the my name is Sandrine Cassidy I am the sustainability coordinator for the school district in my third year and I have two kids one graduated from the high school three years ago and when is graduating this year and going to Syracuse University I will pass it on to Caroline welcome bloody consultant I have been a school year passing it on to Penny Annie Moreno I'm an English teacher at the high school and I am the advisor for the student Garden excellent Jeff yes this is Jeff and I have a student to just finishing up at medicine going in high school so I and I've been helping cendrine out the last year-and-a-half I guess yeah Dorian followed by Joanna I am drained Davies and I am cooking in my kitchen I am the ESPN share to El Marino where I could share the Marino's will garden and I volunteer with the green committee and help out with Rena  ye followed by Joanna you're on mute maybe Allison go first if you're able thank you I've been trying to rename myself and I haven't been able to successfully I'm Allison Paige I am with the green team at El Rincon Elementary thank you Joe and I are you back yet run when I forgot my child on my mother of a year I enjoy that I'm a mother of the year and I I did your gardening lesson green ambassadors all the green stuff that Linwood house and probably doing of things next year for Middle School did you say mother-of-the-year yeah because I just forgot my my child you want to know Ward this year that's the best volunteer in the district or is it in your school it was I guess you know Port Jervis Glenwood how Elementary School Austin well-deserved Bronwyn and then Kathy Vargas hi I'm Bronwyn I'm also from Lynwood how I do green stuff there and I should also mention that we have a giant pile of mulch on our campus and it's more than anybody wants to deal with so the school is open on the weekend until SPM please please please come take it for your school and Noel Marina needs mulch the same parent told me they do you I don't know if the gates open Joanna or no I'll be there Saturday 9 to 12. navigate is going to be open and you can drive it in and grab them. Can you send me a the exact post and I'll post it on Culver City unofficial and on the green page and I have City Culver City moms and I can definitely if you could help me out and I know you've been through it and emailed you on a few days do but I don't know if it can you write it out exactly the way wanted to be thank you. I posted a bunch of places I'm hoping they will come and somewhere else sounds good to Kathy followed by Claudia Little Joe and I'm so happy you got that mold I wasn't worried I got that late-night call my God is great and you send me that information off of it I have asked what about 3 or 4 gardening sites they have very active gardeners and I'll post it on there and then hopefully you'll get rid of it and then we got to cover it because of some water issues we have to do some we have these types that were donated by senior these we recycled billboard and we use them to cover the lowboy that the city provided for the bravest Conquest event so if you need we could figure out how to get those to you so Claudia followed by Oscar and then run you hi everyone Claudia Marino parents on the green committee that's okay I'm not sure if you said you had an issue as you want to try to say hello or Oscar is from the high school assistant principal maybe not okay I run you say welcome it's been awhile we can't hear you you're on mute can you hear me now okay hi so yeah my third and youngest child is graduating this year from the high school and so I'm from El Marino and the advocates for clean air all that project and I'm just happy to be here again thank you so much of you and I think you're going to would you like to introduce yourself quickly and then you're presenting in a little bit so sure hi everyone my name is Wendy camo I'm the executive director of the Culver City Education Foundation also apparent in the district I have two that went through El Marino middle and high and then one who is nail school now so I've been doing a lot of pain involved in as a parent and as you know supporter at the school site level as and now at the Moore at the district level so happy to be here thank you I did I miss anyone or just did you say I did okay sorry I'm this is our last meeting of the year which is a nice thing in a way but is also a sad thing but we've had some great meetings that the year and I really thank you all for being so generous with your time and and work on throughout the year so and I share my screen so welcome the agenda we I will let Wendy speak right away so she has other things chicken get to them I'm not sure if the grades of green director will be coming but will say a few words about their program give you an update on the educational and operational initiatives that we've had in the last few weeks presenting the energy best practices will be just and Caroline I'll talk about the Free Fair bus program success and you'll see it in numbers we'll share the Earth Fest weekend pictures and then with some other things and then of course this is your you know this is a platform for all of us so definitely want us to be sharing you know what we do and so we're very grateful to have Wendy from the Culver City education education foundation and it was very exciting not only do they support this is inability roll financially for the last 2 years but they also came to us with an opportunity to write to Grand Theft she I think it was 1 and then we came to them with the second and they we did it we we applied for these two grand in a very short amount of time it was a lot of work we were successful with one of them and I'm not sure if Wendy will talk about it so I want to leave her the platform are you to be sharing your screen or is it just now I don't have anything formal prepared I really just wanted to take the opportunity first of all to just say I'm so grateful for all of you on this committee volunteering your time and do amazing stuff at all the school sites and and district-wide to help move us toward a more sustainable school district and all you know everything is being taught to our students as well as you know the proposed is that are being brought to the district operationally and for those of you who may not be as familiar with the Education Foundation we are a 501 c 3 non-profit we raise money for district district-wide Endeavors that fall outside of what the the district has the funds to support and so sustainability seem to be a really a big stick with that because obviously it hit every single school all the students and it's also something that is on a shoestring and never seems to get the the funny support that that it deserves so tangerine and I have been you know kind of meeting on and off for several years and trying to brainstorm on getting more resources to fund the coordinator position as well as some of the other special projects. The committee is is and so you know the success and our ability to fund things really just depends on the success and support of the parent Community as well as our other fundraising activities are are our events we just had a very successful event we reach to the business community and also Stu gun dacian grants do the two grants that we wrote this this past year we're both for the green the green video project that Sandrine was brought to me and one of them we did not get funded by the Rotary Club dead fund that was very exciting and we also have contributed to medicine to the Earth Fest and again that's just like the a perfect fit with our mission because even though it happened at El Rincon it was a disc what event it involves involves being a student education Hands-On learning all those things also bring together the community so. I was so glad when we were approached for that because that's that's just something that I really was happy to say yes to and I'm happy that we had the ability to support that so I would say that as far as our board of directors you know they vote every year based on the resources that we've raised where to direct those resources a lot of the funding of course is in the Arts of the Arts education programs that need to be funded every year but we also try set aside money for whether it's pilot projects or you know new initiatives that are priorities the district the district might bring an idea to us we've done some things at the high school that way and even if we can engage if under that maybe has a special interest so I have my wish list and I have definitely approached some of our bar deep-pocketed local Culver City citizens by saying you know hey do you want to make a big investment in sustainability and you know what would that look like in terms of like a multiyear larger dollar commitment it just really a matter of matching the donor with the need for the doctor has to feel excited and motivated to give to something that where they feel where they want to make the impact that was always helpful when Sandrine we have the committee can come to me and say you know hey as you're talkin to donors you know we could really use someone to do XYZ would use some money to do whatever it might be so then I just have that and then is talking to the donors you know I might might find out that that that's the same ability as is kind of their thing and that's that's what I work to do to identify those donors who can support the needs we have in the in the district and I said you know our board of directors and myself is also we're committed to continuing to fund sustainability initiatives I think again like I said it's because it is one of those things isn't getting ongoing District support and that's important to at we think we think of a large majority of parents in the in the community so you know again we don't want to spend our donors dollars on things that the parents don't care about but I think my impression and I I would love to hear from you as well is that in Culver City sustainability is a very important issue that a lot of parents support so we hope that they as we become more visible as a foundation supporting the ability issues at the schools and and check some programs we help Den that the parents will be motivated to donate to ccef as they see that their donations are going to fund those projects that they feel are important and I guess I think that's really all I just wanted to say you know you guys are doing great and I'm going to keep working to get as much money as I can to keep supporting your efforts any questions for me yeah I'm opening it up and you won't have any questions for Wendy thank you so much this presentation Bristol I did have one other like correlation I would stand rain and I were working on it remember if it was at the beginning of this year if it was last year which is the other program that ccaf supports that kind of overlap sites what you do with what a lot of you do is there school Gardens at the elementary school so we we give some funding to each elementary school just to help with Garden expenses and then we also support the growing rate nutrition program and to be honest the grown great program has has floundered I guess in the past few years part of it is due to covet of course but even before that it was due shoot there's a there's no Central District person who isn't in charge of making of implementing it and making sure that the information is Flowing to all the school and that everybody you know my job is not necessarily to run program my job is to raise the money for the program so I would love to write you a weed we have money allocated to pay for the growing great program we just need to figure out I need to link up the people with the right people so that each school is is getting getting access to this to that resource in one thing that the growing great organization has done is they've really changed are model wear for many many years they were kind of just giving us a binder some of which was you know helpful some of it was not so helpful and they've evolved a lot they have evolved a lot they found it you know I'm sure you've seen it a different School sites some years you might have a lot of really motivated parents some years you don't and then don't there's no one to teach it then you know that notebook is out of date and so I'm so far so now the growing great organization they provide the Educators so when I when sissy up hires growing grape to provide the curriculum that they will provide the actual Educators to to teach those but it still involves coordination at the school site because it involves you know obviously it correlates with your your garden activities in the planting and then the scheduling of the of the you know the workshops and so so far so Sandrine and I had talked about doesn't make sense that this committee would be somehow the coordination or the the point where you know I would I could give the information to this committee and this committee would would you know what is if all the school garden volunteers are represented on this committee you know maybe that would be the way to do it we still haven't completely figured out I think we have a gardening subcommittee and we only met I think at the beginning of the year maybe twice this year but we can definitely imagine having it you know more regularly and then I think the program would fit well as some of the gardener you know the garden leaders are here Carolina you have a question or comment I remember what I see with the issue was with growing this year is that they only offered because of covid and because we couldn't really go on site in the gardens up until probably a month or two ago I think what they would offer was something online and I felt like parents and Educators were and we're like well that's already a lot of online hours for students and mean and we're teaching gardening and nutrition is that it makes more sense that is in agar then or you know like Hands-On projects instead of a game being behind a computer I think that that this year at least this is why we didn't have a lot of interest in this program I feel I agree I do think that we just kind of getting through this covid. And and that's why I want to plan for next year so that we can bring it back start off the school year with a a really well-organized program yeah go ahead bring me one thing I might want to jump into is we have a beloved Garden teacher at our school who want to keep around and that might be a conflict as far as we're concerned pass we haven't been super impressed with growing with growing gray hair offer in fact most of the lessons and I can't speak 100% on this I believe I've been Rewritten because they weren't very impressive so we kind of done our own thing and have our own teacher that is quite beloved on campus and they might be tricky for us to want to take on a growing growing great instructor from that program cuz we haven't been super thrilled with them in the past yeah that's that's good feedback and I and I have heard that that's the kind of loop that that I need you know I mean obviously I don't want to be spending ccef resources on a program that isn't thought to be helpful but I do think that organization has evolved so I would love to figure out a way to get the all the stakeholders together with a growing great people and and see you know they there you are very accommodating work with us based on what we want they're not you know they they they can adjust their program as it to meet our schools needs so but yeah definitely if it's not something that this like then it doesn't make sense just to spend the money on it I mean it could be that this money is spent otherwise on the gardens however educate you know the curriculum vitae is that's what's interesting about this program in a that's that's the issue maybe the the recommendation would be at the beginning of the school year to have a meeting with going great and they can present to our gardeners our parents you know those that are interested in all this we're doing a lot of the work I don't know if it could be embedded in green ambassadors I don't know the details of they're one of the program's so now they can't be okay yeah that's already set up for the year right so it's only specific it's not the whole campus okay Dorian yes I I agree wholeheartedly I have some real problems with the growing rate for dilemma I have it right here we just had our final Harvest today we fed 900 something students and it was a really successful year and these sunburns are irresponsible on my part but anyway I really I really great great I've been in inara Merino Garden for 4 years so far and I never had anyone reach out to me I've never had any instruction I had was given the binder when I took over this year and I had a real problems with the curricula there were just like blatant references to waste and there were some they were trying to tell the three sisters planting from a colonial perspective like there's some really problematic lesson in the great freaking previously in it excited that they change and I'm excited to learn how but we spent the entire year creating a curriculum that seems to have been pretty successful and I want to be educated and I all I need to ensure that the program is going to continue after we leave because I like as he stated there isn't even blow them busy as them and it is such a massive undertaking it is a it is a part I'm job and I love the idea that someone could step in but I really want to try to micromanage their bracelet because it seems like they need a little guidance or maybe we can work together and make even better but knowing that even even on the scheduling side of it the amount of time it takes to schedule and contact the teachers and contact the volunteers and generate volunteers and then also maintain the garden that is that is huge the curriculum is like is like maybe you know 25% of what we're really doing just wanted to share that with you because that is something we were nervous we were like oh no they're going to take over the work so hard but the hope is that it's an added resource is the volunteers already are doing so much and then the other goal is that there's consistency from school to school so you know some schools have developed this great Cricket Lounge others have not had the opportunity or do you have someone to take that on it so those students at the school don't get it though by bringing in a you know kind of a consistent district-wide curriculum but if it's not the right and it doesn't make sense will if we work together we create one like I'm super into this than I also have to say I'm super grateful for everything that you guys have done or our garden because it's it's like it was only possible because of that you provide I mean the PTA was very generous as well but like this big garden and just thank you like thank you very much soap Allison is in the car I wanted to say thank you to the Ed foundation on behalf of El Rincon de for supporting our inaugural Earth Fest event thank you Wendy and she said is there a way to preview the updated Creek elem or a green grade in fact if we could I got done you know this school year it's going great could give us an access or maybe some additional information and then we could share it with her our committee see Dorian Claudia you had your hand up to I did but I should my question was but you just asked about the curriculum if there's a website or or some information I think the best thing is to get everybody out of Anna Zoom together you know to have them present to you what their new model is what their curriculum changes have been cuz again I'm not the program person. You know they can do the presenting you guys know you know and then you get can listen and assess and say oh okay this this could work for us or no it's it's still really not not what we're hoping for the only thing that gets rid 2 preview curriculum itself when you're on the zoom you know it's cuz I realize that we met with them in a while unite we heard about the all of the updates and how much more they're offering now we just we have no I mean without seeing any kind of documents or you know whatever they're proposing to share I think it would be good at least to have it ahead of time so people could take a look at it before the meeting I'd be happy to organize a meeting if folks are one before the end of the school year or mid-june that can be after if you still want to meet my work ends end of June so I have time till then so it's up to you Lebron 1 I had a question but it wasn't specifically related to Growing great so if you want to finish growing great are there any more questions for when recipes for Wendy so gardening is really a as a volunteer it we would have that's the we can drop Aaron's in they do like to help with gardening the area we don't have help with is the gross stuff like the trash sorting and teaching people to Campos and teaching people how to be more sustainable everybody wants to come flowers and so that's an easier area for us to get the help that we need from parents for example if we want the district to become more sustainable as far as our trash recycling composting which is pretty serious contribute climate change we need humans to be in the cafeteria and and actually oversee the process as volunteers we have gone in and try to work with the kids and talk to the janitor and talk to the cafeteria like yes but we can we can't be in there every day for 3 hours a day we did it for Earth week and you know it takes for a minimum of four volunteers to go in there and try to work with the kids but because the way our kids are seated summer outdoor summer indoors and all that so the point is where I see our school needing support and maybe this is trivia other school is help with actual dirty stuff I don't know if that means I don't know what she's capable of doing here but just a person that come in one day a week and maybe each day go to a different elementary school and you know help the kids and make sure make sure everybody is learning these processes because those are the we cannot get the volunteers to do have time to spend two to three hours in the middle of a school day standing over a trash can I'm going to do it once in awhile am I insane say that as as far as direction of how we deal with sustainability in the district we could use my view help with the gross stuff that does sound like something that would make sense to be a a district bonded custodial related type of position and priorities in something it's good to know that I hadn't heard you know it varies from school to school if I ain't have to get Bri volunteers they're going to come to Garden that's what they want to do thank you for everything that's that wasn't something I promise I mean again you do everything that you can do among your circle your contacts to promote ccei and the support of sustainability in the district you know then where that people understand what we do how the money that that donors give to us turns me on goes right back into the school so being an advocate for ccef just it it helps everyone cuz the more resources we have the more you know we can dedicate it made me think maybe it would be a good thing for whomever is there next year to come present to your bored so they have an idea of what the stain ability means I've been you know being out there and presenting I realize that not everyone has a handle on what that means and its associated Mystic so if that's something you ever have guest speakers at your board meetings yeah yeah yeah but I mean already motivated to support we need to get you do all the the parents to say yes I'm going to let you know to my capacity I will I'm going to support so that the resources are there for my school and do you think they're the possibility of a higher level of commitment for the position than what's been done in the past well I don't know that that we have the capacity I need to take that on but I'm continuing to solicit Gramps for that okay so unless again we're able to grow the pool of resources then at least not for this next year although there are some resources and that's actually I have a meeting with I'm trying to get I should say I'm trying to get a meeting with Robert to to figure out what what's available that sounds good thank you very much we appreciate you attending our meeting and being so supportive again and for your help with El Rincon and all of the writing and that this partnership continues next year absolutely some great suggestions that sounds great fire Wendy I think you hi Greg hi Jen nice to see you I'm so the me share my screen so we met with the new director of grades of green she's super Dynamic our contact has been Robin Murphy and she's the one working with all the students and boy do they have their Ducks aligned. we are creating stronger programs each year it was pretty amazing the presentation what we wanted to say is that there are a lot of programs available and what do they call them the oh my gosh I'm forgetting okay yeah they have O'Toole kids that's what she called them so they had they're going to have like they have gotten organized and they're off at every level of the you know K through 12 students and they have stipends to you know for the parents or teachers that get involved and you know they this is the that's what I wanted to do and I hope that's okay is send them are Leah's on emails and they will get in contact with you so I just want to mention something cuz I don't know if I will be returning next year I just would like to say that it's been 3 years and on a quarter time on a very small budget with Caroline it's about and that the district hire someone full-time and it's going to take a long time it looks like they might even I think the issue is the Union's right now that they don't believe in assisting 30 position I know they were present at this week's board meeting and I it went really well and we're going to change the district mission statement and core beliefs to integrate a part in a few words about the environment so to solidify their another commitment to to what we do and that was very exciting and we found funding that would help cover Mission but it would it's going to take a long time so I don't really know what's going to happen and I are you and I want to be forthcoming about this and I don't know yet I will help you know anyone else that comes in the position I'm also in to do the CCSD Green video project for which we received on the grant funding from rotary nvcr I'll explain that later but so anyway that's my news for right you know right now I I wanted to stay at the end but I think it's time for I want you all to continue with grades of green and you you do a lot of the work already on your own butt I guess you know we'll just have to see what happens next next dear send you and have any questions or comments did you have a so it basically seemed like the district didn't prioritize the same as sustainability coordinator full-time and you it's not really feasible for you to do it at a quarter time which seems absurd to me but it says that I have a meeting scheduled with mr. Chen about the position but you already said how difficult it's going to be they have Equity person that just came in that was introduced at the last board meeting and it took them probably a half a year or more to get that person in with the little frustrating is you know we've been asking to have this Mission way before that one but it's I think it's a great position to have and we need it in the district and so I feel like there's funding coming from California with the Surplus and what were saved the district also it's it's hard to justify but I'm here till end of June and I promise that I am going to continue fighting for this so we'll see how it goes I I mean if you individually I don't know right to Robert or and mr. Chen you know you're welcome to to share that with them sorry the Wilson Wilson grades of green your email so that you can have access to all their programs in Suffern to start next year cuz it's a really great I think it's been very exciting to see what they do in our and I different schools sweet we had only 11 student participate this year and he tackled the project that was bigger than he could complete this year so he's going to continue it next year he's a middle school high school student sings Middle School going into high school now so until we mentioned the rotary grants so we received $10,000 which is their highest Grand and 2500 from and what I shared with the board on Tuesdays showing how you know these Outsiders see the importance of what we do and how a video highlighting all of our what does sustainability means in a school district in a video format is how important that is so I think they see that and I I'm very excited to continue working with Builder on this video next year I may come to you too your help to set up some interviews and things in the school since I may not have my badge anymore you know we've worked with all the clubs they actually Beast with it evil friends represented it represented the green New Deal students and Human Rights Watch they came in numbers at the board meeting I gave them time and it's very exciting because the board with I think if you ever want anything done just bring in the students I get so efficient because the Human Rights Watch was there to ask our district to go back to 100% renewable energy for the elenda camp and right then and there the board decided to move forward in Robert is it it's in motion so I've tried for the last year and it seems like that's we've succeeded so that's very exciting and the events with Ava friends for Girl Scout project we distributed 1 ton of compose basically in a day at some of your participated in that and it was really a great partnership so you know continue to work with the city you were very grateful to DeVargas in the city for facilitating with the lowboy just made it all you know it was so easy in and out and we're race thankful for our continued work with the with Culver City Sanitation Department environmental programs Kathy you have any any comments and she took it out of her way we have her another year she'll be a senior and she's with b c r I think she's the vice president of scientific Renaissance High School Club so she'll be a good idea we've already covered it so I won't talk about that we've ruled out the three colored liners it's difficult because the students aren't necessarily putting them in is Pacifica High School in the right you know bins and then the custodians just want to doll in trash still so we're kind of struggling with with the system I would encourage you all to continue with the training and I know some schools have the workability students dance with disabilities that are helping at lunch time maybe maybe there are additional students that would be helpful in other schools so maybe we could talk about that offline I think all the rest we've already talked about enrolling in the SoCal Ren program I think we're bringing the district to the 21st century which is all online and we got all our billing online now and we're enrolled in this great program that's going to help long-term and then of course we have our cafeteria subcommittee meeting and is very cool cuz dumb summer McBride who's on on the board she mentioned being in this committee and committed you working on this so that will help us Advance give me the word can a little faster hopefully but our next subcommittee meeting is June 2nd at 4 p.m. and it's the same length as this one for today I think we've already talked about all of this except I want to mention the user utility text we've put our finger on the numbers and it looks like will be credited I-40 around $40,000 just through SC for one year and I Kathy I'm going to go to the city to recover the two previous years of that and I to talk to the financial department I have their phone number but the ideas to recover I think Caroline and I calculated $85,000 from the city to City Tech Lisa Soldier I do but yeah I guess that you know we eat we can only try and it is something our school district is exempt from so it is I can't see I'm refusing that but what I also told the board is that this is $40,000 saved for the next year that we had him and I'm sure we could try to recover more than 3 years but I think that's as far as we can go building on Renaissance he is doing okay we're in a better place that I don't have to do anything but yeah I think how did it go good with all the staff and that's good to know that's very good to know so care more about that I I promised to send a you know end-of-the-year email updating you on any of these action items that are still in the works so we carry all of the AC Quagmire with their assist upgrade we were able to get the Linda campus back on 40% renewable energy starting I believe in March and during this school board meeting Robert with Psycho Killer move forward so I'm not sure if there is more steps to that but we're in the right direction and I I don't think we could have done it without the students that were interested in helping us with that so Dorian and then Bronwyn oh no are you have your hands up you're a lower your hands run wins you have a electricity bill if you're going to renewable energy utility plan is to clean power Alliance so the whole city was converted about 3 years ago and you know business commercial and residential were how to opt out and for a strange reason the Atlantic episode that you know the campus three schools with the most energy use they were up to the out completely and all the Mina remained on 100% renewable energy so it took us a long time to understand the history and all that and then there was a big Quagmire with the with sdn their system update so the one thing I wanted to kind of talk to the committee about is that we just got the numbers from CPA and it looks like it's going to cost a lot more to remain at the hundred percent renewable energy with CPA versus the hundred percent renewable energy the green the green rate with s c e and this is with very real like this week no numbers from this week so you know where I need to push the school district to get back on the CPA and it's going to cost us do we know the difference Caroline was it so there's only the Atlanta campus that is not it's out the median rate which is 40% currently and attempt to 100% if we stay with CPA that would cost the district $33,000 per year that's a nice we were with a hundred percent renewable energy from Ste that would be only $12,000 more that's. numbers that we received bad so I don't know what the district will decide but anyway it's it's not huge numbers when you think about the whole total bill which is around 100,000 a year so I think it's the simplest of the savings that we just made of not paying for the carrier anymore so I think that wasn't it's not a hard decision for the district to machen at school you better but we'll see what I guess what Robert what could we recommend I mean what do you it's been complicated to get back on the lady from CPA like I so I don't have to the email about 10 minutes ago or 20 minutes ago she responded that I don't know I haven't read it not really I'm what do you think we should recommend to the school district I mean if we're just looking at numbers it doesn't make a lot of sense to Stan a program that's a lot more however I believe Edison is going to go up every year pretty exponentially so you know will this CPA be lower at their feel like they there's a back and forth it used to be that CPA was less expensive so I I don't I don't really know what to recommend you know it would just be easier to stay with CPA and not in absorb the difference and not worry about it I think we won our school district to be on hundred percent mean energy. So whatever the fastest route is maybe I didn't even have any time I see you have been fluctuating over the years and sometimes smart sometimes this overtime is about the same or I don't know cuz it's perfect since you're busy once it has been like that I witnessed it as well when it is true so anyone have any recommendations no an important decision yeah I actually I've had a report from the Solar Company it looks like we in terms of kilowatt hours it represents about a quarter of the whole District energy but so is what is produced by solar energy in the district but still we have to pay for no money get it to the point where is now all that money whatever was bested it is now because it said it was going to go to the store but the cost of the school was going to be on board that's a good point in you know just being on a quarter time in this position we tackled pods for the future but we didn't like the Net Zero plan and the solar project I don't know all of the details in all honesty it wasn't selling 2014 7 and 15 KW solar system nobody needs are good questions I think that should be followed for sure that's why I role is important because no one's looking at all this in all honesty the school district doesn't have time to look at its bills at and we we've discovered things that are yeah where we will bring up things even on the water bills water bills went up during covid-19 and so we try to make recommendations to the school districts though all right screen again real quick so we get to a hot item of the day I'm going to hand it over You Caroline and Jeff but I just want to preface that in the last two years we have put together a document called the best practices and for wasting water and it is an amazing manual if you have not read it I would recommend you will learn everything you need to know about ccusd are City or region and what's happening in Wastewater and this year they Folk on energy and I'm going to let them do you want me to keep this page up Jennifer should I go back to the other I mean I guess I mean that's the last hour for energy and it's kind of in two parts do you know the half of it is talking about you know where our water come common energy comes from different sources and you know how it feeds into Culver City and then we talked about in Culver City and I think Caroline she kind of work talk about it but it's just like a overview of of you know how we're doing our best to save energy where we can and the one she too yes basically all this time in the background of some of the work we were doing we've been writing a Emmanuel and so the first two years included a saint I said waste and water and this year is energy that's why our research also this other generation numbers and all what was happening because I did this to you cars about what's going on in in the district and I just work more about you know defining what are the different sources of energy the renewable and nonrenewable the manual is not online yet because we've been trying to find someone to actually proof read it again for us if any of you is interested in doing that let us know and then I guess we will publish it in the web page for the teachers I feel like all the educator is he with you do your programs to the green ambassadors and things like that it's very startled I would say there's a lot of data information and links to different websites what else at the end we have this one pager with bullet points we did that already four ways and for water and it's basically maybe even bullet points ideas how to save conserve energy and things like that so that's also something we can hang out easily as a one pager for students so that they are reminded of turning off there computers and biking or taking the bus or different things like that yeah I don't know I guess it's very small sentence of documents I don't know if you would see it or you could just share the link in the chat box cuz I'm penny has volunteered to proofread it to okay I'll give it a try correct my English mistake. Yeah let's go afraid it would be good killing if we should where they can find those best practices for the previous years on our sustainability page I really feel like there's so much that went into this and I'm not sure how many people there have access or have read it and waiting probably to love somebody to proofread it so he's going to do it thank you thank you that's great I'll try my best and that's great you'll see it's it's I mean it's all written up so that it's just really a matter of maybe a few typos or if there any comments also so thank you for that the Culver City bus program Edwin spend too much time cuz I want to leave time for us to chat about Earth Day and different things but two thousand cards were distributed of which 57% were in the high school and between the Inception of program in it or when it was rolled out and now we there were 40 1794 tricks and half of that about half of that in the last quarter so that's very exciting there's an asp video I'm not sure to have time to do you guys want to see it or I can put it in the chat maybe I think that we've started already know I'm not sure maybe we have showed it later again we committed to when your pilot and it was a little bored was saying will resting in the second year and I'm not sure this the program is rolling out again as if we are paying for it and I think I work in a paper student for this registration registration I mean this is a collaborations that we are investing financially in this program but it is expanding to other school districts other colleges in the region a lot more access to you no further lines so it's straight if this is a regional program now and it's very exciting that were part of it we would have been left out and I would have to think about how it it really encouraged the students next year. take the bus more and they're going to have a plan for the parents a $30 pass when you look for the month when you travel with your child so that's pretty affordable Listen to I was going to say my he is passing loves accept me in and then maybe that's why I'm selling point for all the kids that he loves that I'm doing this on my own so pretty cool and then we just stay home and you just have to go pick him up since great in fact that a s b video does highlight those different things except they don't mention the carbon footprint of you know but that's okay so this is just one of the slides that they shared at the last meeting showing the exponential writer I think this is tap card transactions though I want to leave this I want to open this out because you guys did all the work for Earth Day although I should have kept the photos El Marino and El Rincon United things at the high school presented in front of 300 students at Robert Frost and we had those Stoney Billboards here and we had made piles recycling composting and there is still when that day that the students couldn't throw the trash on the ground like we wanted to we put them in buckets but there's Greg at El Rincon I think El Rincon you know really started something here is something special so I'm going to let you guys talk about your events if you like I'm sad that we didn't get that Hedgehog in that picture oh yeah do you guys want to share what you did Claudia Gregor I think Craig just stepped out so what he was going to say but yeah I see the picture of the Hedgehog and the lizard there from somebody know we brought them Echo station 902 so they went to the bank on Friday best and they came to a marinus part of our parents week festivities and we did an assembly actually to assembly because we have so many students so we needed that we wanted to the kids do I see interact with the animals so we we did that and that was a huge hit with the kids and the parents that make everyone loved it so next year we already decided we're going to bring them back for when we do a week festivities but we also and we also launched that green ambassadors program that Greg is spearheading. But it was that guy huge thing for us to actually get that rolling and we might sit on Earth week and we had a lesson that day it's still like very small because like this one is a few classrooms but it's been such a success that they already told us for next pandemic year to expand it to all the classrooms to bring in more students from each classroom so they there a supportive and we've had two lessons so it won't only has also been helping us that the last lesson was this weekend so we did the garden we realized it was just like a natural fit to do it that green ambassadors lessons at the Garden so we're going to plan more more things with Dorian for next year and other activities that we had that week we had any waste collection we all that famous utensils collection they're still here in my garage but we had a lot of them I went to drop them off by Grace Lutheran and and then Dorian did her activity. Do you want to talk about what you did that same weight made a giveaway and we went with the speed we had both that had both been in the garden and drive them and give them away and bought a whole bunch of seeds and gardening advice and swarmed us like locusts it was so so I was fighting everyone the whole week was really successful they did a great job that's amazing so that's that's our summary of wait wait... Have fun night I think we waste a lot of this ability for the committee especially since we haven't had a committee for the last few years and it meant a lot to us and we want it to get that disability so now like other parents on campus teachers are like okay this is why you do so we're hoping next year that would that support we're going to like running a lot more activities I think it's great and you had that custodian, yeah we had the most forgot we had custodian recognition which you guys have suggested it so what we were trying to do a lunch for them it was just like just sickly really hard so what we ended up doing was Dorian supported with this too but we we gave the for custodian gift card $25 each so they could go get lunch and we had a meeting with them and we wanted to talk with them and work famous partners because we are doing this together and it was just really feel silly we've been s a year we're going to try and have that cash when is come to one of our assemblies talked with the students about the work they do and how they can help them and it was it was like a very rewarding and they were like super super happy because I don't think I really get much recognition or anything I think we should make that a tradition every year after Earth week I mean it might be useful even twice if you didn't then you'd have them on your side can I ask how you funded those cards was it just personal donations or may I use the garden budget I use the budget from the garden but next year the green committee is like fun. but this year they didn't have their own budget so I gave her a big bag produce to all the custodians at El Marino because they were really really helpful in transporting all of our green waste from the garden to the proper staying and helping Aspen trash can custodian rock the rock star and the kids all know they're me and they're like the cool I love that I'm Alison you do you want to share what you wrote Oh I was responding to sorry somebody was talking about the bus like how they other parents are teachers weren't aware of the program it was really good I think the city has a lot of Charlie and came to that meeting so our school PTA General Association meetings every other month and in between we decided to have these kind of open for him and so for the first open Forum of the school year we had the transportation liaison and she gave her little to give us feel as yet a video I think we even maybe Carolina even showed the video but yeah that the SP students made I mean the people is on Zoom those bright like 20 people or maybe not even that many 10 10 15 people but if it's something that the principal goes to like it we have like he's coffee and Pat's at the principal dies or any other more like sponsored event but something that the principal is running and you know there's going to be more attendance and just because it's 10-15 minutes max and it really does tell explain how program and how to get the car the front office what's Raiders score cricket anyone else well AR formula for the Earth Fest week is pretty good I mean is there are there any recommendations to change the way it's set up for San Bernardino she made us she went to the talent show at the high school on stage she sits on the ground and she start like throwing her trash all around her and and then I hit we had like the Bell the school bell and then I walk out and I'm like Hey guys does this look familiar and they all laughed it was really funny and then it was just about I don't even remember what I said was like a six-minute speech but I think the the 300 student was really cool like students came afterwards and today I learned some stuff in kind of connecting them did the whole trash world yeah oh Penny you saw which one did you see the at the talent show I thought you guys at the high school talent show I'm not a yeah I'm not a comedian or anything yet yeah by any stretch hard for me but good message Alyssa Dennis I mean okay so then moving along quickly I want to thank you all really my Liaisons my parents my teachers students this year every time you had them so inspire do you like my dog I want to let you know thank the head of facilities and all that truly board members we they actually brought a lot more support this year for student clubs on the add Foundation Kathy Vargas we love working with you and of course the special thanks to Jeff Caroline Caroline I couldn't do this without you I'd be a crazy lady by your three and so just opening it up we have about 15 minutes and just went to go for it. How do we save you how do we keep you what can we do what we do you know I I don't want to say I know I know I do love this role I think there's a lot to be done and frankly creating this Regional work with the other coordinators in different school districts has been so eye-opening and enlightening and and they're all underwater like they're one person and they're they're freaking out and you know so it it's not an there's so much to do even for one person but that's not even the level of investment of our school districts so I just think pushing for the full-time even if it's political even crazier things have been done than trying to hire a sustainability coordinator I think and I think I was wondering if they call the union they have another word for them at the name but I'm wondering if going to actually present to them and maybe before the end of June before I leave to go to share with them what how much of what we're doing is educational I get there it's two parts the facilities and Edge station in that if we only sent someone to you know a school teacher is someone with a teacher's credential we would lose the whole facilities part which is a huge part of what we do district-wide so I think mr. Chen is trying to figure that part out and he needs some guidance also on where to keep the sustainability position I was even telling them they have this one company called duh dun who wrote the they think you are like lighting upgrades and all that and Isaac hire the sustainability coordinator through them like they're already pre-approved and who cares how they do it we just want them to do it so the issue is the teacher's you're not a teacher the teachers union has a problem that I'm not sure either Union plays a role will they said it at the board meeting and after I presented they were saying you know if you're considering any new position you should be coming to see us to tell us about that that we negotiate and my understanding is that there isn't a great understanding of of why there should be someone in this position and so that tells me that they just don't understand will what what what doing and so it's it's all sit my it may just be about communicating and so I don't know if they meet in the next few weeks what we're doing is in North Carolina with whatever we're given quarter time until where we no longer accept the commission but yeah I feel like they are like it's working okay that way why would we hire someone full-time and spend more money on it and and trying to convince we would just agree on. I did recommend that if they can't figure out the position at least to keep the quarter time going in if it's not me then that means an RFP and they have to find you know they have to send that out and it's it's a processing took it it took them six months the first year and the second year to keep me so I just hate to see that there was no initiative last year Mr Chong and superintendent told me that the position is renewed bad recorder time this year that if there's not even that so we're kind of back to square one but just yourselves this is open ya Dorian so the union is in the weigh-ins what shape I'm I'm still not understanding why the union is a problem when you hire stuff at coz and it cracks me up Penny right cuz I have no syrians in this I'm a contractor but they let you know the position needs to be I guess defined and designed especially if it's a new one. I'm sorry I can't help it I'm not I wasn't aware of that I'm surprised to hear that and with all the new positions that they're creating I'm surprised they wouldn't create this position cuz it seems so important is that a human can order you a new position and making sure that it is either what are the jobs created by then I am the whole process But ultimately it does get whatever that's fine I think that's fine is if we understand the process then we can actually work with them I think I'm going to provide my contract from the first year as the scope of work and then you know that I don't know what else they need to design a position so Sandrine what I'm thinking so why I have changed jobs right so I now work for the UCLA labor occupational safety and health center and Union you know can get a bad rap and I think that they know what your position is about and your role in supporting the teachers with the roles that they have is something that they would find valuable if they knew what that was about you know you add to you facilitate some of the things that the teachers provided the school you and Rich their curriculum you and Rich see students experience with the work that you do that adds to the you know that support teachers that are in the union and so I think that just like you said and you have the right instincts communicating with them about what you do the fact that I actually what you do is not coverage you need more you know there needs to be what time for it you need their support perhaps to even support your position they may end up being becoming your allies as opposed to your they are not necessarily and I all my work is around. professional health and safety union labor rights in preparedness for a Disaster Response all of that and you know depending on how we need to be in included in the converter exactly exactly what was said exact position being created Music want to be involved and I see their exclusion is probably sufficient actually intact including them Flight Support you to get more and more of what you want to keep you and keep you at a higher percentage because you and Rich and you support their Union employees you know you support their members by making a t is job easier more applicable things like that needs to know that we need to be under facilities like that's super important and not on the educational side because went in a public and jury and you had your hand up for a while I'm sorry my hands but then I thought I really wanted to say something and I really want to communicate to you and everyone on this call that I feel like in this year you all influence of Marino in a way that like Moreno has not been agreeing School in the past it hasn't had taken much initiative enough time since and I feel like this committee and you all have given us so we even tired of so much and you changed climate of the school and you may not know that but you really truly have been fired myself and Claudia and Greg to like and he's given us the given us the connection in which to build all of this infrastructure that we have never had an safe before and I don't know who I have to tell that to or if it will even matter but I think you're right I think our entire team will a that is very very kind I appreciate that I you know I don't realize the scope of what we do and we just do our best and there were some amazing words from the students the ones that ruled the green New Deal the Human Rights Watch it was very tight Delena who is the head of a f b I can't tell you it was never solved. Like I am right now it's so yeah I mean you all my work is only as good as you guys are out there actually you know putting it in action so we get to all of work at different levels and I think that's the fourth of our committee and it's you know I think it's important stuff like I hate to see our district just not find the resources and yeah just not I mean mister Chen just rolled out the green new deal with the students and press and city council at the vending Museum on Earth Day and in that it says he needs to hire in the same building coordinators so is there school because he like you made a big big deal out of the green New Deal that they did and if there's nothing behind that then what is it I mean in this when you do the district is supposed to commit to hire a full-time person as a sustainability coordinator but when are they going to do that go ahead. quickly summarize so we should contact mr. Tran encourage him to let the green New Deal let him know how great you are and then recommend that you be under the facilities Department we are supposed to have conversations about that so you know that's kind of a it was a private conversation will just say how much maybe how much work we've done both on the educational and Facilities site maybe just some passing and I would copy Robert Quinn cuz he's he's really also in charge and you know are accorded time is what they have been satisfied with and is of all the work we've done on that budget and we've done a lot like in the last three years that with the water upgrades and it is an absolute Miracle to me what you guys do women have accomplished because every time like one little thing gets whispered and it has an inkling of logic it will be implemented like the milk getting is no longer mandatory or like just like meatless Mondays like all those things that weren't they would not no one else would have made these I think what also is important to communicate is the elements of continuity I've been in this District are awhile and there's been different coordinators and every time we lose someone and then they find a replacement will take a couple of years or whatever and then everybody starts from scratch again I know what you've done obviously is working it's not like it's not working it's working and it would be a shame that it all comes to hauled and then comes a new person and reboots everything and all of these wonderful people are saying right now about the impact you've had how implementable and you know everything you've done has been has work that that continues is very important and you have your connections with all the schools and you are connected to the science teacher and you're connected to the system and you understand it they can't beat the turnover is not helpful I need to just stop thinking that way and they thought about that before you know I've been around something for a while I write my three kids have gone to El Marino Middle School in high school my oldest is 23 so that's how long ago I've been at the school and the turnover harms this program every time it is it's not good so as you right the stop this turnover deal you know by run when thank you I'm sorry I just want to say merci beaucoup and it was on and I hope to work with you all again okay alright bye bye Penny thank you very much
