oh Acklin your school has just experienced an earthquake you are a member of your school search and rescue team do you know what to do hi I'm Joel Barn can just like you I'm a classroom teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District today you'll see how and the methods they used to do their job safely actively  every school in the Los Angeles Unified School District has a safe School plan Volume 2 of that plan is a standardized template for all schools news is they respond to emergencies  by law every year each School in California must form a school safety planning committee to update their safe School plan and make sure the plan meets the needs of all the school stakeholders  as part of that preparation process a team of teachers and staff has identified as the search and rescue team in the event of an earthquake or other major disaster it is critically important that schools account for all students and staff what should happen immediately when an earthquake strikes everyone immediately goes into duck cover and hold all students and staff should be under a table or chair holding on to the miniature leg protecting their head and neck from flying objects away from Windows and bookshelves the can be a source of flying debris  when the shaking stops every when does a quick self-evaluation to check for injuries and the teacher will ask is everyone okay okay is anybody teacher will check to see if the exit route to the assembly area is clear and direct students to carefully exit the room and four injured students who can walk should do so can students can assist injured students and students with special needs  soon as you cannot be moved because of injuries should be told that help will be directed to them immediately the classroom teacher should always work to do the greatest good for the greatest number of students without endangering anyone  when exiting classroom the teacher should leave the door open and unlocked unless there's a fire near the room and use whatever marking system the school has in place to show where is someone left in the room every teacher should have a buddy teacher who will check on them and a go kit personal emergency supplies when the teacher and students arrive at the assembly area the student should go to the designated place on the field and he injured students should be taken to the first aid station and the teacher must report the status of all students to the assembly area Command Post  when's the teacher accounts for all students and has delivered them safe to the assembly area then he or she can turn the responsibility of the class over to a colleague and begin the assignment on the search and rescue team the same school planned schools to organize their response to an emergency by using the standardized emergency management system is the management system for emergencies used by police and fire departments it stipulates that one person The Incident Commander will be in charge of the emergency response neck commander most likely the principal has for Chiefs that report in with specific areas of responsibilities operations planning and intelligence Logistics finance and administration the search-and-rescue teams fall under the authority of the operations chief  the teams take direction from the operations Chief and report back to that same person  operation will relay any information to The Incident Commander the search and rescue team has tools in the emergency been if they can use to open doors and windows these tools are simple hand tools that do not require special skills  some of them are bar a sledgehammer a bolt cutter hand saw pliers screwdrivers markers chalk and most importantly protective Gear helmets gloves and goggles every team has an even number of numbers because for every team member that enters a doorway there must always be another team member station outside for safety rescue  each team also has a leader who's in charge of Team safety and radio communications to the operations chief  team safety is guiding principle behind all activities  someone wait at the door While others searched the room remember to keep your right shoulder to the wall so that you will complete a full Gretchen always end up back at the same door you came in  keeping the same shoulder next to the wall and always going in the same direction allows you to be able to do a complete go to the whole room without becoming lost or disoriented by debris or Darkness search and rescue team members should always be on the lookout for hazards is it going to be building on campus you must make sure that it is safe for you to enter do not enter buildings that have extreme damage and may not be structure play complete also live electrical lines pipes leaking gas or water spilled chemicals or anything else they could end your team members whenever you find these conditions it is important to notify the operations chief  search and rescue team should always first search classroom that have been identified as having victims  when team members enter the doorway they should call out to see if the victim is conscious the victim can direct the searches to the right location is here no response they should stop and listen for signs of life  when The Rescuers find a victim they need to work together to free and remove the patient the goal for the team is to extricate the victim quickly and safely one number can lift play way to breathe while another moves the victim to safety  if more help is needed the team leader can call for another search and rescue team to assist the team members can move the patient to the first aid station  when the team enters a room they use the universal search and rescue team markings turn the door to show that there are Rescuers inside  in the event of an Aftershock anyone will know that there are people in that room  when the team what is the room they completely X to show that they are out and record the date and time and any Hazard they found  when team members use the radio it is in to keep all conversations brief and discreet do not use the name of or condition of any student on the radio since you never know who else may hear your hey there should be a broken leg right there  team member should remember that they part of the Operations Branch of the incident command system and they can be reassigned to other duties once search-and-rescue has been completed  play the number School search and rescue team is an important responsibility in a major contribution to the Safety and Security of the students and staff on your campus  Because emergency for hardness is a perishable skill you will need to practice regularly with your team to make sure you're ready when you are called emergency response training and it's a free 16-hour class that teaches you about disaster preparedness  Any teacher that takes the cert class can apply for a solid Point Credit from more information
