Lt. Gregg Karl of the Arlington County, Virginia, Fire Department demonstrates three different types of victim carries to a class of CERT trainees. This video is recommended for use in the CERT Train-the-Trainer course to demonstrate effective instructional techniques for teaching victim carries.

okay now that we've discussed the different list and Carries where to go and demonstrative starting first with the chairlift  what I do before I use a chair to lift any patient's check the chair to make sure that it's stable only the forward on its front eggs lean on it make sure there's not a lot of flex I'll take it back onto the back legs same thing check for flexing the chair then finally I'll sit down in the chair Rock back just to make sure it feels stable  I have two volunteers punch have a seat in the chair  hey what's your victim into the chair you want to give them something to do something to distract them keep your mind off what's going to happen I brought spot of water thank you  what should hold on to that and don't let that go okay they want to split everything that's going to happen exactly so what I'm going to do channel 3 I'm going to tip the chair back and we'll pick you up and we'll move you to come around to the back of the chair put one foot against the leg of the chair to stabilize it are the size of the chair in a comfortable position is important that you have the person with the better upper body strength do this part because it's going to be the heavier portion of the left go grab the chair on three I'm going to tip you back do not reach out one two three tip the chair back feel like to come around the front what down and grab the legs of the chair a little bit lower good will pick up on three one two three and I'll move the victim we'll set the patient down on three one two three and then down again one two three the chairlift is great for how do you may not be able to move around so well on their own or the elderly victim because now gives him someplace to sit you're not taking them out of the situation turn there are in having them sit on the breed have a chair to sit on  nice job thank you for your help if you guys go back to your seats  are there any questions yes I would think that if I would that person in that situation that I'd be a little bit nervous or maybe flailing around so if that would happen What would do gently what happens with victims when they start receiving help they'll calm down and relax because they're being removed from the situation and if not you can always just duck taping to the Aaron V on your way Suave the five you in the front come on up here who do the log roll of like a carry  I need a volunteer on the ground  so what you do is you take the blanket  spread it out along the side of the victim make sure that you have enough up around the head and neck area you'll take this and very tightly maqedoni the side of the patient okay went to log-roll the patient will always roll them onto and uninjured side so is this arm up  I'll come around I'll stabilize the head and neck and seemed to be on my call Will Roll the patient if you want to come around 2 side  okay if you want to grab the shoulders you have the hips you have the legs for roll the patient over on three where's the blanket for underneath the patient in the world patient back onto the blanket he ready one two three  can you go to pull the blanket out fell through roll evicted back one two three okay if you roll the sides in towards the patient now  like this yes keep it nice until you get as close to the patient can  ideally this would be lifted with 6 people or realistically it mainly before of you make sure you have a good grasp of the blanket your hands are a little far apart in a lift with your legs down to your back lifting on three one two three  who's the patient and equally as important will go down three one two three good job victim do you have anything for them absolutely that was it was a great lift you guys I was stable I was almost so I had it just felt very the victim by his shoulders lift the victim up this point you can rest them against your knees command you can go and grab onto their wrists this point I'm going to watch you to step between his legs  I'm actually going to want you to makes me a little bit easier when we're going to be going over some rough terrain or downstairs to be facing each other so if you want to squat down then grab them laundry will pick him up one two three if this point now you can rest them on your hips and that's a little easier for you to carry and then we're going to go backwards towards me pretty one two three In CERT in Action, a fierce storm has struck the local community. CERT members activate in their neighborhood, set up an Incident Command Post and assess damage throughout the area. They use their CERT skills to respond to damage and injured victims in the local community center, managing the situation until professional responders are able to arrive. This video provides a useful introduction to the CERT concept for new program participants and others who may be interested in the program. This video will also support the material presented in the CERT Basic Training course Unit 6: CERT Organization. CERT trainers will be able to use the video to start a dialogue about CERTs use of ICS and other critical features of successful team operations.
