seductions is you are all on time and I went to be mindful of that I'll start you could give your name and school affiliation or work maybe I don't and you'll both be presenting after so I don't know if you want to present yourselves now but you may send Cassidy I'm the sustainability coordinator for the Culver City Unified School District at the head of the environmental sustainability committee and I work with Caroline bustillos and we work on operational projects as well as educational programs and I will pass it to Greg hey everybody I'm Greg Marin and I'm a parent at the El Marino Elementary School thank you Ava hello I'm a vet and I'm a girl scout and I been speaking with Sandrine and Caroline I'm on my Gold Award project cuz I'm interested in sustainability and like Waste Management so yeah I'm attending this meeting for the first time but I'm excited to hear all of your thoughts we're excited to have you Caroline yes or my computer just died but I'm trying to see you some assistance ability consultants and I've been working with send rain on a few projects in some assisting her for the her position as a sustainability coordinator for ccusd thank you Claudia everyone this is Claudia Fajardo and I must have a parent that El Marino and Greg and I are the dream committee I don't already know we can't wait to hear about what you did today Julie I'm Julie Garcia and the director of Food Services the Culver City Unified thank you Genesis hello what you think at school what grade are you in Genesis site 10 or 10 okay thank you Oscar I Oscar Rodriguez assistant principal at cchs all right thank you so we have a lower turnout than usual because of a conflict there's another meeting tonight with the equity committee at Town Hall and so the superintendent usually comes to we had to change the date because of Thanksgiving so anyway I'm Kathy High would you like to introduce yourself hello hi I'm Kathy Vargas I'm with the city of Culver City and I'm here to support Sandrine and Caroline and this Culver City Unified School District thank you very much and so let's get started I'm going to share my screen real quick and skip to this all right sorry about that we go so happy America Cycles day and at ccusd we were making it a week of events in the different schools and so we're excited that we're actually meeting on this day which is very opportune and especially to have the two wonderful guest speakers that we have tonight how lucky we are we did the introductions and we want to get right to our guest speakers we have the great great privilege and honor to have hurricane Wella calrecycle and I believe everyone knows what calrecycle is but I'll mention its California Department of resources Recycling and Recovery which brings together the states Recycling and waste management Pro in essence there are state agency to Leading all of our laws and efforts around environmental Steward of stewardship so I would love to pass pasta anytime too. Thank you. Thank you Sandra and for her for having us then this is a great opportunity to spread the word on SB 1383 the surprising a lot of people still haven't heard of it and if it comes into effect January one 2022 looks just around the corner so we're trying to get the word out as much as possible especially to schools because schools have not really had to do a Power Cycle a tent to deal with c d e School Association so we're kind of the new kid on the Block but we're excited to be here if you haven't heard and September 2016 Governor Brown's that methane emission reduction price for California Senate Bill 1383 it is a Statewide effort to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants by reducing organic waste disposal by 50% by 2020 75% by 2025 as part of California is larger strategy to combat climate change as we 1383 also established and edible food recovery go that Noah and 20% of currently disposed edible food must be recovered for human consumption by 2025 I want to point out that these goals are not friends of the jewel cities townies or school to accomplish but it is a Statewide gold that all Californians we must work together in order for us to be able to cheapest why is it important why is cow recycle behind us ensure it is to reduce food insecurity which has doubled is covid-19 reason why these regulations are so critical and the law is also designed to reduce the global global warming super pollutants nothing which is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide the recycling organic waste and returning Edibles food is a fast track to combating climate change our department actually put together a call action video and I think it's super it explains it a lot better with beautiful graphics and our new governor doing our call to actions I'd love to be able to share disher Springfield artist out of work are you should be able to share your screen musically videos about 30 minutes you see that is no longer the future lately and golf and it is it's already here California sitting a fearsome Milestone were experiencing temperatures world record-breaking temperatures in the state of California 130 or should be today we are advancing a drought emergency State and here at our cycle we're doing something about it ackee fruit smoothies great is the biggest change that happened in Waste Management in over 30 years the new super gluten reduction strategy rules for or Recycling and edible food recovery or part of California is bold effort to fast-track climate progress by reducing the most potent climate Superfluous like landfill methane emissions food fiber wood and other organic waste make up the largest material pipe landfills in California every year when organic waste material decomposes it in its methane a short-lived climate super pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide and a major contributor to climate change California short-lived climate pollutants reduction law called on the state's 40 million people its business isn't every level of government to reduce landfill play the mission by your cheating a 75% Statewide reduction in organic waste disposal by 2025 the law also requires actions to make sure at least 20% of currently disposed is edible food is redirected to Californians who don't have enough to eat this data is encouraging cities and counties to start planning now there is a need for more infrastructure to process food waste to provide or collection services to every resident and business in the state and connect grocery stores restaurants cool state agencies and other large Food suppliers with local food recovery organization to feed people Knott Landfill in addition to putting more food on the table the law will reduce pollution and greenhouse gases the equivalent of taking nearly two million cars off the road for a year by using Innovative methods to make a noose contos will create things like biofuel and electricity and turned to flee the dirt back in the nutrient-rich water retaining soil building the next generation of recycling infrastructure will print about 17,000 green jobs of the future ambitious goals putting California in a much better position to protect the health of our people and our planet the really big solution here is taking on the climb Craigslist because it's it's still possible I think to avoid the worst outcomes that's my call to action for SB 1383 to help educate the general public on what it is we are trying to accomplish the students and teachers of the school lunch times are going to look a little different there should be different containers still producing methane you know it it looks like also separating and diverting organic waste from landfills in Culver City Unified School District email seeing you can there's two separate food scraps of paper and other organic ways from recyclables your general cycles and landfill trash so what that may look like a recipe for edible food with free for school we did get we do have this great video from stop ways which is up here in a Northern California they actually worked with the Oakland Unified School District to establish are Tuk tabled in 2019 and actually it was fabulous video of what that looks like for them and their school district and what Culver City may look like in in the upcoming months they love to share that with you also see I don't know what stop video that face but her phone has finally made in the food waste is a big problem in California annually here in the state of California we discussed about six million tonnes of food staggering number and it's especially disturbing in light of the fact that one and five children is food insecure there are a tremendous amount of opportunities out there to rescue that call food and get it to the people that need it FoodShare tables need to be a big part of that solution when they're done with their lunch if they haven't eaten something and it's still in good condition has fallen on the floor as a man open and they can put it in the Bourbon and then they put the stuff in the bin and then other kids can either come up and get something from the food cherubim or at the end of the day we are able to donate that food this video is going to help you set up a food chair table in your school cafeteria setting up and maintaining a food chair table works best if you have a team of people working together this may include nutrition services custodial staff your school sustainability team principals and teachers nonprofit partners and your local Health Department ideally the school already has a starting station so then they're separating out compost trash and recycling so it would be the first stop at that station we want to encourage the children to take a nice variety we want to eat what they took but we also raised to recognize that sometimes maybe their eyes are bigger than your stomach and that's where the share table really is nice things that are allowed on the future table are items from the federal meal the things that were served so if student had a home fast meal those items can't go on there any items that are haven't been bitten into and that are still sealed for kids. Tell him what goes where I'm going to drop in the area. Pretty much can do anytime kitchen staff that have ownership to it so then they're checking in on it in between the munchkin lunch times the male time and then securing off food after that last meal and then at the end of the lunch. Then the kitchen manager would then hold us items back to the kitchen some of those. we may reserve some of them may go to Food Innovation and then remaining items with that have to be tossed something that we were in the past during that this food was handled by kids that might be Jeremy might be sick when you go to the grocery store that Foods handled by a lot of folks kitchen managers just get used to that practice on I'm washing the Fizz put the extra milk centers that they want to eat out open as an enormous amount of homelessness going on and so we would like make sure that the food goes to nonprofits and homeless and just people in general who don't have enough to eat I go pick it up at Hoover Elementary School load it up and I'll bring back here to the drop it I'll put it in the refrigerator to serve the food in the morning it's a blessing that we have this hook up so to speak that we can have them for the clients who are basically sometimes have nothing to eat this way their only meal of the day I meant Henry don't and I want when I want you to know that I'm hungry the most of our school districts receive federally funded food and there's a misconception that that food can't be shared or donate it but in fact at Camp California Good Samaritan Act stands on the federal Good Samaritan act but it specifically mentions that said food facilities that are permitted by local law enforcement agencies have the ability to give away food as long as they Frankenstein so with the food to your table you know as long as they food is handled safely that's controlling time and making sure that the food is held it is safe temperature I have this video will help you establish a food chair Cable in your school cafeteria for more information feel free to visit stopwaste.org or reach out to us for more help yeah so that's the video does it kind of gives you an idea of what schools may possibly look like with this new law taking place there's also another videos feels you know liquids bucket compost recyclables and and landfill in it and it shows the students you know learning how to sort for the waist but that's also available but that's that's my whole presentation how to get this High overview of SB 1383 I didn't want to overwhelm you with all the nitty-gritty Rags I'm sure you don't want to know about that unless you really have to get your hands dirty, but I am available if you have any questions calrecycle were pushing partners we want to help you know Culver City Unified be as successful as possible with this new law you know there is an important aspect but we don't want to focus on that we want to make sure you're successful in the end that's always going to be on I really want to be successful in meeting the Statewide call is there any questions you have for me then I overwhelm you I apologize I think you've opened our eyes to a lot things I I wasn't really aware of this whole food sure table program and how it what would it could look like in our schools and cafeteria and it seems you know it'll take take the village we might need to do more work up front but I am hopeful because a lot of I mean we were there today at the cafeteria and you know kids are throwing out the food and if there is and if it's the Good Samaritan law is available and that you know calrecycle is directing us and we have the green light I think we should do that I'm I'm surprised about the date 2024 was there a reason it was that far out B cuz it seems like something fairly easy to set up if we have a weigh station to add one of those collection you know we actually did it your system so we focused on wholesale large supermarkets food service providers they start January one 2022 and then we cheer to school state agencies Hotel restaurants in to 2022 the kind of giving you know a little head start like there's nothing that restricts you from doing it now figure out what's working and what isn't and so that when 2024 does come around. That's just dumb and program is in place and running smoothly Mystikal that's great does anyone have any questions for Carrie say please go ahead Hi I hi everybody I'm sorry for coming in late I I don't really have a question but I just just a kind of an observation and just share that when I was helping set up so you stay in the bility program for Culver City Unified we actually had we made that happen I think Julie Garcia who's on I can see I can see your name but I don't see you but I hi Julie so we work together on that at the high school middle school and I know but I think that you already have that you know practice already happened so I think it's just getting it back getting it going again I think you're right Julie you and I well like she said you know we had to take away with covid and I haven't contacted the health department to see if we can re-establish them I'm I found out that I've got two different Health Department division for the elementary schools versus to Central Kitchen so I've got a contact different separately to see if I can what I can do but the kids were good they knew some schools are better than most especially with regards to the mill that seems to be the the biggest hurdle hello my help sorry it is what would we do with the male half empty cartons and you know custodians don't want to deal with it and it's just if nothing else but will get over it with her going in one stream or another there they're going in the trash so it's really a matter I think if we set up a bucket are the liquids and then get it to the composting that would be good but it's these are practical things we need to work on and it won't happen overnight but I think it's feasible and especially Kathy is here from the city they got a grand from calrecycle and they have a truck refrigerated truck Kathy do you want to say anything about the hydraulic yeah we have a delay working with me we were working on getting an mou with the school in that stalled right right is covid hit so we're looking to have the new superintendent reviewed and will you and see if we can't get it the challenge with that though is I'm not sure with the changes of how the packaging is going to be handled or as Julie said there's some items like milk that are just seemed like it may be difficult to have that transportation to make it in 06 as possible so we are going slow with it only because we need to have the mou in place and that's just a city thing they just require it and we do have a truck so calrecycle gave us and into that Grant we have refrigerated vehicle that has the capabilities of going to different organizations picking up food and then taking it to other organizations that can redistribute it but again you know with kovid. Stalled a lot of things and the program was one of them but we are looking to a reinvigorated and hopefully the mou will go over smoothly and by that time you know I understand it's going to be kind of a hit-or-miss because we want to work with the schools but at the same we want it what we wanted to work for everyone so there's that thank you for sharing their few Claudia and then Greg do you want to share your thoughts or questions hello I have a question on I I come from my dog's food safety perspective how hard is it to overcome hurdles starting food safety like how you keep the food safe for the next person that's going to use it and how hard has it been to the health department kind of paperwork again for me that yesterday I wasn't so it would depend on what you have available to you right like if you have the storage pay Refrigeration the storage space and you saw on the video like there's very specific temperature that must be followed them and how long they do Market to track time and then it's a it's a lot of record keeping on the on your behalf to make sure you meet those guidelines I'm completely doable as long as you have the team to do it and and the process to do it Oakland has seen a lot of success so has a San Diego unified down south in Oceanside they've had a lot of success our website of school resources has a lot of case studies and model programs and we a match you if if you need assistance you can reach us at schools at calrecycle. Ca.gov and we can if you have any questions and we connect you and a match if you need any assistance how to thank you Greg have a question or comment for the students can handle this with the property it was I was very impressed with their already this Elementary School kindergarteners and I was special disposable approach to providing food and the services I understand this competition is mostly about food recovery and that makes total sense but I just wanted to ask about the ancillary opportunities around how do we produce in the first place right Play Patsy just in a such a big part of the solution here I completely agree and it'll take a lot of convincing to be able to say you know like you don't need the sports that are did the Julie package with the salt and pepper in the napkin right so it is going to be a lot of tweaking in the in the back end and are the front end so it'll it's going to take a top-down approach to the school district and having those, absolutely agree with you yeah that's a good point I was out at the high school also mentioning all these streams and then also that messaging of you know how do we stop from using all of these disposables and so it's going to take awhile but we just have to keep doing it Chase started it a while ago and we're continuing her efforts and so it's good to this great conversation anyone else have a question for free I have kind of a technical question it's it's why if you know why do we call missing a short shortly for lutant I heard that like twice like like me is it why is it shortly to cover that yeah it would tell I would Google it and read it back to you but I think there's just some greenhouse gases that are that stay in the air lost a lot longer and this one is I think it's 20 26 times stronger is faster right yeah you're getting into half lives of of of elements in the scientific periodic table but it it's doesn't our stay in the air as long but it's super potent yeah a question to Scientific but maybe someone else is there in this is probably outside the food thing but in terms of capturing carbon sequestration or am I saying that word right I'm just wondering like how methane versus CO2 is everything the ability to capture. I wish my staff for the Ravens I know all about them I don't know Sandra do you know well I'm not if you if you don't take that tackle it and I don't feel comfortable well it's a good thing we we should maybe explore that for the next meeting have a little I'll have a slide on this and we'll be able to do a deep dive but what about recycling because so many people say oh we know the China doesn't take our recyclables and you know so we shouldn't recycle and then on top of it not all of the numbers are you no good can be recycled and some people are getting discouraged and I'm like no no you and I will never know what the market is for recyclables but in fact is there going to be a stronger infrastructure in the back of the recycling system where we will be able to reuse our plastic sand in a system the loop system and recycle them more here in you do local more locally you build in into law so they are they are redoing the chasing Arrow symbol it'll only be on products or at least 60% of the communities in the state recycle that material so that they'll be a lot less confusion I'm so that should be taking this back pretty soon we've all you are creating a brand new office of innovation and calrecycle we're trying to promote circular economy building infrastructure for this new law brand new organic waste collection Services trying to find innovative ways to utilize plastic non recyclable plastic that's not being taken to our facilities currently I'm so we are pushing and building infrastructure were working with the governor's business of economics and we're working with them and partnering with them and an influx of Grants and Loans to build that infrastructure so yeah you'll be seeing a lot of new and exciting things coming through because and we are very much aware of what's happening with green Anson China no longer taking our Plastics or trying to work around it and trying to alleviate that process excellent I'm going to put in the chat box there's I'm actually all of the how how California is leading on Olive efforts with Governor Newsom flaws so thank you for sharing thank you so much we it is a real privilege to have you here and we have a nice turnout anyway and these are all important people because they all care about our is any environment and will be stewards of all of this so thank you again you're welcome to stay but I presentation but they are here to provide a safe and bible supply of high-quality water to our service area and yeah I'll let you explain it it is a little complicated how the water system cuz most people get the Golden State and build and so maybe there you can explain how West Basin fits into this thank you Jennifer is irony water policy and research analyst with Mason Municipal Water District and I did prepare a few slides I'm hoping not to go too long but it didn't want to visually 10% of the program to do we talking about and I'll provide some background as far as how I was speaking I guess please into the water system on because you do get that question a lot really who we are and how we play that role so let me go ahead and share my presentation are you seeing it on screen now. are so I'm I just provided some quick advice like I mentioned you did Cover very well our mission which is of course to provide a safe and reliable supply of high-quality water to the communities that we searched I think this might maybe help explain the story a little bit better I did provide a little bit of background just to slide of our service area and do these are the cities that we cover West 17th City at the ones I like here and as far as the the bill the water bill we don't show up on a water bill essentially we have a retail agencies Golden State water pow California Water California Mary water there's different in our different agencies in our area that actually provide the bill the building of the water system and so we are what is considered a wholesale Water Agency so we have them basically after customer agencies add water to the Metropolitan water district with another I guess player in in the water system for providing different types of programs conservation programs at you I'm program and really today I'm here to talk about conservation program that's really what I work us the stuff at West Basin so I didn't want to cover the table really quickly our board of directors has the other summary background slide that I included a reference is the deficiency that I were highlighted in the past light and these colors these are our board of directors and of course a oversee our district and we integrate with the programs that we have available with West Easton and so for Culver City but really I would didn't poop right of course you are commonly seen the messaging around the drought and really what I wanted to do is tie it in with the action items that we have in the way of doing that of course are the programs we have available through the West Precinct the stripes so essentially I did begin with one of the programs that we call the change and see if program this program allows you to take a free survey essentially to identify opportunities found your home and just tackle the indoor devices and it also provides a free water-saving device kit to anyone that participates with the program so really that would be the first initial steps down with me due to installing water a saving device kit and just for some additional detail. Kit includes faucet aerators for both the bathroom and the kitchen include the shower head and it also includes a device that helps you do the water flow while the shower head is heating up so it allows you to pull the tab once the the water is ready and and warm it is a first-come-first-serve opportunity however we just you know we need this program so I would say definitely the option if you'd like to participate with the water and receive a free water saving device kit we're always looking for great opportunities for the community to be involved with this program take advantage of the kids that we provide it also included a full side for that but we also provide additional orwashers another focus of that program has the clothes washer element and of course there's rebates still available for upgrading to Lemoore High Efficiency device with the washers that really quickly and so for any of the programs they mentioned in this presentation my best recommendation is just to visit www.westada.org our main page has no course all of the information for all these all of these conservation programs are we have a full of website and web location section for conservation and all of the just a additional marketing materials that you'll see for this program to see some of the links that are available for we do promotes the high-efficiency clothes washer rebate it is up to five hundred hours depending on the location I'm so I always recommend checking your address to see if you qualify for that additional incentive it is through a grant so it is limited to some of that area within our our service area to not confused too much but these are of the messaging this is the messaging around that she has a program that you will see I just need to just really quickly also wanted to mention a few other programs are the rain barrel just kicked off last week actually we are offering free rain barrels we are offering home delivery and also pick up events as you see there the dates next starting here but if you're interested in the home. Prospect that's actually available now on our website of course and essentially we deliver up to to rain barrels to your property this helps you meet some of the items we can't be beat with y'all mentioned in the in the slide or so and also course any rainwater capture that you would like to complete in your home while we have these three devices free rain barrels available for quite some time and also the pick up events are coming up listen to Brass replacement slide and information I'm in really we are still promoting very this very strongly our outdoor water efficiency as a strong focus of the District of the you know see the Opera video of removing grass as much as possible within the city that we serve so we continued a strong focus with a $3 per square foot of grass replace rebate and these areas following you all are is all in your home it could be a front yard side yard I'm also the backyard we also have a strong focus on would like to work with City I'm also Commercial Business sites that might still have grass schools are also great opportunity and those who go through the commercial review. portion of this so it's both available for residential homes and also commercial property so if there are any sites in mind that could benefit from this $3 per square foot please get in contact with me if it's more of an Institutional site because they're such great opportunity there a strong Focus there like I mentioned that we want to continue this program now going strongly so that you have for many years will flee and just visit the back of the postcard that we did create wanted to provide as much information if it again not like it's overwhelming if you need a copy of this to anyone that you think might be interested we can definitely provide the high quality of TDS for the JPay depending on what you need and we really just promoted of course the the benefits of it which are includes water seating plans are they do of course recommend upgrading your irrigation system which is something a climate appropriate Garden which is worse what they're hoping that you're placing and then they do and would like you to utilizing bring water capture element which that goes into play with the free rain barrel program just people that are Westgate in service area that you can take advantage of the rain barrel the free rain barrels and then integrated into their glass replacement rebate application and their projects are there are other rainwater capture elements that can be included in the dry creek bed for example and there's a lot of resources. go on our website again for this program we have the number to call and also the the direct Peach dedicated for glass replacement and all the landscape classes I think these are the most especially if you've identified a site or you yourself are interested in Crash replacement They just added four new topics and these are all inclusive on despite all of the classes that are available those can be found on be water well, that's the only want me to link it through our westhuizen website so again if you don't want to drop this down West Basin. Work is the best website should just start off and learn additional information about and then last day of course I did want to mention cash for kitchens this applies to a school sites it can buy for a restaurant and all commercial kitchens in the west Basin service area we just take it online for a 2020 which means we do an online survey available at this time however there is some in person assistant that we can work out if that's needed and essentially this would like to identify any opportunities for water seeping devices it's essentially providing all eBay and free devices the next like kind of provides more of that information and so it has a pre-rinse spray valves that we completely give me free through this program also think bow restrictors in against School restaurants any type of commercial kitchen qualifies we have a picture of the pre-rinse spray out there to the right and also we are promoting or increase rebates which bees again our crap funded we are limited time we're hoping to identify as many of the devices device opportunities as possible before those go away and so they are offering air-cooled ice machines up to $3,000 Maxima Steamers up to $6,000 energy star dishwashers up to $6,000 and that's really a great incentive for these larger devices for sites again that qualify which would be schools and restaurants and so just really quickly closing up obviously talked about her our website West Easton. Org are rebates that are available are socalwatersmart. Calm and that is a direct application for not the grass replacement rebate that I mentioned earlier but also the washer rebate if you would like to learn more about the eligible model for models that are available for each device for example of those are found on socalwatersmart. will definitely be sharing all of this information Jennifer and it could even be one of our weekly green tipped where we can describe your different programs and promote you and let you know thank you so much for covering all of this and in-depth and I think there's a lot more information that I then I remembered from last year when Scott came so and we are the recipients of West Basin G twice now and we've received four water filling stations from West Basin sewer very grateful for your support of our schools and Shay do you have a question for Jennifer your hands up and I love to see that there just keep getting better my love free rain barrels are just like that's what you do now it's not like a special thing which is awesome and also the rebate stuff for the cast for kitchen so the restaurants that is really great I just wanted to know about cisterns in particular but I look terrible by the way end of the day this turns you know it seems like that is certainly for the school district and where there is a lot of open space is a really great opportunity for water capture and I'm just hoping that years ago when I was working in the program that was something that you know we talked about that me and never made any Headway but I unloved for that to be Revisited because there's just a lot of great opportunity to capture as we know it rain barrels it's just one quick you know rain event and I think we need to have figure in tanks of us for water caps even at larger and larger homes were also larger businesses and certain school districts so you have a available free beats for sister up to 1,000 gallons on this website So Cal Water smart., they offer $350 for those larger devices which I would be completely honest I'm not a hundred percent sure how much how those cost larger one specially if it goes up to 1,000 gal that it captures and it varies depending if it's just one of those smaller cisterns if it's less I think it's $250 on the side of them I bet it isn't available he beat on socalwatersmart and I completely agree that those larger sites with benefits and definitely from your sister and systems as opposed to do a smaller brain Barrel so yeah is actually the city has created a giant Reservoir long Culver boulevard and one of the other many other areas that have been identified to capture water and it's under a mandate now originally and a few of the locations are on our school grounds and it in the conversation is at the beginning but it's you know there may be plans ahead and I don't know maybe Kathy knows more but I know that there this talk of this and but I don't know what it would require to do it like who would be paying for it and all that so yeah that's really quickly I wanted to mention I did mention the rainwater capture element through the grass replaced program and attending some of those landscape classes they do talk about the opportunity to actually have that seep into the actual landscape and how that can hold a lot more water than any rain barrel would ever so it's also important to think about possibly if there are areas that you know dry creek beds can be created their sperms all different types and you can go through the grass replacement incense because I wasn't really asking you to include stormwater capture element one stormwater capture a large Dry Creek bed that during those rain event is capturing large amounts of water the last two classes opportunity for that I'm just stupid I just will have to wrap these Resources with you after all of the links and stuff I just a quick update we met with the city and they went over as p1383 which calrecycle already went over and you know we're working closely with them they're our allies and it's really great to be working side-by-side on this so they're here to support us and we want to support them we provided a way starting training to our work ability students which are the Clover Park students with disabilities and I ended up doing a video on how to sort and they were amazing then you not all of them were capable of doing it but most of them figure it out how to do it and so I I do believe like Greg said students once we show them they're going to be enthusiastic about it and and participate specially the younger ones we applied with the Culver City Education Foundation for AC tell climate Champions grants that which could provide us up to forty or fifty thousand dollars that would maybe cover some of the coordinator role as you know this role is only a quarter time and with all the projects we could be doing we're just doing you know we're doing a lot but we could be doing more and as as writing more grants to if we had more funding we obtain waste data from the city and annual amount of waste produced by our district is close to 3,000 tons and half of it is going to landfill so we have a lot of work to do and we worked on last minute in the last 3 weeks on America recycles week and I'd love to hear from you going to finish the few bullet points and then let's hear from the different parents and students that worked on this today we met with Edison about their charge ready Avista program and because we're not in a disadvantaged area we would only be able to they would only be able to cover 25% of the construction costs so we now know what's available and we'll see how we work on that project moving forward tomorrow we take a tour of the LMU zero-waste kitchen to Envision a new way of doing zero waste kitchen and cafeteria and then presented to the board last week on what where do so let me just open up Greg Claudia anyone who participated in in America recycles day today please unmute Ensure is there a little bit and I love to hear from others so cloudy and I put together a pretty comprehensive recode activities we got really ambitious as we near right cited for today myself another volunteer went to the cafeteria we made some posters Jeff was actually at the various kinds of peanut butter Cheerios napkins bottle I'll print it up and brought it in we really took a lot of that we spent an hour-and-a-half in the periodic table ringtone music go to everytable myself and everybody here and do kind of like a quiz like where would you be if you don't mind if I could just show me quickly, and I'm trying to get some others from the folks yes oh you took this is from today we made this for a week and we just went up and we said two people wearing a blue one anyway it was just very engaging had a great time I was really surprised how everybody knew the kids were and it was never really a he I stick we got them to go from the hopping around all the tables through out the entire lunch. We went to where the actually drop off the stuff and we saw the set up there from the things that we talked about earlier would be fantastic if they even were talking about when I was there if we just had a table where the kids put their tray down while they disassembled it really simple we can follow up with you enjoy the support of the principal and assistant principal Just Jump Right In leave it there but I think it's a great start to our week I think we've got the attention of our Administration locally about him you know the support about how we can move the rest of the week and then obviously beyond that I shared some of the green Ambassador in a program materials that were with me, and I identify and I are going to find out it's a big step for us with also clean air which is kind of a unique El Marino you know initiative but a bunch of opportunities that you know we're going to just move into take an energy from anything that you want to add requires been really just working super hard with me and you know I'm just all week long in the preparation I think that that was it submarine Craig and since I wasn't able to be on campus today what will keep you all updated with what we do the rest of the week and try to take pictures and and share but this is like a really fun thing that we're doing and I will keep you posted don't think you're having as much fun as the kids I love it thank you for your time and investment in this so I know we did this last then you really managed to did you pick up the city x / 2 + stickers yes it was a great you know just reaching out and networking with other folks and Kathy's you know I think one of her co-workers. today in the cafeteria Area High School in some middle school and then delivered to El Rincon and you at the Target in a few of their school so I know what you know it's probably be an ongoing thing where we've Co there's one missing here or there so maybe if you can keep track in your schools of any need for extra recycling bins and or posters and then you know maybe in the month we can get to go back to admin and asked for more but our setup is really crucial because you know we saw today with Caroline if you moved the trash cans even by a foot you got all the trash is it's the same trash going in any color cuz they just so where the educational part is going to be the hardest and we talked to a lot of custodians today they're just waiting for our admin to buy the district is buying the three colored liners for all the schools in so it's not as easy as it sounds because of the sizes and stuff and then availability right now there's some I guess I don't have some shortages or something but anyway we're really in the midst of we have a flyer that we are Distributing to custodians and I think it could probably work for all of us in the end and so yeah go ahead is there a play 24 in a larger than 3 bands that are all together have Cubans is there a way to connect this to us they're always together the Newsies for the clip-on I don't know that's an option I don't know if you do it and stuff what we did notice when we John Wick Caroline is there are still those designs that shaded with the three bins and the and the pictures on the front like the really nice ones that we got a grant for there are some in the back of the high school that being utilized and so we could figure out how to move them around to key locations where there they're just the sort of you know round 65 gallon open ones and then get more of those around school so if you noticed that you could use a 3-stream bin I mean set up station in an area let us know and we will figure out how to get it to you we can't carry a heavy say how did you guys move those stations around in the school with a hand truck I would like a dolly can we do it with just a symbol. okay that's good to know they're made from recycled plastic by the way I'm not strong enough Saltine and they're in all the schools to write just a middle school and high school the tribe in the yeah that is something that would be contact to how about across all the schools the same ones that I know I need to go but it's still hurting to see this new group of wonderful people students and parents and course the lovely CenturyLink and progress is being made sounds good all right let's move along and right here maybe we already went over that and the one additional thing what's important to know is January 1st 2022 right here school districts must have a program in place for Organics but we also have to meet our procurement requirements so if schools are in already doing it admin will have to purchase 30% recycled content paper or more and so that we need to get up and running really quickly and that's going to be work on our end with admin in all the schools but I think it's pretty exciting also. procurement the green procurement requirements in general and then food recovery the fact that we've already done it I'm hoping that we can get this done before the end of this year I mean there's no reason wait till 2024 while food is being in a disposed of unnecessarily so that's something we'll work with Julie Garcia and then the city with their truck and see what how we can coordinate that but I I think we should create a subcommittee for that and and even my thought it was good to see how they set it up in the video but I think we could have a contest for students to design in their boxes or something like that where it could engage. also I'm thinking about all this and making it fun so things to think about the city is also to provide composting to all of our in either a lowboy or a dumpster where we could use it not only for our Gardens but also families and even the community can come and get their own rich Compass so we may have Ava I'm here who's the if I do you want to mention what you might be doing real quick sure we have been doing and Caroline brought up the idea and get meat that I can help distribute the compost to families or residents of Culver City or also just within the structure itself because that is something that they don't know how to distribute right now I don't know how we would do it but I have to talk to some of the some of the city officials to figure out how to distribute so yeah hopefully works out that's great thank you David are you from a school are you a student or a parent David Holley hi and when are the assistant principals at the middle school yeah yeah I've been in and out I've been on the road what's the service a couple times and then I wanted to show the students video that's about 3 minutes I think we've talked about a lot stuff already so I don't need to necessarily doing I'm throwing my trash away we are pretty I can recycling for recycle this symbol shows that this plastic is recyclable but that's not all before we recycle it we need to make sure that it's cleaned with no Louie gooey or chewy if there is then it can't be recycled and has to be thrown in the landfill that mean bro. There's a lot of waste that doesn't build that's where we can reduce our overall did you know that you should actually first reduce your ways then reuse but you can milk cartons paper toys I'll make sure to do that these are also in the classroom so that we can make sure to throw away things correctly over in class make to take a look about recycling today Bella this week is our cycling week and you can reduce or waste even more by cutting out Plastic Products beautiful water bottles Cutlery and containers bus make ccyc is that amazing and then the next meeting is on December 16th our special guest will be Rolando the director of the Department of Transportation from Culver City he'll be sharing the details of a sort of updating on the fair Free Fair program so we'll know how many students are utilizing the bus and all that also remember I thought we had a paycheck. to be managing some of the logistics some of the heavy lifting at so Kathy we we may have a team to help with that that's awesome that we're standing by just FYI on the compass I did receive a letter or certification of the type of compost it is and is very high-grade so just if any anyone that may come up question what type of compost or you know if it has a seed in it or whatever and it came back with really good results the soil testing in the certification so it's wonderful what do that so Ava feel free to reach out to me if you need anything or if I can assist with you no coordinating Waste Management just like water electricity and the Knights have a full week for a bit all those but I know it's a lot to ask but I think at one point I had a list of all of the environmental Days Inn Mark said we could sort of role with but I haven't looked into it recently and I like the idea of that I'm sure there's a national water conservation day Kathy do you guys keep any track of that order no no I don't have a calendar event bar mental date but there is a world water day and then of course we have the the annual bio on a creep clean up which is National World War I no no I don't have a calendar they just kind of pop up and you know if I get any that come through the email email I'll send them over to you Jeffrey Kathy's amazing princess a lot of research I'm not sure that I am I always share them with you but you know if it's it's worthwhile so where we we do keep track of what you send I so thank you for that every night just had one kind of comment I think I mentioned you know we're interested in the green ambassadors program and I think you know me some work I will follow up with her directions to a meeting one of my first meeting at the end of last year and there was somebody who was involved in the district curriculum around a nobility the person spoke and they mentioned was truly am better than all the other stuff that we do you know and I thought the animal that sounds okay but I also given the importance of these issues figuring out how to make it as prominent as poss I wanted to put that out there I don't I really don't even understand what their curriculum is and that also was just thinking about okay how do we get influence because the reality is a big part of what we were able to do is impacting thousands of families do not just young impact their behavior at you know whether it's really their behavior and for the future as they grow up and become adults I think that's being a Super Value ad yeah that's a great point I I do not know who you're talking about but I think she only came once and you know we we put people on our committee list and then everyone can come and stay one but we did try to meet with Jennifer Padilla I think she's in charge of Education also have district-wide and Heaven a chance to meet with her yet so wanted to do that and so will it will push for it before the next meeting and see if it can happen you know I I do agree that that element is really essential to what doing so we have to keep thinking about how to do that I think in fact maybe maybe we brainstorm I I mean in the elementary schools the green ambassador program is really an excellent one and I think I want to do is subcommittee meeting just so that those that have been doing it for years can help guide you guys cuz it's resight happened last year El Rincon just came to one of those music meetings and now they have a I'm up and running and now you guys are looking into it and we'd love for you to have it up and running by the end of this year or next year next year at the beginning next school year so it has value to meet I think outside of these meetings and focus on on projects and education is maybe we maybe we have a subcommittee meeting on how to infiltrate the school at every cuz it's it's not an easy thing to do I'm grateful we have a s be like at the high school and you know parents like you leading and working with the principles and I saw that one school Caroline maybe you'll remember they had a survey about climate change a tire wow if they're doing it at the elementary level why should we be doing it at our level a district-wide like what do you know about climate change and that should we be tapping into knowing we people are at with with all of this with the topic and and what they know and what they can do and you know to explore that with our community so maybe something to do as well I think it's been a little hard to to have a lot of teacher in our committee so I don't know if you know teachers that would be interested to have them join us because they're the ones that are teaching also so it would be really great that you have a little more teachers in our committee we had we've had some the first and second year but this year done that all but we've had more students this year than last year so I guess it really depends on who wants to be part of this so and I like him I like this idea of you know we did try to organize America recycles week like 3 weeks 3 or 4 weeks ago which is a really quick turnover we just had never thought of doing it and so we we can and should draw from these experiences this week for Earth Fest cuz that's really a big one and we've managed to do it every year even during covid and come up with some really original ideas and so I think starting in the new year maybe we'll have in January is subcommittee already subcommittee meeting and then really work on that week cuz it's really a really great week I think so do you want to add anything chat for a song by Greg and Steve it was yeah your experience working together and not realize that I'm wanting I need that energy from someone else cuz everytime I just thinks working on a program I'm just eating out someone's had to have another parent that's ecms I think like that I would like to find someone that could be like my partner so we can say okay what are we going to do this week or not you know in this upcoming earthquake for and I and get that energy and mobilize cuz I felt like I was trying to think of ideas myself and then it just was her I think it was hard for me and I realized I need that feedback you know Brittany really seems to be she's in the Middle School right so great was really helpful too but I think she's like on that dude you know A S D I was with her ideas that would work and David can speak to that site and I want to make sure that that's clear before we do anything and that takes time so this way but not really can I can be that Avenue for you make sure that contact some teachers and get that coordinated through the science department there's a lot of interest are there some projects that there they have on campus at they sort of managing their own that are on a smaller scale but be very interested at least a couple teachers will be very interested in being the go-to and then I'm yet would make sure that you have some somebody to be a regular contact and I'll be there as a support for sure thank you so much. That really means a lot to have support Edmund and I think this is why this platform as good as people communicating and you know figuring things out as we go along releases you want to say something to head yeah I know he used to have like a sunrise Club but I don't think that's going anywhere right now but I did I can ask if we're starting that again and also I know a lot of sense Friday's some of them Focus making the campus Greener and stuff like that so and like science teachers run those I think so we have to yeah that's a great Avenue to David did you want to say something sorry I was just not into my cameras also I tried to enlist the VCR club asbesto and I got zero students today so that's how my work with the high schoolers went with the club and you know you try and they wanted to have a table and and it just didn't work out so we can only do we can do but I think if we give ourselves more time to organize this and unless more people and really have a plan I think we had somewhat of a plan and but I think also either assistant principals are a good support and we have some of them as early as on so yeah and Allison said El Rincon is hoping to host Saturday event at our campus as a culmination of Earth week oh yeah in 2022 I haven't looked at what day or day is next year it's always it's always on the 22nd but I don't know if it falls in the week or or do you know I don't know when it is but I know Veronica one of the committee meetings or no not yet what's the Friday the 22nd of April is a Friday Friday that's good to know she'll probably that weekend the day right after we would host like everyone in the district Trevor wants to participate families commonly we try to I want to have some business in activities that everyone can participate in on them celebration of Earth and Earth Day yeah that sounds great I really like the idea of beautification days maybe it would be easier if they were maybe throughout the year during in a right after school or something rather than on a Saturday cuz I don't know how that works with staff and you know security and getting people there still location days and they haven't been on the weekends but I think that's why you get so involved because on a Saturday and get to go on campus can I see where the kids are going to school and then also help make it better that was also when we use the compost I don't know anyone I'm sorry this is my first meeting for this school year great but we had a really crazy during covid the kind of free groom at and then on to the vacation day had gotten some of that compost wonderful ccst or I guess the city compost and you know it's been great play been having lessons with the classrooms since then they've been planting and I know we've also had discussions on getting our pollinator Garden going cuz I know we got a grant for that so we are done but we had our first meeting after meeting earlier this month to where we want to get upon your cousin amazing oh my goodness what you're doing and yeah it does take a leadership and so I commend you all for your leadership role in all these different efforts and it's 6:30 so I wouldn't be mindful your time you're welcome to stay you know I'm tired afterwards but I went to release you if you have to get to your family so thank you so much for coming our next meeting is on December 16th right and yeah we hope you join us and invite more people and you know the more the merrier but the The Greener we get El so I think so thanks for all your working ideas Sandrine Allison if you hate I would love to work around that day because I'm cheering 10th anniversary celebration colors so we were thinking that that also in April want it to be competing with well I don't want it to compute either okay yeah I know thank you for the heads up that's good to know thank you yeah well we'll figure it out I can come I will do a subcommittee meeting just focused on Earth with Earth Fest week and last year we did that work with that rocket walking roller sorry and they were part of our weekly program so but it's good to know didn't know about their 10 years anniversary so I'm going to stop the recording
