Keller nice to see you here I wanted to speak about enrollment and I brought chart tonight because some people said that others been a question as to whether or not to send this map matches School District map so I do have the sense this map that's here and blue and I confirmed it with Washington DC I called up the sister very nice there and this is from the LA County actually the registrar's office and so this you can see this map and then this is I called up again since it's office I spoke to lead statistician there and they're very nice and we talked about that numbers of children who actually live in Culver City between the ages of 5 and 17 the meanest is 50 to 14 note to self most reliable number but it is between a for 704 and 5725 those numbers are two standard deviations out which all the doctors isn't lived understand hope this is the best number this 5214 look up other school districts El Segundo and Redondo Beverly Hills Manhattan we know that about at most 80 per cent in Culver City of the children aged 5 to 17 who live here would ask enroll and I think it's less but so we would expect about 4171 children aged 5 to 17 to be enrolled here instead we have residents or people say their residents they say the residents are 50 to 11 so we talked about that 1,000 students that's the difference between actual residents and people who say they're so that's all I have to say thank you thank you Miss Marty hago evenings Word empty montiavo I am the CCMS math teacher and I am also on the Labor Management partners and I'm also a parent of a 6th grader this year so I really wanted to invite everyone to our back to school night tomorrow it starts around 5 and ends around 7:30 depending on if you have zero. I know my colleagues were really hard thing to have this presentation with top 10 minutes with the adults a 7-minute passing through his adult can see how fun it is to look for a classes like there Panthers I also wanted to say you know we work so hard in spite of so many of our working conditions that were hoping the district can help us with a lot of our air conditioning is not working in the classroom I want to say some of the classrooms are upwards at 78 degrees or more 80° and if you add 32 36 more bodies in there it's really challenging work I know if the parents comes tomorrow night might be cooler in the evening but you know right around noon right after lunch it's really really hot so we really really hope that our facilities and that case for an our working conditions are student learning conditions we really need to make sure that that happens what other saying the last 30 seconds in spite of getting Teton Thai we still show up I'm still show up we still work we're writing emails on Labor Management Partnerships of ICC everyone people's rights I really want the pr process to be you know something that works I movies are digital signatures were asking for 9 signatures on the pr like why is it like months apart sometimes like 1 month apart for something that I did in July Diane June so I can start back to school you see how hard we work and hopefully you'll fight for us to thank you and your family good evening boards get to see you again dr. I have a few announcements for you all it's September school's back in session walk to school day is coming up in October and here's what we got going on for so we have a new website if you haven't in a while please go to CC Wok & Roll, you'll find them all of our events in our activities is including a updated routes to school maps for up to the school and we'll be updating all of the school's programs in progress and activities as we go along we have a new parent travel survey out there so please help read the word for that we're just asking parents to fill this out it takes about 2 or 3 minutes we have an English and in Spanish. It's our way of finding out how people actually do get to school whether you walk B Drive used transit whatever that might be any barriers that are in preventing you from driving less we'd like to know about that and of course how can we improve and every week will be doing a drawing for free prize I'm a goody bag of stuff so if you can just take the survey in the drawing it'll help us out a lot in what we do that I'll be open the month this weekend is our Middle School bike days they're really great event it's only for the middle schoolers this is how we encourage the kids to really ride at ride safely to school stop by the middle school this morning and got there about quarter to 8 and they're already got 50 bikes in the bike racks numbers are way up this year so I'm really excited about this we have free helmet for the kids blocks lights we had food courtesy of Culver City bus and will be visiting Culver City by so we can teach the kids how to put their bikes on the buses as well I'm sneaking combined biking to school I may safely and easily if possible and then the following weekend is our Walk and Roll festivals their 11th Annual Festival it's co-sponsored by the Culver City rotary Foundation we have multiple skills courses for the kids because the older kids on a group ride in the neighborhood so they can practice your skills as well so join us that's on September 24th from 10 until 2 thank you very much thank you mr. Sandman so we're going to move to our public, from folks on zoom and I just want to I thought that was for items on the agenda or did you want to speak on both okay so in that case because we are making an exception and adding someone even after having clothes I'm going to also make that exception for Mr Ruden who has raining in progress so we will add both mr. milky and mr. rude and so will start now with mr. milk and then move to our 8 online speakers and as a reminder our public comment on items not on the agenda is now closed just wanted to communicate to the public in a way that feel not fair I understand that thank you though David milky yes I teach at Culver City High School nice to see you all again happy start to the new school year when I was talking to Ray long earlier he said Mike Reynolds was going to be here so I said I'm coming out nice to see you like we had wonderful working relationships the union and Mike during his time here and I told Ray get to the table right now while Mike is here also want to welcome dr. Keller nice to meet you and my students Sofia Gomez yay nice to see you student board member first thing I was talking to a community member who said Dave is it really awful over at the high school I'm hearing that it's off and I hate this because it's great at the high school it's great we're diverse and comfortably diverse and how these things get going in the community drive me nuts because when I came here 19 39 I said this is like the United Nations and how great is this and reason more diverse now so people in the community know things are great at Culver High I was concerned this year that we're still below the state-mandated minimum $4 spent in the classroom how is that possible I mean that should never even become an issue I mean we I think want to spend money close to the kid listen to be below the minimum that's embarrassing and show them that leads me to spending decisions and again the big one I saw $600,000 tonight new Earth I know we've got a 3-year contract I think I think this is here to I've not read the contract I don't know if it can be modified we have said in the past if we need more counselors let's hire counselors let's hire credentialed counselors by the way I'm a credenza school counselor there's something to be said for that the other concern is that I have been trying to find out who evaluates new Earth and have not received any response in this goes back the last school year were communicated to the superintendent's staff saying when there's a three-year contract there should be some degree of evaluation and thank you nice to see you oh children attending Farragut Elementary I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude over the past year there have been numerous instances Community State challenges in a district leading to Justified criticism during each board meeting however I am pleased to share a recent experience at Farragut Elementary resolved within 48 hours are tongue kindergarten a toddler hours further cut without negotiation but the decision was with retracted very quickly I would like to extend my thanks to those who played a pivotal role in this process including our board members. tell her doctor Baxter and Mr Alec on your prompt response did not go unnoticed and we truly appreciate your effort looking ahead I do hope when deciding on budget cuts we are able to prioritize our current employees with credentials over outside contacts that have newer I hope that future future decisions impacting our students can be made with more open communication and negotiation to ensure the best outcome for a student staff and teacher thank you thank you Aunt Nexus Lindsay Carlson and I'm just going to remind folks to please let us know the topic as you begin thank you so much good evening of Ashley couple of topics one regarding the discussion regarding yours and weather what circumstances to continue the relationship with the organization has raised many issues with organization from the district selecting and counseling professionals to services that are actually. worms and butter those that are performing and have the requisite licenses to misuse of funds by the organization but recently has also come to light through a public records request that she was with you that new to harass and intimidate a cease-and-desist letters after and they really should be rewarded for it with another million dollars my District budget this year I'm in Courage by the responses from both the new high school and middle school principal concern about whether there are sufficient safety measures needed violent events on campus which is East Hills Shooting which I hope we never have to experience Elementary School other recommendations the point that they want to bring up on that so thank you I appreciate it thank you speaker is Melissa Stuckey followed by Melissa Sanders and then Andrew Bachman I'm sorry I'm assuming it's because it says Melissa's iPhone Melissa Melissa's iPhone available I will move to Melissa Sanders we can come back to Melissa's iPhone a couple of things one I thought the the minimum but if that's not true yeah you guys have got to stop doing less than the minimum it should be way more than the minimum and cutting classroom 8 hours and certainly not the way to go so please work on that my biggest concern is that myself as several other people in this community are still waiting for even an apology from the district or waiting for an investigation by the district on how they're too sitting board members Kelly chance and Paula and Missoula who clearly worked with new words to attempt to intimidate us with a cease-and-desist letters the fact that ran and Jennifer Smith and Joanna Brody met with them a week later is also very suspect the fact that nothing is being investigated about the situation the fact that you were so still even considered a vendor is it's just an excuse. You've got no certified clinical staff are kids through then they're not license and they are not on campus this is a joke the worst way so I beg District to do the right Africa land moral thing and investigate the situation on how 10 people were targeted by new Earth for the sea desist letters is that will really be an interesting answer cancel their contract if this was any other District they would have been cancelled the moment you heard about the letter but we haven't even gotten apology from you people it's that horrify Melissa's phone are you available now yes sorry I couldn't unmute myself thank you for letting me speak welcome new superintendent we're very glad to have you here curious where are the eight two eight members and parents who all spoke of last night's city council violence it would be lovely to have all of their voices here at the ccusd board meeting Ashley when we have violence existing in our own school it wasn't a gun used on the first day of school when the fight broke out just after school campus it was a nice remember I'm nice so yeah finally stuff happen here at TCU it was great to hear you speak of mr. But I would hope and wish you can only do the same and better up there on the diet the past couple of years has proved otherwise I do recommend a vote on any future School bands at this time UK parties have been poorly managed and there will be no change finally there's some ongoing Ada issues for students wheelchair elevator issues why isn't has been addressed this was brought up last year which the retired business superintendent basically dinner issues even existed please address these issues going forward thank you for your time the next speaker is Andrew Bachmann followed by Selena Rahim and Eric Rudin hi this is Andrew Lackman I am a proud parents of a 5th grader at El Marino Elementary School and we love our community we love our school and we appreciate that everyone wants kids in mind which is why I was concerned when I heard that we weren't making the 65% and Dustin of the classroom I think it is very important that we make sure that our teachers are well compensated and that we have the resources we need for them to do their job and I also heard a good discussion that you said that that and also the discussion with respect to with respect to the least around Newburgh I think I am very appreciative that that contract was changed in my experience having done public Contracting I think that may have been a little bit generous and is not in line with my experience with what happens if you don't live up to a public contract but my hope is Mister Reynolds in Redford wonderful things about that perhaps we can look into our procurement processes to make sure that we have good contracts that keep our contractors accountable finally respect to transparent because I've heard so much discussion measure K and I know it mean I don't know if the members have been replaced I think putting a greater emphasis of making their reports public and showing where our money is being spent is important for someone who works closely how many members of the school board and outside to make sure that measure K path I think that accountability in that transparency will help everyone in it as well thank you everyone for giving me the time and when item 13.3 comes up I wouldn't request to be put on comment agenda for that that is the excuse absences policy thank you all very much for giving me the time to speak have a good evening mr. lockman please raise your hand again when we get to seven points 6 which is four items on the agenda okay game my good evening I think it may be on the wrong one the wrong day form here because I was actually wanting to make a statement with the meeting item 13 excused absence policy so I thank you for saying that miss her hand perhaps you could raise her hand again when we get to 7.6 would that work thank you and alas we are recruiting good evening everyone. My name is Eric Ruden I'm a proud parent of a new teacher at El Rincon who you can probably hear right now superintendent members of the board and our district had to have taken the time to speak with me about issues I greatly appreciate it I just wanted to Echo the concerns of the previous speakers regarding new Earth Stacy on campus and the measure K funds everyone's already said it so I Echo those as well thank you very much thank you so I'll just offer right now that we're done with public comment if staff have anything that they would like to respond to or elaborate on of course the board is not able to deliver on any of the items that were raised during this comment. But if staff has anything we can leave a moment for that now and if it's for another time that's also okay okay so what stopped was of course taking notes and we'll be reaching back out to folks on with responses as appropriate and I'll turn it back over to our facilitator board president on Missoula thank you so much we will take item 7.3 when is ccusd employee crew and I'd like to welcome with Miss Debbie Hammett very much present I would like to take an opportunity like Reynolds as our interim assessment wonderful to have you back Mike and get a lot of fabulous work together when you were here and I'm hoping very much but that will continue and that will be able to accomplish even more while you're here going to but I also would like to say I enjoyed our first meeting together and I guess you can bring to the attention of the administration and I'm looking at our purchase requisitions for later on in the evening I did want to express my appreciation for the fact that we have a TSA to provide monthly in and I think that that's been a long time, probably several months if not a year more and I'm glad to see that finally coming to fruition I do have some concerns about an item on the purchase requisitions involving no reimbursement for a 22 23 TV and travel-related expenditures for $10,000 I'm not sure why we're doing these things retroactive I think that these types of conferences and Peds and travel expenses to be brought to the board before they takes place so the board can prove whether or not they think the expenditure is the realistic and needed expenditure unfortunately every time we see something on the board report for purchase requisition but that $10,000 represents some concerns about the way these conferences and the cost of the conference's especially when we're being told that one thing I wanted to talk my unit work we've been subcontracting it started during covid for instructional aides security officer I think that it's time for us to look at weaning ourselves off of non-union workers so I would and make sure that we are hiring you will eventually be union members instead of going for outside psa's and outside contractors to provide much more expensive I do have concerns about yours that's another issue that we wanted to talk about with regards to non-union Workforce use of new words increases are non-union Workforce exponentially and I think that that's something that we need to look at as well I'm let you know. I'm the first person to say that they provide some good services but the cost those services are extraordinary and I know that we will be discussing later on in the board meeting the new Earth contract so I'm looking forward to hearing what we say so thank you very much I appreciate the time thank you so much and I like to invite but mystery long thank you so much leaving everyone so I first like to report that our pre-k through Adult School morning and after care classroom teachers ptosis school counselors nurses and program Specialist or off to a great start for this new school year thanks to all of our admin and support staff as well for a good start to the school year I want especially thank dr. Keller for being available and being visible I think that very important to our staff and to our members ever taking the time to meet with me to hear the concerns of ccft I want to walk them back Mike Reynolds and I want to really say I look forward to working Mike to fix our many issues with getting staff paid on time lingering issues with the Saudis most recently as you know with the middle school with broken air conditioning units which have been a consistent issue as many of us no over the past few weeks unfortunately in the warmest time of the year which I know everyone here is well aware of a big thanks to Sean Kearney and Jose for getting the 8% process for the September text end to their stats and a big even bigger thank you to Sean for taking the time to sit down with me and explain the 8% retro and giving me the timeline that I requested so I can press that to my members who have questions about the timeline of which will be before October and actually so I can explain to them how it 8% retro work which is what I've always asked for communication of people just communicate this to me I can very easily communicate that back out to my membership as well and we have to do a better job next year of settling we can't settle in this mishmash way we did and then put all these pressures on these departments to these things done in such a short. Of time also want to thank dr. Baxter do I know is working on this after-school program for our teachers and staff and is putting in a lot of work and we're going to continue to work on that so I just want to say thank you cuz I know you have put in some hard work toward that as well today ccft and Ace met with the leaders at El Marina what's the latest on our new principal Taurus we're going out to all the new principal so we want to thank dr. K in mr. Bean for meeting with our leadership and the Reps from both unions to discuss our site partnership and we look forward to working with both of them at El Marino and look forward to meeting with the new principal at Farragut eventually and Culver City Adult School as soon as they are on board and I think then we will have all our new principals covered on tonight's agenda there is an item about being out of compliance with the state's 55% mandate on spending of the classroom there's an item asking the state for hardship and I'm little bit unclear what that mean I don't mean if that's hardship like please don't find us or please let us continue to do this practice because if it's the latter I'm completely opposed to that but I am in agreement that please don't find us we can first let's look at the 2018 Staffing on it that would actually be the first place that we should begin because that showed areas where we were not correctly spending and we're overspending outside the classroom now that is a little bit out of date because we've added so many more positions since that Staffing on it but many of those positions are actually still here secondly Vistas the board stop approving positions that are out of the classroom it's that simple it's really that simple if a position comes to you that's not in the classroom vote no it's that simple you won't go under the 55% over the under the 55% if you just bought now it's that simple so they put something to you that's been out of the classroom position simply know and that will also help fix the problem I've heard many times that the budget is a statement of our values numerous times I've heard that the budget is a statement of our values so what is that saying if we continually vote for positions that are not next to the kids in the classroom was that say about our values as a district this problem can be fixed in a multitude of ways and I've made many suggestions on simple fixes that can just kind of get us to it quickly but we shouldn't be shooting for the 55% it's like I tell my students especially my summer supposed to don't shoot for the D mites let's do better than that we shouldn't be shooting for the 55% we should be shooting much higher but we can do some things to get us to the D- right now and that's where we should get and I have a lot of ideas about that we just finished Labor Day holiday so first of all I want to appreciate the board members who took the time tweet us or Facebook us or took the time to call me on the phone or you know message me or something like that so just greatly appreciated to those of you that took that time out with me I do know there is made major labor unrest here in Los Angeles right now and I want to take some time to discuss non-union workforces here in Culver City Unified School District that we understand that groups like bisla scoot Aegis Security we get that sometimes there is a shortage like Debbie said and sometimes you just need to get a a fix in there right away and I get that I think Debbie does for the most part we do need to wean ourselves off of this and that starts with getting those positions online Debbie and I both have personal examples for example with special ed aides where we know of people who have applied for those positions and didn't get them in one of getting hired by agencies don't know how that kind of thing happens and continues to happen we're still contracting-out speech pathologists that's actually on the agenda tonight that's our unit numbers and there is not right now as of right now there is not a position on edjoin for speech pathologist now there was a position on Edwin for a speech pathologist I would say okay we can't find one so we have to contract it out but when that's not edjoin I'm saying you are union-busting you are going with a contract and there is not a position on even a joint just like there's not special ed aide twos Rite Aid twos right now on a there's two ways but not special ed a choose on edjoin right now yeah we're Contracting out those positions those are not on edjoin why those are our positions as their Union positions that takes me to PSA is Debbie mention psa's we have psa's and positions that should be Union positions we can't keep putting psa's and positions that should be your new position we need to stop that practice that leads me to New Earth we talked about this before New Earth is doing the work that councillors could do any job that new Earth is currently doing we could do I'm not saying there's duplication of services we can do that and you work knows that because when I was taken on a tour this summer I specifically said that what are you doing that we couldn't do and they didn't have an answer for that because anything they're doing we could do we need to create the positions and we need to fly him up at join and we need to hire those counselors counselors that have GPS credentials counselors that have a license and family therapy who would be ace members or the PPS credential counselors that would be ours we've had them before at the high school we had an actress Kelce or Miss guy piece to that job for a long time and did a great job mr. Brown was are at risk attendance counselor and did a great job we've had those positions before we can have them again you do not want to pull any support I want to make this clear we do not want to pull any kind of support from any student this District we want every student to get the support they need but we feel that support can be done with our employees who are licensed by the state core credential by the state who are our employees who are evaluated by our district who have the same standards that are set by our district that doesn't happen with an outside agency I believe mr. milky said tonight who is evaluating new Earth are they evaluated the same way I'm evaluated as a teacher are they the same way that mr. Smith is evaluated as a counselor no one has an answer for that why are we continuing to do this I understand there's contracts and I was high to see that amount is reduced that amount needs to continue to be reduced and needs to end for next year no more non-union positions when we can have the work done by union members when they were hired I understand there was a need we are coming out of a pandemic we had shortages we had over a year now it's time to roll up the sleeves get the job descriptions done and start hiring those counselors they should be providing the services this can be done and it must be done it was really disheartening to see a newsletter from the Culver City Democratic Club president of our Board of Education praised new Earth that was disheartening to me as a union leader to see the president of the Board of Education in the Democratic Club the Democratic Party Ashton of the labor movement freezing non-union work that really got me to see that I just couldn't believe that I think that my partners in the aft CFT and the a f c l a f l c I would not be appreciative of that I can almost guarantee that that they would not appreciate to see somebody on the Democratic party representative supporting non-union work in Culver City Unified School District we need to make that change I want to finish up with the calendar and I don't like to talk about the calendar and negotiate a calendar years but I do want to save this for about 2 years now I've said that we need a policy I'm not a policy that we already have not something that's in the Ed code or some we've already practiced around excused absences we need a policy and we will support this and I said it for two years that we would support this ask your teachers that on certain holidays on major that we refrain from big events tests major projects major assignment that I think we can sit down and kind of talk about the little details we need policy we need that policy in writing and I've been asking for that for 2 years now and I don't have it so the ball is clearly in your courts in the district court I've been asking for this and I know the community wants this she puts too much on the teachers okay there's a lot of holidays so just you know what just add a calendar with all the holidays is it going to help because I can't be expected on 40 different holidays not give a test I need to identify major holidays and we can sit down and talk about that and what we're not going to do and put that in some kind of writing like we talked about right those are we talked about that 2/2 years ago we talked about that part of our plan we still don't have in writing and we need that in writing to support those students that are going to take those days off thank you I like to know invite Miss ronchetti are you available to provide a report okay I don't be correct correct there's nothing to report other than to welcome Mr my finals back to the district and express our excitement to work with him again thank you thank you so much thank you so much everyone I let's continue with our agenda and I think I'm going to pass it I can too dr. I apologize I did superintendent where is next on the agenda and that is superintendent's report thank you very much and thanks for the warm welcome by everybody clearly Mike Reynolds has a fan club it's great to have you here Mike call here will Echo that I'm Steven Keller if you haven't met me I don't know where she look but I'll look up there I come to you from the Redondo Beach Unified School District where I was superintendent for 16 and a half years I retired January 1st 2023 I wasn't looking for anything other than I'm fun I'm going to yoga classes and taking my daughter to and from school and his phone rang and this was an interim position and I just want to say what a warm welcome what a great staff the board has really been focused on kids family and staff and I just say I didn't jibe enjoyed my time here and I know I'm going to join my time as I continue forward with the team here I just want to make it clear as for my own public statement at the last regular regularly scheduled board meeting to my intent just to be here I had a pre-arranged event in Orange County where I was helping a school district with the superintendent evaluation I was making my way back and the board meeting here and earlier than we anticipated but I do want to know I was on my way and I never am I haven't called in sick in probably 30 years and so I just feel like I called him sick and it stress me out so I apologize for not being here and then in the way of just a few quick observations I want to share with the board and I would prefer as a make these two comments to you that you just not say anything and it itches favor to me first of all I was in a district for six and a half years where we never use zoom for a board meeting so this is all so real for me to have zoom I know our teachers used it but I was in a school district where we never went to do we had a meetings and Envy in its entirety during covid we are one of the few districts to do it our district did believe it was real but we did it here to the LA County Department of Public Health guidelines and never move to the gym or the birch experience in so this is new for me and I will tell you I know some districts that were using a virtual meetings or virtual public comments I should say also have me and I moved back because of the governor's Proclamation is has expired I just will say it's great to see people in a room if you're having people talk to me and I know some people come to me and start emailed me and said would you like to meet virtually and I would say I'd prefer to meet in person I just think that's where you really get to know people I want to thank those people for going out of their way and avoiding the virtual meeting meeting with me because plenty of people have the other thing is I want to tell you when I arrive we saw a few public information we call him public records act request for information that's pretty robust in nature which is you know all about transparency and people wanting information Iris that I'm good with it I do want people to know that I think it's important as a school district that we also maintained something on our website that highlights when people ask for public information for us to have transparency to the community to show them that we're getting these were Austin what the request for 4 so I'm working with Melissa Montez and the director of school and family support service who kind of managers this information when they're our request and we are going to have a link online. Tomorrow by any means but it over the next few to make sure we're modeling transparency to the community as we of course follow the pra request that we have that we have to adhere to and we always will all right so I'm out of that so I wanted to I'm sure a quick PowerPoint I do not have control Avec Les fleurs which is really going to bother me but so I'm going to have to replant somebody else to do this but I do want to start the school year as I did for my previous 16 and a half years with what sites and although I'm new I try to get on the ground I think everybody has stated that this far and and see what's happening but I do want to acknowledge the fine folks at the school sites were making the magic happen the in the classroom in the play and the play yards in the offices in the in the office is administrators whatever you're doing really thankful and proud of the work you're doing so let's start with our first so what am I to do if it was perfect so this is the first week I'm going to go to the first line on a walk you through how to set you up for what each line and it's not just as many slides is there are schools are programmed and the first slide what I'll do is I'll show their ego Lynn house so what I want to show you is what I've done here and you're going to follow the pattern here so we got a picture of the leader of the school of course everybody knows him I want to say I've been over there the most cuz it's right next to the school and you have up there you have the current enrollment that is at the first week of school what their enrollment is and then and then what that number is over last year's enrollment at about this time so did example of giving insulin house first one and they actually have about 36 more kids than they did last year at this time I think it's good to see you're home and Trends we talked about this kind of behind the scene up there you'll see what the focus is for each school and so as the principal and find later that's who I don't need to read but I love the whole kind of roach and and taking pride in and what they do and so you everybody sees the pattern that we're going to continue for Alesso at our next School Farragut and we are advocating to get that new principal of Mitchell Grady Brady did I say that correctly thank you to our great district with Englewood is on the verge of ideally hiring somebody in her replacement Farragut where I've been a few times I campus 550 for kids right now 16 kids more than they had last year and I do want it affect Miss O'Brien and Miss Romero who are the cult leaders of the school in the opening you can read what what they're sharing their focus is for this school year and you can see them they're in the back they really are taking a leave and I couldn't be prouder I think we should image said how long how great they are and they aren't you know some of our finest teacher candidates Future Leaders in our school district and so I want to thank them and you see doctor K there and I've had a chance to a lot with dr. K and I really respect and admire him current enrollment you have 784 that's thirty-three over last year and obviously you see him there this is if you haven't been to that camp encourage anybody to make an appoint with Dr k it's it's just a very very beautiful diverse community and languages that you know I was a super 10 and a father of a dual dual immersion school and stood and I will tell you the first time I've ever been on campus for you up to and wow wow wow it is incredibly impressive I'm speechless and I feel like I'm learning so much as I walk into this classroom and I've been around a long time next line you have their El Rincon and two kids last year and of course you see that the focus are and I do you know I could take a little statement you got those USC shirts on but I still admire the staff and team they're for doing all that they're doing keep Rollin La by owner have to fully disclose the first time I used this word I did not see the hour somebody spelled it B valona and so you can imagine how I pronounce then I was corrected very quickly I'm not even say it out loud cuz somebody's going to play that over and over again about the current enrollment there's 553 about where they were last year I and a doctor got me doing a terrific job and had some time to walk with her this site and really get a good feel of what's happening there and I think of all the things I remember it's the school with the animal in the back of the yard. silver lion or tiger what is it fine thank you very much I don't know how I remember that alright Elementary to it's interesting to see that Monica high school and middle school together definitely a new experience for me and Rome it there's 1573 that's thirty-nine more than last year and you can see a doctor Williams there with our great students and I just have to say on that campus but I vividly remember is her just being very interactive with students ensuring that every kid had a hall pass one of my favorites and of course Campus of some facilities that definitely needs some improvement but eight sparkly clean a camping since I want to thank her and her entire team there and do the instructions I saw there really was a delightful experience that being said I love middle school high school rap dr. Thomas there and she has a kind of focus for the year for for the team their enrollment 21 I think it's his 1536 I always remind people high school always starts out a little higher and typically in any District at work in this is my seventh now you will see do you know what a bit of a drop typically High School be time you get to winter break and then sometimes moving to continuation alternative Ed and what have you really finding a great match for each and every child until one admirer the high school and the team they're really moving us forward and then I just wanted to hide a few other folks make sure we've included if they don't have an enrollment for last year and by the way the enrollment I think is still 25 26 I knew it cuz it was rolling a differently than the last time I did this light and so that program Miss curious here I will tell you what a beautiful experience I had at that site and getting to know the few students and I met there and obviously more students have enrolled since I was last there last week and then some non enrollment I believe I'm anticipating the next slide just some highlights of program Culver City adult school right now we joined us yesterday was dr. Long as she's the interim principal there we are advertising for that position and we will hopefully have somebody on board in that in the months ahead we're going along to Australia veltman a g that's what the focus of their is crackling and then the next line I just want everyone to know this is taking the Middle School course and I that I got permission to use this picture I'll leave it at that I won't mention names or anything and I do have a kind of funny staying about the USB thing but all that being said I think this is indicative of my goal is bend on kids kindness and I would stay until you think it's closing deals but I only put clothes in on there cuz I don't think people would understand what I meant so I really do want a size while I'm here I really wouldn't really really helpful that I'm working with the team that I am are so she and labor partners and I mean it sincerely I'm not just saying that but I don't I don't need to be here I like being here I appreciate the board and that leadership you have their lot of good things happening here but to set the table for the new person in we have to get things done we have to get a ring going in create this this kid Focus continues can focus a little more kindness on all of our part that's for us for me as a leader for us for a staff for kids learning it a little bit more and modeling it for our community and our parents I'm going to take that will go a long way in this committee and so with that I'm a very appreciative of I'm here and I want to have mr. Alarcon I just share some new hires that he can provide you a little more information about thank you doctor, I'm just following up with that we've had some new hires since the last board meeting of August 22nd who in a future meeting will be bringing them in to introduce them in a more elaborate way but beginning with that Deanna send failed Deanna will be on you as soon as our new assistant superintendent Sapa Sapa is for special education services for Santa monica-malibu Beverly Hills and Culver City Unified School District and Deanna joined us on September 1st next we have doctor Paul carrack the new principal at El Marino Elementary School and Dr K joined us on August 31st moving on to the assistant principal the new assistant principal at El Marino is Jennifer servant who also joined us on auto 31st I'm moving on mr. Reynolds is well-known to the Culver City Unified School District since he retired here from here in 2017 and Mister Reynolds is our interim assistant superintendent who began with us on August 31st welcome moving on to our new interim principal for the adult school Culver City Adult School is Barrett Maribel Galan and Mary call joined us on Monday September 11th to welcome Maribel moving on to somebody who happens to be here Alison Curry welcome is curry she's the new principal assistant principal of Clover Park High School and she joined us August 28th welcome next. Moving on to our newest assistant principal at Farragut Elementary is Patrice. And she'll be joining us tomorrow I'm over at Farragut Elementary so those those are some new administrators here City Unified School District and as I mentioned will be inviting them to a future board meeting where we will go ahead and provide more information about each and every one of them next I'd like to give a quick update on the sustainability the opposition of the sustainability position was authorized by the board last December the salary was approved also last December and February there was a ratification of the job description I will move to make that a full-time position we've been having some difficulty attracting applicants for that position or evaluating and unfortunately we only had one applicants were reposting and looking at that position and hopefully we'll find a person for that position and get a more robust applicant pool so that's an update for the certificate for the sustainability coordinator position thank you and that's how we you so much I am going to now it's my great pleasure to also welcome our new boss members I believe we have the new student board members from the high school it was my great honor to meet with them and to go over our board bylaws and discuss how to be prepared our meeting and I want to welcome at this time and I want to make sure I get it correctly so we'll see when do my nails right now so we have a Sofia Gomez and Emma Richie as Josh I want to invite them right now to do their board report or the high school but before we go there I'd like to briefly mention to our colleague if you have not read the student board member policies that encourage you to read the student board policy for our student board members which is number indeed sorry I meant I know that continued to disappear before me I'm going to have to look it up cuz I eat at the board has it at the city board members have the the number please let us let me know but the point that I'm trying to make it as I really encourage YouTube right here board members have all of the he's on a roll on such as the day shall be recognized at board meetings at school board members shall be seated with other members of the board allowed to cast preference boat on all matters may make motion that may be acted upon by the board invite the board to update the board policy to make sure that we include of Clover Park number and also in December the student board members can be appointed to subcommittee of course if they're available and they won important key thing is if they shall not be considered members of the legislative body so they are not do not need to follow the brown act and thank you so much and I would like to welcome our board members thank you I'm good evening everyone my name is amarachi AJ and I'm the new vice president of Culver City High School makes me one of the new student board members it's my pleasure to work with you all this year and I'm looking forward to it and bring a my peers that being said I do have a few things going on in the high school when being are welcome back assembly which will take place this month on the 20th and this is family is designed to look at my son's house on summer vacation and entry come into our new Eisman it's also designed to share any club information Sports APA and excetera we also have our Freshman Class council elections happening this week so any freshman and interested in for class president and vice president but it's happening this week we also have our annual closer on the 21st and this is a way for students to get accustomed to different clubs she will cuz are available how to join how to make a club and things like that we have our homecoming game on the 29th of this month and the halftime show will be hosted by we have our dance the following day on the 30th aside from that we have new plants native plants being planted in the sky and near the Robert Frost which began in July and we are emphasizing keeping the camp is safe clean and respectful and we have X planted near the bathrooms and cafeteria but I still be able to have our new center logo near the office be updated thank you I want to introduce myself I'm Sofia Gomez and I'm this year student board member at-large excited for this year and feel honored to year of school just began there isn't much to report soon as they're getting into the back-to-school habits along with adjusting to the new Wednesday schedule I'm also trying to spread the word about the QR code I have placed around school or drink students to Namaste give their feedback and concerns of a few are imported shared for Board of Education dr. Keller inspired by the way that he talks about and you can promoted in his PowerPoint cover this is last group of students I'm not there it was very disruptive when I was moved from Culver park it was like a divide-and-conquer situation and we closed it down for some time and he now the ACLU is here in 2012 and not how those facilities in the Bungalows were just in disarray and the kids are back in the Bungalow but you know what I'll take it because we're going to have this wonderful interim superintendent to guide us and please please have that board member I'm sitting next to you too because there's so much so much there at Clover Park so we're going to move to zoom now 3 speakers are Ron Levinson and Catherine Grasso and Eric Ruden mr. Levinson if you could admit yes I am Ron Levinson president to be District deal activity present of the target site Council and most importantly I'll touch upon a different agenda items as I raced through them the first one is 13.4 which is the r514 to dealing with safety burrito had mentioned to me that this was supposed to be voted on in the last meeting but was inadvertently not put on as an action item I'm just advocating its passage tonight so hopefully it is in the proper place then you will that that would be awesome likewise 13.5 vs Romo you which we've been going back and forth on for quite some time hopefully that one will be finalized and vote again tonight so that I wanted to discuss with some cleanup that are necessary in our absence and excuses board policy and they are they are predicated on two different Edco the first one for 60146 is 48205 and the reason this is important is because you got some conflation going on here that amounts to a substantial difference the former deals with participation and religious exercises 1 which is the AR 5113 deals with getting off a religious holiday and you have missed dated for a 205 Ed code cuz as it is amended as of first of this year it no longer requires written permission Advanced written permission by the parent or Guardian to be approved by a principal to take off for the holiday that needs to be cleaned up instead of being a sub number for it should be at Stoneman number so Advanced permission is not in fact needed by a parenting to be approved for taking off to the religious holiday thank you very much thank you Miss Grasso hi my name is Kathy Grasso I am the CT ftg high school and an environmental science teacher and I wanted to talk I believe it's 10.2 the budget items and the shortfall we are at 52% I just want to point out that we were at 58 I think a couple years ago standing in the classroom 54.99 52 I believe four out of five board members approved a budget that budget never should have been approved and from what I understand and I'm not sure that I understand this correctly we're trying to apply for hardship and that is not the case we are not in financial hardship we are in financial windfall we've had more money in this District the last three years than we've ever had it's not a hard shift it's Miss its expenditures happening that shouldn't be happening according to the state sometimes I feel like we come here and talk, Zola you talk a lot about the job of the board of the board real Community concerns and the staff concerns and we start this over and over and over and you're not hearing it well you got to hear it from the state it is not okay to spend 52% in the classroom it is not it is not because of financial hardship it's because of for new District level administrative positions and it's because during covid when multiple positions were added they were all outside of the classroom and none of those positions has ever ever been evaluated by anyone so we have a big problem here and I don't feel like we're being honest and no one's listening and the state is to find us because we shouldn't be at 52% expenditure in the classroom especially Culver City thank you the next three speakers are Eric Ruden Melissa Stuckey and Andrew lockman mr. Bruno yes it says it's unable to start my video I don't I don't think that video is enabled in general mr. rude and I think there have been some glitches is Eric Burdon once again and I would like to speak on items 9.3 I believe and 13.3 going to start with 13.3 we're fairly new to Culver City we moved here in 2018 in large part because of the schools and four are four year olds at who again you can probably hear in the background we're also a Jewish family we go to Temple around the block at 10 and I cannot understand for the life of me why Culver City Unified School District does not have Yom Kippur off while LAUSD Beverly Hills in Santa Monica do it's just unacceptable and on top of anti-Semitism is risen at a rave that we haven't seen since the tistic started to be counted and we're seeing it on the Culver City Unified School District School Board we have doctor from accustar handle referring to the creation the state of Israel as a catastrophe I'm all for criticizing the Israeli government but to refer to the one Jewish Nations creation is a catastrophe is absolutely anti-static add to 9.3 I just want to Echo what Mr long said we're greatly appreciative of all of the work of all of our classified credentialed admins School Board District administrators assistant superintendent sand in Iran superintendent mr. long I'm the president of the new Democratic Club here in Culver City Culver City Democrats United and I can assure you you will never you will never see anything anti-union especially about our schools we are very happy is it for your work you won't see any of that from us so I just wanted to make sure that that distinguishment is made and not levied against our club but you did not but I just don't want anyone to be confused thank you very much to all of you for your time play Stucky thank you thinking escaso again for bringing that up we've been at this for a long time 10.2 actuals how is it ccusd is 2.8% below the minimum classroom compensation for 2023 film was $3,000 that's below the 55% recorded which we all know now what is your serious search up free requested exemption CCSD bought brought in millions and state and federal funds grants and college funds over the last few years there's no reason this District should be in non-compliance returned reasons why and yes they are where in the audit is the money he owed to the state for ccusd not being in compliance for the day in the classroom three days missed for the pandemic in January 2020 to request an exam in which was denied then we were supposed to reapply for an exemption where what has become of this where is the transparency here I believe the cost is close to a million dollars so I was wondering where that went or how that went down but remember seen any of that being result 10.3 cover Park this is super important thank you for finally putting this on the agenda great it's on the agenda but there's nothing on the agenda regarding the topic is blank it would be nice to me what's going on what's going to be talked about even if it's simple outline thank you have a good night thank you mr. lockman sorry about that didn't hear that so sorry I can't be there in person I'm actually in Washington DC where I was invited to the vice president's residence for The Rush Hashanah holiday which is part of why I am here in testifying on item 13.3 particularly appreciated that they have tried to incorporate the state requirement around around what is going on around excuse absences but unfortunately what is missing from there is the understanding many in the Jewish Community had with respect that suspected excused absence policy which is that test will not be given on this day last time we were promised it would not be given and it happened anyway it is very important that this test that this policy clarified and that no major academic announcement and no test should be given and teachers should be instructed to take into account the nature the Holiday Inn making these decisions are for holidays that are important to in the Muslim Community and by the way my one of my colleagues in the Muslim Community has been trying to get on and not been able to get her hand she should be allowed to speak eat off a tear these are most important holidays as the head of the teachers union pointed out make everyone happy clear guidance and protect all of our voices it is necessary and equities and I implore you to please add this to our policy and Abby's clarification I also want to thank Seth rosenzweig for working to put calendar and explaining the importance of those holidays I have the chance of working with him on this and it should be a useful guide thank you and I hope that my colleagues from the Muslim American Community will be able to speak as well I'm going to pause to respond to that because I know Miss Raheem had raised their hand during the previous opportunity I don't see their hand now we me to kind of add you to the list mr. All Things do not hand me worth a check for $600,000 as a lump-sum I guess the company who's not certified doesn't have credentials not licensed staff at any of our children for the love of God Joe just be a guarded either when are Garth has Glenda there's no reason to have to Atalanta and Braddock it's ridiculous 10.5 Athens and excuses that's been discussed the calendar is again a joke at Smith's again one of the most useless employee so removing her would help the 52% thing without it showing what holidays are most important what holiday is kids will be absent why have a calendar and weird things on it but what's next 13.5 esro needs to be in full uniform there real job is to be a police officer so they need to be in uniform in case there's an emergency so needs to be in Estero in full uniform and to be honest with all the violence and all the problems their needs any random police checks with the dogs once in awhile go to the lockers let them sniff let's get the violence the guns. brought everything out of our school and of course the minimum I cannot believe that this District still cannot figure out how to do the minimum required for our students you claim to be so Pro moment to please remind our audience of board policy 9323 if a presentation includes charges of complain against any employee of the district including the superintendent regardless of whether or not the employees identified in any way the board will ask and at this time I'm going to our our cabinet our leaders District employee please provide a profit to the person I believe it was Miss Melissa Thompson Isaiah Thomas on that I also wanted to thank the city council for last night's decision board member of city council voted unanimously last to buy the gun store property just steps away from our love by own Elementary School it's one of those things where it where our students for Generations have been 878 steps away from a feet away from a gun store and then we heard stories from staff members who work there who is you know heard for years the concerns of students in the imaginings of students about something happening at the gun store something being purchased to the gun store and being used the school so this is a tremendous weight lifted off of of the students and the staff and the family shoulders so again thank you to the city council thank you very much to cover 878 who was one of the organizations that was leading that I know the right number of other organizations and and many families and parents who work for for quite a while to get that done so thank you to all of those people the real winners in this Earth are going to be our students. The visible ones and the invisible ones which there is a lot to take away from that and a lot to be learned so glad that these young people are learning this messaging and then last but not at all least and potentially the most important the the the team and the site or just doing incredible work around including our students with disabilities into ever educational space and we learned a lot about that today as visitors about how there are some some models that look like co-teaching there are some models that are otherwise inclusive but that every student is included in every educational setting no matter their needs or abilities and I was really pleased with all of that and I'll and that the the parent engagement in that communities credible and it's a testament to the doctor Hodges welcoming thank you alright thank you busy time since our last board meeting what I just want to say Happy back to school all the students families faculty in South I-25 just started my back to school so I need some trying to get back into that to the group of waking up but those really I feel that feeling with you myself and board member Guerrero and board member of the red-nosed had the opportunity to attend a bunch of birthday gift like somebody's we're at the high school we're at the adult now we're at Como Park and we got there yet for the first activities in later in the day also got to do visits with dr. increased Reliance on our existing District staff so need to go back to the drawing board to a certain degree with North they've indicated that there are Maynardville the present agreement is just a proposal it wasn't ever caught a fight into an actual agreement okay thank you for that clarification into a couple that new codification come before us at some point or will it just be in effect because it's a cleanup of the past I would imagine that would be taken to the board for approval just interested, that's what I would suggest going to take a little time but we agree that that is necessary then I will keep my comments on that short if you have a time to to discuss that later got a lot of opinions on it we heard a lot of that tonight we've been hearing that for a while I'm very appreciative to see that what is currently on the agenda tonight is a $600,000 contract rather than 1.5 million on again speaking for myself and my opinion what I saw last year didn't Merit movie map to that larger amount there's a lot of things that could have been brought up about our relationship with new Earth that are not to my liking I don't want to know that some of the concerns that it brought been brought up about there business model on the way they do their accounting are concerning to me I don't I don't love that they also operate a charter school that when we visited their facility have him soon to her formally enrolled a district that that's problematic to me I don't live the way that they deploy their Legal Services whether it's against members of the community or bring that up in conversations with the district that's dead they are providing a service to some of our students we got an estimate about 272 last year I would love to see those Services brought in house I don't think we're quite in the position to do that yet which is why I think that that $600,000 figure basically maintaining the level of services that we had last year for one more year why I can live with that one thing I do want to share with the community is that we prevented a couple of us visited their their site during the summer where they were running a summer program it with some of our students I think there's not as much burlap in their services as some of us as soon as his unfortunately typical went with some of the actions of the district the last couple of years communication was great on this and we kind of use the word counseling with a lowercase C when for the most part what they're providing is not Counseling Services it's more social work it's more coordination of wraparound Services they actually some fantastic work around job and career placement with students around housing assistance around food in security assistance I'm a lot of things that we do but not necessarily to the scale that they do and I think I'm 40 this has gone to find counseling issue which we got to make sure that the services they provide supplement our services rather than supplanting them and I'm very angry men about the concerns about Contracting out things that are owned could you but again I am appreciative of this kind of lower lower threshold her or in and maintaining the level to make sure students get the services they need it again those 272 student receive services and that's good and they're still around and they still no Services until we can bring them in the house I appreciate the clarification that this is an up to I appreciate hearing that we will be taking a look into the way that they do the building potentially bring that I'm further and and just want to add my own to sense that I think it is important that we looked at building up our own capacity over the next year so that at the end of this year we can provide these services for our students without her contract out to another agency but all of my colleagues who worked on this end and you know within the limits of the brown act up here and and with my partner on this issue had some discussions and really kind of come to an understanding of what they do provide in the end and understanding that bringing it down to this level as the right thing to do moving I do and I attended a visit to a middle school in St Louis wear these wraparound Services were part of the school so they can become part of the school and we have to do and we must continue to think about our most vulnerable students are low-income students we must continue to think about our students who live in the house are students who live in Foster we have to think that this person was brought here because it was part of our comprehensive safety plan because our students who were getting involved in altercation did they provide diapers for running again through grants I want to tell our labor Partners I'm grateful for the time that you gave us it is not my intention it has never been the intention of the board that put it on this pretty place to supplement to to duplicate sorry about the efforts by our counselors are teachers our staff and that is in that we need to do a lot of work to get there and it's possible and we saw that in st. Louis with Judy service but it's going to take some time and I'm looking forward to ensuring that we can provide the services that are so needed in the future and I'm so happy and grateful.
