recording in progress doctor text Rebecca are we ready it's all right you two okay it seems like everybody's ready I will come to the ccusd Board of Education meeting my name is I would like to call the meeting to order on Tuesday August May 2nd at 6:15 and moving us to agenda item 3.1 we have 5 board members present can I get a volunteer to do the flag salute remember get it up hand over your heart and again to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God with liberty and justice for all and now I can I get a volunteer for the land acknowledgement sure we acknowledge our presents on the traditional ancestral and unceded territory of the Kitsch and tons of people who are the original caretakers of this land thank you under 3.4 the board did not take any actions and close today moving to 5.1 can I get a motion to adopt agenda genda and I'd like to move it actually with flexibility to pick up item 12.2 when dr. Keller arrives all those in favor say aye aye aye we are going to move to public recognition guidelines and under 7.1 I'd like to invite members of the audience to submit your cards if you plan to provide public comment in person if you plan to provide public comment the other Zoom please raise your Tsum Han can we see under 7.2 members of the audience items not on the agenda how many people would like to speak on that in the room what president we have one speaker and we're starting to have speakers in the zoom room we have three so far I'm going to read bored bored by long 9323 the Porsche limit the total time for public input on an agenda item to 20 minutes with 4 consent the president may increase or decrease of time allowed for public Temptation depending on the topic and the number persons wishing to be heard the president may take a poll of the speakers for or against a particular issue and that additional person speak only if they have something new to add can we see how many people are on Zoom or items not on the agenda we have for now so we have five total the 2:45 minutes and I will close public comment for items not on the agenda can we come in I want to remind the audience that under items not on the agenda are bored by law 9323 states that we are if item is not listed on the agenda at the board refer to such matter to the superintendent or designee that does a need for today is dr. Beth Baxter until dr. Keller arrives or take it under advisement but she'll not take action at the time except as Allowed by law let's come in so miss the pastor if you would like to come and speak and please if you could let us know what item what the topic is that you were speaking on that would be wonderful thank you I guess I don't know by the way I think people are having trouble getting into the zoo tonight so just went up information there and my topic will be the extra students the 1,000 students is the timer displayed on the screen can you can you see it erase the timer Mister magic can you raise it a little bit so they can see the timer please I'm sorry I'm okay so it's the same size on mine okay I'll I'll just stand on my tippy-toes good that's great okay perfect. Okay thank you I will good evening board and unfortunately doctor Killers not here but we want to welcome him I don't want to thank the three board members who stood up and do the right thing last week I want to speak about the 1,000 students two should not be here or roughly 17% of the student body it's time to right-size the district and you know the high school has 2,200 students enrolled right now and that high schools built for roughly a 1500 1600 and it is so overcrowded that some of the students there don't have lockers and we'll never have lockers on so I consider that very unfortunate and you know mr. Tran about 4 weeks ago he said that really was okay and he said if those 1,000 students went away that we would have a problem as a district well I don't agree with that I've done no numbers I know it would be a difficult transition but really when you think about it he top students and trailers on the high school from 1987 I mean I know Mister Isadora using those trailers disgusting out there and we have I think about six or seven trailers that are also from the 90 we don't need those trailers the trailer start there because we have too many students who are not residents and they're not on permit though that's really you I'm getting this notice it says I'm you oh alright well all of a sudden I lost my timer the timer went away you still have over a minute that you have a minute Thirty or so thank you cuz it's dilapidated the more people you put in there no more it's really hot discipline problems you see the classrooms are over packed the children have to climb over the desk to even get to their their seeds it's unsafe and I really think that we need to think about the future we want to be and I'm a taxpayer in this district and a lot of other people we have certain expectations that our children will be going to the local school and really what's happening is I'm seeing in my neighborhood and I talked to a lot of people there full their children are the district they're sending their kids over to Venice High School tennis High School is very nice you know they fixed it up and it's not overcrowded is beautiful over there and here we have trailers from 1987 give me a break we should be ashamed of that we really should be ashamed so it's time to right-size that District get things under control and get on a totally different path but thank you very much thank you next on Stanley have Ms Sanders hopefully Aris hear me I am sorry that our new interim superintendent is not there yet I did want to welcome all the new staff himself as well as the two new principals and I gather we had 45 new staff at a meeting the other day yes that's very exciting to hear if they are unaware of our huge City Event Fiesta La Ballona this weekend I would encourage you know it not only our staff but especially needs to have to come and enjoy the fiesta it's lots of fun and we were also going to have a booth there to learn more about the district and everything that's going on I also would like to remind the board that we are still looking to agendize the contract with new Earth and discussed whether or not that is something that should be continued considering all of the massive concerns that we do have regarding a contract not fulfilling it remotely one of them especially with two million dollars coming up for this year and their inability to actually function properly so on campus is he legal and you guys are opening this up to massive well by doing that so I would suggest you get that on the agenda immediately so we can have that conversation since that is not still on the agenda and I would also like to thank this remembers who actually stood up and said goodbye to Tran last week that is a start we have a lot more work to do in this District so I hope you will consider the community's concerns and needs I also would like to still ask the doctor Smith employment be reviewed she is not the one who was doing anything positive again for the district she is not communicating with staff she's not communicating with people who actually emailed her request information after everything she's not available she is costing the district lot of money and she is not doing anything remotely helpful for deeoic also apparently doesn't want me stay he did anyone other than my own child in the district which is a bizarre response to a huge email that I sent to the district that was her response is she talking to anyone besides her own kid so that's the level of incompetence and dr. Smith so I really would like to have agendas her contract and remove her from this District thank you I like to take a point of privilege or actually a point of order in accordance with our board by lot 9323 if a present patients such as public comment included charges or complaints against any employee of the district including the superintendent regardless of whether or not the employee was identified in any way the board will ask in this is us and ask for mister Nikon for personnel can you please provide such public comment member with a district process by which this complaint can be resolved thank you just understand that based on your comments you do have concerns regarding a district employee as such please submit in writing at your complaint as president on the seller stated based on board by long 9323 that's the process to but the human resources your complaint in writing please feel free to contact me at the district office if you need further information I'll be happy to guide you through the process can we do I appreciate that information I'm sorry that I have to do it thank you so much we need to continue with public comment can we go to the next person please yes the next speaker is MS if you have a n pleased if I ever mispronounce your name if you could please reintroduce yourself you have 3 minutes if you can unmute I'm animated and remember Laredo if you could pronounce it correctly so thank you everyone I just thought maybe you would be helpful to suggest I felt the measure K chairperson and the cboc chairperson provide regular updates may be on a daily basis a future board meetings I work in fine and that each of our board meetings as a lot of label information shared with these update the board community members and parents can become well-informed on the ongoing process and maybe we can also understand the challenges faced by the committee members in the sky Niner could be helpful for the much-needed transparency committee chairperson but also by thank you very much and I wish all of you a great school year thank you next week have a Miss Carlson if you could have meat please okay thank you I'm good evening Lindsay Carlson can fit you in a second I just want to do it first thing the interim superintendent Keller if you're taking on this assignment and not sure if he's arrived I know there's a lot of challenges with the district is facing and many of them are solvable with the right kind of leadership after hearing of his appointment to this position and running in the background, providing the strong leadership that the district office needs at this time Culver City Unified parent Guardians and community members are all rooting for him we really need a push notification system for school board getting notices and agendas the city has one of these is very easy to sign up for it and get notice of all city council commissioned a committee meeting I counted five of them not even including the 2 meeting appoint an interim superintendent glaringly clear to me and I think others do that we need something to provide notice that when I'll be at the need to check the website every night just to see if there's a lot of work on our part to do that is we do need to talk about North and whether under what circumstances to continue the district Elation ship with that Organization for all the reasons that have been previously mentioned that numerous meetings by teacher and staff members really don't need to reiterate here I know you've all been there. take your time, but also now it's clear that members of the school board have conspired with yours to harass and intimidate they community members the spring by a frivolous cease-and-desist letters but I think it's really important that you all again. looking for a fight sometime this evening thanks your type thank U next we have Melissa's iPhone I think this is Miss Stuckey yes thank you thank you board members Instagram stories and Laredo for standing up for your district and eliminating a superintendent mr. Tran it's been the best decision and vote the board has made over the last couple you should take a break from social media and stop attacking your community members and laying blame where it shouldn't single-handedly with the president and Missoula and the former board members you all voted for the worst superintendent ccusd we can hope for better movement going forward the previous board made decisions which were detrimental to both my high school daughters while private local school state open in progress during the pandemic you shut the doors to many who suffered only to return to school clothes physically the schools physically reminded disaster and many students remain fearful and anxious as a violence continued to rise at ccusd my oldest graduated unsure of her future and still struggles visit my youngest away from the crumbling district and I she is happy where she's at now is you getting a new interim superintendent I hope for a better future at this District voting no on any future Bond issues regarding Brookwood would be ideal look for the city the previous board has mismanaged and wasted the city's money and State dollars on many things including new or and Brooke would I recommend a no vote again I want to thank all the parents please speak up and have been at my side for the last two years I hope you continue doing what you do best thank you for all the board members who have stood up for us as well all the staff teacher with many other people staff deserve better in the students deserve better so please continue keeping for better Improvement thank you a president that's all our public comment on an engine dies so let's move to ccusd employee groups can we hear first from Miss Hammy Miss hammy Missoula and members of the board I'm happy to be here this evening I'd like to welcome our new in superintendent yet again I know we just had our backs for breakfast and I was able to do it in that venue so and I'd like to offer a welcome to him again he's got a lot of work to do and and I are looking forward to meeting with him to start that process the other thing I'd like to bring to the attention of the board is that a lot of people have contacted me and my unit about applying for jobs and not getting them I think that we did you set up a meeting with the superintendent and assistant superintendent of HR Jose Alarcon discuss the things have been brought to our attention we have so many vacancies that we still have left buy people apparently can go to employment agencies to look for work and be sent to our school district to work when they've already applied for work here and haven't. jobs that were vacant but they have like so there's something wrong with that picture if someone can be qualified enough to be sent to us through an agency but not qualified enough to be chosen for the job so is that it is a conversation that I'll look forward to having with the assistant superintendent and and the super mister give me the same thing as what we had said we sit at the opening day breakfast and I didn't get the Tom Petty introduction song here I want to welcome to superintendent as well I'm thanks for taking a couple minutes that he was able to speak to us at the welcome back abandoned I know we have a meeting scheduled pretty soon with him so I'm just excited to be able to talk to discuss some of the many issues that we see from our perspective that he has a lot of our community members Welcome to the new teachers we see if he actually had a welcome back lunch in for them we welcomed 45 do teachers and nurses last Friday I think that is a record number that we have brought it before so welcome to all of them and welcome to any classified staff and Administration staff especially the new principals on dr. Thomas at the high school dr. Williams at the middle school doctor O'Grady at Farragut and I know what just on the board send it please we have a new leader for Culver Park as well I'll take my union hat off for a second speaker had on here when we are doing this let's not forget Culver Park and make sure that we have a student board representative for Coral Park High School as well we did have one in the path I must make sure that that happens but we do have a student for garbage Burkholder Park at the welcome back I talked about issues like we need to strengthen our partnership we need to end the war you need to end a lot of frivolous spending that we secretly in the district which of those Rascals Abe to call Don Mitchell on along my route Aaron interpreter of play Buena themselves thank you so much that's what they were interpreting simultaneously and impulse my contract so we still have a lot of outside contract for the the Tamia just talked about you know we're still contracting-out special ed teacher special ed we do we have to do that we've what's the district to find an A&W around contract I know mr. Tran seemed like he was about ready to find that Emma used to hopefully we can have that mou signs the district the next couple weeks and presented to the board that really it just going to put some limits on outside contract when they come to Union membership so we want to see that we've been asking for this mou a long time I do have some Grace that we have a little bit of a transition. Here now with leader so I'm actually feel fine with that but that is at the top of our agenda because we've been asking for quite a while to get this mou contracts and also we've been asking for a while that we need to have a discussion at least the board level discussion about newer than the newer contract I think that's important that that is something that is actually discussed in an open board session so I look forward to that believe we had a board member who did it ask for that several nodding heads already on that so we're looking forward to seeing some kind of agenda is discussion on the contract with the new earthquake group thank everyone and have a great night thank you so much now I would like to welcome our leaders oh I'm so sorry thank you so much I'd like to invite not mr. ronchetti from Max if he's present to provide membership reports good evening yes I'm I'm present thank you don't have a lot for Mac like to stay walk on to dr. Keller and thank him for the time that I had on the phone with him today and look forward to doing some rewarding and productive work with him so I'm not under 7.4 superintendent's report I'd like to invite our staff to provide their report also I'd like to mention that if there's anything that you would like to respond do any of the public comments that were done in items not in the gym. You're more than welcome to provide input at this time and and we can commence with Doctor Baxter keyboard president Amezola I'd like to start with some really good news that we learned two days ago 91.5% of our students earned a 3 or higher on the AP World History exam and California only 65.8% or in a 3 or higher and 91.5 of our students are in 23 or higher special thanks to teachers Miss kinsella Miss Snyder mr. men and their dedication and bringing this opportunity for our students we appreciate your hard work and dedication to our students in our school schools are brimming with excitement as teacher staff principles and community members ready the school for opening tomorrow we look forward to welcoming back students at each site and having leadership from the district and from the board walkthrough and celebrate with you thank you thank you President Obama solo on Friday I have the opportunity to visit the new teacher orientation doctor Baxter staff educational services staff knocked it out of the park they did a great great great job I wanted to know what Mr long said we do have a lot of new staff members we had 45 teachers there in addition we've hired a lot of classified staff we have a lot more on the board report tonight that comes through with a lot of effort from our HR team they've done a fantastic job this summer really working hard to hire new and qualified staff I just want to commend them and I want to wish everybody a great year thank you and good evening Echo the sentiment about students being back in the building tomorrow I'll have the pleasure of a spending the morning with the high school team I did want to address a concern that that came forward about speaking with other children not of their own and I want to refer and I can put some information down about the family educational rights and Privacy Act call FERPA which also present prevent parents were not the parent or family Guardian from receiving information about other students this includes engaging in conversations and asking questions about others so if there is a no either way if if there's a if we're trying to accomplish a certain thing we just need to get clarity on what we're trying to do and then we can we can figure out how to make it open and available to the community I'm very excited that our our lgbtq task force is scheduled and ready to go we have an item on the agenda tonight doctor Vinnie Pompeii who's been in Culver City before and done some really great work with the uptake of violence lgbtq Community it is timely and worth it and I am pleased to be part of the work thank you I see we do not have our board members our student board members present I've asked our executive assistant Miss Williams too as soon as we get the names from our school sides if she could invite them to csba training for students and hopefully we look forward to welcoming them when school starts in joining us and our meeting now I like for us to go to 7.6 + welcome members of the audience to provide public comment on items of the on the agenda I encourage those who are in person wishing to speak to please complete speakers card and cemented submitted to the executive assistant those who are unzoom wishing to speak please raise at this time your your Zoom hand and please at this time we ask all of you to state your name State the agenda item you wish to speak on and your comment on that agenda at this I'm you can speak on anything that is that are items on the agenda so let's see how many individuals we have for public comment right now in the room we have one speaker and so far on Zoom we have one speaker so let's do 3 minutes each and let's commence I'll leave a public, open at this time just in case anybody's missing at mister mister you can approach the podium okay well I wanted to comment on the purchase orders tonight and I just think it's out of control we're giving schools and other location to season opener for example at Farragut is asking for $8,000 for paper $8,000 and that amounts to 160 cases of paper so I can imagine how an elementary school a 500 students can possibly use 160 cases of paper when now we don't even use that much paper we spent millions of dollars providing iPads to all the cases to students so something's wrong and I will spin a teacher in high school so I know how much paper gets used and that was at the high school level so I really have out at you know I never thought I would say good things about LAUSD but we were limited paper that's what this seems like I want to say that the office of Child Development I didn't add it all up because it's such a large number they have so many you can go through 10000 here twenty thousand here it's just the enormous number and really it's like they just put it out everybody says oh okay we're going to vote for it you know you can have all this money and then it's approved up front so it's like a line of credit and I just get to draw down on it. The course of the year and I really don't think this is responsible and we thought I'd deficit but we're running and we're looking at some serious issues and that's when the first places to cut is all these over expenses and I don't know if these two items of classroom expense I don't does but in any event it's time to cut back and it's time to go to the school sites and everybody else and say look at your budget take out the things that are necessary sometimes just go through and say why 50% of what you put on this piece of paper sometimes that's how corporations do and I know as I said I come from a place of austerity we did not have ever have so much paper so I think it's time for the board to investigate this and obviously we have a new person of Business Services but the Board needs to provide directions to the interim superintendent and the new director busy Services that's all I have to say thank you thank U next we have Miss Anders on zoo okay so he owes as usual but I know you'll just tell me to come to their offices and go through boxes even though every single invoice in the receipt so that's really horrible and not transparent at all paper was one also $175,000 for field trips which I thought was interesting during the summer there's a lot of Dai Bank fees and regularly I'm concerned about a lot of them going to ocde that seems to be a lot more than usual but maybe I'm not remembering correctly and then as usual a lot of superintendent cause that have no receipts or any information other than with the superintendent credit card just want to go paid off his Akasha tab as well while we're thinking about it so that was 9.3 and 9.10 the crossing guards great so excited for crossing guards I haven't seen any of the painting or anything else that was promise but what a shock I would like to make sure that you guys are aware that during last year at the end of the year for some reason there were two crossing guards at Braddock and a lenda which was stupid and confusing and that's or we need to crossing guards we need a crossing guard at Braddock and then we need a crossing guard at either elenda and Garfield oral ended Franklin having one at the very end Farragut with the people training some people getting into parking is really helpful so please don't waste two bodies at one intersection and making things more confusing and stupid but that's my comment on 9.10 I have no idea because again you guys don't attach anything what are fifteen point shoes for 15.5 your rejecting claims what are the claims you were ejected I have no clue so please I would like for the future for this board and this District leadership and Financial be more transparent and attach things that people are going to be curious about why are there big numbers for things that seemed unusual why are there in a superintendent charges what is he spending at the end year $5,000 on we'd like to know I'm glad he's gone but I still like to know what he wasted money off so those are my comments on the agenda items for this evening thank you sorry purpose if I could just take a point of personal privilege to remind the community that the governing body is not at Liberty to share confidential legal matters with the public so I understand curiosity believe me I've been there but we are not at Liberty to share private litigation I'm in any form of attachment or any form to members apologize but that is above our pay grade so what you're saying is the claims and 15 at this time the board cannot delivery on this between public comment and the board we when we address this comment later on in the agenda we will deliver great thank you so much for the members we are finished with all of the request for public comment we will close public comment for seven point 7.6 thank you so much okay moving to 7.7 upon the request that four members have a new rotation and since we have a new school year I'm going to ask our board to draw numbers I I know I already asked you but I lost it so I apologize so if we can get at least four it's on at 4 until December when I'm no longer president okay so we will use this rotation until December when we reorganize and we have the new president okay so if I can please get who is number one was me as a door all right to 3 Ryan and that makes can't for Rick said we will use this rotation and of course we I always rotated you know every so today you will be one next board meeting you before okay that's how I rotate it so that way not every ifork sample do not like to go first I like to hear everybody's opinion and you don't give my opinion so maybe some of you like to go last two or like to go first and that's why I'd like to just make it a systematic so that nobody has stopped burden let's start with members of the board for your yeah I was going to read a band thank you so much for the president in college we haven't had a regular schedule meeting for a while it's been a really busy summer for all of us most notably for me I had the privilege of attending a trip with the Jewish Federation of La along with mr. electron and I look forward to I don't think Now's the Time to look forward to figuring out assisting the way to share some of my now lived experience from going veran and also I'm Alvin's Palatine where there is well we it wasn't education trip with a bunch of Education leaders so it was great to join arms with teachers and school board members and district and Leadership level on education leaders from not just a label actually from the bay area as well I'm going to be there and then to meet with education leaders and Israel and Palestine to meet with the students who are going to school conflict on the issues of conflict resolution which we know we are facing here in our own backyard I'm so I just look forward to sharing those experiences of my colleagues and with the community at a later date I also am looking forward to walk YouTube back to school tomorrow it's very exciting and bursitis I first time since I was in the district at a welcome back events mmm very excited for that I plan on actually visiting all the schools but tomorrow I will be I'm welcoming kids back at Culver City High School, I'll be joined by I'll be joined by Congressman, great in that welcome to look for to I'm seeing all the joyous faces of the students at the high school but also just throughout the district as we are getting back into the school year and doing so in a fresh new environment I'm just really looking forward I also just had the opportunity really quickly just to meet the new teachers on Friday and that was also very exciting for me as well as being with the all staff orientation yesterday so I commend at service I'm for doing both of those out so quickly just wanted to come in the office and t.i. I know we can talk about it later date I mean at a later and then the item approve that contract with the lgbtq are you eating the the contract I'm fused from the lgbtq grant that we got but you know what I talked about this a lot in pride pride month because of to being a board member of our part of the job I guess is get to go to these conferences and you meet with school board members and education leaders from across the US and often reflect how when I'm in situations with other members from really rad and really conservative states with her spiting for basic things Equity statement there fighting just to let you know see all students as whole and I'll people that's all they're fighting for human rights I think often and hard about how lucky I am to be in this in this blue State and then I come back to my own backyard and I'm seeing what's happening in Glendale most recently were seeing what's happening at I believe Lake Arrowhead with the recent murder of the woman who was flying pride flag outside of her shop in our own back yard so I know we pride ourselves on being from this great blue state but it's worth noting that there are different and lighter shades of blue than others in to me that just called us to work that we need to do here in our own backyard with our students and our committee members who are from that community and I just look forward to collaborating with all of our professionals that alignment at every level in our district extremely every level of government in the community to make sure that we're locking arms with all of our kids and people that's full human beings thank you I'm going to I'm going to Echo some of the sentiment that board member at the door I just spoke about because there are definitely neighbouring districts and maybe not not as close to not not exactly our neighbors but close enough districts that are fighting to fighting on both sides of a student privacy and and parental rights in in terms of outing our students by a certain date to their to their parents and sometimes it's not very safe and I'm very proud to be representing this District in a place where I know that that that we are trying to make sure that our students are feel a sense of belonging and that we are trying to put better supports there it is an evolution it is a journey and you know one of the reasons why I am I was interested in running in the first place was because I knew that I can be a part of a district that could improve belonging and improve Wellness and I'm I'm I'm I'm really happy that I'm here and I'm happy that I'm here with my colleagues that have similar values to support our students so I want to I want to thank you for in that and I also want to thank our our staff who are doing the utmost in preparing first day of school tomorrow and welcome welcoming back our students and who are thinking about making sure that they can have them the best possible outcomes and I want to thank every single one of us from from facilities to our classroom teachers to our 8 to every every single person involved and also it's been it's been a busy past week or so and I also want to welcome dr. Keller and thank him for taking on this challenge I know he's not here yet but I do want to say to our to our public that he didn't have to take on this Challenge and he's he's really doing it because he has a a sense of purpose that he can he can deliver something for our students in our families that that only his experience and talent can in the short time that he will be with us so I am very grateful and for myself I have very much a huge growth mindset right now to try to absorb everything that I I can while while in his atmosphere and I'm looking forward to when I'm Sofia Gomez rap comes back and to welcome also our new student board members who will be coming to us who will be elected in in September in the beginning probably in beginning of September and so that we will again be completed as a board and as District leadership and I will now that my students both my students are Consolidated at one school at the high school tomorrow I will I will be at the church School complex to say hi to folks and welcome them back and a SB will be out there with science a welcoming back students as well as our marching band so get ready to be welcomed back ain't allowed and proud way for a couple Pride time I'm looking forward to seeing all of you tomorrow whether it's at in front of the high school in front of the middle school or at Farragut I'm going to try to see if I can get around but I'm also really looking forward to meeting new staff members especially our new site leaders when we get the chance and there's some places that I haven't although I've been to all of our it's before I haven't been able to visit yet with a you know. When the classes were in session because I just wasn't available last spring at that time so I'm looking forward to that this fall and just to see everyone in in session so thank you so much to everyone and have a wonderful first day tomorrow take me to present I just want to extend the warmest warmest welcome to all of our students we're so excited to have you joining us and back in in school hope you had a great summer and hope you are as excited as a everyone else is for you to be starting up school and being with your your peers and learning exciting things and and discovering and doing all that and again thank you to the families for entrusting us with your children and you promise to do our best buy them thank you to the teachers and support staff and classified staff throughout the district I hope you had a great summer but thank you for everything that you do for the students in for the schools we couldn't do this without you I'm on my way but to drop by a couple of the staff meetings that happened after the whole district meeting yesterday and it's one of those things where I can look at those with a little bit of nostalgia as you're in a staff meeting you're wanting to get to your classroom put up one more bulletin board or Staples you know but it's also that first time in in the summer that you're back with your colleagues and back with your peers and you know there is no night when it is a difficult to sleep as the night before school starts it's so you know so much possibility and unknown it's exciting and I do miss that I also want to thank all of our principals and school leadership and the district in a leadership physically are senior happened and dr. Baxter in particular for just helping us through this transition and making sure that everything runs smoothly at the school sites and at the district and you know we are going through some transitions that's something with peace out by students for students at the most normal thing in the world to come back to school and enjoy that and you will make that possible so thank you very much for that I look forward to working with dr. Keller and my colleagues here on the board and throughout the district if we can't in moving forward and doing the students business and doing doing the best we can for students and schools and the community thank you all very much thank you so I will start by just announcing not to make it seem like it's going to be long it's not but just by announcing that the Culver City High School marching band is performing at Fiesta love Iona this weekend so many of us I'd probably all of us will be there as much as we can and certainly working sometime at the CCSD Booth as well as some other booths but are our marching band and dancers will be performing on Saturday from 5:45 to 6:50 I think that means on that stage so I encourage folks to come out and support our students at that time and also to come visit us at the CCSD booths that will be taking turns working at and I want to extend a very special thank you to our district office staff and our executive leaders and their teams I know that your teams are not here with us right this moment but they're holding you all up so that you look like you're standing straight right now and I know a tremendous amount has been asked of you the past few weeks I just really want to make sure that we express our gratitude acknowledge the event and then sweet that you've had to carry and express our gratitude for really keeping us afloat we wouldn't be able to do it without you I want to extend an incredible welcome back to all of our staff I definitely appreciate my colleagues or recognizing our staff's effort in getting us ready for our students with a wonderful welcome talk about it on Monday and I'm just really grateful for the contract that was brought to us and approved in March because we would be as wonderful offerings from USC from Rossi and what a gift to have a neuroscientist who is currently contributing message to the field of Education speak to us that morning and I just really felt incredible energy in the frost on Monday and it was quite contagious and I appreciate it. We need it and I stand my gratitude to all of our educators and I give a big warm welcome to our students tomorrow I'm looking forward to seeing some folks in person tomorrow and I hope we have a wonderful Academic Year thanks thank you thank you everyone in soccer killers on here I'm going to take an opportunity to stay warm and just sending just like this most incredible thank you to our staff the staff that's sitting here before us and like dr. Kent said those who support you to be sitting here looking like you're in one piece and tomorrow you have 7,600 students showing up WiDi bushytail ready to learn ready to explore life and be curious and without you step up and doing everything that you do and trickling down at how it goes down to the site leaders to the teachers to facilities to because it starts here right and I am incredibly grateful I want to say a special thanks to Miss Williams I know it has been tough for you also and extra work we heard from public comment that we had a lot of Summer meetings and the summer meetings were all announced on Ark over Pride so usually our meetings are now than cover Pride but also when they become featured in for an email get sent out to individuals who have entered their email into boarddocs so our meetings are notified to our community I encourage you to join cover Pride if you want to learn of our meeting now a good practice is that if I give a speech somewhere where more than two board members are presents that I should probably do it in public comment as part of my report in the community because it's it's important for the community to also learn what I said when there was more than two board members present and on Monday as the president given the opportunity in the great privilege and honor 8 with great humility to welcome our staff and teachers and I'm going to read my speech for the community and for staff who already heard this you have a five minute break because you already heard it but this is really far community so as you all remember it was after a tropical storm and so we came in on Monday morning brighten early and the first thing I said was thank you all for coming together on this rainy morning I'd like to extend my gratitude to the maintenance and operations team for ensuring our facilities were ready for us today came over the weekend to ensure that everything was ready the rain may have poured for 24 hours cleansing our streets and they are but it also gave us a glimpse of a brighter future much like a rainbow After the Storm now I want to address the elephant in the room the tornado the past two weeks no pun intended with all of these weather metaphors but climate change is real not only were we preparing to welcome our students back to school but we also underwent a significant leadership transition at the district level I mentioned this not to dwell on the challenges we face but to express my heartfelt thanks thank you to the dedicated staff and teachers who continue their own way bring commitment to welcome our students back thank you for School site leaders who stepped up to prepare each site for our students and our staff and thank you to our District staff for coming together to ensure the note  was left unfinished as we work towards this day and tomorrow this transition has provided me with a more profound understanding of the rules we must Embrace to guarantee the success of our district collaboration and Collective effort and I want to emphasize Collective effort because I feel like that's missing sometimes these are imperative as we journey towards this rainbow together in the apps the formal state of the district address I'd like to shift our Focus to discuss some key priorities for the coming year first and hansi support for unduplicated students our primary goal is to continue improving the local control account already plan ensuring the funds are effectively allocated to benefit our most vulnerable students English Learners low income on house and those in foster care 2nd and parents First Student Success dedicated to enhancing the professional growth of our staff particularly and seals that enable us to improve support for students with disabilities across all educational settings moreover we are proactively exploring exploring Innovative approaches to expand our classroom staff and Recruit new teachers third modernizing facilities for Better Learning environment I'm going efforts to our facilities Bond initiative are critical three out of the five necessary steps already complete have already been completed our goal is to move forward with this initiative to improve our educational facilities and create a more conductive learning environment for our students are teachers and our staff fourth competitive salaries and benefits for educators and our staff we must figure out how to retain and attract the best staff and teachers we are dedicated to the stewardship of the ccusd long-term Revenue initiative which will help us do this this initiative will allow us to offer end of salaries and benefits the reflect the exceptional dedication and skills of our educators and finally following the fruitful listening sessions at the end of last school year I want to reaffirm my unwavering commitment to conduct fall listening sessions attentively listening to your concern seeking your input and working diligently to shape our district into best possible environment for every student teacher and we were already compiled the data and we are prepared and have prepared a presentation which we eagerly anticipate sharing with all of you this fall this presentation was already presented to our community so we hope to share it with our staff in the end these for priorities will play a pivotal role in helping ccusd achieve our Collective objective we have one and that is empowering our students to step into their genius we must achieve this by providing excellent educational opportunities however we must also remember their children are still recovering from the pandemic there for it is crucial that we continue to provide them with the support they need where that's in the form of social emotional support or Essentials like food shelter tutoring thank you for granting me this opportunity to address. today and more importantly thank you for everything you do see sip weather Culver City let's welcome our students with even more joy more warmth and more of everything they need to ensure it wonderful start of the year which is tomorrow okay everybody thank you for allowing me that opportunity can we do
