the principles of a green New Deal and for sizing eco-friendly materials removal and storage and purchasing finally and this is something we're going to be discussing today let's go and with our land acknowledgement our sustainability efforts should be in harmony with our land acknowledgement respecting ecological practices and traditions together these steps can help us take our sustainability efforts to the next level sure brighter Greener future for our students and for our community thank you so much and I will send all of this via an email thank you thank you actually you know what I really is it that he forgot one thing is that okay I'll get it and I'll come right back to you thank you I'm sorry I didn't know if it was appropriate earlier but I got clarification from the board member that it was Sister knowledge Southwest a being here today and for advocating for Union Workforce union labor construction but also really to me and I think relevant to all of us I'm really the importance of making sure that we are doing what we serve and making sure that our kids are College and Career ready for the future that we know that we are actively I've no pun intended our building for them in so I just wanted to thank you all so much I doubt if it's there's a point in our agenda later we talk about I'm at John. I just think it's important while I'm there still here. Also express my interest and and hopefully the body's interest in the agenda using a conversation or region dies of another conversation because we had visited before I'm about a committee work three men and a project labor agreement. I just wanted to take the time to say thank you thank you Miss Loretta good evening I really enjoy being out in the community visiting our schools and our tent pole event such as that have all Dimensions here I do not want to go through my calendar and before y'all with that but you know I do give so much gratitude to each of those leaders and events on social media so I hope that you can refer to that doesn't mean that I don't want to elevate it it's just that I'm going to be brief for for all of our sakes here do you want to talk about Earth day and how that relates to our safe routes to school monthly meeting that I ended this month and ongoing efforts for a mobility and transportation you may have noticed that our city has put in more than a million dollars of work to make sure heard that Crossings and generally the traffic areas around are each one of those campuses are improved so you'll notice a new paint around the red curbs also armadillos new Crossings where they weren't any before and a freshly painted Crossings as well that are more highly visible to drivers and these armadillos and bulb out help deter drivers from stopping in the red especially around are crossing and I hope that this is given a better sense of safety for our students and their families as they are crossing the street I know it sometimes feels like you know especially when there are cars in the red or even in the crosswalks and these bull balance help create a better visibility so that when there are free indoor roller Crossing in the crosswalk that there is a length of a distance that date that drivers can see them so I just want to thank you the city traffic and Engineering for making that happen over the spring and I know that a lot of it's been delayed because of the rain speaking of paint since the beginning of this year there's been at least one Collision in PCMS Farragut parking lot and a bunch of close calls and the paint and describing their sorely needs to be updated I'm hoping that we as a board can help support making sure that there's a new paint there and also to designate a pedestrian and bicycle path through to help the thousands of families and students that crossover the Beyond a Creek Bridge into Lindbergh Park through the back of our parking lot area there I think that that will go a long way in terms of safety and that's one of the things that we can do without too much Sean building approval and I'm hoping that that will happen over the summer it specially since we've been noticing a lot of cars parked illegally around places that the paint is no longer visible and that does not allow for the safety clearance for emergency vehicles to get through so and you know and that goes to our guests and to our staff who may not be able to view the lines anymore still around Transportation I know later on you have also met is Bike to School or bike month and I'm looking forward to seeing all of our Wheels out for bike to school day and that's typically the first week or two of school I'm looking forward to that it's always a really fun time later on we have our transportation plan that is coming in during consent so I expect that to be all fine and good but we do do you want to call attention there is a Metro LA Metro board meeting this April 25th and part of our transportation plan relies on free card to our students that also work with Metro LA and it is not it is not been a part of our culture here on the board to to have a process for writing letters support but in this definitely in this case and in others there I'm sure that we are all very much aligned in terms of supporting Metro mattress board to continue this route to keep the fares for K through 12 free and so if I feel like I'm seeing a whole bunch of nodding heads and if we can I've checked with other districts and other districts do not have to bring it as a resolution or as a point of discussion if it's something that aligns with our other things that we can write a district letter of support or superintendent letter of support together and if I can see all five of us just respond so we already support those like fiscally and getting our values like many years in a row so actually I don't think it needs to be a discussion at all we have exactly re-up for three years straight so the we we pay for it out of our pocket to help subsidize it's already in our budget so it's as far as I can tell why would we I mean there's no I don't think it's coming up for Metro's board so we should see animal letter of support so I hear what you're saying I don't think it needs to be a discussion cuz it's already could just come to the superintendent so if it comes from this until I would like to in the future formalize our Norm. sending letters of support especially like this that should be not it's just not in our government handbook to to do so and so I would like to see that in the future especially so that we do not spend time here on the diet you know I necessarily disgusting things that we all know that we are supporting that being said the only other thing that I want to talk about is some of my conversations with interest holders. And parents and staff that our parents are concerns around pink slips or what they're calling pink slips and which is our annual notification of temporary employee that happened at one of our more recent board meeting and I know that not everybody doesn't hand or watch the watch it back and all they do see sometimes is the agenda item where we are notifying these employees with the intent later on to possibly bring them back but that would not be until later on in the spring I'm dishes a normal regular part of every district offices and it is necessary in all for budgetary reasons and that does not mean that their positions are being eliminated and I want to just reiterate that the superintendent's report last week also said that we are preserving position especially counselor sister of student needs so I hope that that both will staff and our interest holders in families and every Everybody do not feel a amuse immediate urgent concern around that right now about it because those are the positions that we are not eliminating right now we are still sticking to our values of making sure that our students are getting Denis their needs service they're getting their needs and I just want to reiterate that and somehow I feel like maybe we need to continue community getting back to our public so that there isn't a scare to them that their students are not going to be without counseling services and thank you so much okay thank you so I just want to make two brief comments prior to sharing some remarks so thank you to miss hammy and mr. long I agree that meeting was extremely productive and I feel a lot of gratitude about that time spent it was worthwhile and then I also just wanted to acknowledge the folks that came out to speak tonight from the Carpenters Union we really I really appreciate you being here tonight I appreciate the language around Community student Workforce agreement I hear about different agreements from time to time they get different names depending on who's speaking or maybe the language evolves I'm not sure but I particularly like that Norman clature and anyway I just wanted to say we have a an interim business cheap business officer in place right now and as far as I'm concerned it's a good time for us to consider discussing this as we move into mejri in in whatever way that's going to looking and at the very least the BART the board should have a public Russian about. So thanks for coming to bring it to our attention but I need to spend to my remarks tonight talking about a very significant loss that our community has had so it is going to it is going to take a toll on yes I'm going to do my very best but it's very important that I say these remarks so tonight we're going to adjourn in memory of principal Nina shiratori who is principal, Reno for a very long time and before that was assistant principal for that was teacher and teacher and assistant principal in and on and on and a parent in the district and but it's important that I sure have some remarks about this loss now Mina was and it's been a for the entirety of my time on the board so it is also a personal loss for me I had the pleasure of working with her relatively closely on a number of important initiatives Mina shiratori was an equity champion and I decided to focus not because among all the other things that she did really well I probably couldn't speak to them with very much Authority not being a professional educator but but I did work intimately with her on the number of equity related issues and I know this there's a lot about it so she really understood like learning you know developing Minds you know the reason that that Equity is important for the sake of young brains which really stood out to me but she also was quite realistic about institutions and that change happens at the speed of molasses and I appreciated that about her because she would be there for me when I was impatient and kind of talked me down from the ledge I could off and call her and get that that Resolute tone from her that we're going to do this but it's just not going to be as quickly as you want it to be Kelly she understood the importance of sustained were rather than Dino origin reactive work she understood the importance of leaders of color grabbing the mic and holding it but sort of in an understated way to be honest but so much more it was under China's leadership. The target language AIDS at El Marino became unionized which was quite a scandal in this District at one time people would be surprised to know we attended along with other members of this body the dismantling Supremacy big giant educational conference together the big group of 20 or more on CCOC staff members in the wake of George Floyd's murder Nina took on Herculean efforts at promoting equity and parent funding and collaborative Community Building at El Marino but Mina was not just working at her own site she was a role model and inspiration a mentor to principles that are here with us now but also that were with us during her time at CCISD she showed me that she didn't believe in performance only or that our values should just remain in the space of ideology but rather in structural shifts that really depend upon that sustained support I was talking about but also notably capacity building at site levels she just understood that in a very deep experience base way she showed me that what she meant by that when she talked about structural growth and sustained support that it was to follow the district needed to do better by showing up the sites that was something I really took from her and she wanted us to know that actually on her way out because the sites so often so alone even after being given these giant theoretical undertakings to implement and then also at the same time that the district needed to trust their site leaders to know the needs of their student their stuff bodies and their facilities as as experts in their own right and it was really because Mina exuded any sort of like false warmth or anything that allowed you to know she loves you and every single child that walks through her door but you did know it because it was her strength it was her no-nonsense commitment it was her loyalty to her team her friends and her ccic family and I mean that you will be very missed so thank you we are going to take a recess and we will return at 8:15 thank you okay I'm here now that mr. ezidore will return it momentarily I think it's okay to start we we feel right I feel like we're ready so we're going to begin with our information items and our first information item is 9.2 would you like to open it up for a second Lucas resolution on multilingualism yes thank you. have to physicians at that most Elementary sides and this job description allows schools to Taylor some of the duties toward what the school needs are so I'm asking a board for approval on this this new position which has been reviewed by Prince Falls teachers partnership by and administration I'm looking for a second okay so this is clearly at the top and approval so if if there is a question as we started looking at our budget and we started trying to see how we can downsize for as semi-state right size back to pre covid I think it's important for us to just clearly communicate to the car Unity that we are considering equity in that schools who are title one will have a different job description or different number than those who are not Title One and the reason is is because the children the students there have more needs and that we're going to look to support them is that can you just clarify that are that's absolutely correct one of the things that we did is that we created a priorities as far as what we would look at when we were making these reductions in addition to that we were looking at schools with high knee and looking at those clothes possibly a little bit different terms of Staffing in terms of what their needs are and allowing some flexibility for each go to Taylor the duties on specifically for their students the public comment today about ensuring that we did not remove a fun sorbino Personnel from the classroom this is going to be a position that's in the classroom correct these are support staff positions but they work with students in the classroom as well as provide intervention support coaching and other types of support for both classroom teachers and students as well for the 55% of the budget require correct did we look into that okay thank you I really appreciate that so thank you so much for all the work I know that this has been months and months and trying to go from covid funding positions tune on covid-19 and unfortunately you know I can't swing my Juan and continue to fund everything that we need because these positions were needed otherwise we wouldn't have put them there and we have seen growth in our items and then we can adjourn so this is the land acknowledgement discussion I did put this on the agenda because I was having trouble getting people to read the land acknowledgement and then as I was I was I was learning more about what was going on behind that I was beginning to first and that it was time for the board to to discuss it because it wouldn't be appropriate for me to pull it just for the sake of awkwardness because I also really want to acknowledge that work number McBride works for a year to get the land Alex went on the agenda and it wasn't that people opposed that by any means but it it took some effort and it went through some you know some iterative process he's and so I just want to make sure that that we in a thoughtful and considerate and transparent way so I let you all leave the discussion okay I will start this at so you might have received the toolkit that is known for how to create and have a land acknowledgement that is respectful and that has a meaning of meaningful Land Management and I believe that it's important for us to really have a discussion about what does it mean for us to do a land acknowledgement because the land acknowledgement I just read a little bit of this toolcat you know and it talks about how we must consider the land acknowledgement of first step in initial step and that with intention and purpose that we add next steps to the land acknowledgement bright and even the words that we use it talks about the land acknowledgements do not exist in past tense or outside the historical context and so us not you lysing Arcola colonize history in our current lending all the trim it is also not recognizing a respectful and acknowledgement so there are many layers of how we are currently not following even the Basic Land acknowledgement that is respectful and meaningful and as you can tell this was place here and when I came on it was placed here literally a board member asked and it was placed after a year of I'm not sure if it was done in close but I don't remember us having any discussion about what does the board want the land acknowledgement to Encompass and maybe it was done before I came on but since I came on we've been reading this and in addition it also the two can also talks about when is it appropriate to do a land acknowledgement in that's not I just wanted to give that and I'll be happy to answer any questions or or or you know hear your perspective on how we can do this in a meaningful way I think you other board members I'm glad we're having this discussion I just was under the second. Last year in the calendar year of 2023 so long ago that he had nodding head to the right staff to go ahead and contact our Native American community members to make this meaningful to are you notes to our community and to the district and so I feel like if I could just make this kind of like procedural more than procedural isn't mean that's more like rooted in steps because I think that all of us kind of have a similar value that we want this to be more than performative and so do we have I mean I would like to see that we do have caulking that we want to move in this Direction Where We were asking staff to take these next steps in order to create a better relationship this is does everyone feel good about that I feel like we're just reiterating what we did last year and I think I'm so they can they can take part in this because it happened under previous leadership and I don't know if any if any work was done with the previous leaders but my point is I agree with you I would end this is one of the set priorities that we did in our board retreat so we're not adding to any of the direction that we have given our superintendent we're just asking for for this to become more meaningful sustainability in conservation efforts so and I also feel like this work a lot of this work can be done not on the diet and can be you know done by staff and would asking if if you ever need us to time and then we can we can do that individually or in teams whatever makes sense just wanted to add one thing I think it's great again I would love to appreciate it very much if it's staph set timer 4 minutes I'll begin to establish some of these relationships with local native leaders and and communities and things him and I think we saw a little bit tonight with the person who spoke during comments it's hard it's not like there is a single native Community with a single unified leadership and you can go speak to that person and get the perspective get up there different entities they don't always agree you know I do just having done an acknowledgment in this area tribal names can be contentious and which ones are used and which ones aren't used in a certain group of folks may have a perspective about let's not use colonized names and another group says but that's alright entity itself you know it's not like you can go speak to one person and get the word or that the end-all-be-all kind of perspective but engaging in different communities engaging folks who are with here within the district today the families were students but also some of the local kind of political entities in the county you know how many think that is is a very mixed feelings about just reading land acknowledgement over and over and over just to remind folks these Land once belonged to somebody call center on Cedar and work we're taking but it's it's the real work about establishing those relationship and Earth Day and answer the conservation land stewardship I get a little nervous when I did that brought up over and over and over because I don't want to get Native American communities Niche into this and the stewards of the land there were a lot of other things besides to get a lot of things other than stewards of the land as well another thriving communities list of communities in their spiritual communities and things like that and just making sure as we reach out to different communities and and develop these relationships in and that we're really embracing of the fullness of people okay well I appreciate that and I yeah I would love for us to be in relationship with our neighbors I mean it is fortuitous that someone came and spoke to me but I also do not I just do not know what our network is and so I'm eager to learn and I also don't want to rely on it so for me the the part of it that feels the most sing is our you know is our is our conservation work environmental stewardship sustainability work and to me that allows us to be less performative but I also was thinking what if I wouldn't be this semester but what if next year or next fall we or i on behalf of the board asked the ethnic studies Department if they wanted to have a conversation with their students about this students have any thoughts or if they want to do any research on it and I don't know if that would be a yes or we have plenty of curriculum no thank you but but maybe it's an opportunity for the board to learn from the students were actually immersed in curriculum around related issues because we're over here waxing poetic and some of us doing working and myself not doing very much work on it so that does that sounds good yeah I also just want to say cuz you mentioned that we don't know who are the partners I don't know if we do the California Indian culture and sovereignty in center created the toolkit and they talk about 4 important aspects that are next steps and so that's to learn about the oppression in the privilege and the history of colonization that's to build relationships that act by supporting initiatives indigenous lead initiatives and the number for ask questions to ensure that our efforts are supportive so these these are just four steps right that we could take one of them but it just seems like we have a sentence and that's all we have an end so we could do so much but I think the aspect of like let's have our staff work on this so that we we make this be intentional and meaningful and the ways that they want us to make it in Sean meaning for right it's to learn to build relationships is too packed and supported ways and to ask questions when we don't know and and Saudis are the things that we must do and if we don't know if we if we continue to have the land acknowledgement then I suggest we start doing this work so you're saying ask a question to get to know who our neighbors are exactly OK Google Earth ought okay so I gave myself a to do when things are Chile peas are over I'll reach out to ethnic studies regarding maybe having a conversation next year if if they're interested and I'll let you know and then I think we got staff to do some investigation when when time allows and and then this this board will continue to engage around other ways to be less performative around the land acknowledgement and we'll keep it on the agenda and I hope to have it's an easier time getting volunteers
