Healthy Kids Survey

What is the California Healthy Kids Survey?
The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is the largest statewide survey of resilienc, protective factors, and risk behaviors in the nation.  Across California, the CHKS has led to a better understanding of the relationship between students' health behaviors and academic performance, and is frequently cited by state policymakers and the media as a critical component of school improvement efforts to guide the development of more effective health, prevention, and youth development programs. It is focused on the five important areas for guiding school and student improvement:
  • Student connectedness, learning engagement/motivation, and attendance;
  • School climate, culture, and conditions;
  • School safety, including violence perpetration and victimization/bullying;
  • Physical and mental well-being and social-emotional learning; and
  • Student supports, including resiliency-promoting developmental factors (caring relationships, high expectations, and meaningful participation).
