now there isn't welcome to the Clover City school board meeting on September 13th may I get them listen to move the clothes eschen yes I will thank you so much you later see you we ready to get started yes I think so great thank you good evening everyone welcome to the Culver City school board meeting on September 13th 2020 my name is Paola Missoula and I am resigning as a b legend of the school board president Levin is unavailable today and I will be sharing this meeting I would like to call this meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. I'm sorry 6:01 p.m. and before there are three board members present which establishes a quorum and I would like to ask my board members cabinet and staff to please mute there soon microphones if you are on zoom and for those who are a person of color board members when you move a motion or you second emotion please state your name so that we can take proper notes so I would like to we have made no no actions were taken in closed session and I would like to ask if anybody would like to volunteer to the the doctor can't see if it's possible maybe someone there in person would like to volunteer we have a volunteer from cabinet dr. Smith will lead us in the flat thank you so much I do want to mention for us who are on Zoom we were not able to hear the flag salute so I'm not sure if the microphones are working for for us on Zoom can you hear now Paula I think it's because no one was speaking into the microphone for the pledge thank you so much Okay so I am going to move to 3.3 the land acknowledgement as we begin our board meeting we acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory in her land of the Gabrielino tongue by people who lived on and cultivated the land for thousands of years the words on the means people of the Earth today we will review a job description from sustainability coordinator agenda 10.4 this individual ones higher will help us coordinate our District's efforts to protect our Earth and I want to take the up Unity to the to do the land acknowledgement and encourage our district to take the critical step towards working with Native communities to secure meaningful Partnerships and inclusion in the stewardship and protection of their cultural traditions and homelands let's take a moment to also honor these ancestral grounds that are collectively gathered upon and support the resilience and strength are all native peoples have shown worldwide I also want to send special things to the Bri Bri the indigenous group in Costa Rica where I'm joining you from their name means Gente Valiente their isolation from society allows them retained their culture ethnicity and religion and to live a sustainable life in Costa Rica I hope ccusd can honor the land and move towards a laco it's an open PTO for you to yell framework training is for $28,000 and I wanted to ask the arrangement that we made recently legal in order to support our work and getting closer to a full inclusion of our students with disabilities yes good evening and thank you for the opportunity to elaborate but I can't this is part of our our plan or strengthening of the port for inclusion 2.0 got some consultant that work for me with another company they have boots on the ground relationship drinking it with laco as well as the three conclusions facilitators who also served as Mentor that's part of our comprehensive plan to support including great thank you so much for that yeah I wanted to bring it up because it's it look just looks a little bit different and I thought it would be important to pull it off and highlight it for community looks a little bit different than we can handle the arrangements before the history here has been that when we work when we work agreements with third parties on behalf of our efforts toward inclusion and very highly scrutinized under microscope and in a manner that probably in the end was really wonderful for the community to have these discussions around but it is just tremendously different than this man where were approving a relationship with a third-party for efforts that are under a similar guys and and about implementing the board approved vision of getting toward full inclusion in I just wanted to pull it out shine a little light on it be transparent about why it's being moved forward in a manner that so different than our president in terms of X for external support in this area so we're all really excited about this work and feel your heart so I want to be clear that my support is all corroded and just wanted to make sure that the community knows that there's a difference in the way that we're approving the third-party relationships because something I don't know if it's the kind of organization or what I'm not quite sure but I just want to be clear that in the past has been profoundly different so I guess in there is one question is there's no contract associated with this PO we're in the past we've approved a contract will a contract come forward or is there a reason that there's no contract to be flipping a contract will come forward working its way through the bureaucracy of LA County Office of Ed so yes we do okay well I might I might do the same maneuver at that time to have to be sure that were feeling as transparent as possible I just am in full transparency just to add the peace because it is our new bed there's been support group provide outside of the contract already with one of our elementary schools observation PD tomorrow observation in the morning so they're already doing work if they can under the auspices of the County Office of Ed ratified contract if if I could just take the lead basically saying that the next time we bring the contract and it will be a stand-alone item for public conversations I'm bored question we would not put it under consent okay I really appreciate that I wanted to make sure that we had a conversation in front of the community about it and I'm ready to move forward unless her other any other public comment remember McBride nothing Q okay so can we get a boat please I think you moving to 8.1 public recognition guidelines I'm so done with all that we do have two comments there right now on items that are on the agenda and I'll take the opportunity to let the audience know that now what's the time for you to put in comments for items that are not on the agenda and you can do so by bringing an orange card up to Miss Williams at the front of the room in person or raising your hand if you're on them thank you so much okay so are there any public comments on items not on the agenda at this time we have one person Joanns nazare I would probably really really hard to hear inside the room like summer and Kelly I can hear Paula fine it's very tiny and I can't hear inside them in the room sorry we're waiting for our technical support Mr Man to maybe give us a nod Improvement you know anything about it Zoo Marion it's for mg Bond sorry just had to I Meet myself and Marcy Bond and I'm actually commenting because I didn't see this on the on the agenda but I was concerned about October 5th Yom Kippur and the fact that on October 4th even though I'm not Jewish we do have at least two members of two candidates who are running for running for school board and what is the day for training and it starts at 5 p.m. and Yom Kippur start I believe starts at 6 p.m. which is when the Sun goes down and continues through October 5th and next sundown and I think that this is very disrespectful and it's something that I think most Christians would be okay if we were doing this type of thing on on Christmas or on Easter as well as holding anything you're on Ramadan I think we need to look at this sudden and reconsider what we're doing on Yom Kippur there something like 30 events being held and and that means that any of the families for the kids that are to wish are going to have a hard time because this is their highest of holy days so that is that was my comments thank you thank you so much anyone else on online or in person that would like to do public comment an item Wyndham there are no other cards that have been turned in and I if I'm a mess I'm a zoologist and it as a reminder because different people, two different meetings the board is not able to engage with comments on items that are not agenda but staff does take note and will get back to you if they are able in order to answer questions thank you okay three ccusd employee groups have public coming from from our partners can we start who is online or in person I see Debbie Cami would you like to start I'd be happy to thank you this is a Missoula other things I'd like to discuss this evening and where we are with our custodial issues we still don't have adequate custodian staff and we still don't have any substitute last week one of our staff had to call out sick there was no substitute to fill in for him so when I arrive jobs at work at 7:30 in the morning the school had not been open to the school had not been cleaned nobody was there on Sat no custodian was present when I called the only thing they told me was we have no substitutes I thought that we were hiring with an outside agency to provide custodial staff especially when there were no substitutes I asked the administrative assistant at mot to ask Mike if we can get somebody from the outside agency he told me that he would have to get permission from Robert and then I never heard that and we were never sent to anybody so here I was starting back during the morning but didn't have toilet paper and nobody thought to find a substitute for us when our only custodian was out the same thing happened this week we had no custodial sub we couldn't get one until 11 in the morning our assistant principal was doing custodial work during lunch which is unexcusable I'd like to know what it is that we are doing to solve this problem that we've been dealing with for at least 2 years now this has got to change we have a custodial supervisor and we have a director of Mo. parents in the community that are complaining about the bathrooms and the sites not being cleaned this is the reason why we don't have anybody to do it and to tell a school secretary that there are no subs and expect us to accept that and figure out what we're going to do on our own is inexcusable the other thing that I'd like to talk about is the fact that we have an election cycle going on for school board and I'm going to say and I wish that we can all be adults during this election. I think that it is shocking that we have people telephone serve on the board they're spreading things in the background behind the scene about other people that are running for election this is unbelievable everybody who's running should be able to express their focus their vision for this disc and the voters should be allowed to vote for those people based on where they stand on the issues and what they think the problems are in the school district that needs to be fixed this behind-the-scenes High School behave we're certain people are trying to do or use undue influence to make sure that people don't get voted for is absolutely childish and immature and has to stop people are all talking about how dirty this campaign is be coming out this election. Is is falling into place and we have to do something as a community to stop that I am tired of well I don't know who needed me so I guess that I have to repeat everything that I said about this recycle we have people running for office that should be allowed to run for office based on the issues that they find important in this district there is no reason why anyone else in shooting other members of this board should go behind the scenes and try to discredit are fellow board members or any other chanted in this race this is high school immature behavior that is unacceptable I am already hearing rumors about these behind-the-scenes backstabbing thing I've been through this myself once before in the community when we were dealt with an El Marino adjunct issue 10 years ago comfortable horrible place to be and we need to be grown-up about this and run on the issues and not try to use undue influence do you make sure that we get the results we want another election I have to say thank you thank you are there part labor partners mystery I want to make sure you're ready for okay so how could even everyone's so a few things that I want to touch on tonight I actually want to open up with facilities ESO District facilities are really in a state of repair you know earlier at the end of last year we had Plumbing issues at Culver City High School we had a pipe break at La Ballona Elementary just this past weekend we had another flooding situation at Lynn Hale Elementary we had part of a roof cave-in at the high school in the New Media Center from the rain on our facilities are in disrepair our fields are in disrepair I just got you know I'm an email from one of our he coaches about the terrible condition the softball and baseball fields are and I was talking to our athletic director about the horrible shape the Middle School field is in as well too and we really really need to start focusing on our facilities and doing what we can for facilities give her a lot of talk around you about things for supper like a fordable housing or Workforce housing which is a great idea that's what our staff wants but to me our number one priority has to be our facilities because our facilities are falling apart while many of our schools were you know built in the 1950s and and haven't had much updates and I can tell you I was actually out just this past week in addition to the high school I went out to the middle school and to love Iona on visits and they they are falling apart so I really would like to board to address the issue with the Scylla is figuring out what's going to be our long-term solution with that I'll take a look at that Bond measures thing to look at collaborating with the city I'm on something because we have to do something we can't you just have these incidents meaning of like I said roofs kind of caving in from water and a spiked up pipes bursting I should say and you know affecting our students over at Lin Howe Elementary so I really want to see the district make a big big focus on our facilities is there are at least two administrative positions on that the board is going to discuss tonight I'm in addition to one that was posted on edjoin do you want to say that none of these positions have been taken to the partnership yet I personally think we shouldn't even be discussing these until they've gone to the partnership first for a thorough discussion so I'm a little disappointed pointed that I see that on there that I saw one posted on edjoin when none of these have come through our labor-management partnership I'm not going to favor any new edition administrative positions in this District until we can take care of the employees that we have in this District now including some of the current administrators as well you're getting them the kind of support they need but most importantly especially when we're Debbie talking about custodial issue that we're still dealing with we have a shortage of aides at a lot of our sites right now including TK age where we need them to stay in compliance we have a shortage of ela important what we pay Who Wants to Be an aid for $18 an hour let's face it who wants to be an aid for $18 an hour at 3.9 or 6 hours so I feel we talkin about adding six-figure administrative let's get the rest of our house in order and let's take care of our classified staff let's get AIDS which in turn helps our certificated staff we shouldn't have assistant principals restocking bathrooms we shouldn't have secretaries restocking bathrooms we shouldn't have teachers having to clean their own classrooms so let's take care of our own house first and let's make sure that we're paying people a fair wage especially our class B that kind of staying on the theme of copper station of definitely happy you know that we've been through for teachers and compensation of the benefits that we've been working on with the district I really want to give a lot of carbon credits of Robert with Ino aggressively trying to increase benefits in District because as you know Healthcare cost for the thing that always skyrockets and I really commend the district for doing that and it's helped us move into that share compensation goal when you combine salary and benefits together into the top 10 are we do have a long way to go though in salary if we're talking about just in terms of salary which I mean unfortunately with a lot of people look at first they want to see what you're paying and we're definitely still behind and salary so I'm hoping with a lot of this additional money that we really go hard after salary in this district and that's how we're going to retain staff we really go hard after benefits in this District because that's how we're going to retain staff we change policies in this District to give our employees nro CD program we change policies in this District to make sure all of our employees get permit for those who can afford live in Culver City that's how we're going to retain staff okay that's what staff wants and I wouldn't current members of the board and administration to talk to their employees because that's what they're asking for right now they're not asking for additional administrative positions right now not asking for Workforce housing this is what they're asking for we also need to work with the city we can't be in this alone and I'm definitely current slip talk to I think almost all the board members and I think everyone is on board with this with the c eating to contribute more money to the district Santa Monica gives over 10 million dollars annually there's no reason Culver City can't do that as well and I know that every board member here tonight and Steve as well I think I talk to every one of you about it and I applaud you definitely supporting all that measure I've talked to for the five city councilman two are certainly on board with this one's a little lukewarm and I'll say one was kind of hostile for the idea of helping out the school district we need to change those attitudes as well finally that they would say something quickly about the election to but I want to talk about CTE welcome I know we have a new CTE coordinator that's going to be order fruit tonight's I want to welcome our new coordinator as well and really get to work on our CTE program and making sure that we have programs that students once we create Pathways that are Stu are looking for so about two weeks ago on we lost a teacher a long time high school teacher mr. Mike Brant mr. Mike Brant ran the auto shop at Culver City High School for I'm going to say 20 or more years to start leaving before I came in at a Mike Mike was it was a true treasure is a pleasure to work with a students enjoyed working with him and learning autostop and learning those kind of skills we need to try to go back to a lot of programs like that programs that students are interested in programs like Mike ran and get some interest of our kids in these career pathways that's what makes sense and again you know we definitely mourn the loss of Mr Brad just a great teacher for Culver City High School for many many years finally just what Debbie said with the election to I'm a delegate for the AFL-CIO I was a little surprised when you know what the chairperson had talked about you know how contentious our races so had message is even getting to AFL CIO and things like that so you don't keep it fair I would agree with Debbie in that way with keeping the elections Fair Anchorage any teachers on the call to please our social media Culver City Federation of teachers on Facebook ccft 1343 on Twitter and Culver City Federation of teachers on YouTube thank you thank you so much and moving on to 8.4 superintendent's report superintendent cabinet if you all want to respond to anything that was mentioned in public comment or buyer labor Partners would greatly appreciate any response to their questions and or information you may have under the topics thank you vice president Amezola if I may just start tonight's conversation with the board on Thursday September 15th Culver City Unified School District will be in joining Culver City for a conversation with a community dr. David Lee the mayor of Culver City will be presenting his annual stop the city and we will be joining him with some of the conversation on our own diversity Equity as well as sustainability the conversation would take place in person at the Culver City Middle School school cafeteria from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and it is even though on the website it is stated that the tickets are available you are not required to have a ticket to attend so it is open until listen to all members of the public and more information just flocking to the to the city website and then you get all the information there I like to hear the rest of the time to my colleagues and then I hope to catch a few minutes at the end of of my report so dr. Angela Baxter internet services we're offering all schools cancel the full day of training with their teams dr. Larson and his colleagues have developed a meaningful and robust process the teacher School site Council teams to analyze data aligned expenditures and budget accordingly today El Rincon Farragut and Linwood how were in attendance and on Thursday see Culver City Middle School in Culver City High School as well as lullaby on his teams will be in attendance on September 6th and I met with concern. about high school English we invite parents to return in October for our town hall in the interim we are meeting with the English teachers to continue our support for their work additionally The English Department is registering for the pre-ap training on November 8th I'd like to provide a preliminary report of the 2122 California assessment of student progress performance and progress the cast for yourself and data for perspective in 2021 60 2% of our students district-wide met or exceeded the standard in English language art 2122 data indicate 63% of students met or exceeded the standard district-wide in 2021 52% met or exceeded the standard in math whereas in 21 22 50% of the students met or exceeded the standard in math again the status preliminary but it gives us a bit of force and lets you know about the Deep analysis that we are going to undertake to review by level and student group our data so next week we're having conversations that are aligned to the cast in around assessment and data. which grade level in order to support and plan for instruction as well as supporting in a benchmark assessment may I ask a follow-up question if I Missoula weather report absolutely no discussion no please I'm wondering I think you said it and I missed it it will come back so you're doing great at diets at sites and with PL he isn't on until 4 and then after that work there will be a board level presentation or something of the student groups with the boy and do you happen to have that's the one that is Arno traditionally it is because local entertainers have to be approved and then see to it he has to approve them last year it was in December but me a text to it we could break down to print station to the board into parts we could do a preliminary portion part 1 addressing the data as we break him down on the dashboard test on the academic pieces and then later on in December when the when the approved a local indicators are approved by the state we can come back and share part 2 so I'm hoping that we can trigger that hopefully in the month of October if not sooner if I may support for that October presentation because since so money headlines are already out about student data I know the community is kind of clamoring to hear more it be great if we could have some I'm more into my understanding to go to them with and also have the conversation public thank you we will focus on them if I may invite dr. Smith to share some of report to the board thank you mr. Tran as we continue our rollout of inclusion 2.0 I want to reiterate that tomorrow principal Chipola is having the Lego and collision Specialists work with teachers in the afternoon during staff development time as a follow-up to an observation made last also tomorrow in the a.m. after Senate Farragut elementary school has invited the inclusion specialist in from laco to observe great level classrooms a comprehensive plan and follow-up PD we are at the next meeting will be bringing forward the resolution for the National Suicide awareness prevention month along with an invitation for the entire Community to join us at October the second out of the darkness walk to celebrate and acknowledge the continuing challenges we have with mental health in our community so more to follow thank you and if it's the queen will take the next few minutes sure if I can just give a quick update on that Lynn house letting that we were talking about just to be clear and while I completely agree that we need a lot of money go into our facilities are especially our infrastructure this particular issue was caused by a simple water feed line underneath the sink and all those flexible metal ones that have been crimped it burst over the weekend and because it happened over the weekend the class filled with water before anybody found it I do want to acknowledge the wonderful work that especially the Lynn how crew did a principal chabolla his teachers his staff jumped on this really really quickly and a very calm manner they got the teachers reorganized and put into separate classrooms where they were able to teach their classes for the day they manage the students in a very calm matter who actually were just kind of enjoying the change of pace it seems like from what I was and over there but we got them all placed in classrooms are almost entire mot Department was out there cleaning up water cleaning up pools of water and getting rid of all the initial trash and come down so I really want to thank all of them it popped over and then outside Restoration company was on site within just a few hours looking at what the long-term solution is and what we're going to have to do based on when this very similar thing happened at another school I would hesitantly estimate for 28 weeks I think it'll be shorter than the last one because we were able to get started on it so quickly and everybody knew what to do right from the start so we'll keep an eye on that will keep an eye on the students there in the temporary classrooms make sure and their teachers are doing okay and have everything they need to continue their education but we'll keep everybody updated on that as we progressed thank you if I could just take a couple of minutes to share the the plan for restoring the instructional environment of our then how classroom for of the upstairs classrooms where the pipe burst play the forward downstairs classroom so Michigan had thought that maybe we should focus on just all pull out all the stops and fix the top for classroom first and it says we can restore those for we could begin to restore some instructional program back onto the top floor for classroom and then as we addressing the the bottom for classroom which suffered the most damage because of water float right through and destroyed the ceilings and accumulate on the carpet down below so there's this great deal of effort trying to maximize the effort that we have with our outside contractors as well as a son and a big thank you to all of the staff who came to from Eminem and nit to support. restore the instructional bits and pieces of our students and our staff at the moment of notice from the point of I believe 7:05 in the morning when we first got the information until I guess 8:15 in the morning we managed to find replacement places our location and and to the credit of our staff and our leaders at the school side principal Chihuahua we managed to resort to some degree for the rest of the day for all students so I truly appreciate this this is something to illustrate that when we have our full support in the training while staff out of custodial staff are really outstanding people and they done a tremendous amount of work I do want to have now HD concerned that brought up by by our leaders of a a c e t c ft we will diligently working on improving the instructional as well as a compensation for our staff and I will the embassy said we do look for addressing Staffing compensation in addition to other needs such as facility repairs and modernization as well as one of the greatest impediment to maintaining long-term office housing so there is a an opportunity for us to within the next Manchester next month the next week but the next four years and we could have Ark on addressing all those three big pieces facility Staffing sing as well as compensation for our people some more information before coming to the board and last but not least I just want to express my appreciation for the board's Support over the course of the beginning of the opening of the school we were able to monitor in go back one of the last piece of restrictions on covid-19 the test cases are seem to be decreasing and so at this point the least restrictive the we could I'm still maintaining the safety of our community is in place with covid-19 I should hit the numbers going the wrong direction we would inform the board in the community ASAP we will achieve the restoration some normalcy but not at the expense of increase danger to all staff and students thank you I am requesting permission for another follow-up question but they're Missoula and when you were talking about the repairs I don't again I want to download I may have missed it but I know that in communicating with the board which you all were doing immediately and then frequently throughout the time that the incident happened at Lynn house with thank you so much for that you meant that you thought that you might decide to replace all of those equivalent fixtures or something is that still the plan replace every single one of them no matter how old they are just to make sure it's really just looking to make sure none of none of them been crimped in a way they're not supposed to be current but go ahead and replace them while we're at it there isn't any indication of error on our part or function in the not that I could see you and I was there right when it happened it was just bent in an unnatural way but the thing was there was nothing up against it that should have been making it happen so I'm not real clear on how it happened hopefully then team invest be able to figure out more than I have mr. Tran will that be the end of your Sprint ends report thank you okay we're ready for student representative reports my sure if they're online or in person please colleagues please help me determine yes we do have students present mic we have two I only saw one before and now they've doubled there are two student Representatives present in the room and I don't I'm not aware of any online so if either of you are please alert me and start with the Middle School oh I'm sorry to high school Representatives President and Vice President I had to give just like the overall High School report from ASP and everything so the first few weeks have gone well we've had two very successful football game we also had orientation assemblies on August 31st and September 7th please went really well I definitely feel school spirit has increased from these past couple of years we also had a club for today we had about 60 clubs and load the students attended it was overall just really great and she's also beginning to find a homecoming game tailgate and dance a couple of vents look forward to the talent show covert Ops and addicting game currently only two are working which was really bad especially in this like heat wave that we're going through but overall everything's looking good and I'm looking forward to what's ahead thank you anyone for Middle School online or in person or another report okay I apologize one student and speaking on behalf of the high school no no Middle School the middle school today okay thank you so much okay so we will start with our board members can we start with Miss McBride I just had a short report I just want to thank a teacher staff and fed up men for surgery and visiting back to school night for elementary school we have a series of back-to-school days and I had attended my son's 3rd grade back to school day and it was kind of cool to just be there in the morning and get to Klosterman what's happening it's nice to be back on campus and I think Middle School back to school night is tomorrow and high school is on the 28th and I'm looking forward to those as well and I appreciate the response about the updates that we received about how I did go over and do a walk-through with Mr tobola and was able to see the classrooms and it was unfortunately like deja vu when I walk through love Iona and I saw many of the same things and it made me wonder if we can agendize a discussion at some point in the future where there can be sort of like an update cuz I know that the last time we did A needs assessment and our district was before the bond and I saw the hose and you're right it's like the thickness of of a marker so who knows if things are pushed up against it but I think if we could maybe have schedules where those things are text like twice a year or something that might be helpful and also as we start to prepare for there are dollars that come in for Capital Improvement will know exactly what we need because I think I don't know Robert last needs assessment was 2000 but there was a needs assessment done as part of the master facilities master plan a few years ago talk to you about a date not sure I did it right so obviously the discussion around Master facility schedule just to see what's the relevant and what we need to prioritize because we can't I don't believe that we can move forward with anything unless we prioritize our greatest needs though I would love to request and I'm looking for nodding heads from board members thank you that's in my report thank you thank you can I get a report from dr. Kent sure thank you Miss on Missoula I if I may forgive me open for just putting on a could we just come in on the students report about water fountains do you swear you aware and then can it be remedied every time I ask so I just messaged several people inside what the heck going on please let me know right away so we'll take care of it thank you for reporting on your experience at the high school we we do appreciate that okay I don't have a big report either and and folks are spoken to other things I was going to highlight already so rather than repeating I'll simply offer that we had a visit from a sister city delegation recently from Ooltewah upon Mexico and Michoacan the state of Michigan and they are a special set of visitors for me because when I was president of the school board I was able to be a delegate and travel with the folks from Culver City that went to act in the spirit of Destroyer City down to Michoacan is it with them and then I was able to spend some time with them when they return the visit us and they came over the time of fiesta love Iona which I think many of you all were at II so many of you there and so they were able to really enjoy some of the most Culver City of what we do just just a sentence or two about what sister cities are it's just a effort to create Global relationships based on cultural education general information and trade exchanges and so one of the conversations we hope to be able to have soon again with woodwop on is having students exchange and they're all sorts of things that factor into that including political climates and safety of course and so when those exchanges are available really depends on any number of doctors but we're in communication and we're excited about the possibilities and the visit from the roof on delegation was a tremendous and have fun and the mayor's between Ooltewah pain and Culver City are now in close communication and are talking about collaboration across borders about things most notably climate and how that impacts our various economies and so on and so forth and it was it was a really beautiful experience that I appreciate it being able to participate in as a host for the for my gratitude for them hosting us past and Beyond. I am I'm just checking if I had another question regarding comments and I think they've all been spoken to so thank you thank you how much and I think I also met with a delegation from dropping my truck on for those who don't know I attended elementary school they're my parents immigrated during those six years back and forth between Mexico rub on your truck on and hear the United States and so we had a chance to reminisce and also talked about all the growth of the city of Little Rock on and along with Miss McBride I would also like to thank all the schools in everything they are doing to support our community from I apologize I did not have my video on supporting Ark unity and ensuring that parent-teacher staff can build community within our schools I attended love Iona principal Coffee Day when school started and it was so gratifying to see the vast number of parents who attended from different backgrounds speaking differ languages and I really I'm grateful for our schools doing everything we can to build those communities that we so desperately need after the pain. and also to build our social skills to socialize and be in community and I also want to mention as you might have seen on the agenda I'm currently a broad and I'm working on a special project out of the country and the next two meetings I will be joining the exhume well I'm out of the country and last thing I think that will be it for me and thank you so much I will be moving on to agenda item I'm moving to our agenda items at 10 .1 which is actually a 10.2 unaudited actuals is that Mr Quinn has officially I didn't see Reeses on my notes I apologize would you like us to recess anyone I'm that bored or cabinet I think if we could just have a small one miss Amezola I would be grateful thank you okay it's 7:55 can we come back by 8 thank you thank you thank you so much it will continue 10.2 unaudited actuals thank you Miss in Missoula we're presenting the 21 22 on audited actual is budget report for this year as a reminder the unaudited actuals is probably the least interesting report of the year because all we're doing is reporting on what the budget look like at the end of the year there's no decisions there's no choices there's nothing to decide on with this one it's just hey here's how we did and matching up our projected budget to what it actually turned out to be at the end of July excuse me at the end of June these are the general fund numbers that we kind of look at for the most important thing to see what change from our last estimation the last estimated budget was in May and may revise so at that time you can see what the revenues expenditures and then the effects on those are the things that affect those are below it and how things turned out in the unaudited actual is on the right you can see that our Revenue went up just a little bit a little over a million dollars our expenditures and this is the one that mr. Kearney always asked me to point out because he was so impressed by this with an estimation of 97.49 million and we ended up at 97.45 it's just a incredible accurate estimation on their part so they did a really good job transfers out and transfers in there's obviously how things change to affect the budget and I'm going to get to the reasons for those items to explain them on the next slide any kind of look at the bottom line net increase in our fund balance is really saying whether we had a deficit or Surplus at the end of the year and you can see both restricted and unrestricted and the total change were both positive 1.2 million dollars we had a surplus on our budget for 2122 of 1.2 million obviously better than some of the flight decreases we've had in previous years so the reason for changes since the last estimated Budget on the revenue side Lottery funds went up a little bit higher I think part of that was because we had so many big lotteries over the past year special ed funding went up just a little bit and then some of the a through G access Grand Haven state revenue expenditure has really came in line as you saw there's nothing to report there on the change the good news items there are transfers out this is where the general fund has to put money into other funds such as capital Oro CD to support them when they running when they're running deficits and the amount that we projected we were going to have to give them went down from about $725,000 down to about $250,000 to dollars really good news on both of their part and then transfer in our Redevelopment money was considerably more than expected we usually has to make that is about 1.4 million dollars and this year it came in at a little over 2.1 million dollars there was a lot of them Redevelopment money coming in from the city higher-than-expected and then the last thing is just looking forward what is our budget look like in 22 23 as we start to work on that they're too big effect on the budget that we've already obviously brought to the board for approval the salary increase and benefit medical benefit increase that went into effect on July 1st of this year as mr. long mentioned medical insurance cap is where we really trying to focus and get that up to where we're actually covering a decent percentage of the cost of our medical expense for our staff the 5% increase was a good opportunity to get that increased also we haven't been able to do an increase like that in quite some years and then we're also looking at just continuing some of our additional temporary staff and we started with one-time funds and because we have additional one-time funds coming in will be able to continue some of those and then there's no additional one-time funds coming in there the grass we talked about before one of them is the Arts music and instructional materials Grant there's a learning recovery grants and then they gave us more money on the elop the expanded learning opportunities program through all those one-time funds that I mentioned in previous meetings will go towards giving us further opportunities next year and that's all I had to share other supposed to be a slide that says questions but if there are any questions I'd be happy to take those now thank you so much can we first I apologize for getting do we start with any audience if the audience any public comment is that where we start I usually we do and there are no cards on this item and I do not see Henry's hands raised on this item okay great and okay so colleagues is McBride would you like to start you have any comments on this item is right now great thank you so much for the present and I do be sure that our gratitude is expended to mr. Carney and his team I agree it's pretty impressive every year I have a very small done in the past have talked about and I and I want to acknowledge I know we have a lot of priorities right now so with that as the disclaimer I went in the past the board has talked about using Lottery funds as an opportunity to practice the idea of participatory budgeting just explore it and so I just wanted to bring it up again because it's a relatively small amount of money that's a relatively unrestricted and the idea of participatory budgeting is something that the city has expressed for although I'm not entirely sure where they've been cemented it either so I just wanted to re-up on the on the interest and if there is a means to explain that in the near future yeah I actually sit on the finance advisory committee for the city so we so as part of that committee they had a presentation on that whole process and he was late last fiscal year and it is a really interesting process so yeah we're trying to jump on that same my colleagues the student board members do you have any comments on this item I do need to add one thing done sorry I'm sitting board members you have any comments or questions if I may take this opportunity to ask board members to share something with the public and the thank you for checking in with them about their preferential opinion and their votes and I checked in with them with their regarding their ability to from their constituents who course those are their students colleagues classmates and I was hoping that you would both share with the public how you're doing that this year so as vice president charge of House of Representatives it hasn't started this year but I'm hoping to get it up and running within the next two weeks but how's it going presented as is basically a monthly meeting during second period will I where I meet from an alleged student from each second. And I give them update that what's going on around school as well as give them a chance to give student feedback so because I'm just didn't remember ministers don't really know about it so I will be having a town hall club with friends are welcome to come and just talk to me about anything you just said ideas they believe can be like talk on board meetings it will be only be twice a month just like the board meetings normally Tuesday. thank you for the update I can since I couldn't see your faces can I hear your name can you introduce yourself yeah hi I'm Alissa Daggett the vice president things I ever remember okay thank you so much okay this is information I can we don't need to Bow template 3 moving to 10.308 Mr Quinn you said you had something else you needed to add College Al's ideas who is r just physical director who is just a superstar working behind the scenes also covers our purchasing department since we lost that director while back she was here and meeting or two ago at being acknowledged as the max employee of the year and you can probably see where this is going has taken a job as a director of fiscal services at a bigger School District than us and will be leaving us at the end of this month both professionally and personally that's heartbreaking she's the sweetest person in the world and just am a sing at her job so she's going to be difficult to replace but I've been giving her a huge congratulations and it's just really good for her to be taking this stuff that is a big lost well congratulations and please extend our gratitude and we'll reach out as well thank you so much for updating us and it's always with a full heart when I hear someone that's been promoted and moved on to another next goal in life and in their profession and so I'm always always feels my heart and at the same time I hope that this position gets big quickly so that our expenditures continue to have great great estevez's we seen today okay move on to 10.35% for inclusion facilitator we are friends. may I said continue thank you before I started with short discussion on 10.3 or presentation I just want to make mention that traditionally we take additional action item to the board one time for the board to question to ask questions and I mean to to ask what context and then would take action on it I have since then decided that perhaps it's better for the discourse of the public comment that we would take new position proposal for a new position to the board as first and information item and then taking input an addition to to the board information item will take it back to 2 to partnership for input and to relevant in terms of lining up all of our resources are funding and so on so forth and then we take the item back the board for an action item probably later on during the month so this way with Ashley would have more opportunity for input and contacts from all of our stakeholders within the community so this would look somewhat unusual but it is the first, say and that's an information item and on 10.3 we asking for the board to look at the job description and then ask us questions so that we can do some clarification it is a an ongoing process starting I believe last year looking at way to support the mentoring aspect as well as the ongoing expertise within the school district for inclusion and the recommendation came from multiple conversation about putting in play inclusion facilitated on this point on the floor to dr. meth to address some of the key duties and responsibilities of this new position thank you much and I'm going to yield the time to a special ed director dr. Diana Fannin I needed my apologies so I wasn't already tonight but but hope hopefully you'll forgive me we are really excited about I'm big now sorry about this position at something that we discussed at the at the prior to prior to this year is a very end of last year and then we had the support of dr. Smith and mr. Tran but some of our parents were all so excited about this position as a way to provide it no support to our our school staff we have we've had some inclusion Consultants but we as much as we value the outside support that we had we do want to become internally Reliance and so this is what we look at is the way to do that so if we can have these three positions one at the elementary level one at the middle school level and one at the high school level we look at that as a way be able to continue providing us support and training to all of our teachers so that's the short description we have a job description obviously where we have lots of things in there we envision being able send them to conferences and being able to keep them updated on all the current trends and inclusion in education and ways to provide the inclusive opportunities to our students but also again really being able to provide a resource on-site resource in District resource to our staff who are instructional assistants if necessary but really to our kind of the training in anything that are that are teachers need that's really how we envision this is part of our inclusion plan going forward and take any questions thank you so much I will it start with let's see if anybody from the public has any comments so I have no car and there is one hand being raised great mystery long say that I think the priority for the district right now is hiring more special ed teachers that should be our biggest priority our special ed teachers are drowning in high caseloads right now I'm hearing it from all of our sites and our main priority be getting more special ed teachers on staff to lower our caseloads in the lower the class sizes for the inclusion students are working with that should be our Focus thank you Megan Dodson at your mutant thank you I just wanted to clarify for ProMaster long. inclusion facilitators they would be supporting the Gen Ed teachers to fully Implement inclusion in a way that the district is committed to and if you're bringing in more social features that's not really inclusion that is not including so I just wanted to point that out thank you thank you so much anybody else in person I have no cards no, no cards okay and can we hear from our colleagues in the grind so I want to first thank you for bringing this before sand providing some of the context surrounded I do have a few requests I think it was mentioned it hasn't gone to the partnership yet I don't recall this being fitted to the partnership will it presented to the partnership it would be on the agenda for the September 22nd meeting yes it will go through the formal introductions and input in take from from our partnership Partners the other way yes I have is related to this but also a little bit outside of Justice back when we first got the contract with the previous contractors to teach one of the requests that I have she has several times and then we finally got it was a multi-year plan and I know dr. Smith you've talked about this and once we do that will be presented to mr. Long Point and in support of the d a c and what they're asked what I would what I look forward to and I'm not assuming that it's not in the process has been created but what I think will help in these discussions as if there is something Broad and start of a clear pathway that makes all of this come together and make sense so that were all functioning on the same page and we know what can be expected in addition to facility facility taters you no more. there's more paraprofessionals whatever it is that we need that's a part of that larger comprehensive plan I look forward to having that because I think as long as we are presenting pieces of the inclusion plan legal contract or this job description I think we're going to continue to run into these these questions of uncertainty and I don't even attribute it to where we are today I really do think that it comes from a history 34 years of making a commitment to inclusion that has not come to fruition so and I I see you and masks no I I just agreement with you the other evening evening at the opportunity to spend time with the outstanding apparent in the GAC community and we talked through several concerned a challenge is looking forward and I are committed to this inclusion plan and bringing that before the board we're looking at the first meeting in October to bring a giraffe pieces are together apologize tips for piecing it together things are coming together but will prevent that at the first meeting in October so we can get input and talk about the comprehensive thank you so much I appreciate that thank you so much is that are those all your questions as McBride yes for now dr. Kent yes I do I do have questions and I have my notes into place too so I'm just going to preemptively apologizes I made because you know as as has been stated this is a really important direction for the for the district to be going in so I have some questions of clarity and then specific questions about the description but to be clear it's it's actually this is not an administrative position there's no admin credential on that job description of you so there's not a Ministry position actually they are special education teachers that we're hiring because the board vision is to be a full inclusion district and you know in honoring our Union leadership and our teachers and staff with many times requested that in order for us to do with Integrity we need to provide more support and training and that's precisely what's being actualized through posting this this position once it does move forward and get approved and this systematizing the way that we introduce an item to the public then bring it to the partnership then bring it back to the boards for Action I really appreciate so thank you so much for that because I will acknowledge that I felt a little scrappy before talk like what what goes through partnership how do we know what goes to partnership and then in what order and so this feels very reliable and predictable and I look forward to hearing your feedback I that there is an equity statement at the top and just to be clear that is not the one that ye see necessarily is moving forward for job descriptions but it is something we're using in the meantime or is it something in the meantime it's a short-term in meantime okay great but thank you for that okay so now I have specific questions on the description I think it's a and I don't report to know what I'm talking about but but I wanted to ask some questions just from a board members for spective about about I wonder if this person will be responsible for data collection this is something that's really important to the district and the board is to assess how well what we're doing is going and so I wonder I don't know if that's it that's an appropriate for this position but it's that is one question is why data collection is an appropriate fit I wonder if it should State the person reports to because the and if I missed it please I got out to me because the it is my experience that chain of command has seem to be very important in particular in this area accountability is really critical of course for legal reasons but also for moral one and I wonder if that belongs and then finally I support has been having so much conversation both and closed and you know it in closed session and it wasn't recently we had this conversation well as in public about what we mean when we say inclusion until like our former board member dr. mckeithan really perhaps Amplified it in the ways that I had not yet been previously do we eat when we say inclusion are we talking about a broader definition around making all students feel welcome regardless of any Identity or particular background or history of marginalization or do we inclusion are we talking about the educational services term of including students with disabilities on a general education roster and so I think we do have a clear definition which is the ladder and I wonder if it to be stated which it may not but again these are these are things that I just would like to pose as possible feedback if I could take a few minutes to to add contacts to the data collection accountability purpose deep position that we're looking for would be assisting Jenna teachers to measure the effectiveness of overlap services and to the context of using that for the POC station weekly meeting with our teachers on the genocide that's why the sun on the special that site as well we are planning to bring forth a much more vigorous data collection system that can be tailor-made to be specific script we need to inform our decision so the combination of data collection so that we can break down data and analyze him in the way that indeed Kirby actionable and inform but also on the ground conversations and data for our own facilitators to support teachers in the day-to-day conversation so yes they will be part of the you the data collection but in the in the deepest and then then we normally think about it you're going to make that clear oh by the way dr. I am going to need the expertise of mr. Alec on regarding the credentialing status I want to make sure that I don't mistake eat tonight but the Google bring back to the border to make sure that the positions are indeed non-administrative but I want to miss the Alicorn 22 weighed in on that so we'll bring back in writing when conversation to our partnership meeting when the partnership had the chance to comment on the position as well I just wanted Clarity because this job is for does not currently request an admin credential so of course the professionals will aim for their own complete and I'm not mad at you dr. Pandey would you like to give any extra contacts in terms of reporting structure be happy to the way the way that we had invented it was that they would they would have so they would report to me ultimately as a director either the director the coordinator so they would report to the Department of special ed and then they would have an on-site admin as well whoever is over special ad so we ultimately as a department of special ed will be their supervisor but then we'll work concurrently with their site admin similarly to the way we do with some of our radar school psychologist things like that and then I agree with what mr. Tran said about data collection they will absolutely be responsible for data collection and we will we will work with them specifically on what day that we need and we'll will help to train them in if they're not specifically ready for whatever that is or they don't know what date of the collect we're happy to tell them so we will absolutely make sure that we have that information and make sure that they're taking it on a regular basis thank you can we are our student board have any comments on this Legend item okay let me just see what my notes say for me oh by the way I do want to stay that I currently lost my electricity where I'm at so I swear my video is off cuz it's dark but my comments are the following I am very grateful and I appreciate the plan that way brought forward by mr. Tran to bring job descriptions to the board and then subsequently build consensus is through partnership and site leaders and bring them back for Action I think that this is a a great plan and I commend you for putting afford that plan for our board and I have one question about is a I kind of soccer camp saying that this was a teacher position and then I heard Mr long saying that we needed more teachers and we had public comment saying we don't need more teachers or paraphrasing but something about it's not inclusion when we hire special education Educators I would like to get some clarification cabinet or mr. Tran about it and I understand that we need a plan so it doesn't feel so piecemeal but can we just put all those thoughts those comments together and say which one is true and which one is not so that we can have a conversation of like disses this is what we're doing today that's your pain would like to address that so so I can speak a little bit to some of the questions about the the teachers and and what sort of the plan honey. What we've been doing we were we have added quite a few teaching positions we were really happy to do so so we have we added to teaching positions at the elementary schools we had a two positions at the high school so that the the current issue at the moment is that we haven't been able to fill those positions so we have been we've been working seriously I had two interviews last week I had three interviews that we for so it has been an ongoing ongoing process to try to fill those positions for the for the current special ed teachers who are in the collab teaching positions so that is an ongoing process and I think what what a parent was referring to is the more special ed teachers we don't want to we want to continue to work to have a dented and and special ed teachers coexisting and Men working together and we want to how to train our general Ed teachers in order to have them provide services in the classroom through Universal Design for Learning and providing accommodations according to the student's individual education plans so some of the things through this inclusion facilitator as one of the ways that we provide support to our teaching staff we want to and who I wait which is also a teaching position we want make sure that were allowing all of our students to have the most inclusive placement or the most inclusive setting which is a general ed class if that's what works for them and that's what their parents want and that's that's real what we're working toward so does that answer what you're asking Paula yes and so we I just want to restate it just to make sure I we are hiring more teachers and these positions which seem to be three positions will also be credential positions inclusion facilitator positions as their written right now they can have a special ed credential they also have the option to be a school psychologist but they don't have to take ND a special ed teacher and we will they will likely be a special education teacher okay and lastly thank you so much for putting all of these statements together and making it sound by the way my light came back on so I'm going to turn my video back on it just really helps us understand everybody's perspective since you all are the experts good to hear all the thoughts coming together in and putting the knowledge for I just want to say thank you so much for including bilingual on this job description I recently met we're up high school counselors and one of the things that they talked about is how grateful they are that more and more bilingual staff is being hired in that Sharon Who coming to the front office can now speak you know in their native language and know that there's multiple people in the office at the high school that can help them and so I think that we're building this culture of hiring people who have multi-language and I really appreciate that we are starting to to put that forward and every job description to think of course okay let's move on to no boat necessary for 10.3 we look forward to seeing where this job description goes mr. Tran in the future after it moves through our School site and my partnership 10.4 draft of the new classified jobs description for sustainability coordinator Thank You by President Amezola this Mission Again in the same format we would like to have the board and the public before the opportunity to to ask question tonight about sustainability as a position of fish Ali being initiated at the district level and it is classified position as coordinating all of our sustainability goals and objectives in the past I believe this the focus on sustainability has been share responsibility with the city and to a certain degree that was enough to raise awareness but we would want to take this one step further to begin systematically structuring all of our sustainable practices across the particularly in the eight areas of focus number one obviously is the energy consumption the food production in the food packaging since we are out of school system we're going to look at the way we use water in the better way to save or to reduce the amount of water consumption for the district we also looking at the the the amount of paper we were using reducing the amount of plastic that is part of our ongoing operation for years and years and a way to measure the green spaces on our campuses and Alpha sorority and in addition we would like to make sure that air quality is also being paid attention to as well as how we dispose electronic waste these are very specific goals and objectives that have to be measured and accountable to the board so I am bringing this job description in a generic form to come to the board tonight as we focusing all of the detail in the short time that we have after tonight and then taking the job description to the partners in Partnership so that we can go and get the input as well. It's not just better shape of out on resources but it's also supposed to reduce the amount of resources that we spend on paying for electricity and paying for water and and and wasteful practices across the whole disk this is not just good for the environment and sustainability but it is also required by law as more and more pressure from Sacramento rightfully to make sure that we are paying attention to as a public Institution be mindful of the way we consume resources and to the best of our ability to support the environment of her about city of community and I'll hold climate in our world do the job descriptions and Duties are here for the board to do ask questions for contacts or or defecation and I'm here to answer the question thank you so much anyway the common I see somebody raise their hand on Zoom any public comment in person I have no cards to let's go with on zoom and mr. long I think you first I want to clarify something on the previous position that currently are the position requires a master's degree which none of our teaching positions require there's also a listed requirement of a PPS credential mpps credentials currently fall the management association they don't fall under ccft I do think it was important to clarify that I also want to clarify one other statement the need for teachers with caseloads as someone who's on the front lines as someone who represents / 4 more people on the front lines I find it insulting to say that we don't need more teachers and don't need to reduce caseloads because we absolutely need to reduce our caseloads this is a huge cause for low morale in the district and we are not going to be teachers when they have caseloads and IEPs that are 2627 so I just want to keep that very clear I questioned on this position is one is this a classified management position and to how is this different than the currents coordinator that we have now thank you thank you mr. Tran would you like to answer those questions before I move to our board members my colleagues and I appreciate the question D the previous focus on our share position with the city with large a focusing at the time on recyclables and bring it in electric vehicle send and ride sharing and so on so forth take on the the deeper almost a mandatory level at the state coming down to all districts across the whole of California the position we're looking at right now is actually cannot be sustained and to meet the demand from the state unless we have someone who is working within the the operational size of a district to monitor to report to be accountable to the public as well as to the board and it works to it will be supporting both the directions of baking our practices at at the district level as well as recouping a lot of our funding that is being used on Weiss over the years so I'm looking at the deeper than just simply to recycling awareness will level with that we've had over the years mr. Random question about Is this different than the current coordinator is a different or is it the same DD model jobs and duties will be almost fourfold return to the increase from from the exhaust share responsibility with the city and compared to what we are facing to meet the standards from the state it is about four times as far as in terms of the Scopes and sequences and and a responsibility thank you so much okay board member member McBride I'm having common thank you Doctor chat I think you and I'm just checking with students are you would do that I'm so sorry I just wanted to make sure that we included them but you're on top of it I don't I don't know much about this position enough to speak about the specifics on the job description so I just wanted to make sure that in addition to partnership we're going to our current sustainability coordinator to get input on this description to the people who know what they're okay great and then I also didn't see any indication of a of a credential that would indicate administrator so it didn't it didn't look like falls under that category either and then I just wanted to express my support for the aspect of this that is really responsive to our role as Tesco stewards via the means of sustainability it's always been true that sustainability has been a definition that encompasses on resources including indeed literal strict monetary son but I don't know that this district has enough indeed in taking on four times as much work as our current sustainability coordinator this this person would actually be able to figure out where we can save on the order of millions of dollars from our general fund spending so just to be really clear this is a fiscally responsible position and one that would pay for itself and others many times over if we were to baste a prediction based on the president that other school districts have set with their own my my support for in that manner as well and I don't have any questions because I'm really equipped so I'm looking forward to comments from the from the expert on the matter thank you any comments from the student School Board member colleagues yes I would just like to put out Mike my support for this position I know it we have a lot of Superman groups pushing for more sustainable like the more so Emily uses at the school and I also know a lot of students last year spoke of about getting like an official just getting the sustainability coordinator has no official position and I know she really did a lot for school with coven getting the green New Deal Granderson really support of this become an official job at the district level thank you no other students phone numbers no thank you so for me I am in full support of this position believe that we have a land acknowledgement as part of our process of running our school board meeting and as part of that is we are now have the responsibility to be stewards of the land that we own and the land that we work live and learn and I really think that this is important it's an important step for our district to be living and taking action beyond words that we have in our land acknowledgement and I Erin mr. heart and do it do the Rexburg Idaho have allowed me to explore my expressive and creative side how to learn how to make music being part of the music program has also given me a sense of belonging and a strong community that I can Atlantis for me I'm very thankful that through the district funded music program I have had all these wonderful opportunities proposition 28 would ensure that other students can have the same positive experiences a music that I did are fully funding for the Arts is important especially if you want to nurture the musicians of tomorrow and the Arts are briefly stand or showing their support I don't think we need to convince anyone here of the value of music and arts education in the lives of our students are children many of us have benefited from access to learning and Performing and creating and collaborating through all the many Avenues of art-making but not every student and every school in the state has the same opportunities we had and that I children and ccusd have your goal for prop 28 is to expand the number of arts and music teachers throughout the state especially in schools with little or no arts program only about 20% of California schools has a dedicated Archer music teacher restate the price itself as a leader and creative Industries and economies this is an embarrassing failure recover City USD to voice its support for prop 20 will mean we are on board to ensure ensuring more Equitable and vibrant education for all students at all schools at all levels across the state after study has shown that students involved in the Arts have tremendous academic benefits compared to students with without exposure to the yard art inspires kids to excel in and out of the classroom it helps students stay in school increases motivation and cruise attitudes and attendance and improve academic performance lower-income or socioeconomic students experience even greater benefits in the yard low-income students highly-engaged me Arthur more than twice as likely graduate compared to their peers with no Arts education and have a five-time lower dropout rate this is one of the many reasons why I propped when he 20 I think we all know that here in Culver City we are very fortunate in many aspects when it comes to Arts and Music education we got to hear Zachary share a bit about his own experiences evening programs recognize that there is always always always spend additional space or more budgeted funding in these areas as they are an asset that we are well overdue to see it and it there are a number of reasons outlined across various resource highlighting the benefits of prioritizing art and music education program as core subjects alongside Math Science and reading but I think it's top of mine for many of us in this room and online is the benefits that we see these programs have on Mental Health I think that's the one crisis that we all recognize needs a multi-faceted solution and arts and music education programs are among the association myself for my daughter who is a senior theater and film and my son who is a first-year law student at Michigan State University and former Orchestra student their well-being has been tremendously impacted by their involvement as creative in the art and music education program the inclusion of art among science technology engineering and math shifting stem to steam highlights emphasis began to place on these areas and we have a responsibility to make that commitment to ensure arts and education and music education programs are accessible to all students here in Culver City and across the state and is it the parents and the community of color recognizing that throughout my upbringing as an artist I knew that we were under-represented and as a parent I see that we continue to be under-represented and the same goes across to me Bob lower income communities would have greater access to these phenomenal programs art music education right here in Culver City and across the state of California with the passage of proposition 28 so I look forward to hearing our board here within ccusd join us in support of this proposition and there did not know each other and by the end I have met some bar best friend there are so many students I know that are pursuing careers in art but without supporting their education and providing these programs as funds to bring in professional teachers and yes and real-world experiences the students aren't really being supported every time I go into the sea oh and there's a bad day or anything in my way dance allows them to release the stress from the academic school day and turn into a mindset where I'm supported and testing my skills the L dancer and a communicator or not always My name is Milly read and I'm a senior at Culver City High School and I'm the president of the technical theater Department in GTA authentication is change my life from the moment I started school I've always been a creative person painting drawing and singing from a very young age and some basic theater and improv programs in late Elementary in early middle school over here to start doing theater in Middle School given the opportunity the first being laying crew and the station manager my first major shows at that point I grew to love this pretty filled things really change for me as I continue to do Lighting in High School junior year for our maintenance Lowe's and I work on two major paid jobs for lighting outside of school and the skills that develops worse than working on a TPA Productions are essential I'm also going to the live theater industry as lighting technician Apprentice After High School it is safe to say artistic Creation in middle school at Navy Pier in high school I changed my life and I want others have the same opportunity so please support prop 28 you know spine hello this is Marci Bondi of course the 428 I myself am a master of arts with an emphasis in vocal performance so Opera and I firmly believe that the parts are in SeaWorld and extremely important for the growth of not just the students but for our society Springs comfort and joy it makes people think it helped grow it shows how advanced our society the most importantly it Bridges differences and brings people together many people may not know this but they actually believed that are actually had it they had a bachelor's a type of type of Masters and the ancient Greeks required you to take music along with math because they felt that they went together with one you couldn't have the other and it's certainly true if you study any music theory so yes I would love I believe that we need to keep arts and all of our schools and available to all of our students I see the rest of my time Q okay those are our speak Missoula thank you so much board members would you like to make any comments Miss McBride I don't know you're not going to get any push back on this for me and I don't want to reiterate everything that was so eloquently stated by all of us peekers unfortunately I do think we are fortunate to be in Culver City where we support the Arts it's pretty clear that we support the Arts and it's something that I think brings us all together here but to the point was to make that was made by Crystal this is not just for us this is for the State of California to ensure that all students have access to the Arts and it's interesting to me that we do tend to put an emphasis on math and science and you know English language acquisition or English language but it's through the Arts that we allow people to become creative and critical thinker problem solvers that problem solved by also introducing Butte and I think it was Pablo Picasso and the artist in the room can tell me if I'm wrong but I think you said something like we're all artists of children the problem is maintain that desire for Artist as we grow older I know I bought that but basically that's what happens when we don't enforce to our state to fund the things that we know will support our students and make our our school successful in a nutshell art save lives and I just thank you all for coming here tonight and showing your support not only for Culver City students who I feel like we're all in agreement we're going to protect the Arts here but this is so much bigger than us this is about the state of California and hopeful it will have Ripple effects across the country because every child deserves aren't so thank you for this every student deserves art soccer camp thank you so much I was really moved by all of the speakers thank you so much for coming tonight and sticking around with us it was it's really important to do this I agree that tonight is not just a ccusd / say I mean of course it's about a state initiative but I mean in terms of the message that were sending I really don't plan to propel that forward tomorrow night there's a Culver City Democratic Club meeting and I will be speaking on behalf of this position proposition at that meeting tomorrow night and I've taken copious notes on the remarks that you all made and taken note of how many of you there were and took a picture of you standing and you know take down some of your best, that's including the ones already restated by Mystic. but I really also love Crystal what you were saying about how it's both our it's as in an of itself as well as an integration in integrated in our in our all of our other practices that are so critical and. more than 50 years ago President Lyndon Johnson's Proclamation 3869 launched a week-long celebration of the histories cultures and contributions of citizens of Hispanic listen to America's national Heritage since then the one week event has grown into what is known by many as Hispanic Heritage Month become a commemoration from September 15th to October 15th at event physically linked to the independent anniversaries of several Latin American nations and uplifts the cultural Legacy of a group deeply rooted in Rich tradition this celebration has become a vital offer Kennedy to dispel Community as he mentioned the term Latino already is gender if you go into the community you ask all your average Latino community members you go and ask my grandmother you going off my grandfather asked one who's your average Latino they will tell you the term Latin X is offensive and it's it's it's nonsense at this point so I highly encourage you all to to talk to the community members talk to actual Latinos who are part of the community have a voice because majority of the people and everyone in my family all of my City everyone in my circle we're all a few nose from all backgrounds you talk about Central America you talk about South America Mexicans we do not identify we do not use Latin X this is more of a more virtual virtuous signaling coming from I don't know which population are who's coming up with these terms but they definitely do not and I mean do not represent the Latino we are okay with being termed and call Zach Enos and I highly suggest that you guys are you guys are good with surveys send out a survey to the Latino community and ask these questions because next is not representative of all of us thank you no other public comment no other public comment can I hear from my colleagues and Brian May I interrupt second that I can have an opportunity to maybe put a different perspective on the floor in the mission from from the board is the the evolution and I guess the did the right and the privilege of naming ourselves in terms of how that would make sense to us and particularly for those who are younger than us the generations and the Next Generation I think that's the privilege in the beauty of the freedom that we have in this country I do not believe that the word Latin X meant to exclude ever from anyone who would want to remain determined Latino Latina they're just not a zero-sum it is to Simply one more additional criminology one more additional way for people who would wanted to adopt the Latin X as identification I can put them self and I truly by putting that in here including in the the more traditional Hispanic heritage it's not the intention to exclude but actually to do a larger picture a large a circle is in the law when I think the younger generation had already spoken regarding Latin X as a term that they had adopted mostly for themselves moving forward so I would I would humbly put that on the floor 2 send the language of person who doesn't identify as a member of the Latin Community I think this is a conversation that is really something that I would prefer to hear from that Community before making a decision and it doesn't preclude me from approving this resolution because I think the resolution is really important and it's time but I would like for us to continue this conversation and it's not something that I think can just be filled up neatly with a conversation you know by the board but it speaks to maybe more educating that we have to do throughout our community about the needs to list and different perspective even within the same cultural group many people have heard the expression black people are not a monolithic I think the same can be said for any cultural group and how people choose to express themselves is not defined by one person within that it is nuanced and I appreciate the effort of staff to bring forth something that a resolution that's meant to acknowledge and celebrate the presence of and the history of the contributions of and Hispanic community and I would love for us to make us to continue conversation because there's always udm benefit and learning and growing and
