I'll just record it right now sorry about the technical issues and back to screen sharing so welcome ever fun and so we can introduce ourselves please tell me your school your name your school and affiliation to the school and then we will jump right into our guest speaker we're very excited to have Robert Quinn and Chris Dunn. ask about ccusd submission to NetZero then I'll give you a progress report on our green initiatives explain how we're trying to get the word out about our sustained elodie committee Culver City has a new mobile recycling set up for that I want to share with you also how you can add sustainability to the curriculum we have some ideas for you we will give you an update on grades of green campaign also share a green tip on Energy savings since we're talking about NetZero today will also make some holiday shopping recommendations and then we need some feedback about how to get our best practices translated into Spanish so hopefully you get some information from you Asher few sustainability events that are out are that you could sign up for and then most importantly I want to open the discussion much longer than last time where we covered a lot more things about last year and our goals for this year so we want I want to give you are the space to do that so let's get started here we go featured guest speaker Roberts can you stop sharing so I can share Culver City school I do have a son at CCMS so Jack and hoping your son agree that I got that right and but certainly as my work with the Education Foundation I work on behalf of all schools throughout Farragut Elementary School my son's a first grader and then I have her preschool daughter and I'm just on the sustainability maybe they're excellent glad you could make it Kelly's come to you hello my name is Kendra I'm a parent at El Rincon and I'm filling in for Veronica who was not available tonight so I'm this is my first time here okay great thanks welcome and I think a Chanel we already heard from you so hopefully the line is better I'm so Robert do you share your screen at this time 21 22 years and both of my kids also went through graduated in 2008 to 2011 we have Chris done here tonight Who's going to help us presents on the energy master plan on getting ccusd to NetZero Chris works for Harrison Associates better they have been managing the facility master plan project we've been working on for about 2 years now which is an overall plan for how everything in our facility besides that everything has to be developed over the next 10 20 30 years who basically keep up with the time and as of subsidiary to that there's an energy master plan the energy master plan is what we're going to do getting us to NetZero NetZero we're using no more energy than we're producing and you can do that in two ways right you can either produce more on-site via systems like solar or you can cut your energy so the energy master plan is looking at our facilities and how we can address both sides of that equation to get us down to NetZero there are legal requirements in California right now I think the absolute deadline is something like 30 years like 2050 incremental points that we have to hit along the way I believe our plan actually gets us all the way there by 2040 so about 10 years ahead of schedule which is a little leeway over the course of the energy it's posted on the website underneath the facility master plan there's two parts of it this is this is the main homepage of the energy master plan and it goes through a lot of the campus reports about what we found when we looked at our campus but I just wanted to jump to the actual net I keep saying that zero zero net Energy report and I'm going to let Chris take it from there can explain well thank you very much Robert I don't know how else I have to say at this point I mean you did a pretty good job there one thing I'd like to commend ccusd on is there willingness to get into this we have the second zero net energy master plan in the state of California so not many school districts jumped on it as quickly as Culver City ad we knew the requirements were coming little bit serendipitous that we were starting the master plan of the same time however you know it's still shows a lot of foresight to get involved in it right away so I was mentioning you've got to basically produce what you're going to use there's a caveat that I always find a little frustrating is that you don't you have to have to produce more than you use because you have to produce what purchase and you lose energy over transmission lines so if you were buying x amount of kilowatts you'll get 95% of that at the site I see after produce the X amount not the 95% so I always thought it was a little bit unfair but it's either rules are written so they're about 21 executive orders that have rolled out of past couple years that impact the Net Zero planning not all of them affect schools but they all affect government buildings little bit on residential not too much on commercial but it's coming out so and it's raw mention if we do these things there's no way for us to produce what we use so we have to do a combination of both reduce our energy usage for more while we're doing why we go through and look at the mess and it has to be done in conjunction with the master plan because you have to know what you're going to have in order to know what energy you're going to have what you going to need so you can be at zero so as we develop a master plan we're looking at all the future buildings so we might be adding buildings modernizing buildings throughout the master plan if you want to click on one of the school sites Robert everybody can see a master plan where are they do I go back to the other page now I keep looking all the way down and then they'll be in so the pages Roberts leading you through tell a story about why why not zero help what it's all for a lot of information you know and it's probably more than we have time to go through go through but as we get to the cool sites we might be adding a new whatever and maybe a new multi-purpose room a new cafeteria whatever maybe we'll have to know what we're doing in order to know what energy we're going to need it's not showing me the school sites Chris if you click on actually you're into the next time you got to go back sorry guys I had this figured out before if you click on home and then click all the way through Tablas reports nobody of school sites it's not showing what did we do we may have to revisit this yeah I might be a little risky if it was back here I may have skipped ahead of screen that's still a work in process f y and you can kind of see why we're trying to come up with oh there we go okay so there's Culver City High School in a little closer than I like to do it by the big screen in the but on the left there you can see the map of the high school it does tell you all the buildings you know what we're going to do so as we're looking at this we've had a look at what we're going to build right you look at what we're going to build we know those buildings are going to be to sign to be Net Zero we're going to make sure they have their energy efficient they're going to have solar thermal wind whatever is appropriate for the area that were in those are kind of easy one right what we've got to look at it we're we're doing renovations we do a master plan we look at a renovation we try to decide whether it's worth it who knocked the building down and start over or renovated and you've always got a balance this with the overall cost you know this master plan or Culver City is is a pretty expensive ticket to do everything that they've asked for are you can't just wipe slate clean and start over so we do the renovations you got to look for areas where you can put in energy conservation measures energy conservation measures that we have kind of come into a lot of levels there's a lot of easy ones that we can do that are fairly low cost and those are things like daylighting control occupancy control things that shut off lights shut off mechanical units when when people Music Row Savannah pretty simple ones there's the MidCoast ones that might be changing out the old fan coil unit the old HACC system that we have or more energy efficient ones like the vrf system that we put in so we recently installed brf at for schools Middle School the high school Farragut in El Rincon some of the other schools have slightly older units that aren't as efficient that's kind of a mid-course one where it's going to save you a lot of money you know over time there's a capital of cost upfront obviously to install it but it's going to take you money in the long run then there's the higher-cost item some of the higher cost items might be sealing the building envelope are that's easy part of its stuff we got the older buildings at Culver City some of these are 50 60 70 years old single pane windows the buildings are actually not very airtight so you can see all the buildings but you got to replacing the windows becomes expensive adding insulation becomes not viable because there's no place to put it. space so you got to decide what's the best option and it's a balancing act while you do all these things so as you're figuring out what you're going to build what you can afford to build new buildings versus Renovations what renovation what energy conservation measures we can put in on those buildings that are so cost-effective you want to look at replacing equipment when it's at the end of its useful life you know not right away not at all at once because it becomes too cost-prohibitive again it was we do this you know we're constantly this is an iterative process to figure this out so if we look at all the buildings were going to have come 2040 we look at the energy we think we're going to need so we run into we look at the energy we think we're going to need by then that we find out we're still not a net-zero we start plugging in different energy conservation measures and I doubt you're still not it at Net Zero so then how to look at generation right so one of the mistakes a lot a lot of people make when they look at energy generation is Lil just slap solar all over the place where you can't do it everywhere and it's it's not viable it in stock cost effective when you look at rooftops we have to look at where we can put them it's frustrating from me some blues you know practical and on the ground when somebody else catch up will just cover the whole roof with the roof here I come Culver City under most buildings have HV AC units have access doors have Pap ways to get places I got to look at a roof it got to find a roof that has enough space to put in a solar array that makes sense most of the older buildings are not structurally built to have solar rays up there we have to get all of our plans approved through division of the state architect they are not the most um like to try intrude technology so it becomes cost-prohibitive to put some of those type of things in some of the buildings we have so you've got to look for the arrays that make sense develop that starts the kind of a you know like I said a balancing act it's a game and it or process to come up with that in our case we have enough guilt things assuming we go for with the master plan which requires money we have enough buildings on the campus to generate enough DVDs which in our case will use solar rays on the rooftop on the building week and put it on and with the energy conservation measures that we have we can get to NetZero by 2040 Robert if you clip to the tabular on before the reports without all the numbers over here I think it's a if you click on the one that's a storyboard this is actually my favorite part of the whole thing that I think shows the picture as pretty much as well as it can be done in one Fell Swoop so the green area on the is the energy cost for Culver City and if you look about the middle of the chart you know where we received about our timeline the rules require us to go back in the past so that's why it goes back to 1990 middle of a chart basically deals with about now if you need a little blue line that kind of continues up off to the right that would be the energy cost if we did nothing so you can see that we're obviously adding buildings but like I said we're adding efficient buildings are the Costco's up because nothing ever goes down in this world right but it doesn't go up ridiculously because we are adding energy efficient building but that assumes we do nothing bottom you'll see the yellow bar along the bottom and that shows when we install different solar arrays a different places again it timed with the master plan so when jobs will be done that's not all at once but it's homes in and starts making a difference and then if you look a little bit below that you'll see the two little green bars no show the different energy conservation measures I talked about and when we could install some so the combination of those thanks we're saving money on existing buildings or adding solar rays to come up with generation and you can see the pretty significant drop off that we hit by 2030 and then is Robert was mentioning by 2040 we get down NetZero now this is a plan right and no master plan up and doing schools for over 20 years no master plan that I've ever seen or developed as ever come to fruition as planned it's always changes to it so it's a guideline you know but you got to start somewhere you may have original plan me of that building X for some reason building X is not wanted by the people when it's that time so we don't do that one that had a big solar array adjust for that you didn't got to be you know flexible as you design these things and plan for these things but it does show again forward making planning develop the process over the next 20 years when is Chris thank you Kristen Robert does anyone have any questions I meant I put I put the link to the the master plan in the chat so you can copy that out and have it for you it's a lot of information to go through when you have a lot of free time but sorry I didn't mean to interrupt your question this is what the future going solid but where we at this time and why being that we're not on campus I'm just kind of curious how much are we saving and can this positive that was saving get us down to the negative I don't think that makes sense we are we talked about this in in in some budget reports and we did because we did see some utility costs Savings in the spring from people not being on campus and not using the HVAC as much as an overall cost for last fiscal year it stayed roughly the same because we had added so many HVAC systems last year so then the seven or eight months that we were in school as much energy as maybe we did in the year before so it's not the energy we did save gave us a little bit of financial flexibility at the end of last year but won't really have any effect on Vendetta zero story forward I'd like to add is Culver City as a district is actually fairly efficient one of the metrics that is you NetZero is Cy which is the energy usage index which is a ratio of square footage to energy use and the district as a whole is in the low twenties I think it's 23 different schools are different numbers that's actually a really good number overall so the district is not in bad shape obviously there's room for improvement obviously if you you know save seven $800,000 a year on utility cost I going to NetZero you can have a lot more dollars in your general fund so there's advantages but just know that Culver City is not a not horrible they're in really good shape having a reasonably low ey a question in the chat box ECM you just mentioned the environmental all right those are ways that we approached money on buildings such as putting in occupancy sensors adding insulation changing out single pane windows to you know double plane double pane windows so that's the whole state on existing buildings are numbers to energy generation and Energy savings is that a couple years ago we used couple years ago we've all the lights in the district at ladies using prop 39 money we were placed a number in addition to the all the lights we replaced older air condition older hchd at my bio Nolin how and a little bit at El Rincon okay excellent when we add new windows and we Seymour the building what happens when are we going to it's going to cost us more energy later on let's just say we back in school and it's May June summertime are we going to spend more money on energy now to keep the building cooler or we going to spend less money keep in the building cooler when we get the eight turn the AC on instead of cool they're going to stay longer well it's not a there's no easy answer to that because it's not a not all situations of the same so it's not a one thing that happens right so if you add more windows and you don't cover them up you use less light right so there's more daylighting so I'm studies are showing the children are students learn better with natural light as opposed to artificial light but you also want to make or that you have the appropriate shade landscape you know trees keep building school to keep the heat island effect the way to we're not necessarily using all the classrooms in the summertime and Culver City is not the hottest place in the world so there is less in the impact the real thing is there's going to be better insulation right so not just changing the windows but you add insulation to change the windows you add Landscaping you got daylighting use less light it's not one thing every thing there is a cause and effect and everything effects everything else is the combination okay thank you great does anyone else have any comments or questions before we move along yeah I do hi so these are just so I see that your indoor air quality indicators I didn't drop them all down but I noticed that I've been CO2 are measured or are indicators of indoor air quality I think there was a couple more are these monitored like how are you what are you monitoring them regularly or their spot checks are you using them make sure they follow you know ask what about them and if we can have the answer thank you those were done as objects that we don't have sensors built into the system and then the other eye is is that just these are just background how do you say that you wouldn't do the master plan to do to explain why you're you know one of the reasons why this is being done or is any of this is measured at all it's the first one it's background explain why this is a benefit exist and we want to be able to show that this is not just a cost-savings benefit you know there's a cost savings there's environmental savings it's also going to help the students so this is a holistic approach impact my final question have you implemented the system in another school district old is our school district the first one that you going to implement the system in I'm just curious well we've implemented elements of it in different places so the executive orders for zero net energy are fairly new so and all school districts have different levels of Tolerance energy around how green they want to be so I'm at some districts that are Ultra green and want to do everything as leave platinum and I have some districts that don't know what Lee Williams Arts of it everywhere but this is one of the first this is the first Net Zero Energy mask and I've ever done but that's the case for almost everybody because the rules are new thank you so much you appreciate both you and Robert coming to talk to us about this site I think we could spend a lot more time with this is an introduction to the topic so maybe we'll have you at another time this year I hate you I want to thank Chris for participating tonight he and his team are actually working nights right now to put in that new air cleaning purification system for covid-19 have his guys get back to go back to work on that thank you so much I'll write the different people who need to leave so I want to get through the next two slides so here I'll even put so these are the projects that we're looking at right now in fact I want to ask if the if the teacher is going to leave cuz I want to do yours first send so adding sustainability to the school curriculum actually Caroline is going to talk to us about that very briefly Carolina I have class at 6 so I'll stay right till 6 how's that cuz then I would have started with what we're doing and then I guess with this is fine we can start with the okay it's the last year I know that many ask him if we could add something ability somehow to the school to recover and so we've looked into it for this year and we have found that us Green Building Council has actually developed workshops for kids that are free classes on sustainability for elementary students in for high schools and it's available so it's going to be through and I eat during their class actually they're inviting the speaker from your CBC who going to talk about sustainability to the students I'll let you needs to do is to click on the speaker request form and just faded out name is going to be for next year 2021 paroxetine already application so they can do the schedule already and I think it's a great opportunity for party cheese Elementary class is I believe 5 minutes and it's 90 minutes for the high school presentation would be interested we need to send them that link so they can I tell you requested in there is another another option for only you think it's Elementary School's it's the virtual version of the environment of Defenders assembly I believe some of the school have done it last year I'm not very familiar with it but if you need more information you can call this number and I don't like I need parents yet that want to give any feedback on if they have Donuts no okay alright well listen to information for the minutes and you're welcome to reach out to these people just out of curiosity do we have a speaker for every class for the five classes we have or just will they only be speaking in one class I think it's her how to class yeah but if you want to like that you can find classes and you want to have it at the same time maybe you could do that but I think you can like if you eat if you have five you can request it five times and you will have five speakers thank you alright thank you so much Caroline simple you know projects that we're working on right now I was invited to the task force for outside learning yesterday was my first meeting a group of parents have come together and set up a project two for the students to come back outside and so I'm going to see if I can help make it more sustainable in any way I can we met with wonderful Julie Garcia and mark from Food Services Julie's here today and we are exploring actually I had a call with Pavilions today and we received a grant from them and so we're trying to see if we can get send the grab-and-go food that the you know the families are our have access to right now there's a lot of plastic involved so we were just kind of looking at where we could cut the plastic one of them would be to have a paper bags and so the assistant manager I spoke with seems very interested in helping us so I'll see you know now the manager has to get involved but we're working on now that's and then we talked at to Auto Chlor last year and then this year kind of picking up where we left off about you know the idea of having a dishwasher pilot program so weird so you know there's still some questions there but we just started like a month ago again with this committee so we're trying to do as much as we can with the time we have so we since the calf are you at the high school is up and running it has never stopped and we commend them for doing that the whole time during covid but we want to help them set up the three streams of the trash Recycling and composting and then the appropriate dumpster service with the city so I've contacted the city and then we're Gathering the needs to buy you know for additional containers and then we'll set that up properly indoors with the three different colored liners we are also looking at all the utility programs in rebates last year we benefited from a Golden State's water retrofit program you know and we did get a grant for the water filling stations but they haven't been bought yet so I see Catherine Catherine you and I asked a question So currently we have the three streams of waste at the high school but the problem is the custodians and I'm not picking on the custodian but they all go into one trash receptacle so we have it set up but it's not happening that way I just want to point out it's one thing to have the setup it's another thing to have the follow through and I think we also have to look into where this is going in LA because as we know globally with recycling a lot of it as being out of the country and it's causing a lot more problems than it's a it's a bigger cost that a benefit I would say environmentally so I just kind of want to say I think we need to look a little bit more closely at that read idea especially the compost but it does need to be set up so it's being treated the appropriate way so we spend a lot of time last year on this and we've identified all the problems and you know Solutions one of them is key in his education but it's also set up and then we're going to do something very simple as having three colored liners black for trash blue for recycling and transparent for composting and when the custodian comes with their cart with that one cart they throw all the different colored bags in there and then they'll know which ones put it into the city dumpster so we've that's how we're fixing it is by doing it that way we're also again print a lot of posters and have more videos in fact we're looking into doing a video for custodians with custodians in it and then we're going to be to work hopefully with APPA or try to get some student projects up and running as well so it's sort of multifaceted to address this you know system and we also created one page best practices for every stakeholder in the waste stream so that's parents it's even visitors its teachers and staff custodian and student so everyone gets there page about how to do this properly so we worked hard on this and we're just trying to let you know we're rolling it out again it's a bit strange while school is you know not in place but we can do it at least serve as a pilot for the cafeteria area Julie I don't know if you want to say anything about this or or Robert no so I think Julie was trying to chime in my statue no like Catherine said the systems in place difficult to make sure that they have the colored bags and that they're putting them in the correct trash bins my staff actually do the best they can to break down the boxes the city if they see mixed trash they will not come and pick up a trash bin the problem with that for my Staffing custodians is there aren't enough trash bins so they broken up the bags or the boxes that the paper boxes but then there is no room for a black trash bag so they just end up putting it in with the paper box that's one of the things we've been working on both turn on the end with the city and I'm to get us more availability in yesterday and I'm not picking on students but I am you know there's a trash can that's sitting you know a foot away from them but they're going to sit there and I'm going to drop the rapper on the floor or even their brown bag from home before they turn around actually reach out and put it in trash can occasionally yeah absolutely I mean I think it would be good Catherine to do a campaign on reusable do you know is it donating disposables and trying to bring things from home a lot more so that's that's something that you know will definitely work on his well as how how to reduce the use of disposable items to begin with yes environmental we have students tonight and I'm really excited to see if we have several environmental committees at the school and I think that would be a great project for them to really educate the kids but it has to be in classes and it has to be live education the posters you know they won't look at Julia can pick on the students all you want I think there's a bigger problem they don't follow you know what I'm not picking on them cuz I don't love them I love them to death and they want to do it's right but they really need to and the difference in and we needed an education program on why it's not okay to just throw your trash on the ground anyway definitely it's good to get feedback and we do have the students do it let's let's work on this is a work in progress for sure dimension let me work I was in my room and took me last year. I miss you and that like kids don't like 5 or something to throw away their stuff for like like on the ground like hahaha but like chapter currently chain that mindset and especially with like middle schoolers as they come into the high school cuz I don't know how much how much work you can do with like seniors are like either in my class but if we like episode it's not awful things like let them know like the environment important let's work on that and see how we can get to the students I know the high school they have a. I think on Wednesday morning where you can show videos and and show I think it goes to all the students so we can use that platform as well so just to get back to this is that there's one more thing I want to show the when's that are leaving but still working it weird looking at Green cleaning products Alternatives and I won't speak more about that right now but I'm definitely going to try to work on that in the next few months we're also working with Culver City on joint purchasing so that we benefit from the same cost on items or or discount possibly through them we have the pleasure of having a child yamasaki from the Patagonia Foundation who approached me a while back to see if you know how we could collaborate and he has an idea and I wanted him to talk about it but Charles just one thing before you leave because I wanted to show Katherine and I'm sorry this is now kind of all over the place but Culver City has these mobile recycling trucks that are now in place to where you can bring your C viso bottles and cans and receive money in exchange so you can make it a family outing there two locations in Culver City so I think this is great and we have Chanel here I don't know if you want to say anything about this but I might encourage a you to you know this is America recycles month it was on November 5th 1540 America recycles day so you could make this something that you do this month families yeah this is so we received a grant from calrecycle we were one of only two cities to receive this Grant and it says a pilot program and it started last week so it's full-on running and it was because of I believe last year a company I can't remember the name and fortunately into bankruptcy and so it was a council is very interested in bringing back CRV program back to the city so the city was thankfully able to do that in and so far have you two locations on Jefferson that sounds great yes so it's SoCal recycling they were the same company that we had set up the clothing recycling program last year with during Earth's past week we were supposed to gather you know all the clothing get it weighed in and it would have generated money for the schools through the Culver City Education Foundation so that fell through but I'm glad that they're working with Culver City in fact maybe they could come to our school district during earthfest week next year to do the same thing as they're doing in the city right now so take advantage of that and I want to go back to charge Charles if you can unmute yourself maybe I'll even stop sharing my screen so we can all see each other if you want to share what you're thinking for sorry scary thanks for the introduction I actually work for the company Patagonia we do have a Patagonia Foundation they run are activism branch of business activities and I think there's a couple ideas that I have one is I think you actually sending you did some research we have a Patagonia action works and that division runs at Grants program and every year and curly weave front over a thousand so far this year Grassroots organizations are programs that goes out and local communities or add a national scale or media me to people fund their projects or documentary of media projects Culver City District I see them Philly meeting the qualifications for a retail a grants where we take a project that's has some tangible a result that has a strategic plan we have some sort of funding with it but we're asking for augment augmented funds from Patagonia and it would be in coordination with are the local to the nearest Patagonia store which would be in Santa Monica I'm kind of jumping all over the place but basically if we want there's an Avenue where I could we could submit an application a proposal to our grounds cancel and see if we keep this school district kids get some funding for a specific project that makes sense have we done anything like this for those who have been in the district alone time I'm going to rehab I'm Charles what do you how do you see this shaping what would say I just example the front I'm still trying to I'm a beginner here a rookie with this committee I'm trying to get understand get a Philly and killing of the Cadence and how we operate but what I heard this really in this meeting the net zero is an example Net Zero Energy master plan that is a strategic initiative and within it there must be made major a lot of projects and Milestones maybe one of those days that are funny and he's some kind of funds support weekly hello you could possibly fund a a, what are the the my I'm on a browsers room so it's it's not as good as quality as the client soup but I think one of the things was the challenge the program itself has not really not yet anyway looked at cash and key performance metrics or what county is but something that we that's would be advantageous or beneficial would be to install a tool or leverage a tool to monitor real time the savings or the or the reduction or all these different types of metrics that we can use utilize to put in report so that's something maybe we wrap around a proposal and submit that to Patagonia grants Council and ready to go and obviously isn't with will be measurable stormwater related acre-feet I know you're in the subcommittee knew you were part of the presentation or watch the presentation in the sand subcommittee but that definitely seems like a possibility we already have a dashboard project but you know where that's at issue but not that we have measurable yeah we could put in systems that measure all the stormwater quality controls in the project that's part of it so if I could gather but a lot of these projects and I through my since I work there I can instead of the former pro application procedure at least preempted by asking these people can try to get a read and say I'm going to throw out these Atlantic City projects what do you think and then and if they say yeah this is that sounds good or that's bad note and then at least you'll get a head start or I get an idea of what they're looking for could it be taking a  in seconds and green if you don't mind just this chair is an example I used to be at Sony Pictures and they had I better get used to it a grant program and it was call Dollar if it was like $7,500 or something to go in and do things so I don't know if anybody had participated in anything that before so if anybody has a Sony employee contact they are probably still running that grant program and it could be supplemental funds or four different projects who does the scope can it be like in sing our composting program or working on our Garden Project or planting trees or is it is it dumb what's the scope scope is it it has to I can't give you all the the requirements of what a approve Dora but I asked there some general guidelines okay and do you have a website yes I wish I could share my desktop but it we do have patagonia.com and if you go to action works you on assistance with the social media every school has different platforms it's very hard for you know me and Caroline to figure all this out so maybe a social media reps per School so let us know and then I wanted to talk to you guys about what you're doing in your schools in your your interests and where you need assistance last time we didn't have a lot of time so it's so she the students tell you no Sunrise is an environmental group how can we help you this is a committee so that really means that we should all be participating just being here is great but what else can we do in between meetings to help each other out I just wanted to say I really liked the gardening kit idea because right now for the sustainability committee that I meant we're working on like separate videos of each of us planting something in our garden or like talking about how to plant stuff in our garden and it's kind of going to be like a long project to just different videos and like process of the growth within the garden so I think the kids could really be a good aspect to coincide with that like once it's all over and like I said like to encourage students to Garden at home also that could make it easier obviously and to add on to that I work for each other Garden Clippers school with definitely would love to be in the club right can you ask them to contact me and will look them in the eye different contacts we've reached out to a lot of nurseries even sometimes they have a pecan pie I've reached out to local nursery and see if they could help us so far while it was very recent so I'm still waiting on a few answers we're going to have a call with somebody from growing break I need to like the idea of having a gardening kit so hopefully you can figure out something with them a lot of you have already said what you wanted more gardening and cvd so we're going to try to do something about it for the last five years I've had a Garden Club and it's on the backdrop of the 300 200 Belden 300 building between 3rd and Fort Hall and it's been very successful but I've never been able to and we sell the projects to the teachers who are some of the adults on campus money goes into a club into I'm sorry it's the club money that's going to be able to fool fun but the question is I've never had anyone come in to help us develop the land give us free land it's a matter of from whatever we regenerate that money and buy new projects and every semester I have two different sets of students so let's just say we go back on campus tomorrow is there a way that I can get connected to some of these great garden nurseries that can give us donate some plants for us instead of spending the club money that's made buying you Lansing support that's the idea you know they even have expired seeds that you know are still perfectly fine but they can't sell them anymore so where we just start this idea and Outreach so we'll keep you posted as soon as we know more but that's great we didn't know about your garden area wonderful to share that any can I ask like this every school has a school garden or I think I'm I know there was one at the high school I've seen it in the summertime and I I can tell you everything every school has a garden I know that because just a few weeks ago about a month ago I had to go around and take pictures of every single Garden in every school so I know where they are they're all there they're all some of them are a little out of order because you know people have been so we do have compost egg cartons can we go in and right now that has a project they're working on or green ambassadors are green 5 or any anything that they want to share that where they need some support maybe I'll and Screen us for a sec to anyone doing anything so my club is it started up this year but we're doing a lot of it so it's based movement called Sunrise movement and its reminder for Change and Vic. teacher Sierra Middle School teachers but like I've been to find maybe a middle schooler that maybe like wants to start their own club up like I might head team of like other Juniors and sophomores and freshmen they would like love to help build up a cloud for like a middle schooler to get involved the environment and human environment and wife get citizenship at the same time does the middle school have clubs in the same way the high school does today this week Santa Paws announce that they are looking for students to start different clubs at the middle school and Miss Ms. And Miss lemon so maybe Delaney are you can send an email to miss McFadden Miss lemons because they looking students to start a club and I think they going to start looking at it when we come back after Thanksgiving break so you might want to send an email for me was that I miss lemons oh yeah I emailed Miss lemons and we've been talking and she's trying to see if the end of the square that might be about I've been trying to get in contact with the middle schoolers I have known before quarantine then just like if anybody has any like friends in Middle School play Young Michelle go ahead Yeah couple of things I know a student in La unified and her sister and ability Cubs starting something I think it's pretty neat that I wanted to share they decided they wanted to reduce those little individual chip bags because they are not biodegradable and so the way they approached it was to encourage other students to talk to their parents about buying bulk snacks and then they could bring them in little wax bags are little compostable bags or even a cloth bag rather than using all those chip bag that was one thing I wanted to share and then the other thing I wanted to let you know I mean I feel a little bad about this I got an email last week for a grand opportunity for Gardens and it was super cool but the deadline was like 5 minutes from then so I didn't have any time to let everybody know that it happen and I wrote the grant really really fast and what it is is it a crowdfunding opportunity and then they will select from from viable projects that are raising money they will select some to get will grants so I started that For Love by Leona it's on Facebook if you want to point people towards it that would be awesome we've already gotten a really good response some from parents and some disc members and so I will try my best to push things over to Sandrine to share with this group as they come through cuz I'm in the garden for so long that I'm already on a bunch of list that I don't even know how I get on them so anyway my apologies for to sell local Clover City honey so how but those are not on those are not on campus or any school campus don't believe so I believe they're all no private their private citizens and one of them actually that's her her business and her job is developing greenspaces particular having bee houses corporations she just redid some spaces I think in Santa Monica if she made it to HBO actually I wouldn't like some really big companies redid their whole rooftops and a bunch of them have stuff that's cool yeah it'd be cool to have a bee hive in one of the school that they don't allow that I ask because of how many I was about to say something to that request but it would be environmentally friendly thing to do and I can try to contact them but there's a bunch of actually people that own Nursery is at work with the school's already so if you guys haven't connected with like John Connor talk to the peach the fan club at Farragut you should do that to see about getting those garden and seedlings and plants and you guys would be interested Airline you're taking notes right on all this Albany Melissa I don't know if you want to get back to the lake idiot parked when we talked about before but if I don't know if I do that Play Active for my class counsel and I know there's a lot of people and if you know how do you social media well and so we are looking to reach out to high schoolers we do need help so you know this this is a committee where a lot can be done you know Caroline and I are working as much as we can but you know the more we all participate in volunteer them are there will be you know happening around me so I love how we're coming together right now and brainstorming and seeing how we can do these different things in different schools like I love the idea of creating the sunrise at the middle school so I don't know Jeffrey. Jeffrey is our liaison for this committee with the so the idea is that he's going to be able to communicate with the principal I don't know that he would know about clubs but however we can help you Delena yeah I just wanted to like the main idea is to help a little slick one middle schooler or middle school you're so Creative Cloud cuz once you have that one person this year and they can get their friends involved with the same time that works like you have to get one person today 1% okay alright is there anyone else that wants to talk about their project or something they are curious why were the years of been doing the club and had a couple kids I'm up in the past and ask a question over and over do we have a 4-H club are we going to have a 4-inch core and I'm like I'm just the Garden Club and I know the 4-H club it's like so much snow is anyway I have any information of how to connect some of the kids that's asking for 4-H club I kind of looked around and a couple of them but I wasn't sure of the connection and I really knows I honestly told the kids I don't know what there's a green the green thumbs Club at the high school I haven't met them directly but I think maybe we could get some of this answer to help communicate to them and we can I'm not sure if they could attend next meeting or if you could tell him that we're having you know there's a big focus on switch need to catch in and so we don't have a club to say but hopefully next year I can make the connection with all these great connections that I'm meeting today okay that sounds great all right we about a 00 net wanted to just share some things about energy saving so Culver City transition to the clean power Alliance last year so both residents and Commercial businesses were switch to 100% renewable energy you can check your Edison bill to make sure you're still on that I would stay you to stay on the hundred percent for sure HVAC maintenance it's good to do it you know once twice once a year to let you know every two years at home I would say and then change out your filters regularly you can buy reusable ones at you know Home Depot or Lowe's and just wash them every 6 months also you know switching to LED bulbs consider sensors we heard about those today but like in closets garage if you have one and even bathrooms those are efficient you can insulate hot water pipes very easy piece of foam you can buy again that you know Play Store it's like two under $2 and that helps keep the heat you can also get a programmable thermostat like Nestor other their other brands add films to Windows you know considering you Windows that's not always possible but if you really have a leaky window you might want to let you know then sometime repairing not a nor or at least or maybe changing it always purchase Energy Star Equipment for computers it's called a PT certification so that's something to look at and then you know obviously turning off lights and anything that's plugged in is January is taking energy so unplug equipment at night if you're not using it and if you are doing anything particular you know to any thing environmental or at least send us photos of your family in a recycling or whatever it is you know we we want to gather those throughout the year and share them at some point so and then let's see I'm also it's that time of the year where your thing about holiday gifts if you could choose eco-friendly and you still give a reuse packaging make your own craft or homemade gifts like cereal or things like that if you're using Amazon shoes don't smile they will donate you can choose an NGO you can even add one if you or anything your church or your your favorite environment so they can be added on there and then you can generate money for them to spy find through Amazon smile and it's the same experience and then there's some website plastic pollution Coalition Good Housekeeping and green child magazine they all have really refund a green gift for the hall so you can also plant a tree you know by plan for seed you will be given this PowerPoint presentation and the recording will be on our sustainability page on iccsd so you'll have access to all of these links soon and then we're trying to figure out how to translate documents I don't know if there's a formal system in place but you know we have a a small envelope so I don't know if there's someone who can do this for us or I don't know how the school district usually Kelly I don't know if you know how we translate things officially or Robert I'm not sure we are we are people on staff that we pay Japanese translation stipends to translate our general documents that one sheet of best practices for parents that would be easier so we have about six pages so it's it would look like this and it would be in Spanish set send me what you got in English and I'll talk to the various people and then Julie was kind enough to to let us ads either green tips or any kind of
